1996 Land rover Range rover problems

land rover logo

The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1996 Land rover Range rover problems

The Land Rover Range Rover, produced in 1996, is known for its luxurious features and off-roading capabilities. However, it also has some common problems that owners frequently report.

One of the most significant issues is poor reliability, which is common among Land Rovers.

The Range Rover has never appeared in the JD Power survey, and the results for other Land Rovers do not inspire confidence.

Air suspension is another common problem with Range Rovers of all generations, including the 1996 model.

The transmission in the 1996 Range Rover can also have potential problems.

Cooling malfunctions with the cooling system in the Range Rover Classic are fairly common.

In summary, the 1996 Land Rover Range Rover has several common problems, including poor reliability, air suspension issues, transmission problems, and cooling malfunctions. While these issues can be expensive to repair, regular maintenance and check-ups can help prevent them from becoming more serious.

Were old Land Rovers reliable?

Very early Land Rovers, made during the 1960's through the 1980's, were pretty simple and reliable machines. They were rugged and were capable off-road vehicles on-par with many Jeeps and Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers.

Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?

According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.

What are the disadvantages of a Range Rover?

The most commonly reported issues include problems with the electrical system, suspension, and transmission. While there are some clear pros and cons to owning a Range Rover, it's ultimately up to the individual to decide whether the vehicle's luxury and capability are worth the cost of repairs and maintenance.

What Land Rover has the least problems?

Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.

Negative 1996 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Ronaldo Braun 2024-10-02

Owning this vehicle has been a mix of experiences. While we have enjoyed some great moments, we have also had to deal with some lows. Unfortunately, we tend to dislike the RR the most just after we've paid another $2K repair bill. However, shortly before it breaks again, we love it. We bought it as a family hauler right before the birth of our second boy, and it has done a decent job of hauling us to Tahoe a few times. It has never stranded us anywhere, and there is plenty of space inside. However, we have noticed that its resale value has dropped so quickly that we're upside down on the loan and can't sell without paying $. The controls, especially the power window switches, can be a bit confusing. The owners manual is more than 200 pages, and you have to read every one. Despite these challenges, we have had some great moments with this vehicle.

  2. Kiley Kemmer 2024-09-03

I initially wrote a book on the problems I've experienced with my car. Listen, I would advise you not to get sucked in by the hype. This car is not worth the investment. I recommend reading the reviews, Consumer Reports, and making an informed decision, not one based on emotion like I did. I would never, ever purchase another Land Rover. I've spent close to $7000 fixing all kinds of stuff on this car.

  3. Rashad Schuppe 2024-07-22

Although this is a solid ride, I would not recommend buying this SUV unless you have deep pockets. Unfortunately, in my experience, it has left me stranded and required over $6000 in repairs over the past 5 years. Additionally, I was unable to sell it or receive a fair market value for trade-in, even at a Land Rover dealership. The dealership did mention that this is a high-end vehicle, so it comes with high-end costs. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing another Land Rover.

  4. Maximilian Howe 2024-06-21

These cars make me wonder how Britain won the war. I bought mine new and it has had 2 motors, 5 transmissions, and has had every component fail - every switch, motor, light, door lock - you name it, it broke. However, it drives great when it's not in the shop and it is good off-road. Overall, it's not a good value car and it's expensive to fix.

  5. Barry Willms 2024-02-03

It seems like there's always something that needs repairing. Recently, I've had to replace the BeCM for $2200 and I'm in the process of converting to springs. Additionally, I've had to replace eight center-caps for the wheels at $22 each, and I've had some issues with the rear hatch that cost $200 to fix. I also had to replace the Os2 sensor, which was fortunately covered under recall, but the dealer still wanted to charge for labor.

Positive 1996 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Keenan Bailey 2024-11-17

This is a great overall and very safe car.

  2. Oscar Swaniawski 2024-10-24

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you bought your car last year with 115,000 miles. It's great to hear that you've had very few problems so far. I understand that the 1995 model year has a few quirks, such as air bags that make it very difficult to add aftermarket grill guards and other things. However, I'm glad to hear that you've been able to add a roof rack, an ax, and some other goodies. It's always great to have some extra features! Lastly, I'm happy to hear that you have a great stereo. Have a wonderful day!

  3. Irwin Halvorson 2024-10-10

We bought a 1996 Range Rover HSE a year ago and it has been the best vehicle we've ever driven, when it's working. Although we've had to replace the alternator, engine computer, air suspension compressor, and numerous other parts, costing us thousands, it has still been worth it. Whenever there was a problem, the in-dash display warned us and the engine electronically limited its speed. It has never left us stranded or needed to be towed.

  4. Enos Cruickshank 2024-09-27

Enjoy the room! This SUV is the epitome of luxury and performance, with unparalleled build quality and styling both on and off the road.

  5. Nicklaus D'Amore 2024-09-01

I hope you're enjoying your new vehicle! It sounds like you made a great choice. The built quality is superb and the styling is unique and solid looking. Plus, the EAS is a convenient feature for getting in and out. With routine maintenance, you can expect to keep this vehicle rolling for 200-300k miles without any problems. Enjoy the comfort, especially in the rear seat of the LWB model!
