1999 Land rover Range rover problems
The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1999 Land rover Range rover problems
The Land Rover Range Rover 1999 is known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, cooling system, suspension, and ABS system. These issues are based on complaints from owners of this car and have been reported in various forums and articles.
- Engine and cooling system: The engine, cooling system, and suspension are responsible for almost equal proportions of claims related to issues in the Land Rover Range Rover 1999. Each of these components is responsible for approximately 20% of the total claims. Misfires in the engine can also damage the catalytic converter.
- Suspension: The air suspension bags in the Range Rover 1999 can develop leaks, which is a common problem not exclusive to this model. Some owners opt to convert them back to coils. Other issues include overheating, slipped engine sleeves, and cracked engine blocks.
- ABS system: The ABS system in the Range Rover 1999 is unique, as it uses a pump to store pressurized brake fluid in the system. When the brakes are applied, the pressurized fluid is released, activating the brakes and traction control. However, if the accumulator, which stores the pressurized fluid, is not replaced often enough, the brake pump can become overworked and burn out.
- ABS Modulator Electrical Connector Corrosion: There have been reports of corrosion in the ABS modulator electrical connector due to water intrusion, which can cause pulsation on brake application.
- Chirping noises: Some owners have reported chirping noises, which are often caused by issues with the power steering system or the air suspension compressor.
- Headliner sagging: The headliner in the Range Rover 1999 can sag over time, which is a common issue in many vehicles of this age. However, it is still worth checking when purchasing a used Range Rover.
- Service history: Given the age and mileage of these vehicles, it is essential to inquire about the service history, particularly regarding the replacement of consumable parts like the brake accumulator and head gaskets.
- Corrosion: While aluminum panels are generally corrosion-resistant, it is still essential to check for bubbling, signs of poor crash repairs, and damage from off-roading. Additionally, check the condition of the towing hitch, as excessive use can promote drivetrain wear.
- Drivetrain: Check the car for signs of uneven suspension, which could indicate issues with the airbags and compressor. Also, ensure that the car has an LPGA certificate if it has an LPG filler, as this is required for insurance purposes.
In summary, the Land Rover Range Rover 1999 has several common problems related to the engine, cooling system, suspension, and ABS system. When considering purchasing a used Range Rover 1999, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect these components and inquire about the vehicle's service history to ensure that potential issues have been addressed.
Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?
According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.
Does Range Rover have engine problems?
All engines are in V6 configuration with common-rail technology and turbochargers. Those units are found in Discovery and Range Rover Sports. The main problem with these motors are failing oil pumps; often leading to inadequate lubrication if the vehicle wasn't used for too long.
What Land Rover has the least problems?
Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.
How long will a Range Rover engine last?
The Good. With detailed maintenance, routine servicing, and good driving habits, a Range Rover can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. This works out to be about ten to thirteen years of service before it requires repairs or breaks down.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-01-15
- Fire: 1
- VIN: SALPV1440XA
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER. THE CONTACT HEARD A RATTLING SOUND AND NOTICED THAT THE HEAT SHIELD SURROUNDING THE MUFFLER WAS COMPROMISED. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO SEVERAL DEALERS, BUT THEY COULD NOT LOCATE ANY FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST MELTED THE PLASTIC GAS TANK AND SURROUNDING WIRES. THE EXHAUST IS LOCATED NEXT TO THE GAS TANK, UNLIKE MOST VEHICLES. THE DESIGN HAS FUSED THE FUEL PUMP TO THE GAS TANK. A MECHANIC INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST HAS CAUSED A DANGEROUS FUEL LEAK. THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS REPAIRED FOR $2,000 BY A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL DESIGN WAS A SAFETY HAZARD AND CAUSED THE DAMAGE. LAND ROVER REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE FOR FREE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-09-14
- VIN: SALPA1246XA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY '99 RANGE ROVER WHEN MY ABS, TRACTION CONTROL AND BRAKE LIGHTS LIT. WITHIN MINUTES, I LOST CONTROL OF MY BRAKES. UPON INSPECTION, MY BRAKE PADS WERE IN GOOD CONDITION, THE BRAKE FLUID CANISTER WAS FULL (AND THERE WERE NO LEAKS), AND WHEN I CHECKED MY BRAKE LINES, I FOUND THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS NOT PUMPING INTO THE TWO REAR BRAKES. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM: A FAILURE OF THE BRAKE MODULAR UNIT. DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 1999, THE MANUFACTURER USED PLASTIC COMPONENTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE UNIT, BUT CHANGED THE PLASTIC TO STEEL. SINCE THEN, THE OWNERS OF VEHICLES WITH PLASTIC COMPONENTS HAVE SUFFERED BRAKE FAILURES RESULTING FROM THE BREAK DOWN OF THE PLASTIC COMPONENTS. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. PEOPLE COULD DIE! *TR

- VIN: SALLSUMVX6A
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: DEAR SIR, HAVE YOU BEEN AWARE OF AN INADVERTENT LONG TRAVEL ISSUE OF SERVICE BRAKE AT OLDER (SERIES I-II) RANGER ROVERS ? THIS IS ALREADY A KNOWN ISSUE IN JAPAN BY INITIATING A SURPRISE AUDIT BY JAPAN MINISTRY OF LAND INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT (MLIT) AGAINST THE NATIONAL SALES COMPANY, PREMIUM AUTOMOBILE INCORPORATION (JAPAN) A FEW YEARS AGO. NOT ONLY A SMALL VOLUME (MORE THAN 50 CASES), THERE HAVE BEEN LOTS OF MARKET FEEDBACKS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THIS PHENOMENON IS CAUSED NOT ONLY BY THE FOUL OF ABS UNIT ITSELF (CAUSED BY SOME METAL DEBRIS WITHIN THE ABS UNIT), BUT ALSO FOULS OF ACTUATOR, ABS PUMP UNIT, AND THE PRESSURE REGULATOR. ONCE AGAIN THE PHENOMENON EXPERIENCED BY LOTS OF JAPANESE CUSTOMERS IS ALWAYS THE SAME; INADVERTENT LONG BRAKE TRAVEL SCARCELY TO SHAFFE THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDAL PAD WITH THE FLOOR PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE REAR BRAKE FORCE WAS INACTIVE WHEN THIS FOUL OCCURS. THUS THIS PHENOMENON IS UTTERLY A SAFETY RELATED ISSUE, I AM STILL WONDERING WHY THE JAPAN MINISTRY IS RELUCTANT TO LET THE MANUFACTURER INITIATE A RECALL CAMPAIGN IN JAPAN. THE LAST THING I WOULD LIKE TO ADD; THIS IS NOT A JAPAN UNIQUE ISSUE BUT MUST BE A KNOWN ISSUE NOT ONLY IN THE STATES BUT ALSO AT OTHER NATIONS. REGARDS, RANGE ROVER OWNER. *JB

1999 Land rover Range rover recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1999 Land rover Range rover.
- Manufacturer: LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 114, "THEFT PROTECTION." WATER CONTAMINATION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL CAN LEAD TO VARIOUS FAILURE MODES OF THE TRANSMISSION. ONE OF THESE FAILURE MODELS RESULTS IN INCORRECT OPERATION OF THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION THAT COULD ALLOW A VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY IF PARKED WITHOUT THE HANDBRAKE PROPERLY SET.
- Consequence: UNINTENTIONAL VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CHECK THE PARK LOCK FUNCTION; REPOSITION THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BREATHER TUBE; AND TEST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FLUSH IF NECESSARY.
- Manufacturer: LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE CAST ALLOY THROTTLE BODY IS HEATED BY FLUID BLED FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM, TO PREVENT ICING IN EXTREMELY COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS. THIS FLUID PASSES THROUGH A SMALL ATTACHMENT (PLATE) TO THE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH UTILIZES A CORK GASKET. THE CORK GASKET HAS PROVEN TO BE UNRELIABLE IN THIS APPLICATION. CONSEQUENTLY, COOLANT FLUID CAN LEAK FROM THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE DE-ICER PLATE AND THE THROTTLE BODY.
- Consequence: SHOULD THIS COOLANT COLLECT ON HIGH TEMPERATURE REGIONS OF THE ENGINE, THE COOLANT FLUID COULD IGNITE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY GASKET, DE-ICER ATTACHMENT, AND SECURING HARDWARE.
- Manufacturer: LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:HOSES/LINES/PIPING/FITTINGS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. COOLANT SYSTEM LEAKS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN AREAS WHERE THE COOLANT COULD BE SUBJECTED TO ELEVATED TEMPERATURES.
- Consequence: CONSEQUENTLY, THE FLUID COULD IGNITE CAUSING AN UNDER-HOOD FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MAKE A SERIES OF MODIFICATIONS TO SEVERAL UNDERHOOD HOSE COMPONENTS TO ELIMINATE THE RELEASE OF ENGINE COOLANT.
- Manufacturer: LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL:AUTOMATIC (ASC)
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE LOADING CONDITIONS ON THE VEHICLE'S LEFT SIDE ENGINE IDLER PULLEY CAN EXCEED THE MAXIMUM CALCULATED FIGURE OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION. THE MATERIAL OF THE PULLEY CAN FRACTURE AND ULTIMATELY FAIL. FAILURE OF THE PULLEY MATERIAL CAN CAUSE THE PULLEY TO THROW OFF THE SERPENTINE BELT.
- Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF ENGINE AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS (POWER STEERING, WATER PUMP, ALTERNATOR, AIR CONDITIONING AND ACE).
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED IDLER PULLEY.
- Manufacturer: ROVER GROUP, LIMITED
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. AS A RESULT OF WATER INGRESS AND SUBSEQUENT ICE BLOCKAGE, THE TRANSMISSION BREATHER TUBE CAN BECOME CLOGGED, EXPELLING TRANSMISSION FLUID FROM THE DIPSTICK TUBE ONTO HOT ENGINE COMPONENTS.
- Consequence: THIS LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, CAN RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION BREATHER TUBE FROM THE INNER FENDER AND A SECTION OF THE HOSE WILL BE CUT AT AN ANGLE. THIS ACTION WILL REMOVE THE END OF THE BREATHER TUBE FROM ANY POOLED WATER AND WILL ELIMINATE WATER DROPLETS FROM CLINGING TO THE END OF THE TUBE.

Hi there! As a long time RR owner, I've never experienced any issues. I've found that dealerships tend to charge quite a bit for service, but local mechanics can do the same job for a much more affordable price.
-
The air suspension is really cool! The power is impressive for a 6500lbs truck and the gas mileage averages around 14.7. The off-road ability is truly unmatched. Whether you're headed to the opera or pulling a Hummer out of the mud, you can have confidence in the versatility and ability of this vehicle.
-
A truck is a truck, and the Range Rover is no exception. It's a beautiful and complicated vehicle that will soon become a trusted companion, not just a mode of transportation. Although I have had some minor trouble with water leaking onto the driver's seat well, it's still a great truck. The build quality could be better, but if you're looking to go off-roading and bash over rocks, there aren't too many chassis that would be better suited. Additionally, the 1999 model is largely hand-built, which gives it a unique quality. It's a shame to see the effects of time and off-roading on such a beautiful truck.
-
I upgraded from a '92 Range Rover to this '98. What a difference! I absolutely love this car. It feels luxurious and safe without being too big. I plan on keeping it for a long time, as I tend to do with most of my cars.

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your 1998 Range Rover since you bought it brand new. Although you had some problems early on, it's wonderful to know that after changing out the failed air suspension system to a manual one several years ago, it has been a reliable vehicle to own. With just over 100,000 miles and 20 years under its belt, it's no longer a daily driver, but it still gets annual trips totaling 2000 miles or more. You even had a new headliner installed last year and a replacement climate control unit this year, which is now inexpensively available rebuilt. At this point, it's truly a classic that retains its iconic looks and great SUV/off-road/snow-performance ability. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

It's been a very comfortable and easy car to drive, and I've been pleasantly surprised by its pulling power despite only having 190HP. I have had a few repairs, including a brake job and some issues with the stereo and fan bearing, but overall I've been happy with my Rover. The only downside has been the accelerated depreciation, which has been a bit disappointing. I'm currently considering trading it in for a '01 740iL. Thanks for listening!

This CERTIFIED used vehicle came with bald tires, which required a significant expense of $260 apiece. Unfortunately, shortly after, the head gasket blew and one header was cracked. Additionally, there were issues with the passenger door staying locked, and one brake light and headlight blew. During an oil change, the accessory belt and radiator hoses were found to be worn and were replaced at my cost. There was also a heater core leak, and currently, there is a short circuit causing the front windows to not roll up. Unfortunately, the vehicle is currently not starting, which is likely due to an issue with the starter.

First of all, it's great to hear that you've always loved this vehicle! Since seeing it at an auto show, you knew you wanted to get one, and now you've had it for almost five years. The unique look and comfort are definitely standout features. However, it's understandable that the cost of maintenance can be a concern, as it can be quite expensive. If you're able to get out of the shop without spending at least 2K, then you're lucky. It's unfortunate that this may be the reason you won't get another one, but it's important to weigh all factors when making a decision like this.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it 2 and a half years ago, but unfortunately, the engine overheated and blew just 3 days later. I was really disappointed because I had checked the oil and water the day I bought it and the day after, and there were no leaks. While driving down the highway, the coolant apparently dropped out of the car immediately, and I had no warning until the damage was done. Since then, I've spent close to 10,000 bucks on repairs, and it's not running at the moment. However, I must say that if you can afford the upkeep, they are a lot of fun off-road. My mom and stepdad both drive Hummer H2s (yeah, sue us hippies), and my Range Rover can go anywhere they can, and actually can climb better. It's also more luxurious too! Thanks for listening to my story.

We really enjoyed the off-road capabilities of this large SUV. After purchasing it, we attended a Rover-sponsored event to learn off-roading. We were beginners and joined about 8 other Rovers, mostly Discoveries but two Defenders. It was quite amusing to see how we out-performed everything in our group while roaming in air-conditioned comfort. I truly believe that when these Rovers are in their prime, they are at the top for luxury and can take you anywhere a 4-wheeler can go.
