1997 Land rover Range rover problems
The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1997 Land rover Range rover problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1997 Land Rover Range Rover, several common problems have been identified:
- Pulsation On Brake Application:
Owners have reported experiencing pulsation when applying the brakes. This issue can be concerning as it affects the braking performance of the vehicle, potentially leading to safety hazards. Pulsation on brake application can be caused by various factors such as warped brake rotors, worn brake pads, or issues with the braking system's components. - Corrosion in the ABS Modulator Electrical Connector Due to Water Intrusion:
Another common problem reported by owners is corrosion in the ABS modulator electrical connector due to water intrusion. This issue can impact the functionality of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), affecting the vehicle's ability to brake efficiently and safely. Water intrusion leading to corrosion in electrical connectors can result from poor sealing or exposure to moisture over time. - Chirping Type Noise:
Owners have also complained about a chirping type noise in the Land Rover Range Rover. This noise can be indicative of various underlying issues, such as worn-out belts, pulleys, or components in the engine or accessory drive system. Addressing this problem promptly is crucial to prevent further damage and ensure the vehicle's optimal performance.
These common problems with the 1997 Land Rover Range Rover highlight some of the challenges that owners may face with this particular model. Regular maintenance, timely inspections, and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate these problems and ensure the vehicle's reliability and performance.
Are old Land Rovers reliable?
Very early Land Rovers, made during the 1960's through the 1980's, were pretty simple and reliable machines. They were rugged and were capable off-road vehicles on-par with many Jeeps and Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers.
Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?
According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.
Does Range Rover have engine problems?
All engines are in V6 configuration with common-rail technology and turbochargers. Those units are found in Discovery and Range Rover Sports. The main problem with these motors are failing oil pumps; often leading to inadequate lubrication if the vehicle wasn't used for too long.
What Land Rover has the least problems?
Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.

Beside the electrical problems, and other odds & ends, the truck is really fun to drive. The key is to have a good mechanic. The one I use has a graveyard of dead Land Rovers to pick parts from. Also, I was recently in an accident (rear-ended) and all I can say is, you should see the other guy!

This car has really grown on me. I love the great view of the road that the Range Rover offers. I initially liked the classic for its ride comfort, but the extra push of the 4.6 makes such a difference. The EAS is a fantastic feature, and I use it much more than I thought I would. I have looked at just about every SUV, including the new 2003, and I don't think anything can really compare to this truck. I am definitely going to keep this one for a long time.

My Range Rover has been a joy to own! Other than regular maintenance, it has been a real treat. When the occasional problem arises, it can be costly to go to Land Rover, but the quality of work and the atmosphere are great! My Rover has never left me stranded, and that is very important to me and my family. We feel very safe and secure in this premier SUV. It's a 10 for me! Join the club!!!

I bought a used 1996 4.0 Range Rover with 33,000 miles in December 2001 and I've been extremely happy with it. There's no other SUV that can compare to the luxury of a Range Rover; it's the best of the best. If you're thinking of buying one, I'd definitely recommend waiting a few years and buying used. I got mine for $29,000, which is less than half the price of a new one that retails for over $60,000.

Classic beautiful looks and style, off roads like a mountain goat, mechanical/electrical nightmare, abysmal gas mileage and outrageous service costs. Truly English and eccentric, wouldn't drive anything else!

It seems like there's always something that needs repairing. Recently, I've had to replace the BeCM for $2200 and I'm in the process of converting to springs. Additionally, I've had to replace eight center-caps for the wheels at $22 each, and I've had some issues with the rear hatch that cost $200 to fix. I also had to replace the Os2 sensor, which was fortunately covered under recall, but the dealer still wanted to charge for labor.

I've always dreamed of owning a used RR, and I finally got my hands on a '96 Rover with only 10k miles per year. The comfort and spaciousness of the vehicle are unmatched, but in terms of value, it's not the best. Fortunately, I've only had to make minor repairs since purchasing it. However, I must admit that replacing a front headlight cost me $520 (just for the light!) and resetting a sensor for the electronic stabilizing system cost me $350. I'm grateful that nothing major has gone wrong, or else I'd need a second mortgage! On top of that, the cupholders are not well-designed, which is surprising for a $59,000 vehicle. If you're looking to invest in a reliable vehicle, I'd recommend a Landcruiser or Lx470 instead.

Owning this vehicle has been a mix of experiences. While we have enjoyed some great moments, we have also had to deal with some lows. Unfortunately, we tend to dislike the RR the most just after we've paid another $2K repair bill. However, shortly before it breaks again, we love it. We bought it as a family hauler right before the birth of our second boy, and it has done a decent job of hauling us to Tahoe a few times. It has never stranded us anywhere, and there is plenty of space inside. However, we have noticed that its resale value has dropped so quickly that we're upside down on the loan and can't sell without paying $. The controls, especially the power window switches, can be a bit confusing. The owners manual is more than 200 pages, and you have to read every one. Despite these challenges, we have had some great moments with this vehicle.

I initially wrote a book on the problems I've experienced with my car. Listen, I would advise you not to get sucked in by the hype. This car is not worth the investment. I recommend reading the reviews, Consumer Reports, and making an informed decision, not one based on emotion like I did. I would never, ever purchase another Land Rover. I've spent close to $7000 fixing all kinds of stuff on this car.
