1998 Land rover Range rover problems
The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1998 Land rover Range rover problems
The Land Rover Range Rover, particularly the 1998 model, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include oil leakage, electrical problems, parking brake failure, and airbag malfunctions.
- Oil Leakage: Oil leakage is a prevalent problem in the 1998 Range Rover. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out seals, gaskets, or other components in the engine and transmission systems. Oil leakage is a serious concern as it can lead to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and even engine failure if left unattended.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are another common problem in the 1998 Range Rover. These issues can range from minor problems like blown fuses or faulty sensors to more significant problems like malfunctioning alternators or batteries. Electrical problems can cause various symptoms, including difficulty starting the engine, flickering lights, and malfunctioning electronic systems.
- Parking Brake Failure: Parking brake failure is a safety concern in the 1998 Range Rover. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out cables, broken springs, or other components in the parking brake system. Parking brake failure can cause the vehicle to roll away when parked on a slope, leading to accidents and injuries.
- Airbag Malfunctions: Airbag malfunctions are a serious safety concern in the 1998 Range Rover. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors, wiring problems, or other components in the airbag system. Airbag malfunctions can cause the airbags to fail to deploy in a crash, leading to increased injuries or fatalities.
In addition to these common problems, the 1998 Range Rover is also known for engine, cooling system, and suspension problems. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn-out parts, poor maintenance, or design flaws. The engine, cooling system, and suspension are responsible for just under 20% of the total claims in the 1998 Range Rover, each.
The 1998 Range Rover has also been subject to several recalls, including cracking rear suspension components and the possibility of under-bonnet fires. These issues can be caused by various factors, including design flaws, manufacturing defects, or other problems. It is essential to check the service manual to see if remedial work has been carried out to address these issues.
In conclusion, the 1998 Range Rover is known for several common problems, including oil leakage, electrical issues, parking brake failure, and airbag malfunctions. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn-out parts, poor maintenance, or design flaws. It is essential to address these issues promptly to avoid further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?
According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.
Can a P38 be reliable?
A well maintained P38 is a sound machine that, despite its unwarranted reputation, isn't going to give you a wallet-crunching nightmare of failures. Buying a bad one that's been abused, run on a budget and poorly serviced is likely to cost big money to bring up to reliable standards.
How long will a Range Rover engine last?
The Good. With detailed maintenance, routine servicing, and good driving habits, a Range Rover can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. This works out to be about ten to thirteen years of service before it requires repairs or breaks down.
What Land Rover has the least problems?
Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.

- Summary: I OWN A 1998 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER AND THE SELF DIMMING REAR VIEW MIRROR IS FAULTY. THERE IS A STRONG RING OR HALO DEVELOPING ON THE GLASS THAT IS MAKING IT NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THROUGH. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO THE AUTO DIM FEATURE THAT HEATS UP THE SPECIAL GLASS TO AUTO DIM. ANYWAY, I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AT 1-800-637-6837 OPT 9 EXT 2949 AND TALKED WITH A HEATHER. (THE CONVERSATION WAS SUPPOSEDLY RECORDED). SHE TOLD ME THAT LAND ROVER DOESN'T SEE WHY THEY WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND THAT THEY WONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE "THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY". THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN THIS MAKE OF VEHICLE AND I THINK THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. LAND ROVER MAKES THE REPLACEMENT SO EXPENSIVE, THAT AN OBVIOUS SOLUTION IS TOO COSTLY FOR THE AVERAGE DRIVER.*JB

We purchased this 1998 HSE model vehicle with 72k miles. We had to choose between the ML320 and the HSE, and we found that the HSE is a much better equipped and road competent vehicle. I absolutely love its road manners and off-road ability, and the seating is exceptional. Although we did experience some issues with the stereo and the tires were not readily available at our local tire distributor or BJ's, overall the vehicle is great. We also have a 1992 Range Rover with 140k miles that I am currently rebuilding the transmission for. I am a huge fan of Range Rovers and will always be. It almost sounds like a rap, doesn't it?

Build good, runs good, looks good...

Classic beautiful looks and style, off roads like a mountain goat, mechanical/electrical nightmare, abysmal gas mileage and outrageous service costs. Truly English and eccentric, wouldn't drive anything else!
-
The 4.0 and 4.6's are truly beautiful cars, with a sleek exterior and an interior quality and style that is unmatched by any other SUV. Although the 4.0's are slightly underpowered, and even the 4.6's cannot match some of the competition, they are still impressive vehicles. While some have criticized Range Rover for mechanical issues, the 4.0/4.6 series seems to have most issues rectified, making them solid and reliable vehicles.
-
I am disappointed with this vehicle as I have had ongoing issues with the engine light, air conditioning and air suspension. I believe Land Rover could benefit from investing more in their mechanics' training to ensure these issues are resolved correctly. This was my first Range Rover and unfortunately, it may be my last.

The 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE Kensington Edition - Land Rover is renowned for crafting excellent vehicles. The '97 Range Rover is no exception. I have owned this vehicle for a year now (my first car), and it has been fantastic! The only issues I had were with the airbag and sunroof, but they were easily fixed. It has a little over 100,000 miles on it, and I maintain it myself. For those who prefer DIY or an independent LR shop, it is quite reasonable to fix. If you own more than one Land Rover, I recommend buying reasonable diagnostic software to help you with electronics - as it does have its quirks! As for fuel economy - what do you expect? Fuel isn't at $5 yet, so it's not a big deal! Overall, it's an excellent vehicle.

I purchased this car two years ago with 32,000 miles for $34,000, a significant discount from its original price of $65,000. While it initially seemed like a great deal, I have since encountered a number of issues with the vehicle. The cost of gas has increased since my purchase, and I have had to deal with several expensive repairs, including a broken radio, two air suspension failures, and a leaking head gasket. While the car is spacious and comfortable, it has proven to be the most costly and problematic vehicle I have ever owned.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my '98 4.0. It's been a very comfortable and easy car to drive, and I've been pleasantly surprised by its pulling power despite only having 190HP. I have had a few repairs, including a brake job and some issues with the stereo and fan bearing, but overall I've been happy with my Rover. The only downside has been the accelerated depreciation, which has been a bit disappointing. I'm currently considering trading it in for a '01 740iL. Thanks for listening!
