Suzuki Motor Corporation (Japanese: スズキ株式会社, Hepburn: Suzuki Kabushiki gaisha) is a Japanese multinational mobility manufacturer headquartered in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka. It manufactures automobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), outboard marine engines, wheelchairs and a variety of other small internal combustion engines. In 2016, Suzuki was the eleventh biggest automaker by production worldwide. Suzuki has over 45,000 employees and has 35 production facilities in 23 countries, and 133 distributors in 192 countries. The worldwide sales volume of automobiles is the world's tenth largest, while domestic sales volume is the third largest in the country.

Suzuki's domestic motorcycle sales volume is the third largest in Japan.

History

In 1909, Michio Suzuki (1887–1982) founded the Suzuki Loom Works in the small seacoast village of Hamamatsu, Japan. Business boomed as Suzuki built weaving looms for Japan's giant silk industry. In 1929, Michio Suzuki invented a new type of weaving machine, which was exported overseas. The company's first 30 years focused on the development and production of these machines.

Despite the success of his looms, Suzuki believed that his company would benefit from diversification and he began to look at other products. Based on consumer demand, he decided that building a small car would be the most practical new venture. The project began in 1937, and within two years Suzuki had completed several compact prototype cars. These first Suzuki motor vehicles were powered by a then-innovative, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engine. It had a cast aluminum crankcase and gearbox and generated 13 horsepower (9.7 kW) from a displacement of less than 800cc.

With the onset of World War II, production plans for Suzuki's new vehicles were halted when the government declared civilian passenger cars a "non-essential commodity." At the conclusion of the war, Suzuki went back to producing looms. Loom production was given a boost when the U.S. government approved the shipping of cotton to Japan. Suzuki's fortunes brightened as orders began to increase from domestic textile manufacturers. But the joy was short-lived as the cotton market collapsed in 1951.

Faced with this colossal challenge, Suzuki returned to the production of motor vehicles. After the war, the Japanese had a great need for affordable, reliable personal transportation. A number of firms began offering "clip-on" gas-powered engines that could be attached to the typical bicycle. Suzuki's first two-wheeled vehicle was a bicycle fitted with a motor called, the "Power Free." Designed to be inexpensive and simple to build and maintain, the 1952 Power Free had a 36 cc, one horsepower, two-stroke engine. The new double-sprocket gear system enabled the rider to either pedal with the engine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or simply disconnect the pedals and run on engine power alone. The patent office of the new democratic government granted Suzuki a financial subsidy to continue research in motorcycle engineering.

By 1954, Suzuki was producing 6,000 motorcycles per month and his company had officially changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. Following the success of his first motorcycles, Suzuki created an even more successful automobile: the 1955 Suzuki Suzulight. The Suzulight sold with front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, which were not common on cars until three decades later.

Volkswagen held a 19.9% non-controlling shareholding in Suzuki between 2009 and 2015. This situation did not last, as Suzuki accused Volkswagen of not sharing promised technology while Volkswagen objected to a deal where Suzuki purchased diesel engines from Fiat. An international arbitration court ordered Volkswagen to sell the stake back to Suzuki. Suzuki paid $3.8bn to complete the stock buy-back in September 2015.

Common Suzuki problems

Common Problems with Suzuki Cars

Suzuki cars have been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the timing chain, headlights, and brakes. Here are the details on these issues, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Faulty Timing Chain Tensioners: Many Suzuki models, including the XL7, SX4, and Grand Vitara, have experienced issues with timing chain tensioners. The tensioners can fail, causing the timing chain to become loose or even break. This can lead to engine damage, which can be costly to repair.
  2. CVT Failures: Suzuki's continuously variable transmissions (CVT) have been known to run hot and enter temperature protection control, a fail-safe mode that slows the vehicle's speed and ability to accelerate. This issue has been reported in various models, including the SX4.
  3. Engine Issues: Engine problems are common in Suzuki cars, with some models experiencing engine failure, such as the 2004 Verona, and others having issues with the engine not turning over, like the 2006 Forenza. Additionally, the 2006 Grand Vitara has experienced premature failure of the front passenger seat sensor, and the 2006 Forenza has had throttle actuator control issues.
  4. Premature Headlight Failure: Suzuki cars, particularly the XL7 and Grand Vitara, have been known to have issues with headlight failure. The headlights can burn out prematurely, and in some cases, they can even catch on fire due to a defect in the daytime running lamp module that allows excessive heat to build up until it sparks a flame.
  5. Brake Problems: Brake issues have been reported in several Suzuki models, including the XL7 and Forenza. These problems can range from excessive road noise to premature wear of the brakes, which can be both inconvenient and potentially dangerous.

These are just a few of the common problems that Suzuki car owners have reported. It is essential to stay up-to-date with recalls and maintenance schedules to ensure the longevity and safety of your vehicle.

The next day we took the vehicle to the inspection report which showed damage to the gearbox. He recommends that I go back to the dealer and ask for a refund of the money or change of vehicle, since the owner omitted the true fault of the vehicle, I ask him the return or exchange and there was a refusal to return the money and change the vehicle, leaving me with a newly purchased unused vehicle, it was explained to the owner that the vehicle does not pass emissions. The vehicle cannot be fixed since it is a discontinued brand of vehicle and there are no spare parts.

  • Summary: The airbag sensor in the passenger seat failed. There is a known Supplemental Restraint System issue/recall in 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4s, however there has not been a recall for the 2012 model despite this being an issue beyond the aforementioned years. Affected vehicles may develop an electrical circuit disconnection within the front passenger sensing system sensor mat that is built into the front passenger seat bottom cushion. The disconnection is due to repeated flexing of the sensor mat from use of the front passenger seat. If this condition occurs, the “AIR BAG” light in the instrument cluster and, the front passenger’s seat belt reminder light will come on. Also, the “PASS AIR BAG OFF” indicator light will remain off because the front passenger air bag will remain enabled. In a frontal impact of significant magnitude, the front air bag will deploy with full force - even with a child, or small adult, in the front seat. Air bag deployment with a child or small adult in the front passenger seat increases the risk of severe injury or death to that occupant. Replacement front seats are backordered, likely because of the recall in 2007-2011 vehicles, and despite placing an order for a new seat in May 2023, I have been waiting 9 months for a pallet to ship from Suzuki. Given the danger of traveling with a passenger given the vehicle's condition, and the fact that this was a known issue for the 5 prior years of this vehicle, this is an unacceptable amount of time to wait for a replacement part, and this should be investigated as a potential necessary recall for 2012 Suzuki SX4s.

  • Summary: I have received multiple recall notifications for problems with air bag on the passenger side, and a fuel tank that Suzuki says may crack. It would be great to have these things taken care of, but the repair providers that Suzuki has authorized are both 3 HOURS away! That means 6 hours total driving time, which is quite unreasonable. Does the NHTSA have any authority to either 1) get Suzuki to authorize a shop a reasonable distance from me, or, 2) have Suzuki reimburse me for recall repairs done at a local facility? I have called Suzuki myself, but they are extremely unhelpful. They made their money when they sold the car, and seem to be extremely unwilling to promote any lasting good will.

  • Summary: I have this airbag light on problem stated below. It seems it should be a safety recall. Possible solution for Airbag light on Seat Sensor Ok, I'm going to ask a couple of questions and hope that [XXX] or someone with knowledge chimes in. I originally had this problem in my wife's car a couple of months ago, airbag light on, clock flashing after going over a bump with my 240lb ass in the passenger seat. We got home, turned the car off, restarted it and it went through the power-up self test I guess and the fault cleared itself. The other day it started up again, no bump but still had the fat guy in the seat. I noticed that I only saw this issue referring to 2004 model xl7s. I've looked and haven't seen 2003s, or 2005s. The TSB for this issue ONLY refers to 2004 models and says that this is the updated part number 86605-53JA1. If you look at this site that has them in stock: [XXX] It says that part fits 2004-2006. I found the published date for the TSB somewhere online as 12/2004 so they apparently knew the problem early, made an update/change and moved on. Probably changing the design sometime mid-year 04? I don't like the idea of spending $1400 for a part. So, I checked [XXX] and found a nice passenger seat from a 2005 locally for about $75 in a boneyard. Does anyone have any advice why swapping in a 2005 seat (or just the base if the color is wrong, whatever) is a bad idea? Does anyone know if there has to be any special dealer magic/ calibration/ etc done if I put this in myself? I haven't yet had the time to pull the seat out of the car, flip it over and check things out. But I'm not super hopeful that I can fix whatever this sensor is since nobody else has posted anything in the last 13 years. Thanks for your interest. • Summary: This issue pertains to Safety Recall Notice No. XC - All 2004-2006 Suzuki Verona Vehicles - DRL System. Please note, the vehicle manufacturer provided documentation service was performed and the DRL Module (part 38860-84Z21-RX0) was replaced at mileage 49470. My wife and I are the original owner and the mileage is 61,000-62,000 currently. Approximately 1 month ago we experienced a slight odor like something electrical was burning. Recently, we noticed 1) That the Daytime Running Lights glow at first and gradually reach full intensity. 2) When switching from low headlights to high beams, all headlights go completely out for about 6 seconds before coming on gradually. Because Suzuki automobiles are no longer sold in the United States, the nearest support dealer is located 150 miles away. A local auto repair shop diagnosed and determined the DRL Module part mentioned in the original recall needs to be replaced. We contacted the support dealer, who, in turn, contacted Suzuki USA about the issue. Suzuki USA indicates they complied with the original recall and refuse to comply a second time. The original recall service report indicated a $122.60 cost for the part. Currently, Suzuki has the part and wants $294 for it, and they consider the repair to be a billable service. We have not been able to locate any alternate part sources and must rely on Suzuki for this item. I am [XXX] old and if I have to drive 150 miles (one way) to make the repair, it will involve the additional cost of an overnight hotel. My local repair guy can do the repair, which I'm willing to pay for if Suzuki can supply the part at $0 or at least for only their product cost. Otherwise, I do not feel safe driving the car with the possibility of having a fire (per the recall notice). Even if no fire occurs, it certainly is not safe without dependable headlights. Won't you please help us? Thank you in advance for your assistance. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, an incorrect classification may result in the passenger frontal air bag deploying even if there is a child in the front passenger seat, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat bottom cushion, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on May 3, 2019. All second letters notifying owners of the remedy were mailed by April 10, 2020. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's numbers for this recall are 4011 and 4012.
