2021 Land rover Range rover problems

land rover logo

The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 2021 Land rover Range rover problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Land Rover Range Rover 2021, here are some common problems:

  • Mechanical Problems: More serious mechanical issues have been reported, particularly related to the air suspension and engine. These issues can impact the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle.
  • Suspension Concerns: Range Rover Sport problems often revolve around the suspension system. Issues with the suspension, engine electrics, air conditioning, and drivetrain have been commonly reported. Leaks from the engine, sunroof, and around the tailgate are also known problems.
  • Steering Problems: Steering issues have been a common complaint among owners. Corroded bolts on the power steering unit can lead to potential steering failure, affecting both diesel and gasoline models. Premature steering motor failures, airbag error messages, and other related problems have been reported.
  • Bodywork and Rust: The use of aluminum in Range Rovers has led to rust issues, especially in older models. Rust problems are more pronounced in areas where steel meets aluminum, and exposure to salt on roads can accelerate deterioration of the body panels.
  • Fluid Leaks: Range Rovers are known for leaks from various parts of the engine, transmission, and other connected units. Fluid leaks, including oil, coolant, and fuel leaks, are common issues reported by owners. Leaks can also occur through window and sunroof seals, affecting the interior of the vehicle.
  • Power Loss: Some models, especially diesel-fed ones, have experienced sudden power loss. This can be attributed to blocked EGR or DPF valves, split hoses, timing belt issues, catalytic converter problems, fuel pump malfunctions, and sensor failures. These issues can lead to a decrease in power and performance.

These common problems with the Land Rover Range Rover 2021 can impact the overall driving experience, reliability, and maintenance costs of the vehicle. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when making purchasing decisions or planning maintenance and repairs.

Negative 2021 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Gust Cruickshank 2025-06-21

I loved my 2010 and 2012 Range Rover HSE vehicles for their beautiful design and smooth driving experience. However, I have noticed some missing basic interior amenities and luxuries in the 2020 model. When it comes to drive-ability, the car tends to shift too much, making the ride less smooth and enjoyable. The acceleration and deceleration issues are especially noticeable in regular traffic, where the car can behave badly and jerk. Additionally, the auto engine off feature, which shuts off the engine when the car is stopped and starts it back up when you take your foot off the brake pedal, can be quite rough and unpleasant. Overall, while the 2020 Range Rover has some issues, I still appreciate its sleek design and enjoyable driving experience.I've only had the car for 2 months now and twice it failed to auto start. I had to press the ON/OFF button twice to get it to restart. It's frustrating, but I understand that it may be due to EPA regulations. The handling in the 2020 model is not as tight as the 2012, especially noticeable at low speeds. However, the 2012 handling was luxurious and smooth with very little body roll. The 2020 model feels heavier and higher from the ground, although it apparently weighs less. Unfortunately, there is no longer a sunglasses holder or an open cubby to store them. It's a shame, but I understand that the roof may have been re-engineered. The glove box won't stay open, which is a bit inconvenient. The storage compartments are not easily accessible, which can be a chore when trying to put away or retrieve small items like a phone or a pen. The center console storage is awkward to open and mostly behind your body, making it difficult to access. However, there is a flat shelf under the armrest that could be useful for some items. Overall, I still enjoy driving the car despite these minor inconveniences. The armrest has a sticking surface that appears to be designed for a phone, but it is awkward to access. The armrest is located behind your body, making it difficult to open and close. Additionally, the base of the seats no longer have bolsters on the side, which means there is nothing to keep you laterally in the seat. As a result, your legs may tend to splay outward, and you can slide side to side in the seat. Finally, the touch screen is slow to respond, and you may need to press and hold for a second to ensure that it registers your press. I have contacted Range Rover about these issues, but they have stated that this is how the car is designed and that there is nothing wrong with its behavior. It can be frustrating to only notice these problems during rush hour traffic, which is not possible to test at the dealership.

  2. Paris Parisian 2025-06-18

The short of it is that the 2020 RR was traded in for a Lexus. From the time we bought it in December 2019, there were odd issues. The screen would periodically go black, the yellow check engine light would come on, and there were numerous updates every time I turned on the truck. Additionally, the interior lights would magically turn on by themselves, there was a low battery notification, and the passenger side of the hood bounced up and down and looked like it would fly open. The touchless key entry worked when it wanted to, and you had to lock the car with the key as you couldn't just press the inside lock button and shut the door. There was also the inconsistent electric charging, which could be anywhere from 20 to 28 miles of electric charge, and it had a very sluggish acceleration. There was a service action Petrol Coolant pump operation notification as well. The most recent issue was a 'Suspension fault detected' notification, and I had trouble getting in touch with the dealership (Land Rover of Orlando) to resolve it. Despite my attempts to contact them, I still haven't heard back from my service advisor. The only good thing about this truck was the tax credit we received! I will never buy a Land Rover again!!!

  3. Ervin Cormier 2025-05-26

I really appreciate this car in so many ways, but unfortunately, it has been in the shop five times this year. Just a friendly reminder to be cautious when making a purchase.

  4. Grover Mayer 2025-04-21

The electronics (entertainment and climate control) started malfunctioning the day I bought the car. The dealer was quick to respond and picked up the car, gave me a loaner and took it to fix it. It turned out that it needed a software update, which seems like it should have been on the pre-delivery check list. A week later, the lower touch screen went totally blank and the two knobs that control temp stopped working. The dealer picked up the car again and replaced the lower screen. Although the radio source randomly changes and the climate control (lower screen) seems to roll through random levels of working or not, I am happy that I bought this in the spring and consistent heat or A/C haven't been needed yet. The car is going back to the dealer next week to see if the third time is a charm. I will be noting to the dealer that another problem will result in initiating a Lemon Law suit. I must say that the dealer has been fantastic and their responsiveness has exceeded my expectations (which were high given the cost of the car). If it wasn't for this issue, I would give the 2019 RR 5 stars. I love everything else about the car. Unfortunately, I seem to be getting more experience with their loaners (none of which have had a similar issue) than my vehicle.

  5. Brendon Littel 2025-02-20

The car's intermittent starting issue has persisted despite multiple visits to the dealer, and the key fob has proven ineffective. However, the central computer replacement has been identified as the solution to the problem. It is worth noting that the vehicle was purchased less than a year ago.

Positive 2021 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Jovany Bauch 2025-04-27

I've owned a 2007 and a 2014, both of which were very different from each other. However, the 2020 P525 is a dream to drive and completely free of bugs. Not only is this vehicle unique, but most of them are also one-of-a-kind due to the endless combinations available. Although I regret getting the 22” rims, they do look awesome! Next time, I would definitely go for 21” or 20”. Gas mileage is what you'd expect from a giant SUV, but at this price point, who cares about MPG? It's all about being unique, having quality finishes, and feeling good. The information system is designed for the world, not just the US, so it may take some time to understand the quirks. Once you do, it works well and is truly unique. The ride can be a bit bouncy at times, but it never flinches when you throw it into a turn. At least in a Range Rover, you don't look and feel like a soccer parent. If you buy a 525 or Autobiography, you won't regret it. UPDATE 122020 - I still have zero regrets and receive a lot of compliments. Note: The 22

  2. Lawson Wilderman 2025-01-08

I am thrilled with my purchase! Despite some initial challenges with the InControl setup, I am now enjoying all the amazing features of my new truck. I love its unique physical presence and the fact that it's not a common sight on the road. The dealership was able to offer me a 5% discount and even arranged for home delivery, which was a great convenience. Although I previously owned an X7, this truck surpasses it in many ways. I am still experiencing some minor issues with the InControl system, but overall I am very satisfied with my decision. While the fuel economy is not the best, I understand that this is to be expected with a vehicle of this caliber.

  3. Kay Price 2024-10-25

We have been driving Mercedes SUVs since their inception, but we left due to poor service. However, I must say that this car is incredibly comfortable and stylish!

  4. Jerrell Grant 2024-10-17

The Range Rover Autobiography is such a fantastic car! It's even replaced our Bentley sedan in terms of comfort and power. And have you seen it in satin red? It looks absolutely amazing, especially with those 22
