1994 Land rover Range rover problems

land rover logo

The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1994 Land rover Range rover problems

The Land Rover Range Rover 1994 is known for its poor reliability, with various issues reported by owners over the years. Here are some of the most common problems with the 1994 Range Rover:

  • Engine, cooling system, and suspension issues: These three components are responsible for the majority of claims made by Range Rover owners, each accounting for around 20% of the total. Engine misfires can also damage the catalytic converter.
  • Recalls: There have been nine recalls on the 1994 Range Rover, with some of the more serious issues involving cracking rear suspension components (1994-5) and the possibility of under-bonnet fires (up to mid-1998).
  • Transmission problems: The Classic Range Rover's transmissions can have issues such as being stuck in one gear due to backup in the transmission filter, limited acceleration caused by faulty transmission seals, or starting problems due to a faulty selector switch.
  • Cooling malfunctions: The cooling system in the Range Rover Classic is prone to malfunctions, requiring specific parts unique to this model for replacement.
  • Air suspension issues: Air suspension problems are common in Range Rovers of all generations, often occurring once the vehicle reaches a decade of usage. These issues can result in the vehicle leaning to one side, causing an uncomfortable ride and safety concerns.
  • Security system faults: The second-generation Range Rover, P38, can experience issues with the security system, which can disable the engine if triggered in error, rendering the vehicle undrivable.
  • Door latch problems: More than 65,000 Land Rovers have been recalled due to a defective door latch that can cause the doors to open accidentally or fail to close properly.
  • Takata airbag inflator recall: Land Rovers with recalled Takata airbags are affected by one of the largest and most dangerous recalls in automotive history, involving 34 million+ vehicles across 24 brands.

These common problems with the Land Rover Range Rover 1994 highlight the need for careful consideration when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle. Understanding these issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and allow current owners to address potential problems proactively.

Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?

According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.

Does Range Rover have engine problems?

All engines are in V6 configuration with common-rail technology and turbochargers. Those units are found in Discovery and Range Rover Sports. The main problem with these motors are failing oil pumps; often leading to inadequate lubrication if the vehicle wasn't used for too long.

How long will a Range Rover engine last?

The Good. With detailed maintenance, routine servicing, and good driving habits, a Range Rover can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. This works out to be about ten to thirteen years of service before it requires repairs or breaks down.

What Land Rover has the least problems?

Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.

Negative 1994 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Alphonso Abbott 2024-11-27

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that while this vehicle may require repairs from time to time, the cost of fixing it can be a bit higher than some other vehicles. But don't worry, with proper maintenance, it can still be a reliable and enjoyable ride!

  2. Joshua Jacobs 2024-09-04

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Rover. While it's true that these cars tend to depreciate quickly, I've found that they have a certain charm that makes them worth it. Admittedly, repairs can be expensive, but I found that by keeping up with regular maintenance and checking the service records before purchasing, I was able to avoid any unexpected costs. Plus, driving it is always a blast! It's definitely not your average Honda Accord, with unique features like the horn on the end of the left column lever and the clam shell engine hood. While gas mileage isn't great in the city, it's easy to find creative parking solutions and any door dings just add to the rugged look. Just be sure to avoid any models with no service history and keep an eye out for rust. Thanks for reading!

  3. Paris Durgan 2024-02-10

This is an excellent city car. It can easily handle parallel parking and navigate over curbs and potholes with ease. Although some people may not appreciate its heavy build, I find it enjoyable to drive a car that can withstand the rough streets of Chicago. While reliability may be a concern for some due to the high cost of replacement parts, there are many aftermarket options available. It may be a good idea to have a second car just in case. Overall, I would definitely consider buying another Land Rover, but perhaps the Discovery II would be a more practical choice.

  4. Emmitt Green 2024-02-01

I bought this Rover for Pheasant hunting in northern NH. With plenty of space for 4 guys, two labs, and lots of gear, this truck has been a reliable and fun ride both on and off road. Equipped with the warn winch bumper, nothing can stop us! I've owned two of these and when it's time, I'll definitely be on the lookout for another pre-1995 model.

Positive 1994 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Jalon Kuhn 2024-11-07

It's British after all, so it may leak and break down from time to time. You know how it is! But despite its quirks, I absolutely love it! In my opinion, it's the best 4x4 out there. Just a heads up though, the parts can be a bit pricey to replace, so be prepared for that. Take care!

  2. Greyson Bergstrom 2024-09-25

That is the best way to describe something that is so much fun to drive, yet incredibly capable off road. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy working your Rover every chance you get and that it has never let you down. It sounds like an excellent vehicle for trailblazing or going to the ballet.

  3. Tyshawn Hickle 2024-08-28

So far, this vehicle has been an absolute joy to drive! However, with gas prices as high as they are, it can be a bit of a fallback. The handling is smooth on the highway as well as in city driving. It can be a bit rough and tumble on the hills, but that just adds to the fun!

  4. Zachary Wehner 2024-08-27

If you take good care of your Rover, it will take good care of you. I have owned this vehicle for over three years and have only had to replace the battery. The previous owner took good care of it, and I have done the same. I have not experienced any mechanical problems, and the vehicle has enough power and tenacious off-road capabilities. Although I have heard that prices for parts can be expensive, from looking at the receipts on work done, it seems that parts are not the problem. Labor costs can be high, but if you can find a good mechanic who won't gouge you, costs should be about average for a foreign vehicle. If you ever decide you want a real off-road vehicle and not a toy, this is the vehicle for you.

  5. Wade Hackett 2024-08-17

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share that I purchased this vehicle used with 30000 miles on it and it has been my primary vehicle ever since. My family and I are big fans of Rovers, and this is one of five that we have owned. Unfortunately, I have to sell it due to my job. The vehicle is a bit too big for many of the places I visit, so I have had to downsize. Thank you for considering this vehicle!
