Land rover Range rover 2003 problems
The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common Land rover Range rover 2003 problems
The Land Rover Range Rover 2003 is known for several common issues that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common problems and their details:
- Electronic and Software Glitches: Range Rovers can experience electronic and software glitches, often manifesting as false warning lights or various bings and bongs. Switching the engine off and on again can sometimes resolve the issue, but if not, the fault could be more serious.
- Rear Light Filling with Rainwater: Some earlier models, including the 2003 Range Rover, had their rear lights fill with rainwater. This issue was replaced under warranty, but it's essential to check for this during a pre-purchase inspection.
- Off-Road Damage: The Range Rover can tackle tough terrain, but it isn't a tank. Check for off-road damage during a pre-purchase inspection, as this can lead to more significant issues down the line.
- Automatic Transmission Failure: The Range Rover's automatic transmission can fail, particularly in earlier models. While later models have addressed many of these issues, it's still essential to check the transmission's condition during a pre-purchase inspection.
- Loss of Power: The Range Rover can experience a loss of power due to various issues, including electrical faults and engine problems. It's essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's safety and reliability.
- Rear Suspension Hub Bushes: The Range Rover's rear suspension hub bushes can wear out, leading to a clonking noise over bumps. This issue is more common in vehicles with 20-inch wheels or larger.
- Brake Discs and Pads: The Range Rover's brake discs and pads can wear out and require replacement. According to data from CAP Derwent, the Range Rover typically needs new brake pads every 30,000 miles, which is earlier than the average luxury SUV.
- Electrical Faults: The Range Rover's complex electrical system can experience various faults, including dash flashing or poor performance. These issues can be difficult to diagnose without a code scanner, making them potentially frustrating to address.
These are some of the most common issues reported by Range Rover 2003 owners. When purchasing a used Range Rover, it's essential to check the vehicle's service history, conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection, and address any issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's safety and reliability.
What is the most common problem with Range Rovers?
And the Range Rover is no exception. Three in older models faulty fuel sending units are a fairly common report this leads to inaccurate fuel gauge readings which are fairly stressful.
How many miles does a 2003 Land Rover last?
If you take care of your Range Rover, it can last for many years. Land Rovers have an average life span of 13 years or 200,000 miles when well cared for.
What Land Rover has the least problems?
Which Land Rover model requires the least maintenance? While the results of What Car's 2021 Reliability Survey found that the most reliable luxury SUV was the Range Rover Velar (2017-present), this doesn't mean that it requires less maintenance than any other Range Rover model.

I CALLED MY DAD OVER WHO IS A MECHANIC AND HE ADVISED IT WAS MAYBE THE BATTERY.I ENDED UP CALLING ON M ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED TO A SHOP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AND GET FIXED. THE MECHANIC AFTER A WEEK TOLD ME ABOUT MULTIPLE SCENARIOS IT COULD BE. AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY THE CAR WAS ABLE TO START AND I DROVE IT TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION. THIS MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH AND I DID AND NOW AFTER TWO MONTHS THE VEHICLE WILL STILL NOT START! SO THEN I LOOKED ONLINE SEARCHING FOR AN ANSWER AND THAT WHEN I DISCOVERED PAGE AFTER PAGE OF PEOPLE ONLINE POSTING IN FORUMS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS TO THE SAME ISSUES WITH THERE 03 RANGE ROVER ,WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUES SOUNDS MECHANICS TELLING THEM THE SAME DIAGNOSIS! I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION AFTER TALKING TO RANGE ROVER DIRECTLY THAT AFTER RUNNING MY VIN THE STEERING COLUMN HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED BEFORE WITH THE PREVIOUS OWNER!. AND ON THE FORUMS PEOPLE WERE SAYING THAT THEY DID THE SAME REPLACEMENTS OF PARTS AND IT EITHER WORKED IN SOME CASES OR OTHERS THE PROBLEM CAME BACK! POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-09-15
- VIN: SALME11413A
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 RANGE ROVER THAT I JUST BOUGHT USED 2 WEEKS EARLIER. AS I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR STARTED MAKING SEVERE GRINDING NOISES AND LOST POWER. I COULD NOT STEER THAT WELL AND WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I MANAGED TO GET BARELY ENOUGH POWER TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PULL INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS EVENT WAS WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND THE CAR MADE THE WORST GRINDING NOISES IN THE WORLD. I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS A RECALL ON IT TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, WHICH IS A FAILED DRIVESHAFT / AXLE / DIFFERENTIAL OPERATION. BECAUSE IT WAS RECALLED, I HAD IT TOWED TO LAND ROVER AND THEY ARE NOW SAYING THAT THEY CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM UNTIL THE AXLE IS REPAIRED, WHICH THEY SAY IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I BELIEVE IT IS PART OF THE RECALL AND THEY SHOULD BE COVERING THIS AT NO COST. I HAD MY CHILD IN THE CAR AND I THINK THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. ALSO, WHEN I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN COSTA MESA, CA (HOUSE OF LUXURIES), THEY ASSURED ME THE CAR WAS TOTALLY CHECKED OUT AND HAD NO MECHANICAL OR OTHER ISSUES. NOW I AM VERY ANGRY WITH THEM FOR PLACING MY LIFE (AND OTHERS) AND MY CHILD'S LIFE IN DANGER BY NOT DISCLOSING THESE PROBLEMS, OR AT LEAST TELLING ME THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS A RECALL AND TO REPAIR IT BEFORE I DRIVE. I AM HAPPY THAT I WAS TOLD ABOUT THE RECALL LATER BUT FEEL THAT THE BUSINESS I BOUGHT THE CAR SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS PRIOR TO THE SELL OF THE CAR AND IT COULD HAVE PLACED OUR LIVES AND OTHERS AT RISK HAD I BEEN GOING DOWN THE FREEWAY, WHICH IS IN LA AND HEAVY TRAFFIC. THANK YOU. *TR

This Rover drives really well and has a great quality feel to it, both inside with genuine wood (none of that cheesy Cadillac 50cent plastic fake wood) and in the way it handles bumps. It drives like a dream, and with the hyper-adjustable power seats and air suspension, it outperforms every other SUV that I've owned or tested. As someone who races SCCA showroom stock, I'm pretty harsh when it comes to judging SUVs. I really liked the interior room of my ML500, but the ML driver's seat was uncomfortable without lumbar or a usable armrest. If you can afford it, this Rover is the finest SUV on the planet.
-
Great all round! However, there are a few minor issues: the steering wheel adjuster won't move up or down, the radio always reverts to 'no tune' after being parked, and there's a strange 'static' crackle in the voice of the navigation system. Additionally, the engine and transmission roar a little more than expected.
-
This is definitely one of the best automobile experiences I've had in a long time. After having spinal surgery several months ago, this was the only car that gave me the confidence to get back on the freeways and streets again. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone considering purchasing one of the best SUVs out there.
-
We really like this car when it's running smoothly. However, we've had some issues with the radiator. Unfortunately, the repairs can be quite costly and the service hasn't been the best. It can take up to 6 weeks to get the necessary parts.

This vehicle is really beautiful. It's big, but in a nice way. I'm lucky enough to get to see and ride in Land Rovers all the time because my husband works for L.R. N.O. I particularly like the new Range Rovers - they remind me of the bubble-eye Mercedes or Lexus.

The Range Rover is a very nice and comfortable ride with plenty of storage and room for road trips. However, it can be quite expensive to maintain this beautifully designed vehicle. The technology is a bit outdated and there is some road noise.
Jerrold Mante 2024-11-05
The truth is that when you try to sell or trade in these vehicles, their value may not hold up as well as a Mercedes or Lexus. Good luck!
Deshawn Upton 2024-07-19
Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my truck. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop seven times since it was delivered to me in 09/02. The first three visits were due to the same steering and seating electrical problem, while the next four were related to the navigation system, which was still faulty even after I sold the truck. The Nav voice system never worked. I reached out to Land Rover USA and the dealership, but they only apologized, scheduled another repair visit, and provided me with an Enterprise rent-a-car for the seventh time. However, during that time, I had the chance to drive the Trail Blazer and I must say, it was an amazing truck!
Tanner Auer 2024-03-16
Land Rover bought back my RR after several trips to the dealer for electrical problems they couldn't fix, including frequent stalling and erratic door locks, flashers, and interior lights while driving at highway speed. Despite their diagnosis of a faulty vehicle control module, they were unable to provide a timeline for its replacement. As a confident solution, I accepted their offer to buy back the car.

The car has great looks and a comfortable interior. Although the ride is now worthy of the price, the engine could use more power and better mpg. It would be helpful to have auto-on lights, auto wipers, passenger memory seat, compact key, and a modern nav system. While a 3rd row of seats would have been nice, the car is unfortunately very noisy over 80 mph. The car has required several trips to the shop for unacceptable issues such as fixing the nav voice, replacing the door mirrors, and replacing the correct color inside trim. Additionally, I have noticed some small rattles and squeaks that are disturbing the interior. Overall, the car has some areas for improvement, but it has some great features as well.
