Volvo S70 problems

The Volvo S70 is a compact executive car produced by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2000. The S70 was essentially a facelifted 850 saloon. The S70 was replaced with the Volvo S60.
Overview
Introduced in Europe in late 1996 for the 1997 model year and later in the U.S. for the 1998 model year, the Volvo S70 was an updated version of the Volvo 850 saloon. The S70's body style was overall more rounded compared to its predecessor. Changes included a redesigned front end with new lights, fully colour-coded bumpers and side trim, and clear indicator lenses for the rear lights, as well as a redesigned interior. According to Volvo, a total of 1800 changes were made.
Standard equipment was improved with remote central locking, heated & electrically adjustable mirrors, 4 airbags, power brakes with ABS and power windows being standard on every car. Trim levels varied for each market as did the equipment levels of the most basic trims. In the United States, the badging denoted the engine variant and to some extent the equipment level, whereas in Europe engine and options could be chosen individually. On all markets more powerful versions usually received better or upgraded standard equipment. The T5 and R were the series high-performance models.
For the 1999 model year, a minor facelift was introduced. Apart from very minor cosmetic changes, such as a slightly different Volvo badge on the front grille and US models now being equipped with side markers on the front fenders, most changes were done to the mechanicals. Volvo introduced its second generation side airbag which increased in volume to offer better protection. WHIPS, Volvo's system to minimize whiplash injuries, was also introduced as part of the standard equipment. New engine management systems with drive-by-wire replaced the mechanical throttle on all turbo engines as well as bringing with them an upgraded traction control. Now including throttle as well as brake intervention it was renamed STC. The ABS was upgraded from a three-channel to a four-channel system, all-wheel drive models received thicker rear discs and redesigned rear calipers. All automatic transmissions were now equipped with adaptive shift-logic, replacing the previous 3-mode selection. A starter interlock was added to models with manual transmissions.
For the 2000 model year, a new 5-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift-logic was introduced. It was only available on non turbo front-wheel drive models. The 10V engine variants were dropped and replaced by detuned 20V versions, drive-by-wire throttle was now also introduced for non turbo models.

Common Volvo S70 problems
The Volvo S70 is known for several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Fuel Flap Failure: The fuel flap hinges on the S70 are made of plastic, which means they are prone to breaking. This can cause the fuel flap to hang from the side of the car, which is not only unsightly but can also damage the paint job. A revised fuel flap with stronger hinges is available to fix this problem.
- ABS Warning Light: If the ABS warning light appears on the dashboard, it is usually caused by a fault with the ABS control module. This issue can be resolved by fitting a replacement ABS control module, which should cause the warning light to disappear from the dashboard.
- Upper Engine Mount Failure: The upper engine mount, also known as the upper engine stabilizer, is prone to failure on the S70. When this part breaks, there will be a loud knocking noise when accelerating or changing gears. A replacement upper engine mount is needed to resolve this issue.
- Tailgate Interior Panel Failure: The interior tailgate panel on many Volvo wagon models from the 1980s to the early 2000s, including the S70, is prone to breaking away from the tailgate. This can interfere with the function of the tailgate lock/latch and cost over $200 to replace from the dealer. However, a $8.95 kit and about 30 minutes of time can provide a long-lasting repair that is stronger than the original part.
- Oil Cap Seal Leak: The large rubber washer under the oil filler cap on many Volvo models, including the S70, can become rock hard with age, causing it to leak oil. This can lead to oil contamination in the spark plug cavities and engine, potentially causing short circuits under high load conditions. Prevent this by replacing the oil cap seal at every other oil change.
- Odometer/Tripmeter Failure: On all 1993-1997 850 models, a small plastic gear drives the odometer and trip meter functions. These gears are prone to cracking as they age, resulting in intermittent or complete loss of odometer/trip meter function. Since Volvo does not sell the gear or even the speedometer as a separate part, the repair can easily cost over $1000 at the dealer. However, an updated gear kit and DVD install guide can allow for a DIY repair for under $50 and 1-2 hours of time.
- Fuel Door Hinge Failure: The plastic gas cap door hinge on many Volvo models, including the S70, can commonly fail at around 60,000 miles. This can leave the gas door hanging from the side of the car, which is not only unsightly but can also damage the paint job. An upgrade version that uses a stronger plastic material is available to fix this problem.
- Shift Interlock Failure: The shift interlock is an electronic override that prevents the driver from being able to shift the car from “PARK” into “DRIVE” unless the driver is applying the brakes. When this part fails, the car can no longer be driven unless the driver happens to know that there is an emergency override button that can be pressed to allow the shifter to be moved. Unfortunately, the shift interlock micro-switch is no longer carried by IPD.
- ABS Control Module Failure: Many 1993-2000 850, S70, C70 and V70 models can have issues with the ABS control module that can cause the ABS warning lamp to illuminate. The most common cause is related to an internal failure of the module that causes it to erroneously report an error for a faulty right rear wheel sensor. You replace the sensor and fins that you still have the problem! Rebuilt ABS Control Modules are now available that are a fraction of the price you’d pay at the dealer and come with instructions on how to replace the module.
These common problems with the Volvo S70 can be frustrating for owners, but many of them can be resolved with relatively simple repairs or upgrades. It is important for owners to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2017-09-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1LS55AXX2
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A 45MPH COLLISION ON 9/12/2017. FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WAS IMPACTED. THE COLLISION WAS SEVERE ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG TO BLOW. HOWEVER, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT BLOW UP, DESPITE THE IMPACT HAPPENING ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. A COMPLAINT WAS SUBMITTED TO VOLVO ON 9/19/2017. A CALL FROM (201) 768-7300 WAS RECEIVED TODAY 9/20. I FORGOT TO NOTE DOWN HER NAME BUT SHE WAS A VOLVO REPRESENTATIVE. SHE CORRECTLY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO OCCUPANT WEIGHT SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THEREFORE THEY CANNOT DISCRIMINATE WHEN A CRASH IS SEVERE. HOWEVER, SHE STATED THAT BECAUSE I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON, THE SYSTEM DETECTED THAT I WAS SAFE AND THEREFORE DID NOT BLOW UP THE DRIVER AIRBAG. THIS EXPLANATION SEEMED VERY BIZARRE TO ME AS I BELIEVE IF THE CRASH WAS SEVERE ENOUGH TO BLOW UP THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, THE DRIVER AIRBAG SHOULD BLOW UP TOO, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE IMPACT WAS ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I WAS REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT THE SYSTEM WAS COMPLICATED AND THEREFORE WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND. I FOUND THIS EXPLANATION TO BE UNACCEPTABLE.

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND AS SOON AS I REACHED 60 MPH MY ETS LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH MY BRAKE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT. MY SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO AND MY CAR WAS ACTING STRANGE. I PULLED OVER AND STOPPED AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. I TURNED OFF MY CAR. I CALLED AAA AND ASKED FOR A TOW. WHILE THE TOW TRUCK WAS COMING, I TRIED TURNING MY CAR ON AGAIN AND THE ETS LIGHT CAME ON FLASHING AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. I STARTED TO GOOGLE THIS PROBLEM AND SAW MANY PEOPLE HAD THE ETS ON THEIR VOLVO RECALLED. I CALLED VOLVO AND THEY DECLINED TO HELP ME. THEY SAID I NEED TO PAY FOR A NEW ETS MODULE. THEY SAID MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE A RECALL ON IT. I FOUND THIS TO BE NOT TRUE AFTER CHECKING YOUR WEBSITE FOR RECALLS ALONG WITH ANOTHER .GOV WEBSITE. I CALLED VOLVO AGAIN AND THE SAME GUY TOLD ME NOT TO CALL THEM ANYMORE AND HE HUNG UP THE PHONE. WHEN MY CAR WAS FINALLY AT HOME, I CALLED MY MECHANIC WHO USED TO WORK AT A DIFFERENT VOLVO (30 MILES FROM WHERE I LIVE) AND HE CAME TO LOOK AT MY CAR. WE SWITCHED OUT THE BATTERY, PUT IN A NEW STARTER, NEW ALTERNATOR, SWITCHED OUT ALL MY FUSES WITH NEW FUSES, CHANGED SPARK PLUGS AND SPARK WIRES, PUT NEW COILS ON AND DID AN OIL CHANGE. THE CAR STARTED, HOWEVER THE ETS LIGHT HAS BEEN ON EVER SINCE AND WHEN I REACH HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT DOES THE SAME THING. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE. THE ETS IS RECALLED FOR MY VOLVO WHEN I ENTERED THE VIN. I NEED HELP WITH GETTING VOLVO TO FIX THE RECALL OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THE STATE PATROL DID COME BEHIND ME TO ASK IF EVERYTHING WAS OKAY AS I WAS WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK. I DON'T HAVE ANY POLICE REPORTS BUT I DO HAVE THE OFFICERS CARD IF NEEDED.

This is my first Volvo and I'm never going back! The car is comfortable on long drives, reliable, and performs great in all weather conditions.

Vehicle year: 2000
We purchased this car because of its safety features and incredibly comfortable seats. However, we experienced some issues with the cupholders in the front and the lack of a trunk light, which was disappointing given the car's price level. Additionally, we were concerned about the jerky electronic throttle (ETS), which was a safety hazard. Fortunately, Volvo took responsibility for the issue and reimbursed us for the repair, and even provided a lifetime warranty at first. However, due to a class action suit, the warranty may now be shorter. It's important to note that there is a recall for this issue, so it's recommended to have it fixed as soon as possible.

I bought my car used several months ago with 110,000 miles. I'm really impressed with it, especially considering it's 16 years old. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and the car rides smoothly and handles well in the snow. There's plenty of interior space for passengers and more than enough trunk space. Plus, it's a great value with plenty of features for the money. The SE trim comes standard with heated seats and an 8-speaker sound system. So far, my car has been reliable with no major mechanical problems. Overall, I highly recommend the 2000 Volvo S70 as a used car. I hope to keep it for as long as possible.

Vehicle year: 1998
You had it for 19 years and 190,00 miles, a pre-Ford car. It had great visibility, handling and braking, and more than adequate acceleration. Unfortunately, the dashboard squeaked and rattled, which was a widespread issue with this car. The attachments failed and repair cost was exorbitant, so it rattled for the last 10 years or so. If it wasn't for that, you would still have it.

I tried to incorporate a 9 in my ratings of perfect 10s (to make it more realistic for non-believers). But I couldn't find any particular category that I felt I should slight in any way. If anything, the performance category should be an 11, and the comfort a 12! If you own one of these cars (especially a Turbo), do not sell it to purchase something more expensive (like I did). You will find that there is nothing on the market (regardless of how much you spend) that compares to the comfort and performance this car delivers. The seats feel tailor-made, and the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are also in V-8 territory. Don't believe me? Drive one. And as for gas mileage, the turbos run on air! I get 28mpg.

As the original owner, I have a deep appreciation for the car's appearance and handling. However, I have encountered some issues with the car. The blinkers required multiple trips to the dealer to fix, and unfortunately, I eventually gave up. Additionally, the car seems to go through headlight bulbs every couple of months, which can be frustrating. I also had to replace the fan in the air conditioning, and the check engine light came on, which was an unexpected expense. Despite these challenges, I am grateful that the dealer ultimately fixed the issue for free. Overall, my relationship with Volvo has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I still have a soft spot for the car.

I bought mine at 85k miles. Although there have been a few bumps in maintenance, on multiple trips to Canada, the T5 drove like a champ with surprising power and good fuel economy. However, there were some glitches such as the speed sensors (no ABS, no odometer, no speedometer) and the need for an EVAP system replacement. The brakes also sound like a bus. It may not be cheap to own if you're not handy, but it is definitely fun to drive. It's okay for driving around town, but it's a hoot on the highway. Currently at 130k and still going strong!

If you're looking for a car, I would recommend considering a loaded used Ford Taurus that's only a year old with low mileage. They're a great option for safety and can be found for around 12 grand. It's also a good idea to get an extended warranty if you plan on keeping the car for a while. As for my personal experience, I had some issues with a Volvo that I purchased and ended up having to get rid of it. The car had a lot of problems between 40 and 50K miles, and unfortunately, my warranty only covered after-market parts which ended up being a big issue. Additionally, the resale value of the car was not great. I'm now looking into getting a Ford Focus and purchasing pillows with side airbags from Walmart. Hope this helps!

I really wanted a Volvo, but unfortunately, less than a year after purchasing my car, the check engine light went on and it has been on ever since. It's been quite a challenge trying to pass the AIMS test with that issue. I've had to pay several times to have the car hooked up to a 'Volvo' computer to get the problem codes. After a while, I just taped a picture of my dog over the numerous lights that go off and on for no apparent reason. Despite the issues, the car is comfortable inside and looks great on the outside. However, I'm not a fan of the cup holders - what genius designed those? Anyway, I hate the thought of buying another car, but if I have to, it definitely won't be a Volvo. I miss the basic designs of the 60's and 70's when you could change your own oil!
