Volvo 740 problems

The Volvo 700 series is a range of executive cars produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1982 to 1992. The 700 series was introduced in 1982 with the luxurious 760, followed two years later by the lower priced 740 which capitalized on the prestige attained by the very similar 760. The 700 series was then gradually replaced, beginning in 1990, by the 900 series. The 700, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, was originally to have been a replacement for the 200 series, but production of that model continued until the early nineties. The expensive 780, a Bertone-designed coupé version, entered production in 1986 and departed without a direct successor only four years later.

The most visible differences between the 700 and the 900 series were the more rounded corners on the body of the latter, and a somewhat better-appointed interior. The 700 series came to an end in late 1992 when the last 740s were built (although they were considered to be of model year 1993). The range had been augmented and finally supplanted by the Volvo 900 in 1993, with the last of the 900s being sold in 1998.

Volvo 740

Introduced in early 1984 (in the U.S. and Australia for the 1985 model year), the 740 arrived nearly two years after the luxurious 760. It was the lower-end version of the original 760, intended to be a mid-size car that offered more style, performance, and luxury than the 200 series. The '4' in the middle of the Volvo model name had once signified a four-cylinder engine, but by the time of the introduction of the 740 it simply meant less luxurious equipment as four- and six-cylinder engines were fitted across both ranges. The 740 was available as a four-door sedan (sometimes referred to as the 744) and a five-door station wagon (also known as the 745). The station wagon premiered simultaneously at the 1985 Toronto and Chicago auto shows in early February 1985. The wagon was aimed squarely at the North American markets and only went on sale in Europe several months later, in the fall of 1985.

The Volvo 740 was a popular choice as a police car in several parts of Europe, especially so with the police in Scandinavian countries.

For 1985, an intercooled version of the 2-litre turbo engine (B200ET) was introduced for markets such as Italy, where larger engines were heavily taxed. This unit produces 160 PS (118 kW) at 5500 rpm, ten horsepower more than the preceding non-intercooled B19ET variant, enough for a claimed 200 km/h (124 mph) top speed. Model year 1986 marked the worldwide introduction of the station wagon; other differences were limited to a new font for the "740" badging and new hubcap designs. First shown at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show with tentative specifications but only going on sale with the introduction of the 1989 model year cars, a 16-valve version of the larger B230 engine was introduced (B234). This model has nearly as much peak power as the turbo version and was Volvo's first multi-valve engine.

Common Volvo 740 problems

The Volvo 740 is a popular car known for its durability and reliability, but like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems. Here are some common issues based on complaints from Volvo 740 owners:

  • Faulty Ignition Power Stage: Another possibility for a car that won't start is a faulty ignition power stage, which can cut power to the coil, killing the spark. This issue is normally fixed at the back of the headlight on the driver's fender.
  • Faulty Noises Suppression Relay: A faulty noises suppression relay, through which power to the injectors pass, can also cause problems. Checking this relay to ensure it works properly is recommended.
  • Hot Starting Issues: Some Volvo 740 owners have reported hot starting issues, where the car refuses to start after a short stop. This problem is often caused by the fuel injection relay, and resoldering the relay can fix the issue.
  • Engine Randomly Cutting Out: Another common problem is the engine randomly cutting out, even while driving. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty leads, plugs, or a dirty distributor cap. Cleaning the distributor cap and replacing the leads and plugs can help solve this problem.
  • Lumpy Idle: A lumpy idle, particularly when the engine is cold, is a common complaint among Volvo 740 owners. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty injector seals or vacuum leaks. Checking the injector seals and intake system for vacuum leaks can help diagnose and fix this problem.
  • Faulty Sensors: Volvo 740s can also experience issues with various sensors, including the crankshaft position sensor. Replacing a faulty sensor can help resolve starting and running issues.
  • Fuel System Issues: Problems with the fuel system, including the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, can also cause issues in the Volvo 740. Testing the fuel pressure and checking for leaks in the fuel system can help diagnose and fix these problems.
  • Tire Issues: Unbalanced tire pressures can make the car not drive straight, while tire wear can lead to the need for tire rotation. Regularly checking tire pressure and condition can help maintain the car's performance and safety.

These are some of the common problems reported by Volvo 740 owners. Regular maintenance and addressing issues as they arise can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this popular vehicle.

Volvo 740

Is the Volvo 740 a reliable car?

The Volvo 740 was introduced to the US market in 1985 and production was discontinued in 1992. And throughout that time, the model has been known to be one of the most reliable 4-door sedans of its time considering the low number of engineering limitations and solid build quality which Volvo is known for.

How much is a Volvo 740 worth?

The value of a used 1991 Volvo 740 ranges from $1,361 to $9,493, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.

How safe is Volvo 740?

The 740 is also by far one of the safest cars of its era, featuring airbags, antilock brakes, crumple zones, and rollover protection.

What was the last year for the Volvo 740?

1992

Production of the 740 ceased on 2 October 1992, though the engine, transmission, chassis, and other details continued in the Volvo 940 (introduced in September 1990), which was essentially identical to the 740 with the exception of the rear of the sedans.

  • Summary: I TURNED THE IGNITION KEY AND THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG DEPLOYED, STRIKING ME IN THE FACE AND CHEST, KNOCKING ME UNCONSCIOUS AND DAMAGING MY RIGHT EYE AND BREAST AND CAUSING CHEMICAL BURNS ON MY FACE AND NECK. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND SPENT MOST OF THE NIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL AND FOLLOWUP THE FOLLOWING DAY BY EYE SURGEONS AND RETINA SPECIALISTS. I SUSTAINED PERMANENT DAMAGE TO MY RIGHT EYE WHICH RESULTED IN A BLIND-SPOT. I WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE OR WORK FOR A WEEK. I REQUIRED EXTENSIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL MONTHS AND AM STILL CLOSELY MONITORED BY THE EYE DOCTOR FOR THE DAMAGE TO MY EYE (WHICH I HAVE BEEN TOLD WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY RESULT IN GLAUCOMA). VOLVO REFUSED TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY OR MADE ANY REIMBURSEMENT FOR DAMAGES, MEDICAL OR LOSS OF MY VEHICLE AND STALLED ALL EFFORTS THROUGH THE COURT SYSTEM, EVEN AFTER INITIALLY INDICATING TO MY ATTORNEY THAT THEY WOULDN'T CONTEST SETTLEMENT. MY VEHICLE WAS 17 YEARS OLD BUT WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND WELL-MAINTAINED AND HAD RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE ACCORDING TO ALL VOLVO'S PR CLAIMS. I ENDED UP NOT HAVING MY VEHICLE AT ALL, BECAUSE VOLVO DIRECTED THAT THE CAR COULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNTIL THE CASE WAS SETTLED AND THE STORAGE FEE AT THE SERVICE SHOP ACCUMULATED TO OVER $3600, MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR AND I FINALLY SIGNED THE TITLE OVER TO THE SERVICE SHOP. *TR

  • Summary: RAPID ACCELERATION INCIDENT IN A 1990 VOLVO 740 TURBO SEDAN. GIVEN THE RECENT PRESS RE TOYOTA, I WOULD JUST LIKE IT KNOWN THAT THE ISSUE MAY EXTEND TO OTHER MANUFACTURERS AS WELL. MY VEHICLE BECAME "POSSESSED" IN A PARKING GARAGE IN DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS IN 1996. I WAS ABOUT TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, AND IT WENT INTO A SUPER HIGH SPEED REVERSE (ON ITS OWN FROM ZERO TO PERHAPS 40 MPH?) WHILE MY FOOT WAS JAMMED IN TERROR ON THE BRAKE. I WAS ABLE TO THROW THE TRANSMISSION INTO FIRST GEAR, WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, BEFORE I SMASHED INTO A CAR BEHIND ME. I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR, BUT TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, WHO COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AND FOUND NO RECALLS. I SOLD THE CAR LONG AGO, BUT THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW. I LOVE VOLVO AND STILL BELIEVE THEY ARE SAFE CARS, SO I REGRET TO BRING THIS UP.

  • Summary: IN A PARKING LOT AT A LOCAL GROCERY STORE, MY DAUGHTER AND I WENT INTO THE CAR, STARTED IT AND SHIFTED THE GEAR, WHILE HOLDING THE BRAKE, FROM PARK MODE TO REVERS MODE TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. AS SOON AS I SHIFTED IT, THE CAR TOOK OFF IN FULL SPEED BACKWARD AS IF IT WAS CRAZY, HITTING A CAR AND A PASSENGER THAT WAS COMING OUT OF THE CAR. AS MY CAR HIT THE 2ND VEHICLE'S OPEN DOOR, IT BOUNCED FORWARD, ALSO IN FULL SPEED. BY THIS TIME, I SHIFTED THE GEAR TO PARK MODE IN ATTEMPT TO STOP THE CAR. NEVERTHELESS, THE CAR FLEW AND HIT A SUV AND AS THE AIRBAG BROKE, MY CAR STOPPED. THE SUV WAS THEN SANDWICHED IN BETWEEN MY CAR AND A PARKED CAR IN FRONT OF IT. BOTH CARS WERE EMPTY BUT THE PASSENGER FROM THE FIRST CAR WAS BADLY BRUISED IN HER SIDE AND KNEE. THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAD OCCURED AND THE TIRE MARKS REMAINED FROM THE STARTING LOCATION TO THE END BECAUSE I WAS PUSHING THE BRAKE ALL THE TIME, NEVERTHELESS, THE CAR FLEW UNINTENTIONALLY. SINCE IT IS A VERY UNUSUAL CASE, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO THE CAR YET AND I WILL PROBABLY TOTAL THAT CAR.

Latest negative Volvo 740 car reviews

  1. Christ Brakus 2024-11-10

    Vehicle year: 1991

I've owned this car for over 12 years and have driven it for more than 100k miles. It has been pretty reliable, but a full service history is a must. The engine has never leaked and only burns a quart of oil every 2.5-3k miles. The transmission has a slight slip in reverse, but all other original parts, including the alternator, starter, radiator, front struts, and electrics, are still in good condition. There are virtually no sunroof leaks, rattles, or squeaks. The only real repeat problem areas have been emissions electronics, engine management, and brakes. The brakes perform wonderfully, but it's not unusual for me to get only 10k miles from the pads and 2-3 times that for rotors.

  2. Marco Crist 2024-10-27

    Vehicle year: 1992

Your 740 Turbo is a fantastic machine, even with 197,000+ miles on it! The acceleration is great and it can leave newer and sportier looking cars in the dust. According to road tests of the day, it did 0-60 in 7.8 seconds, which is impressive. The handling is also nice, with quick response and a great turning radius, making it overall fun to drive. Although there may be a little too much body lean, it's still a good car. Additionally, it's very comfortable on long trips and has plenty of space in the back for all your stuff. However, fuel economy and noise may be concerns.

  3. Deven Torphy 2024-10-02

    Vehicle year: 1990

I bought this car the day my eldest son was born and 18 years later I'm still driving it. It has proven to be a great investment. After a few tire changes, a brake job, a brake booster replacement, a heater core replacement, and a new battery, it's still kicking and wanting to go even more.

We had a 1991 740 from the summer of '91 until the fall of '97, when we traded it away. The seats were great, and the ride was firm but solid. However, there were higher interior noise levels than earlier 740s, which I'm told was due to Volvo removing sound absorption materials to reduce weight. Unfortunately, we and that car never quite got along. It's a long story as to why we owned it for so long, but that was our one and only Volvo. It made it to about 125,000 miles, but even the windshield wipers were problematic, to give you an idea. I really wanted a Saab 900, but our local dealer was very low volume and couldn't seem to get in one that was both a 4 door and an automatic in light blue. However, we're now happy with our comfortable and reliable Lincoln.

I invested in Volvo in 1991 with considerable money. I had two new children and thought I was investing in safety and quality. I am one to drive a car for its full life (i.e. 10-15 years).

This car is amazing! When I bought it, it had 167,000 miles and the power is still great. The turbo is incredible! I've gone around 'playing' before in this car, and even with an automatic, it easily peels out. The interior looks good, I just need to get the leather redone (it is a 13-year-old car). The gas mileage is pretty decent, and of course, the car is very safe, typical of Volvo. I would highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a cheap, quick, and safe ride!

This car is a great choice for any new owner. While it may take some time to learn how to operate it properly, it is a very sturdy and reliable vehicle that can handle most driving conditions with the right tires. As an older car, it may have some trouble starting in cold weather, but with a little patience, it always gets going. I highly recommend this car to any teenager looking for their first vehicle as it teaches responsibility and is a joy to drive. I have put a lot of work into this car to get it where it is today, and it runs like a champ! I even take it out and autocross it on weekends. Volvos are known for their durability and strength, and I have always loved mine.

I am so happy with my Volvo! It has been with me for six years and it still runs like new, even with 485,787 miles on it. The transmission and engine are smooth and everything still works perfectly. I admit, I push it to the limit at street lights, but it's as tough as a tank and as fast as a hot rod. I only need to change the oil every 3 thousand miles or so and I only had to change the battery once. I paid only $600 for it and someone even offered me $4,000 for it, but I would never sell it. Once you own a Volvo, you'll never want anything else! Thank you for considering Volvo!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it back in July 2004 with 199,000 miles on it and recently sold it to a friend with 216,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved how it was built for highway cruising, and even though it only gave 16 mpg in the city, it was amazing to get 35 mpg on the highway! I never felt stressed during my 8-10 hour trips. The best part was that it was incredibly reliable, and I only had to change the rotors and pads, and get the alternator fixed during the 2.5 years I had it. These are just maintenance items that need repair/replacement every 6-7 years when well maintained. The original automatic transmission was rock solid, and everything worked perfectly. Thank you for letting me share my experience with you!
