Volvo C70 convertible problems

The Volvo C70 is a two-door, four-passenger sports GT manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2013 across two generations.

The first generation (1996–2005) was available as both a coupé (1996–2002) and softtop convertible (1997–2005). The second generation (2006–2013) was available as a retractable hardtop convertible.

First generation (1996–2005)

Volvo debuted the first generation C70 at the 1996 Paris Motor Show, and introduced it in Europe as a 1997 model, and a year later as a 1998 model in North America — with 2.0 (sold mostly in Italy), a low-pressure turbo (2.4L) and a high-pressure turbo (2.0L and 2.3L), 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Ian Callum designed the exterior and Mexican designer Jose Diaz de la Vega led the interior design team.

The C70 broke Volvo's decades-long styling tradition of boxy, rectilinear designs and was Volvo's first luxury coupe since the 780. According to a tongue-in-check remark made by Peter Horbury, Volvo's design chief from 1991 to 2002, with the C70, Volvo "kept the toy, and threw away the box!" "Our vision was to design a convertible that would meet the needs of a family of four looking for comfortable blue-sky motoring in a vehicle also providing stylish looks, performance and faultless driving and road-holding."

In a development program of 30 months and working with a Volvo 850-derived platform, Britain’s TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) co-designed the car's basic design and suspension tuning with Volvo. Manufacture of the C70 was a joint venture until the two companies experienced disputes that threatened to interrupt production; TWR did not contribute to the second generation C70.

Volvo's first modern convertible, the C70 was manufactured in Uddevalla, Sweden on an assembly line separate from the 70-series sedan and station wagon. The four-passenger convertible featured an electrically heated glass rear window; automatic (pop-up) rollover hoops system, marketed as ROPS; seat belt pre-tensioners; A-pillars reinforced with boron steel; front and side airbags; and a safety cage — a horseshoe-like structure around the passenger compartment.

The cloth convertible top, initially available in four colors, was fully automatic, operated by a single, dashboard-mounted control. The top stored automatically under an integral rigid tonneau cover, using a system pioneered in modern convertibles with the fourth generation Mercedes SL.

The C70 convertible exhibited two negative traits endemic to convertibles: poor rear visibility and pronounced scuttle shake, a characteristic where the structural design of the bulkhead between the engine and passenger compartments of a convertible suffers sufficiently poor rigidity to negatively impact ride and handling — and allow noticeable vibration, shudder or chassis-flexing into the passenger compartment.

Early special editions featured two-tone leather interior with wood trim and a SC-901 (1998) Dolby Pro Logic I stereo with 3-disc integrated changer unit (via a cartridge) 400 watts of power and 11 high end Dynaudio speakers.

Common Volvo C70 convertible problems

The Volvo C70 Convertible is known for its unique features, such as side curtain airbags, which are not common in convertibles. Here are some common problems with the Volvo C70 Convertible based on complaints from owners:

  • Convertible Top Problems: The convertible top of the Volvo C70 Convertible has been reported to have problems with micro-switches/potentiometers.
  • Squeaks and Rattles: Squeaks and rattles are a common issue with the Volvo C70 Convertible, ranging in severity from a minor irritation to a major annoyance.
  • Brittle Cabin Trim: The cabin trim in the Volvo C70 Convertible can become brittle, particularly around the center console and armrest area. This can lead to cracks and other damage, which can be expensive to repair.
  • Electrical Failure: Complete electrical failure is a known issue with the Volvo C70 Convertible. This can be a major problem and may require significant repairs to fix.
  • Ride Quality: The ride quality of the Volvo C70 Convertible can be negatively affected by the use of 18-inch alloy wheels, which are standard on SE Lux models.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension problems can lead to uneven tyre wear and signs of kerbing damage on the wheels. If not addressed, these issues can lead to more serious problems, such as driveshaft damage.
  • Airbag Recall Work: It is important to check that recall work on the airbags has been done, as this is a known issue with the Volvo C70 Convertible. A Volvo dealer should be able to check this for you.
  • Hood Wear and Tear: The hood of the Volvo C70 Convertible can wear out and tear over time, which can be expensive to replace. It is important to check the hood for any signs of wear and tear and ensure that it folds without any problems.
  • Leaking Door Mirrors: The Volvo C70 Convertible is known to have a problem with leaking door mirrors, which can be difficult to fix. It is important to check the footwell carpets for any signs of wetness, as this may indicate a problem with the door mirrors.

In summary, the Volvo C70 Convertible is known for its unique features, such as side curtain airbags, but it is not considered very sporty or comfortable to drive. Common problems with the Volvo C70 Convertible include issues with the convertible top, squeaks and rattles, brittle cabin trim, electrical failure, ride quality, suspension problems, airbag recall work, hood wear and tear, and leaking door mirrors. It is important to be aware of these issues and to check for them when considering purchasing a Volvo C70 Convertible.

  • Components: STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT

Volvo C70 convertible 1999
  • Date Of Incident: 2010-05-21
  • Date Complaint: 2010-06-03
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: YV1NC56D9XJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
  • Summary: MY BRAKES WERE MAKING A WEIRD SQUEAKING NOISE IN FRONT. I TOOK TO ORANGE COUNTY VOLVO DEALER TWICE, BOTH TIMES WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS WRONG. TWO WEEKS LATER, I EXPERIENCED COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE,WITHOUT WARNING AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP WAS TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, THERE WERE NO OTHER WARNINGS PRIOR TO COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. I CALLED MY DEALER WHO DENIED ANY PROBLEMS. I HAD IT TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALER (POWER VOLVO)WHO IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A COMPLETE BRAKE BOOSTER FAILURE. MY DEALER SAID THERE WAS NO WAY THE NOISE I PREVIOUSLY COMPLAINED ABOUT (WEIRD SQUEAK)COULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO A BRAKE BOOSTER PROBLEM(HE SAID BOOSTER FAILURE MAKES A HISSING SOUND). VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA (VONA) "INSPECTED" THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE PROBLEM IS "INTERMITTENT" AND THAT WHEN THEY DROVE IT, THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM, BUT THAT DUE TO THE FACT THAT POWER VOLVO EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THE BOOSTER, IT SHOULD BE REPLACED FOR SAFETY REASONS. IN A VOICE MESSAGE TO ME, VONA STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A "SAFETY HAZARD" BUT SINCE MY CAR WAS "SO FAR OUT OF WARRANTY," VONA WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE COST OF THE BOOSTER REPLACEMENT (NEARLY $3,000). THEY DENIED THAT IT WAS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR, AND DENIED THAT THE DEALER IMPROPERLY DIAGNOSED PROBLEM. PRIOR TO INSPECTION, VONA SAID THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE FIX IF THE BOOSTER "FAILED TO PERFORM AS DESIGNED." NOW THEY SAY THAT THE BOOSTER WAS NOT DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ANY INDICATION THAT IT WAS GOING TO FAIL PRIOR TO CAUSING A COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. SO, BASICALLY, VONA SAYS IT IS PROPER FOR THESE BOOSTERS TO FAIL, AND IT IS PROPER FOR THEM TO FAIL SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING A COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES. AND THAT THIS IS NORMAL. LATER VERSIONS OF VOLVOS HAVE BRAKE FAILURE LIGHTS. MY MAKE AND MODEL DOES NOT. I COULD HAVE DIED AND/OR KILLED SOMEONE, AND VOLVO DOES NOT CARE. LUCKILY I WAS TRAVELING SLOWLY COASTING TOWARD A STOP SIGN WHEN THIS HAPPENED. *TR
Volvo C70 convertible 2000
  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-06
  • Date Complaint: 2010-04-07
  • VIN: YV1NC56D5Y1
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO C70. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH BACKING OUT OF A PARKING LOT. THE ENGINE AND ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IMMEDIATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AT A SLOW SPEED RATE. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO OPERATE NORMAL. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER WHICH STATED THE RECALL EXPIRED AND THE REPAIR COST WOULD BE AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,523. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,909.
Volvo C70 convertible 2000
  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-05
  • Date Complaint: 2010-03-12
  • VIN: YV1NC56D7YJ
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2000 C70 VOLVO. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE ETM - ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. RECALL IS FOR 200K MILES OR 10 YEARS. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 79K MILES. VOLVO RECALL # MR155. NTSB ACTION # PE5041. MY VEHICLE IS SURGING VIOLENTLY WHICH IS SYMPTOMATIC OF THE ETM FAILURE AS INDICATED BY YOUR ACTION # PE5041. I CALLED VOLVO NA AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE RECALL WAS 10 YEARS/200K MILES. HOWEVER, THEY SAID THAT AFTER CHECKING THE VIN HISTORY ON MY VEHICLE, THEY SAID I WOULD NOT BE COVERED BECAUSE THE SALE DATE OF THE CAR WAS NOV. 1999 AND 10 YEARS HAD ALREADY PASSED ON MY MODEL YEAR 2000 CAR! THIS DEFECT IS SAFETY RELATED AND VOLVO AGREES THEY ARE AT FAULT PER THE RECALL. THE CUT OFF THAT VOLVO IS IMPOSING IS UNFAIR AS MY CAR IS A YEAR 2000 AND 10 YEAR RECALL COVERAGE WOULD ALLOW ME TO BE COVERED THROUGH 2010. ALSO, IN NOV. 2008 VOLVO WAS INSTRUCTED BY NHTSA TO RENOTIFY OWNERS OF VEHICLES ABOUT SAFETY RECALL 06V-441 AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS RECALL AT THE TIME, OR EVER. REPAIR COST IS ESTIMATED AT $1K PER VOLVO OF NASHUA, NH OF WHICH APPROX $600 ARE PARTS AND MATERIAL. FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THIS SURGING WAS IN FEB. 2010. PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE AND IS NOW VIOLENTLY SURGING. SOMETIMES THE GAS PEDAL DOESN'T GIVE GAS TO MAKE THE CAR MOVE AT ALL. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET SERIOUSLY HURT. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED NOW! MY KIDS DRIVE THIS CAR AS WELL. I PURCHASED VOLVO FOR THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS UNFAIR AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND BE FIX AT NO CHARGE TO ME. *TR
Volvo C70 convertible 2001
  • Date Of Incident: 2009-12-22
  • Date Complaint: 2010-02-22
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2001 VOLVO C70 CONVERTIBLE USED WITH ~ 73,000 MILES IN 2006. IT NOW HAS 93,000 MILES. LAST SUMMER I HAD TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR BECAUSE IT CRACKED. ON THE EVENING OF TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22 WHILE RETURNING HOME ON THE BELTWAY, I BEGAN TO SMELL SOMETHING AND AN UP ARROW INDICATING I SHOULD SHIFT GEAR LIT ON THE DASHBOARD PANEL. I LEARNED TWO DAYS LATER, I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. NOW I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A FUEL PUMP RECALL. THIS SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF MAJOR REPAIR WORK IN A FAIRLY YOUNG VEHICLE WITH SO FEW MILES, AND REGULAR OIL CHANGES AT EVERY 3,000 MILES AND ANNUAL CHECKUPS. *TR
Volvo C70 convertible 2001
  • Date Of Incident: 2007-11-14
  • Date Complaint: 2008-05-09
  • VIN: YV1NC56D61J
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO C70 CONVERTIBLE. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE STALLS, BUT THEN DRIVES NORMALLY. THE FAILURE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY AND THE CONTACT DID NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE VEHICLE BEFOREHAND. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN A CRASH AND HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) WAS REFERENCED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 66,521 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. UPDATED 6/2/08 *CN THE DEALER CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED.

  • Fire: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: DRIVING HOME FROM THEATER, SMELLED ELECTRICAL TYPE SMELL. TURNED OFF RADIO, AIR CONDITIONER ETC...WE WERE CLOSE TO HOME AND IT WAS DARK. PARKED CAR. NEXT MORNING WENT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD OF CAR AND FOUND A HOLE IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL FUSE BOX (MELTED PLASTIC). PRIED OFF AND DISCOVERED A ROW OF FUSES BURNT TO A CRISP. AIR IS NOW NOT WORKING...OBVIOUSLY SOME TYPE OF ELECTRICAL SHORT OR FIRE. WE HAVE HAD NO MAJOR WORK DONE ON CAR. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO. TAKING CAR TO DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. *TR
Volvo C70 convertible 2000
  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-12
  • Date Complaint: 2006-06-19
  • VIN: YV1NC56DXYJ
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2000 VOLVO C70 CONVERTIBLE HAS NEEDED TWO AIRBAGS REPLACED IN LESS THAN 5000 MILES. THESE ARE NOT ACCIDENT RELATED. VOLVO INFORMS ME THIS IS ORDINARY AND THEY HOLD NO RESPONSIBILITY. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR THAT NEEDED AIRBAG REPLACEMENT. TOO BE SUCH A "SAFE" CAR THIS DOESN'T SEEM CORRECT. DO THEY HAVE A RECALL OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT? WHAT CAN BE DONE OTHER THAN PAYING $800.00 EVERY FIVE THOUSAND MILES? CAR HAS 50000 MILES ON IT. *JB
Volvo C70 convertible 1999
  • Date Of Incident: 2005-09-02
  • Date Complaint: 2006-01-28
  • VIN: YV1NC53D2XJ
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: VOLVO C70 PRESENTED A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE REVVING AND DOWN BY ITSELF, AND MOSTLY NOTICEABLE WHILE STANDING STILL AT IDLE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM AND THROTTLE) BODY ALONG WITH SOME OTHER PARTS. I PAID AND HAD THE REPAIRS COMPLETED. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THEY PUT A NEW ETM IN, BUT THAT THE ETM LIGHT INDICATOR ON THE DASHBOARD CAME ON, WHICH WAS NOT THE CASE WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR IN. THEY PUT A SECOND ONE IN AND THE LIGHT CAME OFF. I TOOK POSSESSION OF THE CAR AND DROVE TO WORK. AFTER WORK I DROVE HOME, AND THE ETM LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I THOUGHT THE LIGHT WAS NOT A PROBLEM SINCE I WAS TOLD SO BY THE DEALER.*AK A FEW MONTHS LATER WHILE NAVIGATING THE WEB I FOUND A FORUM MENTIONING THAT VOLVO HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE ETMS. SEVERAL SITES CLAIM VOLVO IS TRYING TO HIDE THE PROBLEM AND NOT TAKING SUFFICIENT ACTIONS TO INFORM CUSTOMERS. SINCE LIGHT IS STILL ON NOW, I WILL TAKE MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND FIGHT WITH THEM, BUT WANTED TO INFORM NHTSA OF MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR.*AK
