The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car first unveiled at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show, both assembled at Ghent, Belgium. The V50 T5 AWD featured all-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5 litre petrol engine, with a light pressure turbocharger, four valves per cylinder and a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing — providing 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) of torque. Diesel options were available in Europe, including a 2.4 Litre turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provided 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque.
Within the United States, Volvo limited sales of the V50 PZEV cars to states where it was required, including California, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington.
Volvo Cars Special Vehicle produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (254 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

ELECTRONICS BEGAN TO QUIT WORKING WHILE TRAVELING. WE TOOK THE CAR INTO A DEALERSHIP SERVICE GARAGE AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. THEY WERE UNABLE TO START THE ENGINE, AND COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY CALLED VOLVO WHO TOLD THEM THE V50 HAD A KNOWN DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP THAT CAUSED OTHER PARTS TO CORRODE. VOLVO SECRETLY CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT WATER PUMP IN NEW CARS AFTER DISCOVERING THIS DEFECT : BUT DID NOT NOTIFY OWNERS OR ISSUE A RECALL. THIS PUMP LEAKS WASHER FLUID, DRIPPING ONTO THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS AND CEM MAINFRAME COMPUTER WHICH CONTROLS THE ENGINE, CAUSING THE INABILITY TO START OR SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE, SECURITY ALARM TO ACTIVATE INTERMITTENTLY WITH NO PROVOCATION, DISABLED KEY FOB ENTRY, AND OTHER INTERMITTENT ISSUES RELATED TO ELECTRONICS. THESE PARTS WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED AND FRIED. IF THIS FAILED WHILE DRIVING AND HAD STOPPED THE ENGINE, THE SAME RESULTS WOULD HAVE OCCURRED AS THE GM CHEVROLET IGNITION PROBLEM. WITH NO ENGINE, THE CONTROLS TO POWER BRAKES, POWER STEERING AND AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WOULD BE INACTIVE. VOLVO COVERED ONLY THE COST OF THE PARTS, BUT LEFT US WITH A $3000 BILL FOR THE LABOR PORTION. THEY TOLD US THAT BECAUSE OF THE CARS AGE AND MILEAGE AND A "LOYALTY" FACTOR, THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE LABOR COSTS. THEY SAID THEY WOULD ONLY COVER LABOR IF THERE WAS A RECALL, WHICH THEY HAVEN'T DONE. WE OWN 2 VOLVO'S AND OUR DAUGHTER PURCHASED A VOLVO ON OUR RECOMMENDATION JUST BEFORE THIS FAILURE. I've received a lot of positive feedback from other drivers about the V50, and I have to say, it's a blast to drive! Volvo is well-known for their safety features, and this car is no exception. The 218 horsepower engine and Japanese-made transmission make for a dreamy driving experience. It's easy to reach high speeds and still feel like you're going slow. The acceleration is quick, and it leaves many other cars in the dust. In my opinion, Volvo nailed it with the styling, interior, safety features, and overall performance. I even upgraded the wheels to 17 inches and tinted the windows, and it really stands out on the road.

You have a 2.4i auto with sport package and premium audio, which sounds amazing! It must be so much fun to drive, especially with the fresh and attention-grabbing exterior, especially in your rare safari color. While there are some minor issues with the dynamic side, such as excessive spin-off on wet roads and less than expected acceleration uphill, overall it still sounds like a great ride. I can imagine that switching from manual transmission to automatic can be a bit jarring, but it's great to hear that the interior is well-thought-out, aesthetic, versatile, and unique. Although you mentioned that some extra headroom and better road visibility would be helpful, it still sounds like there's plenty of space everywhere.

I'm really enjoying my first new car! It drives wonderfully and I haven't had any problems yet (although I've only driven 2000 miles so far). The back seat is a bit tight if you have tall passengers in the front, but the cargo room is great and the size of the vehicle is perfect for navigating New York City. Sometimes I catch myself looking out the window at my car parked outside and notice pedestrians admiring it as they walk past - it's definitely a head-turner! Plus, it's nice to have something a bit different from all the BMWs and Audis that are so common here.

This is an awesome car! It's a great combination of power, fun, and economy. It passes even better than my old Olds Jetstar with a 425! It cruises at 90 across S. Colorado and N. New Mexico and gets 27.5 mpg while doing it. If you keep it at the speed limit on the highway, you can get 31 mpg, and around town, you can get 25 mpg. It can easily carry my 2 dogs or lots of gear. It's the perfect size for my wife and me. I love this car!

I have driven a number of Ford Focus cars, but every time I drove my wife's V50, I felt a tinge of jealousy. Finally, I found an '07 V50 for myself, and it has truly changed my life. Despite having 119k miles on it, I knew I would have to do some work on it, but I didn't mind. For what I paid for it, I was well ahead of the game, and I enjoy working on cars. The simple Swedish design is often talked about, but what people don't mention is how well-insulated the car is. It's incredibly quiet and warm. While all cars have their problems, this one is worth it. I have several nice cars and trucks, but I am The Mustang Chef, and I think Volvos are cool. I still have my V50, and I love it. I even use it to pull my rowing shell, which cost more than the car itself. I'm looking for another 2007 silver V50 so I can replace it without my boss knowing I bought another one! I would love a 2015 V60, but I hope the Chinese aren't messing them up. As we head into the winter of 2019/20, I'm still pulling my rowing shell with my V50 and still getting compliments on it. I've put it away for the winter now and will save it for lake trips and regattas only. A few months ago, I put it up for sale on Craigslist, but the huge amount of interest woke me back up, and I took it off the listing. I'm so happy I still have it. By the way, my daily driver now is a Focus ST, and it's an absolute blast! As of November 26, 2020, my 2007 Volvo V50 still tows my rowing shell. It won't quit, and it's almost embarrassing. At 232k miles, I just put new shocks and struts on it. I would never dream of doing that to another vehicle with that many miles. It doesn't even burn oil! Next spring, I'll replace the timing belt for the second time. How did they make this car so quiet?

As soccer parents, we spend most of our weekends on the road, shuttling our kids from one event to another. Therefore, we need a spacious and reliable car. Although the first 2 years were fine, the last 2 years have been quite challenging. Unfortunately, the car has been in the shop almost every month! The electronic system keeps failing, and we have been receiving all kinds of scary warning signs such as Engine Failure, Break Failure, and Transmissions failure! This week was particularly difficult as the immobilizer warning came on, and the key got stuck at position 1. We had to get it towed to the shop. Despite many software upgrades, Volvo has not been able to fix the problem. Therefore, we would not recommend buying this car if you do not want to find yourself stranded 200 miles away from home.

The Check Engine light is related to fuel pressure, and the fuel tank has difficulty accepting more than a gallon of gas at a time. Additionally, the cruise control is not functioning properly, with sudden jerks and changes in speed due to a fault in the module. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the car's potential.

My car has 156,000KM on it and I bought it as a demo with 22,000KM in Canada. It has been reliable and well-maintained. Although there were a few repairs needed, including the ambient temperature gauge which caused the A/C to malfunction, the A/C air compressor which died around 130,000km, both wheel bearings, both front shocks, and a fuel line sensor that caused the car to shut down while driving, it has only left me stranded once. Overall, I am confident in saying that it is a great car.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with Volvo. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with my second wagon in the past year. The first one turned out to be a lemon, and the second one has had some problems with the air conditioning, electrical system, and brakes. I'm a bit disappointed, but I think it's important to share my experience. If you're looking for a wagon with no hassle, I would suggest considering other options.
