Volvo V50 problems
The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car first unveiled at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show, both assembled at Ghent, Belgium. Sharing the Volvo P1 platform with the European Ford Focus and the Mazda 3, the V50 featured interior "theatre" lighting, a floating center stack and "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture".
Overview
The V50 T5 AWD featured all-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5 litre petrol engine, with a light pressure turbocharger, four valves per cylinder and a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing — providing 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) of torque. Diesel options were available in Europe, including a 2.4 Litre turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provided 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque.
Within the United States, Volvo limited sales of the V50 PZEV cars to states where it was required, including California, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington.
Volvo Cars Special Vehicle produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (254 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Common Volvo V50 problems
Common Problems with Volvo V50 Cars Based on Complaints from Owners
- Abnormal Noise From the Power Steering Pump: Another common problem with Volvo V50 cars is abnormal noise from the power steering pump. This issue can make driving the car uncomfortable and may indicate a more serious problem with the power steering system.
- Faulty Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): The anti-lock braking system (ABS) in Volvo V50 cars has been reported to have issues, as noted by RepairPal. Faulty ABS can lead to safety concerns and should be addressed promptly to ensure the car's safety.
- Alternator and Battery Issues: As the car ages and reaches higher mileage, the alternator and battery may need to be replaced, as suggested by a Volvo owner in a forum post. These components are crucial for the car's electrical system and should be checked regularly.
- Worn Clutch: The clutch may become worn around 100,000 miles, as mentioned by a Volvo owner in a forum post. It is essential to monitor the clutch's condition and replace it if necessary to avoid more severe issues with the transmission.
- Worn Suspension Components: Suspension components, such as lower suspension arms and drop links, may need to be replaced due to wear, as suggested by a Volvo owner in a forum post. These components are critical for the car's handling and should be checked regularly.
- Faulty Air Conditioning Condenser: The air conditioning condenser is known to work its way through in Volvo V50 cars, as noted by a Volvo owner in a forum post. It is essential to ensure the climate control blows cold to avoid discomfort during hot weather.
- Recalled for Potential Leaks in Fuel Pipes and Power Steering Pipes: The Volvo V50 has been recalled numerous times for potential leaks in fuel pipes and power steering pipes, as reported by What Car. It is crucial to ensure that any recalls have been carried out to avoid safety concerns.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Issues: If the car has a diesel engine, it may have a DPF that requires new Eolys fluid every 37,000 miles or so to allow the DPF to operate at lower temperatures. Failure to do so can result in expensive repairs.
- Timing Belt and Tensioners: If the car has a five-cylinder engine, it is essential to ensure that the timing belt and tensioners have been changed every four years or 60,000 miles. Failure to do so can result in a four-figure repair bill for a wrecked engine.
- Sunroof Drains: Sunroof drains can get clogged with dirt and leaves, which can result in wet interior carpets. It is essential to ensure that the sunroof drains are clean and functioning correctly to avoid water damage to the car's interior.
In summary, Volvo V50 cars have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include climate control system malfunctions, abnormal noises from the power steering pump, faulty ABS, alternator and battery issues, worn clutch and suspension components, faulty air conditioning condensers, recalled fuel and power steering pipes, DPF issues, timing belt and tensioners, and sunroof drains. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent or address these issues promptly.
What is the problem with the Volvo V50?
The V50 has been recalled numerous times, most noticeably for potential leaks in the fuel pipes and power steering pipes, faulty handbrakes and faulty cooling fans.
Which Volvo V50 to avoid?
Engines to avoid 1.8, 2.0, 1.6d(<-2010). Those small petrol engines (ford engines) are thirsty for oil like VAGs. You have been warned. The 1.8i petrol is known for oil consumption issues but the 2.0i petrol is not commonly affected.
Are Volvo V50s reliable?
They are normally very reliable and comfortable but are expensive for spares and regular servicing. They are a safety first company and my favorite is the V70,however my existing car is the V50.
How many miles can a Volvo V50 last?
The estimated lifespan of a Volvo V50 is 204,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

- VIN: YV1390MWXA2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I TOOK MY NEWLY PURCHASED, USED V50 WAGON TO MY VOLVO DEALER. THE SERVICE TECH DEMONSTRATED THAT THE WINDSHIELD HAS BECOME UNSEALED FROM FRAME. IT WAS/IS LOOSE, AND CAN BE PARTIALLY PUSHED OUT. THEY HAD FOUND WET CARPET IN MY CAR. IT IS STILL LEAKING (THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT). Volvo V50 2005
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-01
- Date Complaint: 2018-02-09
- VIN: YV1MW382852
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2005 VOLVO V50 HAS INTERMITTENT STARTING ISSUES. THE ENGINE CRANKS AND FUEL PUMP CAN BE HEARD WHEN KEY IS TURNED IN IGNITION BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT TURN OVER/START. AFTER 10-15 (SOMETIMES MORE) ATTEMPTS AT STARTING THE VEHICLE, FUEL PRESSURE APPEARS TO BUILD SLOWLY WITH EACH ATTEMPT AND THE ENGINE WILL SOMETIMES START. IF THE VEHICLE DOES START IT IS OPERABLE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS AND CAN BE DRIVEN NORMALLY. THE CAR WILL RE-START WITHOUT ISSUE IF THE ENGINE HAS RUN WITHIN A FEW HOURS OF THE ATTEMPT. AFTER 24-36 HOURS OF BEING OFF THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY STARTING AGAIN. I BELIEVE THE PEM (PUMP ELECTRONICS MODULE) IS FAULTY IN MY VEHICLE - VOLVO ISSUED RECALL 190 TO ADDRESS THIS BUT NOW REFUSES TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE OR PROVIDE ME WITH DOCUMENTATION SUFFICIENT TO ENSURE ME THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN.

Volvo V50 2009
- Date Of Incident: 2014-02-28
- Date Complaint: 2014-03-21
- VIN: YV1MW382X92
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: FAILURE TO NOTIFY OWNERS OF A POTENTIALLY DEADLY, KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART THAT RESULTS IN MASSIVE CORROSION OF ELECTRONICS AND CEM CAUSING ENGINE TO QUIT WORKING. ELECTRONICS BEGAN TO QUIT WORKING WHILE TRAVELING. WE TOOK THE CAR INTO A DEALERSHIP SERVICE GARAGE AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. THEY WERE UNABLE TO START THE ENGINE, AND COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY CALLED VOLVO WHO TOLD THEM THE V50 HAD A KNOWN DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP THAT CAUSED OTHER PARTS TO CORRODE. VOLVO SECRETLY CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT WATER PUMP IN NEW CARS AFTER DISCOVERING THIS DEFECT : BUT DID NOT NOTIFY OWNERS OR ISSUE A RECALL. THIS PUMP LEAKS WASHER FLUID, DRIPPING ONTO THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS AND CEM MAINFRAME COMPUTER WHICH CONTROLS THE ENGINE, CAUSING THE INABILITY TO START OR SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE, SECURITY ALARM TO ACTIVATE INTERMITTENTLY WITH NO PROVOCATION, DISABLED KEY FOB ENTRY, AND OTHER INTERMITTENT ISSUES RELATED TO ELECTRONICS. THESE PARTS WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED AND FRIED. IF THIS FAILED WHILE DRIVING AND HAD STOPPED THE ENGINE, THE SAME RESULTS WOULD HAVE OCCURRED AS THE GM CHEVROLET IGNITION PROBLEM. WITH NO ENGINE, THE CONTROLS TO POWER BRAKES, POWER STEERING AND AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WOULD BE INACTIVE. VOLVO COVERED ONLY THE COST OF THE PARTS, BUT LEFT US WITH A $3000 BILL FOR THE LABOR PORTION. THEY TOLD US THAT BECAUSE OF THE CARS AGE AND MILEAGE AND A "LOYALTY" FACTOR, THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE LABOR COSTS. THEY SAID THEY WOULD ONLY COVER LABOR IF THERE WAS A RECALL, WHICH THEY HAVEN'T DONE. WE OWN 2 VOLVO'S AND OUR DAUGHTER PURCHASED A VOLVO ON OUR RECOMMENDATION JUST BEFORE THIS FAILURE. WE ASKED THAT THEY ALSO PICK THE LABOR COSTS REGARDLESS AND THEY REFUSED. THIS COULD LEAD TO A POTENTIAL DEADLY RESULT SIMILAR TO THE GM IGNITION PROBLEM & COVER-UP. *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2013-10-30
- Date Complaint: 2013-11-22
- VIN: YV1672MW4B2
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: BOTH FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED AFTER LOW MILEAGE AND JUST PAST WARRANTY. FAILURE OF BEARINGS LEAD TO ABS BRAKE SYSTEM BEING INOPERATIVE UNTIL REPAIR CONCLUDED. AS PART OF REPAIR, VOLVO ENGINEERED RETAINING RINGS WERE FITTED. THIS INDICATES AN ADMISSION BY VOLVO OF THE INADEQUACY OF THE ORIGINAL PART DESIGN. *TR

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it pre-owned in 2018 with 45,500 miles and now it has 58,750 miles. I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it at all! I've been sure to keep up with routine maintenance, including replacing the battery, tires, and timing belt at 50K. Overall, it's been a great car and very reliable.

I sold my Jeep because it was too thirsty and bought this V50. The quality is awesome! Although it doesn't have the same power and torque as the Jeep, it serves its purpose as a utility vehicle. I don't agree with other reviewers who complain about road noise, because it's MUCH less compared to the Jeep. The seats fold flat, and even the passenger seat folds down, which is great for carrying my two kids, their bicycles, balls, and toys in the back cargo space, with space to spare. The car drives smoothly, and the audio system is good. It's just perfect for a small family. The only issue I have is the gas mileage. I haven't reached the 31 mpg as the manufacturer stated, but I still average about 25-26 mpg in mixed driving.

The Volvo V50 is my first high-end car and it has not disappointed me. The car looks neat and has performed very well so far. I did not even notice the speed when cruising at 75 mph on the 476 Blue Route. The ride is quiet and the feel is quite snug in this little wagon. As new grandparents, we wanted to be safe carting our new charge around and I think we made the right move.

If you're looking for a flexible vehicle for a small family, this one is definitely worth considering. The power is solid, even with auto, although it doesn't feel as quick as I expected. The seats are super comfortable, and the new cloth/suede material is very nice and seems to be more durable than old Volvo cloth/vinyl interiors. While the gas tank is a little small compared to other Volvos, we still average 27 mpg in mixed driving, with the best being 30. We already have snow on the ground, and the DTSC keeps it sure-footed, even without AWD. I'm not convinced that AWD is worth the extra cost, especially considering the loss in mpg.

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you have had a positive experience with Volvo in the past and that this car has met your needs. The turbo and spacious interior sound like fantastic features. It's understandable to feel some concern about the end of the warranty period, but I'm sure you'll continue to enjoy your car for many miles to come. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Avoid purchasing used VOLVOs as they may require costly repairs and may not last beyond 5 years. The head gasket issue is a common problem that can lead to significant expenses. It is recommended to consider other options before investing in a used VOLVO.

We were aware that this was a small wagon when we purchased it, but we found it to be quite cramped! If you're looking for a vehicle with more cargo space than a sedan but less than an SUV, this would be a functional and enjoyable vehicle to drive. However, with two toddlers and all their belongings, it turned out to be smaller than we had anticipated. Additionally, the maintenance and repair costs for this vehicle are quite high, with a single tire replacement costing $200! We've also experienced some reliability issues with the electrical system. As a result, we're already considering trading it in for a different vehicle...

Vehicle year: 2005
The V50 model from 2005 has some issues with power and acceleration, which can be frustrating for drivers. Despite efforts to address these issues, they have persisted for over two years. In addition, there are some concerns with the horn, keys, and visibility. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be managed and the car can still provide reliable transportation.

We have owned 5 previous Volvo wagons going back to 1971, but unfortunately, this vehicle doesn't compete. There are a few issues we have encountered, such as the 'no key system' having a small cap for the driver's door lock which has fallen off on its own 3 times, costing $90.00 each time to order, have painted, etc. Additionally, the front airfoil/dam is too low, which causes it to rub on curbs and frequently become scratched/damaged, costing $650.00+ to replace. The rear roof tapers down so much that load capacity is severely limited, even for large dogs who may bump their heads on entry. However, the mileage is about 20 and the manual supports the use of 87 Octane and up. We hope that Volvo will address these issues in the future to improve their vehicles.
