The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.

The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.

The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.

The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common Volvo S40 problems

The Volvo S40 is a popular car known for its luxury and solid motoring. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems and issues. This article will discuss some of the most common problems with the Volvo S40, based on complaints from owners of this car.

  • Rotten Egg Smell: A smell of rotten eggs inside the car is often due to a catalytic converter failure. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty part, which can be costly but may also yield some cash from selling the damaged catalytic converter.
  • Long Braking Distance: The S40 is known for its long braking distance, which is often due to worn-out brake rotors. Replacing the brake rotors is the only solution to this problem.
  • Leaking Sunroof: Water leaking into the cabin through the sunroof is a common issue with the Volvo S40. This problem is typically caused by blocked drainage channels, which can be fixed by cleaning the top of the car to unblock those channels.
  • Creaking Seats: The front seats of the S40 are prone to creaking, which is often mistakenly attributed to loose runners. The real issue is internal damage to the seats, which can only be resolved by replacing them with newer ones.
  • Wobbly Key: The plastic electronic ignition key of the S40 can feel loose or wobbly in the slot, indicating a problem with the key or the slot. Both parts are expensive to replace, so it is crucial to address this issue as soon as possible.
  • Instrument Panel Failure: The instrument panel of the S40 can fail, often due to a poor connection between the information display and the ECU. Refitting the connection should resolve the issue.
  • Poor Starting/Loss of Power: The S40 can experience poor starting and loss of power during driving due to a clogged MAF (mass air flow) sensor. Cleaning the sensor with some MAF sensor cleaner should resolve the issue.
  • Headlight Switch Failure: The headlight switch on earlier models of the S40 is prone to failing, which can be resolved by replacing the switch.
  • Cracked Suspension Spring: If the car looks lopsided or feels like it's leaning one way or the other during a test drive, the problem is most likely a cracked suspension spring, which can be resolved by replacing the spring.

In conclusion, while the Volvo S40 is a great car, it is not without its problems. Owners of this car should be aware of these common issues and address them as soon as possible to avoid further damage and costly repairs.

As of 10/21 I went to a Mechanic Shop called Pegoraro and ran a full auto diagnostic on the vehicle. With repairs on the vehicle costing $12,433.03 which involve fixes to the Timing Belt, Cooling System Fluid Exchange, Drive Belt Tensioner/Idle Assembly, Automatic Transmission Assembly, Remove and Install, Brake Fluid Exchange, and Lastly Disc Brake Pads, Rotors and Calipers (Rear). Obviously the vehicle isn't in "perfect condition". After getting this diagnostic I was informed that the vehicles Odometer has been tampered with as well as a bunch of other codes have been turned off before I purchased this vehicle. I just want a refund for this vehicle and to take my business elsewhere.

  • Summary: After buying the vehicle on 7/9/21, the car started having problems with the cooling system. I took it to a repair shop and they said the cooling system was overfilled. The air problem continued. I took it back to the dealership who said they fixed it but it continued. I contacted the prior Manufactuer service center who informed me the computer chip was recommended to be replaced when the dealer had it serviced but they declined, causing all the electrical and cooling issues. I called the dealer and they said they had the alarm disconnected also which was why the computer system wasn't working. The alarm system doesn't work and I have had to replace the key fob 3 times. I took it to another repair shop who diagnosed the following as permanent failure codes: 6 CEM codes, 1 ECM code, 6 SRS codes, 2 DIM codes, 11 CEM-HS codes, passenger and driver door codes, 4 climate control codes, 1EPS code, 4 SWM codes, DD11, all of which are safety hazards.

  • Date Complaint: 2021-06-30
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: YV1VS2558YF
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This is to describe airbag injuries. My car performed well. If not for the airbag and good construction of this Volvo I would not be here to ask for your help. I am wondering why we still use explosive materials and a device that causes so many injuries. There has to be another device to absorb the force of impact than an explosive device that injures, maim, and can kill people. I want to send images of my injuries which are extensive. Is this what happens each time the airbags ignite? I was close due to my small stature. The bag hit me in the chest and face. Volvo is a safe car. I was traveling at 55mph, a woman stopped her car in the passing lane feet in front of me, everyone was doing 55 mph and more. There was nowhere to go to escape the impact. Frederick, MD Hwy 15 South at 7th Street has many oncoming ramps, there needs to be warning about oncoming and stopped vehicles. The speed limit is 65mph before these fast-moving on-ramps. A flashing light would also help.

Latest negative Volvo S40 car reviews

  1. Dayton Rodriguez 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2007

We have owned this car for 3 years. It comes from a 1-Owner, well-maintained family. Although we do not service it at the dealer, we have it maintained locally by a skilled technician or mechanic. In the 3 years we have owned it, we have invested well over double what we paid for the car ($5000). We have replaced the motor mount, spark plugs, coil packs, gas cap, headliner, front outlet, headlights, interior door panels, high mounted brake light, and many more items. This car is incredibly safe, has a fantastic A/C and Heat system, and the sound system is amazing. While its gas mileage is not impressive, and it requires some effort to run at highway speeds, it is a car that keeps you on your toes. If you are looking for a car that will be your best friend with the dealer and autopart stores, and potentially even save your marriage, then this car is definitely worth considering!

  2. Brock Wintheiser 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2001

I'll be honest, driving this car can be enjoyable when everything is working properly. However, it seems that the check engine light is always on and parts can be quite expensive. Additionally, diagnosing issues can be a challenge due to the temperamental sensors. I did experience some bucking when I used non-Volvo plugs, but overall the car runs well. The climate controls can be a bit finicky, but they do work most of the time.

  3. Cade Larkin 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2006

I have a 2006 s40 2.4i Volvo. Although it has a nice look, I have had some issues with it. We bought it used with about 125,000 miles on it from a reliable dealer who had very good reviews. At first, the car was great - it handled well, was comfortable and had a nice interior. However, after a few weeks, I experienced some problems. Firstly, the fuel pump broke while I was on the highway, which was quite inconvenient. Although it cost around $1,000 to fix and I was without my car for about a week, the issue was resolved. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks later, some type of fuel gauge broke, causing the CE light to come on. This cost around $600 to fix. Recently, the battery and starter broke at the same time, which is frustrating. Although I'm not sure how much it will cost to fix, I won't be able to drive it for about a week, maybe two. Overall, it has been a bit unreliable, but I'm hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.

  4. Arno West 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

Back in college, we purchased a 2.5T with 75k miles from a friend at a dealership for a good deal. It drove fine until we hit about 110k miles, and then it required one repair after another. Although my wife has a sentimental attachment to the car, I would get rid of it tomorrow if I could. It is a mediocre car that calls itself luxury, with decent power, interior, and handling, but poor brakes and outdated infotainment even for the time. There is nothing great about the car. Over the past year, we have easily spent $5000 on non-routine repairs and have experienced several breakdowns. One of the breakdowns was due to a software update that the dealer never notified us of. If you are looking for a luxury car, spend a few grand extra for a BMW or Audi. If you want a reliable car that has everything the Volvos do minus a little power, get a Honda or Toyota. I will never purchase another Volvo. Additionally, the car offers mediocre MPG for the power it provides.

  5. Rickie Stracke 2025-02-05

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car may not have a lot of zip, but it does have a noticeable vibration throughout the car that can be felt through the gas pedal. Additionally, due to its small wheels and size, the ride can be quite bumpy and you may feel every bump in the road. Unfortunately, the brake pads only last 15k miles, and the dealer acknowledges that this was a design flaw. However, they do not offer a price break to replace them.

Latest positive Volvo S40 car reviews

  1. Giles Raynor 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2007

I've been driving the car for around 3 months now and I must say, I'm quite satisfied with it. It took me a while to decide between an Audi A4, BMW 325xi and the S40, but I ultimately went with the Volvo. After considering factors such as cost, performance, and reliability, the Volvo seemed to be the best choice. The car has been working flawlessly until last week when I encountered 2 fault codes: #4 injector failure and evaporative canister purge. I'm hoping that the dealership service will live up to its reputation. The only downside I've noticed so far is the poor fuel economy, even with 91 octane. It's only getting 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. Nonetheless, I'm still optimistic at this point.

  2. Madyson Ward 2025-02-20

Hi there! The car has been driven for 188,000 miles and has had the AC replaced twice, as well as the struts once. All other regular maintenance has been done, including brakes.

The back seats can be folded flat, providing ample space in the back! My two big German Shepherds absolutely love riding in the back, although the windows are not drool-proof. The paint still looks gorgeous even after being parked outside for 10 years. The 5-cylinder engine provides great acceleration, more than enough for my needs, and it feels like a turbo without actually being one. The car is large and comfortable for someone who is 5'8

I still enjoy my car even after 5 years, but I am excited for my next vehicle which will not be a Volvo. While I have experienced some issues since purchasing, such as the key fob not working (I have had to replace it 4 times), the car being towed 4 times due to the engine immobilizer not disengaging, lights falling out of the side mirrors, and various parts being replaced, I have found the experience to be a learning opportunity. There have been some frustrating aspects, such as blind spots and the inability to rotate the wheels, but I have found ways to manage these issues. Despite these challenges, I have enjoyed my time with the car and appreciate the memories it has provided me.

I got the car early this year and the first thing I noticed was the torque. I absolutely love the strength of the car and its powerful engine. The gearbox is also great, and while the drive can be a bit hard, it just makes it more sporty. I'm really happy I bought it, and it handles corners well for a front-wheel drive car. The motor makes an amazing sound that I just love to bits!
