Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

- Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
- Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
- Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
- Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
- Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
- Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.
While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Vehicle year: 2024
Update as of 8/24/22: I am still thoroughly impressed with the XC90. It is an absolute pleasure to drive and incredibly comfortable. We are approaching our first oil change, and it will be the first time we have had to take our Volvo back to the dealer since we drove it off the lot. I have never owned a new vehicle that did not have to go back to the dealer to resolve an issue within the first six months, so this is a testament to the great quality, craftsmanship, and reliability of the XC90. The only minor issues I have are the center console storage being less than generous and the lack of cupholders. We traded in our XC60 with 24,000 miles and essentially got what we paid for it new in 2018. We used the money to purchase an XC90 because it has a more spacious cabin for our family. I knew I wanted the T6 engine with AWD in our XC90, having had some experience with Volvos. The T5 in our XC60 lacked some oomph, but the T6 is incredibly powerful for a 2.0 four-cylinder. I also enjoy the slight supercharger whine. We ended up with a Momentum package with T6 AWD, blond interior in Crystal White with 21

We recently upgraded our car from a 2007 xc90 to a 2017 model and we couldn't be happier with all the new features and added conveniences. Despite the luxurious upgrades, it still has all the aspects we loved in the previous model. We are thrilled with our purchase!

We bought the Volvo XC90 back in November 2009 to downsize and improve fuel economy, replacing our 2004 Ford Expedition. The vehicle boasts excellent interior and exterior quality and styling, with the leather seats being the most comfortable I have ever experienced. The car is exceptionally quiet and drives very smoothly at cruising speeds. However, the acceleration is a little jerky from start to about 30 mph, which is noticeable as the automatic transmission shifts gears. I think the 6 cyl standard engine is a little undersized for this vehicle, and the gas mileage is disappointing, averaging 20 MPG (17 MPG city).

This car is not only comfortable, but also beautiful, spacious, and modern. It is packed with so much technology that I am still learning about. The team at White Plains Volvo were incredibly helpful in getting me started and were great to work with. It has ALL the safety features you could imagine and more, including Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Pilot Assist, 360 View Camera (if you want it), HUD (Heads Up Display, which I don’t have), Remote Start and climate control directly from your Volvo phone app, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Volvo apps such as weather, Glympse (I think), Google Search, Spotify, Pandora, Navigation, WiFi with AT&T, Sirius XM Radio, Digital Driver Information Display, Parking Sensors, and more. I leased the Momentum, which is not the most expensive option, and it even includes Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance. This covers the first three services (10,000 miles, 20,000 miles and 30,000 miles) at no charge. Overall, I absolutely love my Volvo and only have minor concerns about reliability. Plus, I paid approximately $51,000 after the rebates and discounts, which is a great deal. :)

We have owned both the XC90 and S60 and unfortunately, we have experienced some frustrating issues with both vehicles. Over the past two years, we have had to repair or replace numerous parts and sensors that seem trivial to have to fix in such an early life of a vehicle. For example, we had to replace the ignition switch and the right and left side of the seat panel due to plastic cracking. Additionally, the sunroof leaked. While these issues are frustrating, we remain hopeful that Volvo will take our concerns seriously and work to improve their vehicles. We have reached out to Volvo to share our concerns and are currently awaiting a response. We appreciate your understanding and hope to see improvements in the future.

Volvo XC90 2003 is not a reliable car and poses a safety risk to drive. The engines are not compatible with the transmissions, which has resulted in frequent breakdowns and the need for multiple repairs. Despite spending almost $12,000 on repairs, the car continues to break down and has become a safety concern. The service center at local Volvo dealerships is full of cars needing repairs, including ours. It is not recommended to purchase this car.

I purchased a fully loaded XC90 T8 after seeing it at the auto show, primarily because of the 7 seats, safety features, and luxurious interior. Although I love the Auto Pilot, touch screen, and Bowers & Wilkins audio, I have unfortunately experienced multiple issues with the car. Despite Volvo's good customer service in providing courtesy cars, my XC90 has been in the service department for a total of 28 days in the past 2 months. The brakes require more force than other cars, and I have experienced multiple service appointments due to various issues such as the air suspension and rear transmission. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase the XC90 T8 and look forward to resolving these issues with Volvo's support.Consumer Reports' rating of Volvo's reliability was not something I wanted to believe, but unfortunately, my experience has confirmed their assessment. Despite purchasing their top-of-the-line, fully loaded model, I have encountered more issues with this vehicle than any other I have owned. It is disappointing to see such a renowned brand fall short in this area. After spending over $41K and driving the car for 24 months, I can confidently say that this has been my worst car purchase to date.

I bought a car with 68k miles and unfortunately found out that the front axles needed to be replaced. Although I have driven 143k miles since then, I still haven't replaced them. However, I did have to replace two wheel bearings this year. The park assist went out and I had it repaired, but unfortunately, the alarm would come on solid when backing and nothing was close by. While on the interstate, the serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pull went out, making it difficult to steer, but I was able to get it to the dealership. About 5 months later, the rear assembly bearings failed, which was quite costly to repair. There were also some minor issues, such as the hinge on the center console breaking. Perhaps it was my mistake to buy a car with high mileage, but I had expected more from Volvo.

Many blogs have reported that transmission failure is a widespread issue, and what's even more surprising is the repeat replacement issue. It seems that Volvo has not yet addressed this issue publicly, nor have they made any design or manufacturing changes, even for their new models. While there have been no fatalities linked to this issue, I believe that it's only a matter of time before something happens. It's disappointing that a luxury car manufacturer like Volvo has not taken a more proactive stance on this, and I understand that dealing with dealers can be difficult.
