Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
  • Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  • Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
  • Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
  • Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
  • Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.

While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

Latest negative Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Saul Reilly 2025-08-23

    Vehicle year: 2022

If you're willing to recognize that 5 star reviews tend to be emotional and overhyped, you can then focus on objective feedback. This luxury SUV is very nice, made with lots of attention to detail and perfection, especially with the inscription package. The soft leather is great, and the handling is excellent. The power train is very clever and surprisingly spacious in the 2nd row, although the 3rd row is for kids only. The car is very 'soft footed' - it seems to want to roll down the road with a very sensitive, yet smooth power train. The AWD handles very well, on par with other performance cars. The MPGs are not bad for the weight of the car and the fact that there are 316 horses under the hood. It is worth noting that the insurance rates for this car are decent, at least as of July 2022. Now, with the praises aside, there are some areas where the car could be improved. For example, Volvo in all their wisdom does not allow you to start your car remotely unless you pay for their smartphone app. A 20K Honda allows you to precool or preheat your car, but Volvo will want you to pay extra to do the same. Additionally, the car software is far from smart. It does not store your driving profile (eco, dynamic, etc.) and resets it on every start, even though it manages to store every other aspect of your settings. It is bloated with garbage values that are tied to subscription such as weather etc that comes from Sirius XM. If you don't care to renew the subscription, you'll be left with many display items on the main screen that don't do much. Lastly, the car does not come with a printed manual. The online manual is a joke, and who the heck has the time to sit and try to figure out the manual uploaded into the center console? There is no such thing as a PDF you can print or use to learn about your car's features. You can order one for 55 bucks, but they seem to be 'out of stock for a while'. For a 70K car to not come with a manual -- that's a joke, it has to be.Last time I checked, even the most basic cars come with a printed reference manual, especially since there are many features on the car. Unfortunately, the online support from Volvo for this car is extremely disorganized. It can be difficult to determine which features and support apply to your car, as there is a division between 'early' and 'late' 2022 models. However, the website shows completely different configurations for the 2022 model than what you will find on the lot. Additionally, the 360 camera and rear view camera always start in the same view, which can be frustrating for parking assistance. The FOBs button placement is also baffling and can be difficult to operate. The lane keeping 'pilot' can put your car too close to the left lane for comfort, making it a less useful feature. The sunroof switch controls both the shade and the sunroof, which can be a bit primitive and confusing. Furthermore, the car only allows for two profiles, which can be inconvenient for families with multiple drivers. Lastly, storage space for small items like sunglasses and coins is limited. Despite these issues, we hope you enjoy your Volvo experience! This car does not have any coin slots due to the national coin shortage. Additionally, the steering wheel tilt and telescoping feature is manual and will not be stored with your driver profile. If you're test driving the car, it's important to pay attention to the road and wind noise. Volvo is transitioning to an electric company, which may affect parts availability for their gas models in the future. If you're considering a gas model, it's worth considering the direction of the company and how it may impact your resale or maintenance costs. While the resale value of this car is mediocre, it's important to keep in mind that this is true for most cars in this class. During your test drive, pay attention to these factors and decide if they will impact your overall satisfaction with the car. While I personally don't feel that the value is quite there, it's ultimately up to you to decide if this car is the right fit for your needs.

Our 2005 Volvo XC90 V8 experienced a catastrophic engine failure last week while crossing an intersection. Despite having undergone every Volvo dealer service, including one just 45 days ago, the engine failed due to a broken timing chain, a known issue that has caused numerous catastrophic failures. The dealer confirmed that the car required a new engine, which costs $15,000. It is disappointing that Volvo has not yet undertaken a recall to address this issue. However, we are confident in our decision to replace the engine and continue to enjoy our Volvo XC90 V8.

I absolutely adore my new Volvo XC90! It's a stunning car both inside and out, with a plethora of fantastic safety features that make driving an absolute pleasure. However, I have experienced some software issues, and most recently, the battery has been draining for no apparent reason when the car is not in use. Unfortunately, each time I have taken it to the shop, it has taken 2-3 days to fix, as the technicians are not fully up to speed and the software can be quite complicated. They usually have to consult with Volvo engineers remotely. As I write this, I am about to jump-start the car to take it back to the shop again, just a month after the last battery episode (they did a battery reset and then installed a new battery last time, but never did find the cause). If you do a Google search, you will find that many other people have experienced the same problem. Another issue I have encountered is the quirky navigation system, which is usually reliable but occasionally messes up the destination city. Therefore, my recommendation would be to hold off on purchasing this car for now. Perhaps wait a year until Volvo has had a chance to iron out these issues.

This vehicle has unfortunately experienced multiple issues over the past 5 weeks, with several sensors malfunctioning, including the gas pedal sensor which failed while I was pulling out into traffic. Despite having to replace the tires and brakes at relatively low mileage, Volvo has stated that this is normal wear and tear. Although I have had to make several trips to the dealership for repairs, I appreciate Volvo's willingness to offer assistance in obtaining a new vehicle. However, I am hesitant to purchase another XC 90 as the issues with this particular vehicle have been concerning.

This is my second Volvo that I have owned, the other being a Turbo S80. Although both required frequent servicing, I found the S80 to be quite costly after the warranty period. I was happy that I did not purchase the extended warranty because most of the problems were not covered or I used up the time before reaching the mileage. Unfortunately, I have recently found the service in Houston to be less user-friendly than it was in St. Louis. However, I must say that the service in St. Louis was quite user-friendly despite the frequent servicing. The XC90 has had some service problems, including the transmission needing replacement, the Turbo needing service, and multiple small electronic issues. I guess the Swedes haven't quite mastered computers yet. With only 28K, I am now looking for a new vehicle!

After testing many SUVs, I can confidently say that the Volvo XC90 is a top choice for those who prioritize safety, comfort, and ease of use. Its spacious design allows for ample passenger and cargo room, and its safety features are unmatched by other SUVs on the market. Plus, its large sedan platform provides the best of both worlds: the advantages of an SUV with the smooth ride of a luxury sedan.

We absolutely adore our XC90 T6 R-Design! It's been two months since we got it, and my wife and I always have to decide who gets to drive it. The ride is incredibly smooth, and the engine (with Polestar) delivers outstanding power and torque. Even without Polestar, the power and torque are impressive. We're still getting the hang of all the technology, but with daily use, it's easy to learn. We recommend reading the owner's manual, especially for features that aren't immediately intuitive (like the automatic car wash). Our vehicle is equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system (which is worth every penny, even though it's a bit pricey) and four-corner air suspension (which we absolutely love). The only thing we wish it had was a CD drive (we're a bit old school), but we discovered that you can buy a Volvo CD player as an accessory.

We recently purchased the XC90 T8 6 Seat Inscription and I must say, Volvo has truly outdone themselves with this one. The design of the interior is a significant improvement from the previous model, giving it a luxurious feel. The seats are incredibly comfortable, the leather is supple, and the inlays and trim are elegant. The shift knob made of Swedish Crystal is a nice touch. In my opinion, the exterior styling is at the top of its class, not too rounded off or too boxy. The refreshed grill looks elegant without being too gaudy, unlike some other manufacturers. The pure electric mode is perfect for short trips, giving me a range of over 20 miles. However, acceleration is a bit sluggish in pure electric mode. But, when in hybrid mode, it is remarkably quick. The primary reason for purchasing this car was to keep my family safe. The independent crash tests by IIHS prove that the XC90 is safer than its competitors like BMW or Audi. Volvo has also released a marketing video showcasing the engineering that went into making this the safest SUV on the road. I have owned Audi's, BMW's, and Lexus vehicles, but this is hands down the best car I have ever owned. It perfectly balances styling, eco-driving, and comfort without sacrificing safety. The only downside I have noticed is that the passenger cup holders in the six-seat configuration seem like an afterthought and may be broken by my kids. However, this should not deter anyone from seriously considering the 2020 XC90.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I picked up the car at the beginning of July and it's been a joy to drive ever since. The XC90 is a fantastic vehicle with its 6 cylinder engine, and the 7 seat capability is perfect for anyone who leads an active lifestyle. Overall, it's been a very premium experience.

I looked at many SUV models from 2008-2010, but I knew from the start that I wanted a Volvo. After careful consideration, I found that it was the perfect fit for me and I absolutely love everything about it. The gas mileage is excellent for an SUV and the interior is top-notch, with no major blind spots like other SUVs in its class. Additionally, the price is much better than other luxury SUVs. I opted for the base model, which includes leather seats and a sunroof - two features that were very important to me. Despite being a V6, it has a lot of power and great brakes. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great SUV.
