Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
  • Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  • Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
  • Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
  • Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
  • Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.

While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

Latest negative Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Alf Windler 2025-09-13

    Vehicle year: 2017

The Volvo is an excellent vehicle, a true masterpiece, especially when fully loaded with all the options, best trim and engine. However, the ride can be extremely bumpy, even with air suspension and 20” rims. I was hoping that this configuration would remedy or at least lessen the impact on bumpy roads, but unfortunately, it did not. Volvo needs to work on improving their strut suspension to preserve the beauty of this car. Additionally, they could work on improving the gas mileage.

  2. Dashawn Kassulke 2025-09-12

    Vehicle year: 2018

Our experience with this vehicle has been extremely disappointing. The navigation system and voice response are not up to par, with the system often misunderstanding requests. Additionally, we have experienced issues with the air conditioning and gas pump, which have been frustrating to deal with. Despite our hopes for a safe and user-friendly SUV, this purchase has been a nightmare. We have had to take it to the shop four times in just seven months. We strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle.

  3. Ezra Turcotte 2025-09-12

    Vehicle year: 2021

Our NEW Volvo XC 90 has been in for service 5 times since purchased. So far everything has been an electrical problem...AC won’t turn on, screen goes blank, blinkers out, brights won’t work, mirrors won’t adjust, phone calls out and rings and you can’t cut it off, AC won’t turn on...worth mentioning twice when you live in Texas. Twice, these things have gone wrong right before a road trip, being the main reason we bought it. My list is extensive. Very inconvenient! They do resolve the problem each time but this is not what we expected with a luxury brand new vehicle. We contacted Volvo USA but they are unwilling to help in anyway. This is our fourth Volvo, never before have we experienced such issues. Customer service??

  4. Adolphus Jacobson 2025-09-09

    Vehicle year: 2009

I bought an XC90 because of its appearance, tall trunk space, and clearance, which are features that many modern SUVs compromise on. While the vehicle is not particularly special, it is still a decent choice. The interior quality is not the best, as the leather wears easily and the trims fade quickly. However, the car drives fine, and although it is heavy, the safety features are top-notch. The acceleration and fuel economy could be better, and the car does get stuck in snow easily, which defeats the purpose of having ground clearance. Additionally, the transmission has some sloppy shifting, and there are a few rattles when driving on the highway. Despite these drawbacks, the car does have ample cargo space, which is a plus.

I bought this car mainly because of its price compared to its competitors. With the included 5 years of service, it's unbeatable. This particular model came with every option, including BLIS, Xenon, DVD's, Navigation, and more. However, I found the Navigation system to be a bit difficult to use and would probably skip it if I had to do it again. Despite this, the car still meets our needs and is rated as 'just good enough'. It's worth noting that this is the only car I own that still uses a traditional key instead of a proximity token with push button start.

I recently took delivery of a 2021 T6 AWD Momentum on 2/13/21, as my current SUV lease for a 2017 Infiniti QX60 was ending. With three kids, a three-row SUV is a necessity for me. I've always been a fan of Honda, Nissan, and Infiniti, but I had grown bored of the QX60 over the last 15 months. Compared to what other brands offer, it felt like it was from another decade. The CVT bored me, and I started to dislike it. The infotainment system never improved, and even the 2020 model lacked Apple CarPlay. I know the 2022 model launching at the end of 2021 looks nice and has no CVT, but I needed to lease another SUV no later than March 2021. I shopped around, but due to the pandemic and the hot SUV market, dealers were trying to sell SUVs that were in the production line or on the way to the dealers. Because of supply and demand, I had little room to negotiate with dealers, even with my tier 1 credit. I looked at the Telluride, Palisade, 2022 MDX, Honda Pilot, and Aviator, but all were either very limited or had high lease payments. Many of these required packages in order for me to get what I wanted on my next SUV. Miami is a tough car market, as those in Miami know. The XC90 was always in the back of my mind. Upon going to Bomnin Volvo Dadeland (I went because of their 5-star Google rating), I test drove a T5 and T6. I definitely wanted the T6 and was able to work out a good lease with little out of pocket. I ordered one on the spot, and it took two weeks to get to the dealer. Originally, I ordered a white metallic with black interior and the base sound system. However, after joining this forum and reading about how bad that system was, I didn't want to regret it. So, I asked my sales guy if I could listen to both (base vs. HK), and I was immediately sold on the HK. My wife even agreed that the HK was the way to go. The base system? No thanks. Luckily, they had a black metallic with black interior and HK on it, along with a protection package, etc. I was able to swap to that one. Mind you, my second color choice was black. We were able to negotiate an additional $17 per month thanks to the HK and extra package. It's a done deal! I have to say, I absolutely love this car. I never thought I would own a Volvo, but I'm so glad I do. The technology is amazing - from the infotainment system to the digital dash and Apple CarPlay. The standard safety features are also fantastic. The car drives so smoothly and the engine power is plentiful. The sound system, especially the HK sound system, is awesome. As a Nissan Infiniti guy, I was always a fan of their Bose systems, but this one sounds even better. I love that with Volvo, I was able to get AWD, super/turbo charged engine, 20” rims, panoramic sunroof, amazing safety features, Apple CarPlay, upgraded sound system, better infotainment, and great looks. I truly believe that as a luxury brand, Volvo is worth every penny. I'm so happy that my SUV shopping is finally over and that I took this one home!

As a car enthusiast and engineer working in the auto industry (although not for Volvo directly), I recently purchased a 2021 S60 and was so impressed that I also got an XC90 T5 for my wife. Over the past 30 years, we have owned various brands including Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, VW, BMW, and Cadillac, and have had no complaints about any of them. However, the history of Volvo's engines led me to choose the T5 trim for both our S60 and XC90. While there were some issues with premature engine rebuilds due to excessive oil burning in the early T5 engines from 2015-2018, these issues have been addressed with new piston rings and the new T5/T6 engines are usually flawless (except for some premature supercharger failures on the T6). I prefer the T5 (2023 mild hybrid and called B5) because it is a simpler engine design that has been in production for about 10 years now. Neither of our Volvos consume any appreciable amount of oil between oil changes. The T5 feels peppy enough as long as you're not driving a loaded car all the time. Due to the numerous issues with the Recharge (T8), I recommend avoiding it. The ride in the XC90 is great with no appreciable wind noise. It is solid and definitely the most solid car we have ever owned. The S60 is also very sturdy, just like the XC90. There are a ton of engineering safety features in the car that are very unique and advantageous, but I won't go into detail here. Suffice it to say that these features were a major factor in my decision to buy my first Volvo. We usually keep cars for many years and so far it looks like these Volvos will be no exception. We have had no issues at all, just oil changes. Again, the trim level matters. The Recharge is a very complex car with new technology that works well but is not reliable. This applies to any other premium plug-in hybrid.Just be prepared to handle those issues and don't expect a vehicle with so much software and electronics to be as reliable as a pure gas car. I must say, the build quality is amazing. If you're a car enthusiast and work on them, you'll immediately notice that with Volvos. When you look under the car, it's a work of art. The organization of the components and quality of the build is second to none. The extensive use of aluminum is another indication that this car is definitely a premium vehicle.

Hi there! We had an amazing trip driving the Volvo XC90 from Goteberg, Sweden to Oslo, Lillehammer, Balestrand, Karlstad, Stockholm, and Kalmar. The V8 engine made climbing the mountains a breeze, and we were impressed by how well it handled the altitude. We covered 1700 miles in just ten days, and the only challenge we faced was finding a parking spot in an Oslo underground garage meant for smaller European vehicles. Despite the mountain and city driving, we still managed to get an excellent mileage of 23.8 mpg. It's worth noting that the minimum octane in Norway/Sweden was 95. As someone who has been a Honda/Acura owner for 30 years and has even test driven a new MDX recently, I can confidently say that the Volvo XC90 is the ultimate car. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I've been driving my XC90 for just over a year now and I have to say, it's the best vehicle I've ever owned! Of course, there are some small drawbacks, like the driver seat starting to feel a bit worn on the outer bolster, but overall it handles great for its size. I've even taken it on the autobahn in Germany and it performed amazingly at high speeds. While the 6-speed tip-tronic changes can be a bit slushy during gear changes, I still think it's a better vehicle than my co-workers' Touareg and LR3. The only downside is that some of the options can be a bit pricey, like the navigation system which costs over $3k. But, I found a great aftermarket system for less than $600! It's definitely worth paying quality money for a quality SUV.

I bought this car mainly for work and trips to Florida. It has been a great car so far, with plenty of get-up-and-go. The spacious interior and driver comforts were exactly what I was looking for. Even after putting 60K miles on it, I still really like this car. Although there were a few maintenance issues that I took care of myself, most people would have taken it to a shop (such as struts, brakes, timing belt, and plugs/coil packs). I frequently take it on long trips, and it is very reliable and a pleasure to drive. It also performs very well in snow.
