Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
- Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
- Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
- Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
- Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
- Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.
While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

Vehicle year: 2023
The XC 90 Inscription had all the features we were looking for and more, without the outward appearance of high-end luxury. It's just a Volvo, not a Mercedes or BMW! Comfort was our first consideration, and the driving experience, visibility, heads-up display, and lane-keeping make longer drives a breeze. The seats in the car are amazing, and both the driver and passenger have the same control features, which is rare and a must! The interior quality is first-rate, with leather and wood, and the Harman Kardon stereo is superb. The car is equipped with every safety feature currently available and more. Recently, when the car detected a quick stop, the seatbelts retracted with modest force, pulling us back into the seats. It was a safety surprise! It's a big car that drives effortlessly, just like a midsize, but it's truly peppy. We were quite lucky connecting with Valenti Volvo of Watertown, CT. They were the only dealer that charged only $500 over invoice, not over list, but over invoice. All other dealers we visited (Kia, Ford, Subaru, etc.) were charging over list (with $5-10K typical), often with lengthy waits for a car that might be coming in. As promised, our car was delivered on Christmas Eve 2021, and they even provided a big red bow (like on TV). They were fantastic to work with. Long ago, we had a Volvo station wagon. This is not your granddad's Volvo! So far, so good. We are very happy with our

This is fantastic news! I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get the exact same vehicle that you've been driving for the past 40 years. Volvo really deserves a round of applause for creating such a safe, efficient, and quiet car that also has all the amenities you need. It's great to see that you're enjoying your new ride!

As a long-time Volvo owner, I recently traded in my wife's Mercedes E350 for the 2019 T6 Inscription. I must say, the engine is quite powerful despite being a 4-cylinder. While it may not sound as impressive as other engines, it certainly gets the job done. The infotainment system, or as I like to call it, the Volvo iPad, has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze to use. If you're comfortable using a smartphone, you'll have no trouble with this system. The car is incredibly quiet, which is great for relaxing drives. The Nappa leather Volvo seats are luxurious and the best I've ever experienced. The XC90 has a peaceful yet accurate driving experience, which I find very enjoyable. I highly recommend getting the Air Suspension to smooth out the ride, especially on American roads. The car has all the tech you could need and more, with great visibility. Overall, I highly recommend adding the XC90 to your list of cars to test drive.

The SUV looks and feels great. It drives very nicely and the interior is gorgeous, especially the R-Design. However, there are some features that I was surprised to find missing in the Xc90. For instance, remote start on the key fob is not available as a standard feature, which is a shame. Although you can start it via the phone, it is not as convenient. Additionally, the warning light for low tire pressure is not as helpful as having the actual tire pressure displayed, which can help you make safer decisions. While the pilot assist and technology are not as user-friendly as those in the VW Atlas or our Jeep, we still like the Xc90 a lot. However, we are glad that we leased it instead of buying it. If we had to choose again, we would probably go for the Atlas SEL Premium or maybe the MDX, which are more usable and almost as good to drive. Although the interior materials may not be as luxurious, the $20k savings would certainly be worth it.

Vehicle year: 2011
Hello! I just wanted to share my thoughts on the 2011 model. I recently purchased one and I must say, I absolutely love it! I can't seem to find anything to criticize about the car. I believe that every option was worth the price and the Volvo drives rock steady on the road. The engine is more than adequate and I had some concerns about the 6 cylinder, but it does the job perfectly. So far, I'm averaging 20MPG in mixed driving and I think that will increase with highway driving. I'm also happy to report that Bluetooth is now built in and works superbly. The radio/telephone controls are mixed together and can be a little overwhelming at first, but they work as designed. Lastly, the seats are very comfortable and I love the R-Design color scheme. I hope this review helps anyone who is considering purchasing this car. Thank you for reading!

I've owned this car for over 10 years and have put 90,000 miles on it. It started as our primary car for transporting our two kids, but now it serves as our third car for 'dirty work'. While we've had some issues with failed wheel bearings, sway bars, and ignition coils, we've been fortunate to avoid any engine or transmission problems. Despite the maintenance costs, we've kept this car because of its versatility in hauling people and stuff. It's always started and never broken down, which is a testament to its reliability. And let's not forget about the Swedes - they really know how to make safe cars that can handle snow! Even after 10 years, it still looks modern and stylish.

Vehicle year: 2012
I recently purchased a used 2010 XC90 with 100k miles on it. Although the front leather seats were worn out with cracking and fading, the car was still in good condition. Here are some observations I made about the car at this age: 1. The gas mileage is actually decent for an old, heavy SUV. I am getting 19/20 with the standard V6. 2. The oil level sensor is very sensitive, so I usually put a full 8 quarts in, even though 7.8 quarts is recommended. It burns oil very slowly, so the light will come on mid-oil change, even though it's still in the dipstick range. I usually go ahead and top it off with another half a quart. 3. There's a weird auto fan feature with the AC that the previous owner warned me about. If you leave the AC on when you shut off the car, it tries to circulate air while you're away. The problem is if the car sits for several days this way, you'll kill the battery. You have to remember to shut off the AC when the car is parked for a while. And, since the battery is in the back of the car, you'll have to crawl in from the front to change it if there's not enough power to unlock the tailgate. 5. A few items like seatbelt latches and keyless entry have not stood well with the test of time. It's best to double-check those locks before you walk off trusting that all 4 doors are actually locked. 6. Mechanically, the car is great for 10 years old. There are no leaks anywhere, the engine is clean, and it runs well. I would highly recommend buying one used if you find one with low miles.

I recently purchased a used 2009 Volvo XC90 and unfortunately discovered that there are some major transmission issues with many of their vehicles from around 2008 and earlier. The cost to have it replaced or repaired can be quite high, ranging from $3000 to $7000. I found out that there was even a class action suit on their vehicles with T6 transmissions. Despite these challenges, I am fortunate to have some experience with major repairs and will do my best to get mine fixed. If you search the Volvo transmission forums online, you'll see that this is a widespread issue.

Vehicle year: 2005
After careful consideration, I decided to purchase a used 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 for my family. However, I soon realized that it was not the right choice for me. Despite its good size and visibility, the vehicle did not meet my expectations. The gas mileage was poor and the car required premium fuel, which was expensive. Additionally, the seats ripped and the sunroof leaked during rain and car washes. As the car approached 70k miles, I noticed the transmission slipping. Therefore, I made the confident decision to cut my losses and move on from the vehicle.

Avoid purchasing this car. Despite being brand new from the Ontario dealer, I have encountered numerous issues. Although most were minor, they were still frustrating as my nearest dealer is 1 1/2 hours away and they only offer authorized repairs at a Volvo dealership. Unfortunately, at just 60,000 miles, the transmission and drive shaft require replacement, which will cost $5000+. If the dealer does the repairs, the cost will be $8000. Volvo has not been helpful in resolving this issue. Based on my experience and research, Volvo SUVs have had a lot of major mechanical problems. It is advisable to do your research before purchasing a Volvo SUV to avoid any regrets.
