Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
  • Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  • Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
  • Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
  • Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
  • Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.

While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

Latest negative Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Frederik Schoen 2025-07-13

    Vehicle year: 2014

After owning a minivan for a decade, my family and I decided it was time for a change. We searched for a 7-seater SUV and ultimately chose the XC90. I am writing this review after 6 months of driving and I must say, the XC90 has exceeded our expectations. Although the design may be considered old, it still looks great. The ride is comfortable and the seats are very cozy. I feel extremely secure while driving the XC90. While the engine may not be the most refined and the gas mileage is not great, it is still adequate for a 4700lbs vehicle. Overall, the XC90 is not a fancy or fast SUV, but it is a solidly built vehicle that I would highly recommend.

  2. Levi Dooley 2025-07-13

    Vehicle year: 2012

I purchased my 2012 XC90 with 50,000 miles in December 2014 for $23,000. While I have had some maintenance issues, overall the car has been okay. Unfortunately, I have spent $12,000 on maintenance over the last three years. Some of the major issues I have experienced include the car not starting one morning, which required a tow to the dealership for repair. It took them 7 hours of investigation at $200+ per hour to figure out what was wrong, and I ended up paying $3,000 for the repair, which was not covered by warranty. The issue turned out to be a failing AC fan sensor, which kept the fan running and drained the battery. The AC also broke, which cost $2,000 to fix. This seems to be a common problem with XC90s, as I had the same issue with an earlier model. Additionally, all of the car's engine mounts broke, which cost $1,500 to replace, and I had to spend $1,600 on brake pad and disk replacement. It's worth noting that maintenance costs for Volvos are generally quite high, with every regular maintenance visit costing at least $1,000, and often closer to $1,500. Despite these issues, my XC90 still has a few irritating faults, such as the remote key only working randomly and an irritating bug with the steering wheel radio control that causes the radio to jump into programming mode if you press volume control and then immediately select a channel. While I wouldn't buy a pre-owned Volvo again due to the reliability issues and high maintenance costs, I still appreciate the car for what it is.

  3. Brant Blick 2025-07-04

    Vehicle year: 2014

After looking at a range of cars from the 4 Runner to the Range Rover Sport, we finally settled on the XC90. We are happy to say that it met our expectations. While it may not be the flashiest vehicle, it has an appealing look and a nice interior. Although creature comfort is lacking, we were sold on the relatively decent price for the number of features and the 5 years of free maintenance. We also appreciate the spacious interior and the 3rd row seats, which are nice to have if needed without compromising space. While the 2nd row is a little tighter than some competitors, I, being 6' tall, could still sit there comfortably. This SUV will serve us well for a few years until we find something in this price range that excites us.

During the first 4 months of ownership, there were some issues with the car that caused some stress. The coolant fluid hose was not tightened at the factory, which caused the coolant to leak out. Additionally, the center console was squeaky and made noise with every turn, and the turn signal wires in the wheel well were vibrating, which made for a fun 8-hour drive. However, the center console was fixed after the second and third attempts, and the vibrating turn signal wires were identified and addressed. There was also an issue with the radio, which only played through half of the speakers for 6 hours during an 8-hour trip. Unfortunately, the rear windshield washer leaked and caused some discomfort for our 6-year-old, but we were able to address the issue. Despite these challenges, we are still enjoying our car!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our 4th XC90 in 12 years (we always lease 3yrs at a time). This is also our first model since the major redesign in 2015. Unfortunately, we've had some software issues that have been causing some trouble. For example, we've experienced random battery drainage caused by a software issue (locked out 3 times), constant

I've owned a 2004, 2007, and now a 2010 Volvo XC90, and I must say, my 2010 Executive Model is the best one yet! The interior is outstanding, it feels like I'm sitting in my family room. The handling is tight and feels like a sport car within an SUV. The safety features are a plus when insurance premiums are due. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who appreciates quality, sporty driving, and head-turning styling. It's a perfect vehicle in my book!

I bought this car used in 2006 for my wife and it has been a fantastic family SUV. Despite my wife not being a fan of large vehicles, the XC90 has been an easy adjustment for her as it drives more like a car than a truck or big SUV. The XC90 boasts a comfortable interior, good handling, and a smooth ride. However, it is worth noting that the fuel economy is poor, with only 16mpg in the city and 21mpg on the highway, and the small gas tank means that the range is limited to about 300-350 miles.

Hi there! We had an amazing trip driving the Volvo XC90 from Goteberg, Sweden to Oslo, Lillehammer, Balestrand, Karlstad, Stockholm, and Kalmar. The V8 engine made climbing the mountains a breeze, and we were impressed by how well it handled the altitude. We covered 1700 miles in just ten days, and the only challenge we faced was finding a parking spot in an Oslo underground garage that was designed for smaller European vehicles. Despite the mountain and city driving, we still managed to get an excellent mileage of 23.8 mpg. It's worth noting that the minimum octane in Norway/Sweden was 95. As someone who has been a Honda/Acura owner for 30 years and has even test driven a new MDX recently, I can confidently say that the Volvo XC90 is the ultimate car. Thanks for reading!

I previously owned a 2013 MDX and was overall very happy with it. However, when it came time to look for a new car, I didn't want to get the same MDX and was intrigued by the idea of trying something new. After doing some research and test driving various models such as the Q7, Atlas, X5, RX, and MKT, I stumbled upon the Land Rover Velar and fell in love with its futuristic layout and design. Unfortunately, after spending three weeks with the Velar (two of which were with a loaner), I realized that something was wrong with the car and it wasn't safe for me to continue driving it. Despite the financial loss, I made the hard decision to find a new car. I revisited my list and decided to test drive the Volvo XC90, despite mixed reviews. The dealer was incredibly friendly and accommodating, allowing me to test drive the car for a day. By the end of that day, I had made up my mind and have now been driving my Volvo for two months. I absolutely love it! The safety features are top-notch and actually work very well, making me feel secure on the road. The interior is one of the best in its class and the seating is incredibly comfortable, even in the third row. The exterior is stylish and unique, and the ride is smooth (although it can be a bit bumpy on some roads). I opted for the top trim and have no regrets. Overall, I highly recommend the Volvo XC90 for anyone in the market for a new car.

After proudly owning a 2005 for 3 years and 35,000 miles, I will be switching over to a 2006 S60. After living in a large city for about a year now, I can no longer handle the 12 mpg that the V8 provided me in the city, and the parking. BUT don't get me wrongI drove my car from 67,000 to 96,000 miles. I loved every second of it. It was the SAFEST car on the road. If you don't believe me, check out the Volvo Saved my life club. I am slightly worried that the S60 won't be as safe. I had the Navigation System, TV's and Parking sensors. Never used the TV's but the nav system and parking sensors daily. Two more things I will be without, sadly
