Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
- Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
- Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
- Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
- Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
- Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.
While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

The XC90 has met our expectations. Our three-row vehicle with bucket seats feels very spacious. The performance, including acceleration and handling, has been good, and the gas mileage is not that bad. We found the handling in snow and dirt roads to be solid. The technology features are fantastic. Although we have had a few minor glitches, such as the rear heating also causing the front fan to blow and the blind spot warning not seeming to activate, we still believe that our choice of the XC90 was the right one.

I recently purchased a 2019 T5 with only 6000 miles on it. As a train commuter, I don't drive much, but I needed a luxury SUV that could seat 7 and had a stellar safety reputation. I'm happy to say that my experience as an owner has been nothing short of immaculate. I opted for a special remotely arranged buying experience to avoid the typical haggling and lies at the dealership. Overseas delivery provided me with no-haggle pricing and a preferred buying experience. The seller's communication was excellent and instilled confidence in me. The app is fantastic and allows me to do everything from remote start to monitoring and security. The Swedish ideals of 'lagom' are evident in the simple console design with just 1 screen and 6 buttons. The Sensus system is speedy and fully integrated, enhancing the lovely seats, spacious cabin, panorama sunroof, and superior build quality. The drive experience is great both in the city and on the highway. The 2.0L turbo-charged engine with a 10-speed transmission provides snappy and significant power, and the self-tuning drivetrain adds to the smartness of the vehicle. Overall, it's a superb SUV.

I've driven the XC90 for over 20,000 miles and I still love it! The mileage is consistently over 20 mpg, even on long trips. For example, during my 1,700 mile trip to Norway and Sweden, I got an impressive 23.8 mpg. On my 2,400 mile trip to the Upper Midwest, I got 23.4 mpg, and during my 3,400 mile trip to New England, I got 23.7 mpg. The comfort of this car is unbeatable, and I haven't had a single problem with it - not even one repair trip to the dealer. I plan on keeping this car for a long time to come!

I recently had a bad experience with my 04 Volvo XC90 when the Transmission Service Urgent light came on and the vehicle went into 'limp mode' to prevent further damage. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the support I received from Volvo. Despite reading negative outcomes from other blogs, Volvo covered 100% of my damages, including a new transmission, radiator, and lines. I reached out to Volvo's customer service line and was assigned a friendly and helpful customer care representative. She worked closely with the Volvo dealer and I received a response within just 2 hours, with 100% coverage, including the diagnostic fee. If you ever need to contact Volvo, their customer service line is 1-800-458-1552.

You're an excellent performer! The road handling is also excellent, just as the manufacturer promised. This beast may have deceivingly dreamy-looking headlights, but it really swallows gas when you press for performance. However, I'm not complaining, just making a statement because fuel is cheap here, so the petrol consumption doesn't bother me.

We are thrilled to have just purchased our second XC90, after owning an 06 since Jan 06. Our previous experience was so positive that buying another one was an easy decision, especially with the unbelievable new warranty that includes five years of routine maintenance plus wear & tear items. Not only is it safe and functional, but it's also incredibly fun to drive. The only downsides are the lousy gas mileage and the third row seats, which may not be the most comfortable for anyone older than ten.

When I first saw the XC90, I was so excited that I sent my husband a text with a heart emoji. After a week, my husband found the perfect car with all the bells and whistles. I decided to go with the T5 since I don't drive fast in carpool while waiting for my kids to get out of school. It didn't make sense to spend an extra $10,000. I bought it in February 2019, but unfortunately, it has had several issues. The small activity key failed and died after a month of use, which left us stranded in a parking lot. Luckily, some friends were able to break into our house to find the regular keys and bring them to us. The sunroof also malfunctioned due to a computer sensor issue, which couldn't be fixed until the following week. I had to drive around with a hole in my car, but thankfully, everything turned out okay. The car completely turned off while moving through an intersection, but we were able to restart it and continue. Although the fuel injector broke, they gave me a courtesy car, which was a relief. Most recently, the auxiliary battery died and had to be replaced. While the car may not be the most reliable, I still love it and am grateful for the support I received from the dealership.

Bought a New XC 90 for my Wife because I wanted her in one of the Safest cars on the road. We really liked the car at first, was hoping it would last at least 10 years? Volvo offered oil changes every 10K miles, 4 oil changes given, but I felt it was too long for oil changes, so I decided to change oil myself when the car had 6K miles. First, I made sure that I could get the oil level on the radio screen, I knew something was wrong when I only had one bar left on the scale, then, when I changed the oil, I was missing almost 2 quarts of oil for a 5 quart engine. I was not happy with the car already. The next month, we had " Volvo on call, serviced required" on the dash. Well, I already reset the maintenance light with the oil change, so I took it to the Dealer the next morning, they told me I need to make an appointment, their about 10 days to 2 weeks before they could even look at the car, Really! I asked them if the car had stopped and was told in, could they look at it then? They said still 2 weeks! We only have 1 car. Then, the Sales people said that several customers said they have the same thing on their dash and the Dealer is trying to figure it out? On the way home from the Volvo Dealer, we passed a Hyundai Dealer, and we traded in the Volvo for the Hyundai Palisade, much better SUV. Of course, Volvo's have a Terrible resale value, I knew that when I bought it, also, Geely, the Chinese, owns Volvo, I knew that when I bought the POS. Next day, drove my New Palisade to Volvo dealer to return my Volvo oil filters for refund, I told them about the 2 quarts missing when I did the oil change, and a Mechanic pulled me aside and said that Volvo has BIG PROBLEMS! They are now rebuilding 2016, 2017, 2018 models right now if the owners have maintenance warranties, and he said that mine would have been tag for a rebuilt job on it's First oil change. Pathetic at best, Do Not Buy!

At 68k miles, my Turbo failed and caused significant damage to the engine and supercharger. Despite being warranted for only 50k miles, I decided to repair it at a cost of $12,400. However, I later discovered from an engineer at another facility that this was a design flaw in the XC90. While I cannot confirm the accuracy of this information, I believe that paying such a high amount for a vehicle with less than 70k miles that was properly maintained speaks volumes about its reliability. Additionally, I chose not to repair my catalytic converter for over $1200 since my state (AR) doesn't have emission laws, resulting in the engine light being on all the time. I also experienced issues with my brake pad and auxiliary battery, which I addressed promptly. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to maintain and care for my vehicle.
