Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
  • Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  • Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
  • Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
  • Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
  • Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.

While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

Latest negative Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Merlin Schoen 2025-06-15

    Vehicle year: 2017

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the XC-90 8T. I have noticed that if the car sits for a period of 7 to 8 days, it goes into a sleep mode to protect the batteries. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the car being completely dead with no power available. To start the car, I have had to use the manual key and get a jump start. As an international commercial pilot who goes on long trips frequently, this has been quite inconvenient for me. I have even had to ask my airline's maintenance team for a jump start upon my return, which has caused some teasing from my colleagues. I understand that this issue can be frustrating, especially during inclement weather. While the dealer has been helpful, I am disappointed that Volvo has not provided a solution for this problem. I am currently exploring options under the Lemon laws for my state. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

  2. Jayden Koelpin 2025-06-12

    Vehicle year: 2003

I used to be a true Volvo believer for over 15 years, but unfortunately, my experience with the XC 90 has been disappointing. Despite my love for the brand, this particular model has been the most unreliable and high-maintenance vehicle I have ever owned. With just 60k miles, I have already needed to replace the tires four times and the front-end ball joints. Additionally, the heating and air conditioning system has never worked correctly, and the passenger side front window has broken at least four times. The windshield wiper blades have also flown off the car on multiple occasions. I recently decided to purchase a different brand SUV, even though I still had three months left on my Volvo lease. If you are considering purchasing a 2007 Volvo, I would advise you to beware and consider alternative, less expensive SUVs unless you enjoy visiting dealer service facilities.

  3. Foster Crooks 2025-06-09

    Vehicle year: 2023

I recently purchased a Volvo XC 90 for my wife, as safety was a top priority for us. Initially, we were pleased with the car, but unfortunately, we encountered some issues. Despite Volvo offering oil changes every 10K miles, I felt that was too long and decided to change the oil myself at 6K miles. However, I discovered that the oil level was low and was missing almost 2 quarts of oil for a 5 quart engine. Additionally, we had a

    Vehicle year: 2010

After looking at a range of cars from the 4 Runner to the Range Rover Sport, we finally settled on the XC90. We are happy to say that it met our expectations. While it may not be the flashiest vehicle, it has an appealing look and a nice interior. Although creature comfort is lacking, we were sold on the relatively decent price for the number of features and the 5 years of free maintenance. We also appreciate the spacious interior and the 3rd row seats, which are nice to have if needed without compromising space. While the 2nd row is a little tighter than some competitors, I, being 6' tall, could still sit there comfortably. This SUV will serve us well for a few years until we find something in this price range that excites us.

My XC-90 has experienced some unusual problems, as informed by the dealer. Despite being just one month out of warranty, the rear bearings needed replacement, and the headlight covers have become pitted and discoloured. Additionally, the wheel nuts had to be replaced twice, once due to rust and the second time due to wear. The most concerning issue was with the infotainment module, which began malfunctioning with flashing lights and a blank display. This issue even corrupted the airbag system, which could have been dangerous. However, I took the necessary steps to have it fixed for $1350.00. Despite Volvo's lack of assistance, I am confident in my decision to prioritize my safety and invest in the necessary repairs.

Congratulations on your new AWD XC90! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so far. Your decision not to purchase the add-ons after reading reviews shows that you did your research and made an informed choice. The safety features are truly impressive, especially considering the price. The ride is smooth and quiet, making it feel like a high-quality vehicle. The 5-year wear and tear, maintenance, and warranty are fantastic bonuses. It's also great that you were able to take advantage of the Costco buyer's program and the 2009 tax incentives. Enjoy your new car!

I've had the car for about 8 months now. Unfortunately, the brakes started squeaking within a couple of months of purchase, which was disappointing since I had replaced a minivan with very squeaky brakes. Although I have taken it to the shop a couple of times, the issue has not been resolved yet. On the bright side, the V8 engine is great and provides a lot of power. However, I would not recommend the navigation package as it has not been very helpful. While the real-time traffic feature is useful, the system struggles to locate big retail stores without an exact address. Have any of you experienced the buzzing sound in the speakers? I am still trying to figure out what that is. Overall, I have found this car to be good, fun, and safe to drive around.

I have been driving this car for the past 4.5 years, covering 80k miles, and it has proven to be a reliable and decent car. While it may not be my favourite car, I certainly don't dislike it either. In comparison to our BMW X5, it may not be a performance vehicle, but it is still capable and pleasant to drive. It is incredibly comfortable for long road trips, making it perfect for a family of four. Additionally, it can easily tow our 3000 lb boat, and the V8 engine provides a powerful acceleration when needed. It cruises smoothly at highway speeds of 70-80 mph. We have not experienced any reliability issues, apart from the usual maintenance requirements such as replacing the tires at 45k and the brakes at 60k. Overall, it has been a pretty good car.

Hello! Thank you for considering the 2004 Volvo XC90 T6. We think it's a beautiful vehicle and we're sure you'll enjoy driving it. If you're interested in purchasing the T6 model, we recommend checking the service records of the transmission. The 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine provides a lot of power, but it can put stress on the transmission. To ensure the best performance, we suggest having the ATF serviced at a Volvo dealership every 25,000 miles. It's also important to check if the transmission has had any repairs or replacements. Additionally, we recommend servicing the front and rear differential oil as a preventive maintenance measure, as these are often overlooked. Finally, for any turbocharged engine, frequent oil changes are essential to assist with cooling of the turbocharger. Let us know if you have any questions or if we can help you in any way!

I am a proud and loyal Volvo owner who values the security, driving experience, and safety features that come with the brand. Recently, I decided to 'trade-down' from my 2013 XC60 to a 2011 XC90 and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The XC90 provides better visibility and a smoother driving experience, with the added confidence of automatic all-wheel drive. While the XC60 has some great electronic features, it doesn't quite match up to the driving experience of the XC90. I have driven through Adirondack blizzards with other all-wheel cars crawling or stopping, but my XC90 has always provided fierce grip and a comfortable ride. I have owned six Volvos in total, and I can confidently say that the XC90 is one of the best.
