Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 has been a popular choice for luxury SUV buyers, but like any vehicle, it has had its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical System Malfunctions: The electrical system in the XC90 has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Problems include sudden loss of power, faulty warning lights, and electronic glitches.
- Engine Failures: Engine failures have been reported in various model years of the XC90. These issues can lead to costly repairs and may affect the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks are another issue that some XC90 owners have reported. These leaks can cause damage to the vehicle's interior and may lead to electrical problems if not addressed promptly.
- Faulty Gearboxes: Faulty gearboxes have been reported in some XC90 models, leading to issues such as rough gear shifts and premature transmission failure.
- Airbag Malfunctions: There have been recalls for airbags that may not deploy correctly during a collision in certain XC90 models. These recalls affect models produced between 2015 and 2017.
- Software Issues: Software issues have been reported in some XC90 models, including problems with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision.
- Seatbelt Malfunctions: Some XC90 models have had issues with front seatbelt buckles that may separate during a collision, leading to a reduced level of protection for occupants.
While Volvo as a brand ranks well in terms of reliability, some individual model years and components of the XC90 have had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a safe and reliable driving experience in the Volvo XC90.

I traded my 2011 XC70 for this 2011 XC90 in March 2011 for a road trip from Alaska to Texas on to California and back to Alaska. This baby took me on a 13,000-mile adventure in just 30 days! I have to say, I have never had a vehicle cradle me on a long trip like this one. Even after driving many 600-800 mile days, I had not one ache or pain at the end of the day. The OEM Perrelli tires weren't great, so I switched to Continental AWD Contacts and it's now luxury personified. The NAV is a bit clunky, but I got used to it as the days went on. I always leave the NAV on because the backup camera takes too long to rise up. It's sad I gave up newer technology in the XC70, but ergonomically the XC90 is much better for tall guys.

This is my first SUV and my first luxury vehicle in general. I chose it for its stylish appearance and safety features, and I have not been disappointed. While I love this SUV and would keep it forever, I typically only get 14 MPG due to my almost exclusive city driving.

When it comes to 3 row luxury SUVs, the options are quite limited. The Mercedes GLS is too big and the BMW X5's 3rd row is unusable. That's why we narrowed it down to the XC90 and Audi Q7. My wife and I both fell in love with the XC90's exterior and interior, so we ended up purchasing the XC90 T8 Inscription with all the possible options. Although the MSRP was 85K, we were able to get a good deal. The car is very quiet and drives really nicely, and my wife swears by its handling. However, I find the driving experience a bit boring. The acceleration is nowhere close to my Mercedes E350, but I understand that it's a big and heavy car. It has an electric-only range of about 15 miles, which my wife loves due to its quietness, but I find it a bit sluggish in electric mode. In the last 4 months, I've had to visit the dealer twice. Once because the engine light came on and another time because of a rattling noise in the center console. The dealer fixed the engine light issue, but the noise issue has not been fully resolved (it only comes back at certain speeds). I think it might be due to the air suspension, but I'll have to live with it. I don't expect such issues in an 85K car. If I had to buy again, I would go for the T6, which is 400lb lighter and has better handling. It's also 15K cheaper. Now that it's been a year since I've had this vehicle, it has made two trips to the dealer for various issues. One for a bad temp sensor and another for a bad battery cooling pump. The dealership fixed a creaking sound in the center console by putting some extra insulation. I hope everything is sorted out now and that only regular servicing will be needed in the future. I've grown used to its driving characteristics, and I must say that the driving experience is best in Sports mode. Everyone compliments its looks.

This car is not only comfortable, but also beautiful, spacious, and modern. It is packed with so much technology that I am still learning about. The team at White Plains Volvo were incredibly helpful in getting me started and were great to work with. It has ALL the safety features you could imagine and more, including Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Pilot Assist, 360 View Camera (if you want it), HUD (Heads Up Display, which I don’t have), Remote Start and climate control directly from your Volvo phone app, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Volvo apps such as weather, Glympse (I think), Google Search, Spotify, Pandora, Navigation, WiFi with AT&T, Sirius XM Radio, Digital Driver Information Display, Parking Sensors, and more. I leased the Momentum, which is not the most expensive option, and it even includes Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance. This covers the first three services (10,000 miles, 20,000 miles and 30,000 miles) at no charge. Overall, I absolutely love my Volvo and only have minor concerns about reliability. Plus, I paid approximately $51,000 after the rebates and discounts, which is a great deal. :)

This is our second XC90 since February of this year. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with both vehicles, including brake problems, defective auto stop, battery charge issues, recalls, and suspension squeaking. Despite these challenges, I must say that 128 Volvo has been very accommodating on both the sales and service end. However, I have now filed a complaint with Volvo of North America to end the lease. It's such a shame because the car is gorgeous and drives sweet when I have it. Although the computer system can be confusing at times and the climate control can be unpredictable, we had an XC60 for years with never a problem. I'm hopeful that we can find a solution that works for everyone involved.

I purchased my Volvo XC90 brand new and have been the proud owner for over two years now. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing an issue with the A/C. Whenever I turn it on, there is a bad mold smell for the first 30 seconds, but thankfully it goes away afterwards. I have reported this issue to the dealer on four separate occasions, but despite their efforts, the problem still persists. Recently, at 58,000 miles, I was surprised to see a 'Low Oil Level' warning appear. Upon checking the dipstick, I found that the oil level was below the minimum. The dealer checked for oil leaks but found none, and suggested that the previous oil change may not have added enough oil. They also mentioned that it is normal for Volvos to consume some oil between services. I will keep an eye on the oil level to ensure there are no further issues.

We have owned several Volvos in the past, but unfortunately, our latest one has not met our expectations. We have experienced constant noise in the form of clunks, squeals, and rattles, and there is always an error light or message on. Despite being a certified ASE mechanic and doing all the work ourselves, we have spent a small fortune on parts. We have had to replace the rack and pinion, exhaust, struts, springs, tie rod ends, radiator, pulleys, and tires every 15K. The gas mileage and power are great, but everything else has failed. The stereo is substandard, and the mirror trim and light dimmer/turn signal indicator have fallen off, while the windows get stuck. Unfortunately, this has left my wife stranded more than any other vehicle she has owned. We tried to talk with the dealership and Volvo about these issues, but they were not helpful. Despite this, we are now shopping for two new vehicles and have decided not to consider owning another Volvo. We recently purchased a 2012 BMW X3, which has exceeded our expectations. The customer support is off the charts compared to Volvo, and the vehicle is in a league of its own. We regret not making the switch sooner and are now enjoying our new SUV.

Our NEW Volvo XC 90 has been in for service 5 times since purchased. So far everything has been an electrical problem...AC won’t turn on, screen goes blank, blinkers out, brights won’t work, mirrors won’t adjust, phone calls out and rings and you can’t cut it off, AC won’t turn on...worth mentioning twice when you live in Texas. Twice, these things have gone wrong right before a road trip, being the main reason we bought it. My list is extensive. Very inconvenient! They do resolve the problem each time but this is not what we expected with a luxury brand new vehicle. We contacted Volvo USA but they are unwilling to help in anyway. This is our fourth Volvo, never before have we experienced such issues. Customer service??

Vehicle year: 2018
I have owned THREE XC90s, yes, you read that right, THREE! My 2016 model had 2 sets of brakes and rotors, a sunroof that leaked, and multiple electronic failures. However, Volvo replaced it with a 2017 version which was great, except for the fact that the engine failed multiple times at 37k miles, which was terrifying as it happened while driving downhill on a mountain with my family in the car. After a month of no vehicle and going through a lawyer a second time, Volvo replaced my car with a 2018 model. Unfortunately, at 33k miles, my vehicle began having transmission issues which would temporarily resolve with computer updates but then go back into slipping. After speaking with Volvo, they said it was normal wear and tear. I decided I was done. I was paying for a car that spent more time in the shop than when I had it. I couldn’t do it anymore. I’ve driven Volvos my whole life, but I believe since being purchased they simply aren’t the cars they have always been known to be. Although the technology and safety features are impressive, if the car has so many faults daily, can you trust it will be safe when you need it the most?
