Volvo S80 2000 problems
The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.
The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.
The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.
The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common Volvo S80 2000 problems
The 2000 Volvo S80 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine's oil consumption and transmission issues.
- Engine Oil Consumption: Many owners have reported that the 2000 Volvo S80 has a problem with excessive oil consumption. This issue is often related to the engine's piston rings and cylinder walls, which can wear out prematurely, leading to oil leaks and reduced engine performance. Some owners have reported having to add a quart of oil every 500-1000 miles, which can be a significant inconvenience and lead to increased maintenance costs.
- Transmission Issues: The 2000 Volvo S80 has also been reported to have issues with its automatic transmission. Many owners have reported experiencing transmission slipping, jerking, and hesitation, especially when shifting from first to second gear. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out transmission fluid, a faulty torque converter, or a malfunctioning transmission control module. In some cases, transmission issues can lead to more significant problems, such as complete transmission failure, which can be costly to repair.
- Electrical Issues: Some owners of the 2000 Volvo S80 have reported experiencing electrical issues, such as malfunctioning dashboard instruments, blown fuses, and intermittent electrical problems. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty wiring, corroded connectors, and malfunctioning electronic control units. In some cases, electrical issues can be difficult to diagnose and repair, which can lead to increased maintenance costs and decreased reliability.
- Suspension Problems: The 2000 Volvo S80 has also been reported to have issues with its suspension system. Some owners have reported experiencing excessive suspension noise, especially when driving over rough roads or turning. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out suspension components, damaged bushings, and malfunctioning shock absorbers. In some cases, suspension problems can lead to decreased handling and stability, which can be a safety concern.
- Interior Quality Issues: Some owners of the 2000 Volvo S80 have reported experiencing issues with the car's interior quality. These issues can include squeaky or rattling interior components, worn-out upholstery, and malfunctioning climate control systems. While these issues may not be as significant as some of the other problems reported with the 2000 Volvo S80, they can still lead to decreased satisfaction and increased maintenance costs.
In summary, the 2000 Volvo S80 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine's oil consumption, transmission issues, electrical problems, suspension issues, and interior quality. While these issues can be significant, they are not uncommon for cars of this age and type. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

- VIN: YV1TS94D7Y1
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS, I'VE GOTTEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE FOUL SMELL OF GASOLINE LINGERING ON MY VEHICLE. SURE ENOUGH, I TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AND THE FUEL PUMP IS VISIBLY MOIST ON THE EXTERIOR FROM AN OBVIOUS FUEL LEAKAGE. I RESEARCHED "VOLVO S80 FUEL PUMP" AND FOUND A RECALL IS IN PLACE. THE RECALL STARTS FROM 2001 MODELS AND RANGES UP TO 2005 MODELS AND IS DUE TO THE MATERIAL USED IN THE FUEL PUMP (RECALL CAMPAIGN 09V-483). SINCE MY VEHICLE IS A 2000 MODEL, MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP SAID "I DO NOT MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS". MY CONCERN IS IF THE MATERIAL USED IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE FUEL PUMP CHANGED FROM S80 2000 TO 2001 MODELS. I WOULD LIKE TO BE NOTIFIED WHAT MATERIAL WAS USED FOR S80 2000 MODELS VERSUS THE MATERIAL USED FOR S80 2001 MODELS AND MAKE SURE THAT THE MATERIAL FOR S80 2000 MODELS "MAY NOT DEVELOP CRACKS DUE TO EXPOSURE TO CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND VARYING FUEL QUALITY" AS DOES THE S80 2001 MATERIAL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. *TR

Although I did encounter a blown transmission during a road trip, which was quite costly, I must say that the car has been great overall. It has a smooth ride and impressive speed, allowing me to outperform many Bimmers and Audis. The Tiptronic feature is also a lot of fun. However, I have noticed some issues with the front end assembly. Despite this, I still have a positive opinion of the car, which currently has 95k miles.

I have been rear-ended twice in this car, once with only 400 miles on the clock and more recently. On both occasions, the other driver's airbags deployed, yet I emerged unscathed. The car absorbed all of the impact, and my purse didn't even move from the front seat during the second incident. The attending officers confirmed that had it been any other car, the trunk would have ended up in my rear seat. Such is the safety of this vehicle that I am convinced to purchase another one.

I completely agree that cars can be hit or miss, but I was lucky enough to get a great one! It's amazing to think that I can drive a luxury vehicle for less than $8000. The seats in my Volvo are the most comfortable I've ever sat in, and the power it has makes me feel like I can do anything. I'm constantly surprised by how stylish it looks, even though it's from the mid 2000s. I absolutely love my Volvo and plan on keeping it for a very long time!

A great car. Accelerates on the fly. The sound system is awesome and it's very comfortable on long trips. It's a great overall value.

I noticed some negative reviews about the Volvo, but I recently purchased one with 136,000 miles and it's in great shape. The leather seats are in excellent condition with no tears or rips, and all the features such as the radio, heated memory seats, and sunroof still work perfectly. I'm not sure if the previous owner took really good care of it, but so far, I love this car. From the first time I drove it, I knew it was the one for me. Although I never considered a Volvo before, my experience has been wonderful. I'll keep an eye out for any major issues in the next year, but for now, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2000 T-6 and 99 T-6 models. While I appreciate Volvo's efforts to create a great car, I have encountered some issues with both models. Unfortunately, they have been quite unreliable and have caused me a lot of frustration. In my opinion, it may be best to consider other options. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

I noticed that all the complaints posted apply to my car too! That's why I decided to buy the extended warranty. I'm hoping that by the time I reach 50K, all the numerous 'kinks' will be out of the car. I've had to make 8-16 annual trips to the dealer for repairs, so why take a chance? I bought the warranty at 45k and it has been a lifesaver. When the car is not in the shop, it's a dream to drive. I've had some major repairs done at 38k mi, such as the throttle, motor mounts, and struts, which caused a noisy suspension. There have also been some minor annoyances like door lock and steering wheel adjustment failures/breakage. The brakes and tires wear out fast, but that's just because the car is heavy and has soft, safe Volvo brakes (note the motor mount failures).

Overall, I must say that the car is a great ride when it is working properly. However, I have had several problems with the suspension and struts, which has been a bit of a pain to fix since I purchased the vehicle in Baton Rouge and I live in New Orleans. Unfortunately, the local dealership puts you at the end of the line to get anything repaired since the vehicle was not purchased there. In my opinion, this vehicle is overpriced and I would not recommend buying a new Volvo.

I have driven my 2000 S-80 for 87,000 miles since purchasing it in Oct of 2000 with 18,000 miles on the odometer. Although the computer was replaced about 2 years later, it unfortunately caused some issues that have persisted since. Specifically, I have had to replace the mass air flow sensor every 6 months, although the car runs fine for about 2 weeks after the code is removed from the computer. Additionally, I have noticed some electrical issues and the car seems to be consuming head and tail lights. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address these issues and keep my car running smoothly.

I bought this car new, but unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. The interior fell apart and had to be reupholstered, and at 50,000 miles, the head gasket blew, which cost me $3,000 to fix. There were also several other issues that I encountered, with estimated repair costs of $10,000 at 60,000 miles. I hope my experience can help someone else avoid making the same mistake.
