Common Volvo V60 problems
The Volvo V60, a popular wagon version of the S60, has been known to have certain common problems across various model years. These issues range from engine concerns to in-car electronics faults, affecting the overall reliability and ownership experience of the vehicle.
Engine Issues
Engine problems are among the most frequently reported issues in the Volvo V60. One of the most prevalent engine problems is related to bad piston rings, which can lead to excessive oil consumption and reduced engine performance.
In-Car Electronics Issues
In-car electronics issues have also been a common complaint among Volvo V60 owners. A problem with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) has been identified in cars built between September 26, 2018, and October 30, 2018. A software update is available to fix this problem, which can be performed by any Volvo dealer.
Fuel System Faults
Fuel system faults have been reported in the Volvo V60, with issues such as difficulty filling up the tank and problems with the fuel-injection system. These faults can negatively impact the vehicle's fuel efficiency and overall performance.
Air Conditioning Issues
Air conditioning issues have also been reported in the Volvo V60. Problems with the AC compressor, condenser, evaporator, and heater system can lead to discomfort for occupants and reduced overall satisfaction with the vehicle.
Brake System Faults
Brake system faults are another common issue in the Volvo V60. Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system problems, and parking brake issues have been reported. These faults can compromise the safety and reliability of the vehicle, making it essential for owners to address them promptly.
Software Issues
Software issues have been identified in the Volvo V60, particularly in the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) and the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system. These issues can affect the vehicle's ability to send location information to emergency services after a collision and the AEB system's ability to apply the brakes when a forward collision is detected. Software updates are available to address these issues, which can be performed by any Volvo dealer.
In conclusion, the Volvo V60 has faced various common problems across different model years, primarily related to engine issues, in-car electronics, fuel system faults, air conditioning issues, and brake system faults. While the V60 is a largely reliable car, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure a more enjoyable and trouble-free ownership experience with the Volvo V60.

- Summary: I am afraid, someone may get KILLED. . . The car unexpectedly just starts to 'free wheel'. It all started approximately 6 weeks ago and progressively became worse. IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. I am a retired Software Engineer and worked in military defense for a government contractor. - - so, I know a software problem when I see it. My car just started to 'free wheel' (meaning, I have no control over the transmission or gas pedal). I was driving over by our local College and stopped for a light. When the light turned Green, I took my foot off the brake and pressed the accelerator. I went No where. . . (me - what is WRONG)? I pressed the accelerator again - nothing (the engine wouldn't even 'rev'). The car is still in gear, but nothing is happening! ! ! Now, what do I do? (the car is 'free-wheeling' - HELP - - no control or transmission). I am at a Green light and going NO WHERE. Then, in Panic (thinking this maybe a Software), I put the transmission in 'neutral' for a few seconds and then back in gear and put my foot on the accelerator. There is a hesitation, but the 'engine catches (can hear it slowly rev) and I start to move. Because it started while I was starting up from a STOP (at a STOP light), I thought it might have something to do with the 'Auto Stop / Start' function (actually, this exacerbates the problem). Then, Christmas day, coming back from visiting it happened again (I forgot to turn OFF the 'Auto Stop / Start') which is what I thought was causing the problem. BUT what made it much more DANGEROUS was: I was doing a 'left turn' on a busy street and almost got KILLED. So, all seemed to be OK, if I (remember) to turn OFF the 'Auto Stop / Start' function. UNTIL today, I was making a right turn on a busy street. As soon as I was over the railroad tracks, the car started to 'free-wheel'. ([XXX], NOW WHAT DO I DO)? I coasted to the right curb and 'glanced' over at the 'Auto Stop/start - it was ON (Oooh, NO). It just gets worse. . All of the door latches were replaced at the dealer on 28 Dec 2020 per recall R89978. The problem hasn't been confirmed by the dealer yet but is scheduled. - Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- Date Complaint: 2021-05-16
- VIN: YV1A0MSW1H1
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: THE FRONT SEATS ROCK/WOBBLE BEYOND AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL AND PRESENT A SAFETY ISSUE. IT'S VERY SUBTLE BUT ONCE YOU NOTICE YOU CAN'T NOT NOTICE. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AT VERY LOW SPEED WHEN BRAKING (I.E. PULLING OUT OF MY GARAGE AND SWITCHING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE) OR EVEN IN SUCH SIMPLE SITUATIONS AS GETTING INTO THE CAR. IT'S THE BACK OF THE SEAT THAT WOBBLES, BUT THE BOTTOM. I TOOK MY CAR INTO MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE SAID THAT THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT AS IT'S CAUSED BY A POORLY-DESIGNED PIVOT THAT IS PART OF THE SEAT ASSEMBLY. HE SAID HE THINKS THERE MIGHT BE A FIX OUT FOR THE 2018 MODEL YEAR BUT THAT THE 2017 HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE SAME DESIGN AND EVEN THOUGH HE HAS SEEN A NUMBER OF OTHER V60S WITH THIS ISSUE COMING UP. IT'S SIMPLY POOR DESIGN THAT IS PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE TO CORRECT. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING A CAR WITH A LOOSE SEAT AS I WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN SHOULD I EXPERIENCE A CRASH. WILL THE WHOLE BACK OF THE SEAT COLLAPSE IF IT'S ALREADY LOOSE? I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE OR REPLACED FOR FREE BY VOLVO.

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your V60 with the sports package for the past 3 months and have already put 5000 miles on it! While there may be a slight hesitation after stepping on the gas, the handling and ride are very good. It's also worth noting that the V60 is much smaller than the boxy Volvo wagons of old, which can be a plus for some drivers. The back hatch is perfect for groceries or even a small dog, like your mini Aussie. However, it may not be the best fit for bikes, even with the seats down. Additionally, the legroom for backseat passengers is a bit tight, but it's great to hear that your pre-teen kids are comfortable. The front seats, on the other hand, are exceptionally comfortable. While the hi-tech and eco features may not be perfect, it's still great to have them available. It's also worth noting that the auto engine shutoff when stopped can be a bit spotty, and the MPG may be lower than expected based on EPA estimates.

Vehicle year: 2016
As a long-time Saab car enthusiast, I have owned several models over the past 20+ years, including the classic 900 Turbo, 9000 CSE Anniversary Edition, and 9-5 Aero wagon. My 2003 9-5 Aero wagon was a great car to drive, being very comfortable with plenty of cargo space. However, with a daily 90-mile commute and 266k miles on the clock, it was time to replace it. I was looking for a car that was as comfortable as my Saab, which was not an easy task. Most cars have poor front seats for long-term driving comfort, but I needed a car that could move around a lot of stuff and had plenty of cargo space, hence my interest in wagons. After considering several options, I decided to try the 2015.5 V60 T5 Drive-E with sport seats and suspension, and I have enjoyed it every day since I bought it. It's now nearly 3 years old and already has 70k miles, but it has not had any reliability problems. The front seats are very comfortable and need a little time to break in. The front visibility is great with no glare, and I like the control layout. I also enjoy listening to satellite radio every day, and the Bluetooth connection to my phone is reliable with excellent telephone sound quality. My only complaint was the stock acceleration was not quite as strong feeling as I enjoyed with my Saab. However, that was fixed, and the car transformed when I recently bought the Polestar Performance Optimization software for the car.It can be easily downloaded and installed at any Volvo dealer. With the new software, it now passes very quickly on the freeway while also improving the throttle and transmission behavior. Highway gas mileage is unchanged. In my opinion, the V60 T5 Drive-E with Polestar software is the best currently available balance of comfort, safety, driving experience, fuel economy, and storage capacity. I highly recommend it!

I bought my car in April and have already driven over 9,000 miles, including some long road trips. I'm happy to report that I've been able to hit all EPA mileage ratings, including on the highway, and have averaged 30 mpg over the last 6,000 miles. The car has been flawless and easy to use and drive. I still catch myself staring at it or pausing while sitting in it to take it all in. My wife and I even went on a month-long vacation with our cat and fit everything we needed in the car with the seats down. There was plenty of room! The car is fast, quiet at highway speeds, and the seats are wonderful. I've even done four 12-hour stints in the driver's seat and haven't been uncomfortable at all. I truly believe this car is a gem and should be on your test drive list, at the very least.

During the first 2500 miles, the T5 Cross Country proves to be quick and responsive. It's about the same size as the XC70 but offers more back seat room, which is sure to make the kids happy. Although you may lose a bit of cargo space, the infotainment system is as easy to use as an iPad - if you can't figure it out, it might be time to give up on technology! Additionally, the ground clearance is comparable to most crossovers, making it a fun car to drive.

Vehicle year: 2018
I ordered my 2015 V60 in March 2014, soon after it went on sale in the USA, and it was delivered in May 2014. Unfortunately, my dealer only had AWD in stock, but I really wanted FWD with the new Turbocharged Drive-E 4cyl engine/8-speed transmission. However, the AWD has turned out to be a great combo of power/torque and gas economy, with an easy 30+ mpg highway. I opted for the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and heated fabric seats (all) as two of my options. It's one of the few cars you can buy with heated seats without leather. I also prefer the base model dashboard over the upgraded electronic dashboard, and the base model lacks the roof rails, which gives it a cleaner look. The engine/trans combination is one of the best features, along with the classic Volvo seating that's perfect for my 6’ size, 36,000 miles of maintenance included, and Euro styling. The only downsides are the excessively aggressive start/stop feature, which I learned to disable in traffic and in anticipation of signal light change and turns using the paddle-shifter Left. I doubt the feature really saves very much, and just one unplanned repair of this feature in the life of the car will more than negate any fuel saving. Also, there's no Oil Dipstick in the Drive-E Engine, which is a bit of a nuisance. I considered the Audi A3, but the arrogance of the dealer turned me off. I would have also considered a Saab had they not gone broke. My wife has the XC60, but I prefer the V60 as a driver’s car. One tip is to activate your free 6 months of Sirius promptly, as it has an expiration date. I had to negotiate with Sirius to get my full 6 months. Overall, this is my favorite car after previously owning (new) a VW, Audi, Impala SS, Saab 9-3, and Cadillac CTS.

Starting at 110,000 miles, things went south. However, before that, I had a great experience with my V60 T5 Drive E. 2.0T. The 'E' stands for economy, and it really works on highways, providing a 3 to 5 mpg increase if you keep the speed reasonable. The car runs at under 1800 RPM at 70 MPH, which is amazing for a 4 cylinder. Everything in the car feels high quality, with great texture and no rattling. Just be careful with the rear brakes, as the electronic emergency brake tends to eat the inside pad. I bought the car in 2018 with 66,000 miles on it, and it's over 91,000 now. I haven't had any issues (until 110k). The leather is really nice, but it can get ungodly hot and stay that way for the entire drive. The air conditioning is slow to cool the car, but once it's cool, it works well. The navigation system is a bit cumbersome to program, but the audio system is amazing. I can even stream music from my phone via Bluetooth. Overall, I really love this car. However, the ongoing maintenance nightmare has been hard to justify. At 110,000 miles, the car started burning $8 quarts of oil, often twice between oil changes. I was told it was normal for that mileage, but at 142k, the car failed on a 600 mile drive. I learned that the oil burning was a result of a clogged PCV system that caused oil from recirculated crank case gasses to be sucked into the engine intake and burned, a failure that is well known but not talked about. At the same time, I lost the thermostat assembly, which cost $220 and required the intake to be removed to replace it, totaling $560. At 143k, I lost 2 mass air flow sensors, which cost $750 to replace. The sensors were over $300, which is expensive for a $30 part on most cars. At 150k, scheduled maintenance cost me $1100 for timing belt and water pump.Don't be fooled by the water pump at timing belt change. It's electric and can be easily replaced when it starts failing. The pump from Volvo costs $720, but thankfully there are aftermarket pumps available for $380 to $580. At 156k, I started experiencing idle racing issues where the engine was running at very high RPM with revving. The first part needed was a purge valve, a small and simple solenoid that cost $154. At 158k, they still haven't finished fixing it and the car is still racing and revving. Now it's a valve cover vent and air intake vent that broke because the crank case gasses still aren't being recovered correctly and the pressure blew out these cheap plastic vents. This car was a new drive train for 2015, and there were no long term high mileage test results available when I bought it. It turns out that, like many European cars, the hype is in the luxury appointments and handling, not the reliability. I stuck it out with my little sport wagon because I really do love this car. However, I drive 600 miles a week, and no matter how much I love it, when it starts stranding me constantly, it's time to part ways. I hope your Volvo experience is better. Make sure to have the PCV system inspected regularly for clogging. I suspect that is where all my failures are coming from, that ventilation of the internal pressure failed, and it found every weak spot it could to escape.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased about 115 months ago with the intention of using it for my new family. Unfortunately, when I went to bring my newborn home, I realized that the rear-facing car seat did not fit properly. The front passenger seat had only about 3 inches of legroom, which made it impossible to use. After realizing that the car did not meet our needs, I tried to trade it in at 7 different dealerships, but was disappointed to find that the car had depreciated by more than 50%. The sticker price of the car was $42,534, but after just 15 months, the trade-in value was only $20,000. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend planning on keeping it for a long time to avoid losing money.

I was really excited when I purchased the car. It was less than a year old with only 10k miles. However, I have encountered some issues with the computer system since it reached 30k miles. Unfortunately, the owner's manual is only available on the computer system, which makes it difficult to access. Additionally, checking the oil and other levels is complicated and requires the use of the car computer system. To get an oil change, I have to go to the dealership or find a specialized mechanic, which can be challenging. Overall, my experience has been frustrating. I would advise caution before purchasing a car with this type of computer system.

The car experienced a persistent issue with power loss, which was addressed by rebuilding the engine at 29k miles. However, the issue persisted due to pre-detonation of spark plugs, which caused the timing to retard and resulted in power loss. This was a safety concern, especially when merging, as it occurred without warning. Despite Volvo acknowledging the issue, they claimed it would happen under certain conditions and were unhelpful in resolving the issue. A search under Volvo Drive E Clicking provides more information. After reaching out to the CEO, the defective motor was finally replaced at 39k miles, and the car has been performing flawlessly since then.
