Volvo V40 problems
The Volvo V40 is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 2012 to 2019. It was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and was on sale in Europe between 2012 and 2019.

V40
The V40 was designed by American Chris Benjamin, the interior is the work of Pontus Fontaeus, and was the last Volvo to be designed under Steve Mattin, before he departed the company. It is built on the Global C platform with modifications to the electric power steering, and revised spring and damper settings.
The engine lineup at launch are: two petrol engines; a 1.6 litre EcoBoost I4 producing either 150 or 180 hp, dependent on specification, and a 2.5 litre Volvo B525 I5 producing 254 hp, and two diesel engines; a 1.6 litre PSA Peugeot Citroën / Ford Duratorq engine, which produces 115 hp, whilst only emitting 94 g/km of CO2, and a 2.0 litre I5 Volvo diesel engine available in two versions, 150 hp and 177 hp. In some countries, the V40 T5 uses a 2.0 litre I5 (B5204T9) producing 213 hp @ 6000 rpm and 300 nm from 2,700 to 5,000 rpm.
From the model year of 2014, Volvo has begun fitting its in-house developed Drive E (VEA) diesel and petrol engines to the V40. As of January 2015, these engines are available in the new V40 D4 (replacing the previous five cylinder D4) and V40 T5 (replacing the petrol five cylinder T5). Also available is the IntelliSafe safety precrash system.
Available in both the V40 and V40 Cross Country bodies, the D4 Drive E includes a four-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine rated 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft), a six speed manual transmission tuned for improved fuel economy, pressure feedback from each fuel injector, reduced friction, and a smart valve solution on the cooling system for a more rapid heat up phase after a cold start.
The T5 Drive-E includes a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine rated 243 PS (179 kW; 240 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft), with eight speed automatic transmission.
These new engines replace the older, but identically branded, five cylinder engines. After introduction of the VEA D4 and T5, the 1.6 D2 and 2.0 five cylinder D3 are replaced with VEA 2.0 D2 and D3 engines. The 1.6 EcoBoost and 2.0 five cylinder are replaced with VEA 2.0 T2, T3, and T4 engines. For some petrol automatic models, a de stroked version of the VEA 2.0, with 1.5 litre displacement, is used for T2 and T3.

Common Volvo V40 problems
The Volvo V40 has been a popular model from the Swedish car manufacturer, known for its safety and comfort features. However, like any car, the V40 has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Potential engine fire: Some Volvo V40s, particularly those built between February 6, 2012, and April 21, 2015, have been reported to have a risk of engine fires due to a possible coolant leak during the warm-up process. It is recommended to check with a Volvo dealer to ensure that the vehicle is not affected by this issue.
- Airbags might not deploy correctly: A defect in the horn operating mechanism can cause the airbag mounting to become loose, which may prevent the airbags from deploying correctly in the event of a collision. This issue can be resolved by replacing the airbag mounting plate.
- Faulty fuel gauge: Some Volvo V40 owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge, which may display incorrect readings or stop working altogether. This problem can be intermittent and may require professional diagnosis and repair.
- Poor engine idling: Carbon buildup in certain engine parts, such as the MAF sensor, ICV, and throttle body, can cause poor idling in the Volvo V40. Regular cleaning of these parts can help resolve this issue and improve engine performance.
- Water leak in boot: The boot seals of the Volvo V40 are prone to leaking, particularly in the spare wheel well. This can result in water buildup and damage to the carpets. To fix this issue, the black boot seal needs to be removed, and a sealer applied before refitting the seals.
- Loose airbag mounting: A loose airbag mounting can be caused by a defect in the horn operating mechanism. Replacing the airbag mounting plate can resolve this issue and ensure the airbags deploy correctly in case of a collision.
- Hard ride: Some Volvo V40 owners have reported a hard ride, which can be uncomfortable for passengers. This issue may be more noticeable on rough roads or during high-speed driving.
- Faulty fuel gauge: The fuel gauge in some Volvo V40s may display incorrect readings or stop working altogether. This issue can be intermittent and may require professional diagnosis and repair.
- Poor performance: Carbon buildup in certain engine parts, such as the MAF sensor, ICV, and throttle body, can cause poor performance in the Volvo V40. Regular cleaning of these parts can help resolve this issue and improve engine performance.
- Unusual smell (2.0-ltr Models): Some Volvo V40 owners have reported an unusual smell inside the car, which can be accompanied by occasional hesitation during acceleration and an engine warning light. This issue may be caused by a faulty EGR valve, which can be cleaned or replaced to resolve the problem.
- Doors not locking or unlocking: This is a commonly reported problem with the Volvo V40, and it may require replacing the locking mechanism. This can be a tricky job to do yourself, but professional assistance is available.
- Cracked fuel hose: Volvo V40s built between April 2015 and March 2016 may have a cracked fuel hose, which can cause fuel leaks and potential fire hazards. Replacing the fuel hose can resolve this issue.
- Numb clutch pedal: Some Volvo V40s fitted with a manual gearbox have a numb clutch pedal, which can make finding the biting point tricky. This issue can be addressed by adjusting the clutch cable or replacing the clutch master cylinder.
- Faulty headlights: Some Volvo V40 owners have reported issues with the headlights, which may not provide adequate lighting or may fail altogether. This issue may require professional diagnosis and repair.
It is important to note that not all Volvo V40s will experience these issues, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent many of these problems and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
Is the Volvo V40 a reliable car?
The V40 didn't feature in our most recent reliability survey. However, in the last one it did feature in, it finished in sixth place out of the class of 37 family cars with a diesel engine and 20th place if it had a petrol engine.
How many miles will a Volvo V40 last?
258,000mi
What is Volvo V40 lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Volvo V40 is 258,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.
Is the Volvo V40 expensive to maintain?
My first year service back in the day of my 68 plate V40 Momentum Nav Plus (1.5 petrol Geartronic) was £285, which was the most expensive car I had ever serviced. Previous cars they were about £100 cheaper on average to service from the dealer. It was a lease, so had to use main dealer.
Which Volvo V40 engine is best?
Depending upon how you intend to use your car, we would suggest you look for a 1.6 D2 diesel as the best all-round engine choice for earlier cars and the 2.0 D2 for post-2015 models. Both manage to motivate the V40 with adequate pace, although it's not quite as effortlessly as those of the Audi A3 or Volkswagen Golf.

Volvo V40 2000
- Date Of Incident: 2011-06-29
- Date Complaint: 2011-06-29
- VIN: YV1VW2554YF
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: 2000 VOLVO V40 - VERY WELL MAINTAINED, 2ND OWNER, APPROXIMATELY 83,000 MILES. I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE CAR WOULD SURGE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH THE A/C ON AND WHEN I HAD STEADY PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR (I.E. ICRUISING AT A STEADY SPEED). THE SURGE IN RPM'S WOULD BE RHYTHMIC, VERY SUBTLE (100-200 RPMS) AND CONTINUE INDEFINITELY UNTIL I TURN THE A/C OFF - AT WHICH TIME THEY WOULD CEASE. THEY WOULD SOMETIMES RESUME WHEN I TURNED THE A/C COMPRESSOR BACK ON. THIS HAPPENED INFREQUENTLY OVER THE PAST MONTH (IT'S JUNE IN CT, MY STATE OF RESIDENCE) AND WOULD NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME I RAN THE A/C - BUT ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE A/C COMPRESSOR WAS RUNNING. THEN A REMARKABLE THING HAPPENED TODAY - WHILE CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITH THE A/C COMPRESSOR ON - THE CARE SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY SURGED IN A WAY THAT IT HAD NEVER DONE PREVIOUSLY. THE INCREASE IN RPM'S WAS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO DOWNSHIFT INTO THE NEXT LOWEST GEAR. FORTUNATELY, I HAD ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME TO ALLOW ME TIME TO RESPOND WITHOUT HAVING AND ACCIDENT. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE RPM'S STARTED SPIKING TO ALMOST 4,000 THEN QUICKLY BACK DOWN TO 1,000. THE RPM'S CONTINUED TO THIS RAPID BACK AND FORTH SPIKING AND DIPPING FOR ALMOST 30 SECONDS. I TURNED OFF THE A/C/ BUT THAT DIDN'T HAVE AN IMMEDIATE AFFECT (AS WAS THE CASE IN THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED EPISODES WHEN THE SPIKES AND DIPS WERE MUCH MORE SUBTLE). WHEN TURNING OFF THE A/C DIDN'T DO THE TRICK ((AS IT HAD IN THE PAST) I THEN IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE CRUISE CONTROL - IT WAS OFF. I THEN STABBED AT THE ACCELERATOR WITH MY FOOT SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT FINALLY SETTLED DOWN. AND I HAVE THE FACTORY VOLVO RUBBER MATS THAT ARE SECURED TO THE FLOOR BY A POSITIONING PIN (I'M METICULOUS ABOUT MY CAR THE MAT WAS NO WHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR). I AM NATURALLY VERY WARY OF THIS CAR NOW, ESPECIALLY AFTER READING THE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FOR THIS MODEL. WHY NO RECALL? *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2008-11-11
- Date Complaint: 2010-05-18
- VIN: YV1VW27513F
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: "2003 VOLVO V40 COLD START BRAKE FAILURE" ON COLD WINTER MORNINGS, WHEN TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING, AFTER THE ENGINE IS STARTED AND AS I BACK OUT OF MY GARAGE, THE BRAKE IS SO WEAK THAT I CANNOT EFFECTIVELY STOP THE VEHICLE. I WOULD NEED TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I CAN AND THE CAR WOULD STOP IN ABOUT A FULL CAR'S LENGTH. IT'S QUITE SCARY. THE PROBLEM ALWAYS GOES AWAY IN ABOUT 1 TO 2 MINUTES. THIS ONLY HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY, ABOUT 2 TO 3 TIMES A MONTH IN THE WINTER, BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO PREDICT WHEN IT HAPPENS. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO MY VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND LEFT MY CAR THERE OVERNIGHT. BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCED THE FAILURE. THEY SUGGESTED ME TO REPLACE THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER PUMP. SO I DID AND PAID FOR A NEW BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER PUMP. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED OR ALLEVIATED. KNOWING THIS COULD HAPPEN ANY TIME, I AVOID USING MY VOLVO IN THE WINTER AND USE EXTRA CAUTION DURING OTHER TIMES. *TR

- VIN: YV1VW2554YF
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ON JULY 19,2008, OUR 2000 VOLVO V40 LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH ON US 29 IN VIRGINIA. THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, BUT IT DID NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR. WE WERE ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OFF THE ROAD, AND HAVE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC. WE WERE TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS A SENSOR FAILURE. ACCORDING TO OUR SERVICE RECORDS, THE BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR AND CAMSHAFT RESET VALVE WAS REPLACED. THREE DAYS LATER, ON JULY 26, 2008, THE SAME THING HAPPENED - THIS TIME IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION. AGAIN, FORTUNATELY, THE CAR REMAINED RUNNING AND SEEMED TO LIMP ALONG TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC. AGAIN, THE CAR WAS TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC, WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. A LITTLE INTERNET SEARCH ON OUR PART UNCOVERED A SERIES OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE PROBLEM - AN ETM FAILURE. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF WORKING WITH OUR MECHANIC TO GET THIS FIXED. *TR

Vehicle year: 2003
I recently purchased a fully loaded 2003 V40 after conducting extensive online research on smaller, upscale wagons. The V40 offers the best value compared to other upscale smaller wagons, such as the BMW 3-series and Audi A4A Avant. After driving the car for the first hundred miles or so, it's clear that it's on par with the competition. The current incentives make it an even better deal. It's almost unbelievable!

Vehicle year: 2001
It's common for headlights to burn out annually, and sometimes rear wheel alignment is needed to prevent tire burn. Unfortunately, the original equipment tire model wasn't stocked locally, so it had to be special ordered from TX, twice. At 25,000 miles, the turbo exhaust seal started leaking, and the leather steering wheel even melted and had to be replaced. There was also a steering wheel squeak that required the replacement of the steering rack. While brake service is frequent, this is to be expected with Volvo's. Despite these issues, it's worth noting that the dealer and factory have been fantastic in standing behind their product.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like it was the perfect choice for your recent road trip with your partner. The folding rear area with plenty of room for your camping gear is a great feature, and it's wonderful to hear that the highway ride was smooth and the engine provided plenty of power. The cabin being quiet and similar to much more expensive luxury cars is definitely a plus, and the leather seats sound very supportive. It's great to hear that the sound system is awesome too! And averaging better than 32 miles to the gallon over 1200 highway miles is impressive. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with a fun car to drive that has great safety features, and is comfortable and practical.

Vehicle year: 2002
I'm so happy with my first Volvo! Despite some common issues with the V40, it has held up well under my hard driving. The car is a blast to drive - it handles well and has plenty of zip. The front seats are incredibly comfortable, too. While some people have complained about the non-standard radio controls, I find them to be the most effective and useful controls I've ever used. The tuning knob to scan through 20 presets makes more sense than separate preset buttons and is much easier to use while driving. It's worth noting that some common problems affecting this vehicle are brakes that wear out quickly and an electrical system that burns through headlights.

It sounds like you've got a great car! It's almost as heavy as your old '95 850T, which had 210000 on it, and it handles like a larger car. With the turbo engine, it has a lot of zip, and it can even U-turn in just 3 lanes. Plus, there's plenty of room for a bike, wheelchair, or lots of luggage. While the middle seat is a bit short, it's not as bad as some other compact wagons.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you chose a Volvo for its great reputation and reasonable price. Although it may be a bit small for larger families or moving lots of things, it's still a very practical car that can hold quite a bit with the rear seats completely flat. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the acceleration is quick for a 4 cyl, even better than many V6s you've driven. While the handling is tight enough for a sports wagon, it may not be the best for searching for curves. The best part is the fantastic mileage! It's great to hear that you're getting 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. It's also impressive that you've had zero maintenance issues in 5 years. Keep up the good work and don't forget to change your oil!

I, like many others, used to believe that Volvo is a very safe car. However, during a tune-up, the mechanic informed me that this particular Volvo model is notorious for catching on fire. The manifold is designed to sit right above the exhaust, so any drip of oil, which mine has quite a few little ones, can potentially set my car on fire! This news shocked me and filled me with intense fear. I was scared to even drive it a block! The thought of being burned alive is a paranoia I have to deal with every time I smell a strong smell of gasoline or some other burning chemical while driving. Unfortunately, finding the parts I've needed has been near impossible. My ignition coil 'connectors' were totally melted and were only sold attached to a much larger and super expensive part that I didn't even need. So, I went to Pic A Part and got them, used, off a torn-up vehicle. Additionally, my check engine light had been on for the full 4 years I've owned it. Also, the tail light housings crumbled in my hand when I went to replace the bulb. They don't sell those anywhere at all, same thing, I got them at a junkyard.

This vehicle has experienced several issues, including indicator and light failures, a.c. malfunctions, turbo failure at 30,000 miles, a useless radio, engine support collapse at 40,000 miles, and falling interior trim. However, it is important to note that these issues are not representative of all Volvo vehicles. It is recommended to thoroughly research and consider all options before making a purchase decision.

The car has been serviced four times since its purchase last year, with the most recent service taking over four weeks to complete. Unfortunately, the fit and finish of the car is lacking, and there are issues with the A/C and trim pieces that degrade quickly.
