Volvo Xc90 2005 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common Volvo Xc90 2005 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Volvo XC90 2005, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Injector Failures: Diesel XC90 models have experienced injector failures, which can prevent the vehicle from starting properly. Repairing injector issues can be costly, with potential costs reaching £1200. If a diesel XC90 shows signs of reluctance to start, it is advisable to walk away from the purchase to avoid these repair expenses.
- Electrical Problems: Early models of the XC90, including the 2005 version, have been known to suffer from electrical issues affecting the operation of gauges. These problems can impact the functionality of various electrical components in the vehicle, leading to potential malfunctions and the need for repairs.
- Steering Failure: In 2006, a significant recall was issued for the XC90 due to steering failures under continuous exceptionally hard use. Although this issue was addressed through a recall, it highlights a potential safety concern that owners of the 2005 XC90 should be aware of. Ensuring that any relevant recalls have been addressed is crucial to maintaining the safety and performance of the vehicle.
- Brake and Bulb Replacement: The XC90 tends to go through brake fluid and bulbs more quickly compared to other large SUVs, typically requiring replacement every 35,000 and 45,000 miles, respectively. While this is a common maintenance issue, it is important to stay on top of these replacements to ensure the vehicle's safety and performance on the road.
By being aware of these common problems with the Volvo XC90 2005, potential buyers can make informed decisions when considering the purchase of this vehicle. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections can help mitigate these issues and ensure a smoother ownership experience.

SEE PHOTO THE ELECTRICAL COMPLAINT FROM THE MAGNETIC ELECTRICAL BEINGS IN ME AND IN THIS PICTURE I BELIEVE IS ABOUT DESIGN OF THE FUSES IN VEHICLE AND WHAT THEY ARE TRYIN TO COMMUNICATE HERE I BELIEVE WOULD BE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE CONNECTIONS LIKE WHAT IT IS DOING TO THEM AS IT GOES THROUGH THOSE TYPES OF FUSES. WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM IN THOSE PLASTIC FUSES AND WOULD LIKE THEM THE FUSE TO BE DESIGNED FURTHER APART A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN A PENNY AND WITH THE CONNECTION STRAIGHT ACROSS AND NOT GOING UP AND DOWN AND BACK THROUGH IT SELF. THE MAGNETIC BEINGS WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CONNECTIONS STRAIGHT ACROSS SO THAT THEY DON'T INTERFERE WITH EACH OTHER WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH THE SUBSTRAIGHT. NOT SURE BUT YOU WERE THIS TYPE OF BEING YOU WOULD TRY AND COMMUNICATED THESE THINGS AND DESIGN WELL JUST LOOK AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE THEY LIKE THE OLDER GLASS FUSE WITH THE STAINLESS STEEL DESIGN. IF YOU COULD THEY ARE ASKING THAT YOU THE NTSB GO BACK REDESIGN A FUSE THAT DON'T GO BACK INTO ITSELF THEY LIKE STRAIGHT ACROSS THE CONNECTIONS TO GIVE THEM BETTER FLOW. REMINDER THIS GOES TO THE EARLIER FORM THAT I WROTE TO YOU IT AN ADDITION INFORMATION CAUSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT PART OF THIS WORLD I AM REFERRING TO THE MAGNETIC BEINGS IN ELECTRICITY IN EVERY VEHICLE MADE AND NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO MORE CONSIDERATION ESPECIALLY WHEN MAKING SYSTEMS THAT HEAVILY RELY ON THE ENTITIES. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-12-28
- VIN: YV1CZ911751
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: IN DECEMBER OF 2016, AT APPROXIMATELY 95000 MILEAGE, THE "SERVICE TRANSMISSION URGENT" MESSAGE AND LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR STOPPED FUNCTIONING AND MAKING LOUD CLANGING AND RATTLING NOISES. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO "INFINITY OF MEMPHIS" DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED WITH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP ASKED US TO CONTACT "VOLVO CARS OF NORTH AMERICA" FOR DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION, WHICH WE DID, BUT VOLVO REFUSED TO HONOR OUR CLAIM STATING THE CAR WAS TOO OLD, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS UNDER THE 100000 MILE WARRANTY. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO "VOLVO OF MEMPHIS" DEALERSHIP, WHICH CONTACTED VOLVO MANUFACTURER AND INFINITY OF MEMPHIS DEALERSHIP, AND INFORMED US THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WOULD PAY $5000 MAXIMUM TOWARDS A NEW TRANSMISSION, COST OF WHICH WAS 8000$, AND WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE REST OUT-OF-POCKET, ABOUT 3000$. THE OTHER OPTION WAS TO PUT A REFURBISHED TRANSMISSION AT AAMCO FOR 3000$, COST OF WHICH WOULD BE COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. WE ELECTED THE LATTER, SINCE THERE WAS NO OUT-OF-POCKET COST. AT THIS TIME, WE WERE TOLD THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND OTHER MESSAGES WOULD BE GONE, ONCE THE CAR WAS FIXED. HOWEVER, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CONTINUES TO REMAIN ON. ADDITIONAL COMPLAINTS WERE FILED, BUT AAMCO, VOLVO OF MEMPHIS AND INFINITY OF MEMPHIS CLAIM IT IS UNRELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. A LETTER WAS SENT TO VOLVO CARS OF NORTH AMERICA LLC, ATTACHED BELOW, BUT VOLVO REFUSED TO LOOK INTO OUR PROBLEM SAYING THE CAR WAS TOO OLD. I SPOKE WITH A VOLVO REP OVER THE PHONE WITH NO RESOLUTION. WE WOULD LIKE FOR VOLVO TO INSTALL A NEW TRANSMISSION IN OUR VEHICLE, AS NUMEROUS FORUMS AND ONLINE SITES HAVE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT DEFECTIVE VOLVO TRANSMISSIONS IN THESE EARLIER MODELS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-09
- VIN: YV1CZ911051
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2005 XC90 (ODOMETER APPROX. 178,000 MILES) THROWS CHECK ENGINE, REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED DASHBOARD WARNINGS INTERMITTENTLY, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAS A NEW CEM AND A SECOND NEW THROTTLE BODY IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS. IT ALSO ISSUES A LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT BULB FAILURE WARNING, EVEN WHEN THE BULB IS LIT, AND THE LEFT TURN BLINKER IS STICKY. SOMETIMES, THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND PASSENGER SIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR READJUST SIMULTANEOUSLY UPON OPENING THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR, WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNITION AND NO ONE SITTING IN THE SEAT. RECENTLY WHILE TRAVELING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AT 65 MPH, THE CAR ABRUPTLY LOST SPEED (A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE) AND STRUGGLED TO ACCELERATE TO 40 MPH. A FEW DAYS LATER, IT LOST POWER IN HEAVY CITY RUSH-HOUR TRAFFIC (ALSO TERRIFYING) AS A RED LIGHT TURNED GREEN. IT BARELY MADE IT TO 10 MPH AND CAME CLOSE TO CAUSING A CHAIN REACTION CRASH WITH THE CARS BEHIND IT (ALSO TERRIFYING). LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO STEER INTO A NEARBY BANK PARKING LOT, TURN IT OFF AND RESTART IT. IT DROVE NORMALLY BUT THE WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES, CITING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WOES, WHICH RESULTED IN THE TWO PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED REPAIRS. THEY IDENTIFIED A WIRING SHORT AS THE CAUSE BOTH TIMES, YET ACT MYSTIFIED AS TO WHY THE PROBLEMS HAVE PERSISTED DESPITE THOSE REPAIRS. I REPORTED THE SEAT/MIRROR SHIFTS AND THE ONGOING LOW BEAM BULB FAILURES TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, WHO REPLIED (WITHOUT EXAMINING THE CAR) THAT THE BULB WAS EITHER BURNT OUT OR LOOSE IN THE SOCKET, AND THAT THE SEAT SHIFTING WAS SIMPLY THE WAY THE MEMORY FUNCTION WORKS. I GET THE SENSE THAT VOLVO DOES KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE, AND THEY DON'T WANT TO TELL ME. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED WITH THE LACK OF ANSWERS, AND AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-28

This is a fantastic vehicle. It has the cargo room of an SUV and the performance of a sport sedan. It feels solid, heavy, and safe. It's also a blast to drive, with impressive acceleration at highway speeds. And it looks great, too!

It's been almost 3 years since I became an owner, so I guess it's about time I share my review. In my opinion, this is the best all-around luxury SUV available. The styling is just right - not too big and boxy like the Lexus GX, not too minivan-like such as the Acura MDX, not too feminine like the Lexus RX, and not too mail-truck like the Mercedes ML. It looks very similar to the BMW X5, which is a compliment. The ride is not as plush as a true luxury car, but it's better than most SUVs. The handling is very good. The acceleration with the 2.5T is okay at the low end, but highway passing needs more punch. The materials used both inside and out are of high quality. The only repairs I've had were a loose tie rod end (probably due to a pothole) and a dead rear wiper motor, both of which were fixed under warranty. I mostly drive in the city and get around 14-15 mpg.

I never thought I would be a Volvo driver, but after taking a test drive in this SUV, I knew I had to have it. The comfort that Volvo offers its drivers and passengers is outstanding. Despite the smaller 5-cylinder engine, this car has spunky acceleration, and with proper driving, I can manage decent fuel economy for this size of a vehicle. I have only been driving it for about 1 1/2 months, but I have had no problems so far. The car was meticulously maintained by its previous owner, so I don't anticipate any problems.

I'm so glad we didn't end up with the T6! The only downside is that the tires (originally Pirelli) had to be replaced twice, but that's not unusual for an AWD SUV. There were two issues I had: the front brakes were making a strange noise, but they fixed it by putting something on the brakes. The other problem was when the engine wouldn't turn over because of an issue with the key. I had to have it towed to the dealer. However, I feel very safe in this car, especially since I was hit by a mini cooper on my side door and the car didn't budge. I have two small children and their safety is my top priority. I was considering trading it in for a newer VOLVO XC90, but after reading other reviews (I only have 52K miles), I think I'll stick with it.

The car has been a great addition to our family since we purchased it new. We decided against the T6 model due to the transmission horror stories we had read. The engine is sufficient for most situations, but lacks power for highway passing. It handles and drives like a car, and has an average gas mileage of 16/22 mpg. The exterior looks great and the interior is very functional. With the 3rd row folded down, there is good cargo space. However, the 3rd row isn't very useful and cuts into the 2nd row leg room. The seats are very comfortable for long trips. After the first 3 years of free dealer maintenance, the cost of maintenance is a bit expensive. We had a couple of unexpected repairs after the warranty expired, which cost us $1,200 in total. Although it's not as reliable as a Honda, it's not as bad as a BMW/MB. Overall, we would definitely consider buying the next generation XC90.

My experience with Volvo has been disappointing. Despite purchasing the car for its safety and reliability, I have encountered numerous issues. While the car was wonderful for the first 2 1/2 years, it began to experience problems at 56k miles. Over the last 12 months, I have spent over $4000 on repairs, including replacing the tires twice within 10k miles and the brakes twice within 8k miles. Currently, the AWD is not functioning and the battery goes dead due to a malfunctioning module. I believe that the AWD module and brake module should be recalled and replaced at no cost to me. As a result of these issues, I have lost confidence in Volvo and will not be purchasing their cars in the future.

This is my first review of a car. We have owned the car for 2.5 years and 40,000 miles. We absolutely love the looks, size, and comfort of the car. However, we have experienced a few minor issues that have been a bit frustrating. Here is a list of the items we have had to address so far: brakes all around, broken window switches (twice), fog light buttons that were pushed in somehow, driver and passenger seat plastic trim, engine ventilation hose, headlight plastic that hazed, engine torque mount, and the driver seat leather that has worn a bit. Additionally, the steering wheel and shift boot leather are starting to flake, and the center console wood has faded a bit. It's worth noting that we live in non-sunny Oregon and the car is always garaged. Despite these minor issues, we still love our car and would highly recommend it!

The 2005 V8 AWD 'top of the line' for that year had some issues that needed attention. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues could have been avoided. It is important to note that every car has its own set of problems, and it is up to the owner to ensure that they are addressed in a timely manner. With that said, it is important to have a reliable car that you can count on, and Volvo is committed to providing just that.

My T6 is currently in the shop for a replacement transmission. As per the warranty requirements, the radiator also needs to be replaced. The estimated cost for these repairs started at $4800 and is now expected to exceed $7000. While I am disappointed that these issues have arisen just over 100K miles, I still believe that a car costing nearly $50K new should last at least 150K miles. It is my opinion that VOLVO needs to improve the quality of their vehicles.
