Volvo S90 problems

The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by Swedish automaker Volvo Cars since 2016. Its estate variant is called the Volvo V90.
Models
For the model year of 2017 (the first model year), a short and long wheelbase sedan as well as an estate model were made available. For 2017, the short wheelbase model was sold in North America and Europe, while the long wheelbase model was primarily sold in China. Volvo has hinted at possible coupe variants, but not until at least 2020 as the Polestar 1.
S90
Before its reveal, the first official pictures of the S90 were shown on Wednesday, 2 December 2015. The S90 was unveiled to the public in January 2016, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The S90's design was well received, winning the Production Car Design of the Year award for 2015.
While not a direct successor to the second-generation S80, the S90 replaces it as the flagship sedan in Volvo's lineup. Several trim levels are available, ranging from Momentum to Inscription. In July 2016, an optional, cosmetic R-Design package was announced. A long wheelbase version was announced for availability in the United States.
For the 2022 model year in the United Kingdom, the range was limited to the S90 Recharge, a mild-hybrid sedan. The S90 Recharge was limited to Plus and Ultimate trim levels with the T8 AWD mild-hybrid engine, a 2.0-litre 455-horsepower (339 kW; 461 PS) 4-cylinder available with all-wheel-drive only.

Common Volvo S90 problems
The Volvo S90 is a luxury executive sedan that has been praised for its sleek design and smooth drive. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Volvo S90 based on complaints from owners:
- Software issues: Software problems can affect the vehicle's connectivity module, which sends location information to emergency services after a collision. A software update is usually required to fix this issue.
- Airbags that might not deploy correctly: There have been two recalls for airbags that might not deploy correctly during a collision. The first is due to airbags that don't meet the required specification, and the second is for the retaining bolt on the curtain airbag, which could break and reduce the level of protection the airbag can provide.
- Seatbelt issues: A small number of cars made between 11 May 2016 and 19 August 2016 had a problem with front seatbelt buckles that may not have been punched correctly during production. This could result in the buckle and seatbelt bracket separating during a collision.
- Seat rails: The driver and front passenger seats rails might have been assembled incorrectly and will need to be inspected and then repaired by a Volvo dealer. This applies to examples manufactured from 18 October 2017 and 4 December 2018.
- Engine fire: Volvo is presently in the process of recalling around 70,000 cars in the UK fitted with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, over potential engine fires for S90s made before 25 April 2018.
- Automatic emergency braking (AEB): The AEB system might not apply the brakes when the forward collision sensors detect an imminent collision. A software update is required to fix this issue.
- Leather upholstery issues: The leather upholstery on top of the dashboard may start peeling off, and the speaker panel may come off, especially in hot climates.
- Instrument cluster issues: The entire instrument cluster may need to be replaced, which can be costly.
While these issues can be concerning, it's important to note that Volvo has a relatively high reliability rating of 90%, according to the What Car? Reliability Survey. However, it's always a good idea to have any potential issues checked by a Volvo dealer before purchasing a used S90.
Is the Volvo S90 a reliable car?
Reliability Survey it finished in 17th place out of 32 manufacturers. Data on the S90 shows it came in fifth place out of 10 cars in the luxury car class, with a high rating of 90%.
What goes wrong with the Volvo S90?
According to repairpal.com, here are the most common issues with the Volvo S90: Vibration from rear brake rotors. Check engine light thanks to coolant issues. Leaks from AC evaporator.
How long should a Volvo S90 last?
The Volvo S90 will last around 200,000 miles, but we don't recommend investing in one with more than 100,000 miles - with an exception. If the previous owner of the vehicle maintained the car well, it could give you a life past the expectancy.
Why buy a Volvo S90?
2024 Volvo S90 Review
Volvo is among the few automakers still committed to sedans (and, nobly, sport wagons) and the flagship S90 makes a compelling alternative to SUVs — even to Volvo's very good XC series — with its seating for five, acres of legroom, advanced driver aids and cool, modern take on luxury.

2018 T5 with 35k miles now. Car is aging very well. You'll be pleased to know that I get compliments every time I have a passenger. My only negatives are that the touch screen takes about 15 seconds to warm up, the auto stop must be disabled every trip, and the AC can be a little wonky. Otherwise, everything is good. The car has never required any special service and feels luxurious. I didn't get the upgraded stereo which seems great, but the standard stereo is good. As a happy purchaser, I highly recommend this car.

The S90 is a stunning car! The proportions are perfect, and the styling is classic. The interior is the best place to be of any of the 50 plus cars I’ve owned. The aesthetics are spot on. Although the performance of my T5 AWD is not a killer, it is what I expected. If performance with a capital P was totally important, I would have sprung for the T6. My driving is mostly on the highway, and 250ish HP is just fine. However, there are a few downsides. The corporate 4 cyl. is not particularly smooth, and doesn’t sound that great either. It’s obviously a modern motor, but suffers from a cylinder deficiency in a large car application. Sorry Volvo, but one size really doesn’t fit all. It isn’t a horsepower issue, it’s about refinement and smoothness. Lastly, the ride is not that great. Even on a smooth interstate highway, you can feel too much of the road. I understand it isn’t a Rolls or Big Jag, but it isn’t a C class either. Volvo would do well to farm out the chassis tuning if they can’t do better. In conclusion, the S90 is one or two cylinders and a more compliant chassis away from being a world-class near-luxury sedan. UPDATE. Seems a large part of the road harshness was not one, but three Pirelli P Zero tires that were not able to be balanced, or maybe not exactly round. After replacement, the road noise and vibration/harmonics are hugely improved. Second ride update...after replacing the O.EM. Pirelli P Zeros with Michelin Primacy Tour A/S tires, the ride characteristics are excellent. MY GAS MILEAGE. Now that the S90 is well broken in, I can report Interstate mileage of 32.9 MPG on my last long trip. This is at speed limit plus 4 mph, i.e. 64-74 mph. My suburban every day driving is right at 25 mpg. I am not a feather foot. Last update: The Volvo is gone at the end of the warranty period. It was a very good experience, but not good enough to buy another or purchase an extended warranty. The T5 engine may not be the most satisfying option, even as a base offering. Additionally, Volvo's recent push towards electrification may not be for everyone. While I appreciate the effort, I personally prefer not to own an ICE Volvo when the company is in a rush to discontinue this technology. With that said, I have decided to say goodbye to my sweet S90 and hello to a Lexus.

The Volvo S90 is a fantastic midsize luxury sedan that exudes confidence and luxury. It offers a premium driving experience that is less stoic than Audi and less flashy than a Benz. The cabin is hands down much better than a BMW 5 series. Volvo is undergoing a revolution as a premium brand, pushing further upmarket while not losing sight of their vision. If you are in the market for a midsize luxury sedan, you owe it to yourself to check out the Volvo S90. You can get it loaded to the gills and still spend thousands less than the competition, while getting a better car in many ways.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2018 Volvo! It sounds like you've had experience with many different car brands, and it's great to hear that the Volvo is the best one you've owned. Not only is it a great value for the money, but it's also more luxurious than its competitors. It's impressive that you're averaging 150 miles per gallon over the first 1,000 miles of driving, and it's great to hear that the car has performed beautifully so far with incredible gas mileage in the city of over 150mpg and 32mpg on the highway.

I recently purchased a 2020 S90 R-Design, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. Despite owning a variety of luxury vehicles in the past, including Bentleys, Lambos, S600s, S63s, 911s, Panameras, 7 Series Range Rovers, and more, I had never considered buying a Volvo until I saw an S90 driving down the freeway. The exterior styling/design caught my eye, and the following day I drove to our local Volvo dealership to test drive the S90 Inscription and S90 R-Design. I ended up purchasing the R-Design because I prefer a sportier look, and I have not been disappointed. The car drives and handles incredibly well, and the interior styling/design is top-notch. The safety features and amenities are also impressive, and the Pilot Assist operates like a dream. I constantly catch people staring at the vehicle while driving, and the value is unbeatable. The back seats have amazing leg room, and if you want more power, RaceChip offers 3 choices of a plug & play tuner that can be controlled using an app on your smart phone. I have used a RaceChip brand tuner before on my Panamera 4S, and it has never disappointed me. It's a German company and, in my opinion, the best tuner on the market. They offer 7 different driving tunes, all controlled by your smart phone. If you need to take the vehicle into service, you can simply unplug it and throw it in your backpack, and it's impossible for a technician to detect that one was ever installed.Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this vehicle. It is the best car I have ever owned, not only in terms of performance, but also in styling and value. The car looks and feels like it should cost much more than it does. In fact, I loved it so much that I went back to Volvo the next day and purchased a 2020 S60 Inscription with every available option. The salesman drove it to my house and I left it parked under our Porte-Cache with the keys on our front step and a note. My wife was thrilled when she came home to her surprise, especially when she realized that it is shorter and smaller than the S99, which she prefers. I can't remember the last time she was this excited about a new vehicle. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend sitting in one of Volvo's completely redesigned models and test driving them all. Make sure to try out the factory-equipped driving modes, take it on the freeway, and experience the variety of tech and safety features. I promise you won't be disappointed, especially when comparing pricing to Volvo's German competitors. The value is truly exceptional. Once you drive one, you'll want to buy one, because these cars are simply amazing!

Hi there! I recently traded my 2018 Audi A5 for a Volvo and while it's a nice looking and comfortable car to drive, I've had a few issues. Unfortunately, my Volvo has depreciated about twice as much as the Audi did. Additionally, I've been having trouble with the auto stop/start feature and the Pilot Assist system. The shaking when I stop and go is quite annoying, but I've found that pushing a button every time I drive the car helps. The Pilot Assist system works well on straight highways, but I've noticed that it can be a bit wobbly on other roads. Lastly, I've had some trouble with the GPS and voice recognition, but I've found that sending the destination from my phone helps. Overall, I'm still enjoying my Volvo despite these minor issues. Thanks for listening!

I recently leased a 2017 Volvo S90 and unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. One of the issues was with the brakes, which needed to be replaced after only a few months. Although it was not covered by the warranty, the cost was $1500.00. Currently, my car is in service due to an oil gasket issue, which unfortunately is not covered by the warranty either. I will need to pay $1796 plus tax when I pick up the car tomorrow. While there have been other issues, I am hopeful that the service department will be able to resolve them. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This updated review comes after 6 months of use. Let's be honest, there are some tech bugs that can be frustrating. Apple CarPlay did come via an OTA update, but it may not be the best on this screen. When using a map and in the view that has other apps visible (i.e., music controls and other widgets), the map becomes quite small and is in Landscape orientation. Unfortunately, it is not connected to the dashboard map, nor is it connected to the HUD, so it's not very useful given how small it is on the screen. If you want to leave it in full-screen mode, it's not bad, but the steering wheel controls don't seem to control music aside from the volume. The general feel is that the car was not designed to work with CarPlay, and there are some issues that need to be addressed. There is so much more, but I'll leave it there. Based on this alone, I may consider other options. Pivoting away from Apple CarPlay, the proximity sensors are quite sensitive when it comes to slamming on the brakes (while in reverse) and toggling the cameras on/off. The way the brakes engage may make you think you hit something, and the cameras taking over the screen have some lag and glitches. The speed limit (signs) displayed in the car are frequently incorrect, and at times one wrong sign will overlap the correct one (i.e., the dashboard will display two different signs at the same time). While there are some issues with the tech, the driving dynamics remain outstanding. The car feels very confident on both dry and wet surfaces. It handles bumpy (paved) roads quite well despite the low profile tires. It's not as quick as it should be, but it's an enjoyable drive. The seats are everything the hype promises.... so comfortable, supportive, adjustable, etc. This includes the rear seats as well; our kids only want to ride in this car now!The car has been holding up well even with kids in and out all of the time. The interior is super quiet with little wind or road noise and no creaks or rattles. This is great because the Harman Kardon stereo is outstanding. We have experienced zero mechanical issues and the paint is still pristine. The gas mileage is as advertised. This review comes after about 6 weeks of use and I am really impressed with the car overall. It has tons of great features and makes excellent use of its considerable length. I love the looks and the interior feels far roomier than other cars in the class that I have driven. Although there have been some design flaws with the tech, I found them not quite as bad as many have written. The driving dynamics are very much consistent with other cars in the class that I have driven. It has more than enough pep to get you into any merge lane you need.Highway speeds are really quite comfortable in the car and it provides a very smooth ride, even on 35 profile tires. I really appreciate one of the two gauge clusters, the one with the maps, but the other one is underwhelming. The one I prefer has easily readable information and the screen is flawless under all lighting conditions. The HUD works well and is not cluttered, although it cannot be used with polarized sunglasses. The trip computer is not the best, however. It does not provide a readout of each tire's pressure, only a light indicating a low tire, which requires some effort to locate the offending tire. I would love to give this car 5 stars, but it just needs a bit more power and Apple Car Play is a must-have. Google's automotive platform is not of the same caliber (not talking about Android Auto, but rather this car's Google OS). One final note: We chose the local Volvo dealer over Audi because the South Florida dealers were asking for above MSRP. Our local Volvo dealer did not do that.

We purchased a 2018 S90 T8 inscription with every option, which had only 13k miles on it. However, after driving it for 6k miles, we experienced several issues. The rear suspension collapsed once and generated errors in the instrument cluster twice. The infotainment system randomly restarted multiple times, and the voice command button got stuck, which was quite frustrating. Additionally, single lines of pixels disappeared from the LCD instrument cluster twice. Although all these issues disappeared once the car was shut off and restarted, we found it unacceptable for a flagship model of any make. Therefore, we decided to trade it in after only 4 months of use.
