The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

in general, i'd be wary of the '04 and older P2 (s60/v70/s80) cars. the '05 and up models seemed to be a little more solid, but they still have some common problems. the 5cyl engines are damn sturdy, as are the AW transmissions (i'll assume you're looking at an auto). the PCV system is a definite weak point.

- Summary: 225/55R 95H On the highway in center lane going 70mph. Car was starting to shake and then heard loud noise coming from the back. Next thing the tire blew. Tread ripped off the bumper, side rear panel, taillight and trim under the door. We were lucky to be able to pull over to the shoulder. We had to get a flat bed tow back home. Took the tire to the Goodyear place where we had purchased the tires. There was 12000 mile on the tires. We purchased a new tire. Driving home there was the same shake. Went back to the tire place and they put the passenger rear tire on the front passenger side to see if it was truly the tire. Yes it was, so we purchased 3 new Goodyear tires, the same ones that was replaced from flat. The Goodyer guy told us to send the tire to Goodyear, because it felt it was defected. Maybe they would pay the over $5000.00 to repair our car. He told me that they have had a lot of problems with that tire. Goodyear sent a certified letter to us stating " Tire condition occured as a result of substantial impact causing overdeflection of the tire and fracture of sidewall rubber and/or fabric plies and/or liner material". They will not pay. If we had hit something substantial we would not be here today. There were not warning light or messages prior to the blowout.

The airbag is very easy to be replaced in less then 10 minutes. Because of this it is absolutely absurd for me to travel for ten hours to get something done that I can do myself in 10 minutes. They said I can buy the airbag and they could send it. But this being a recall is'nt it their responsibility to fix it in any way possible. I just feel like this is wrong that they are doing this and am addressing it in this compliant.

- Summary: I have been requesting the recall service of my vehicle since November 2020. I was first told by the dealership they were delayed in getting the replacement airbag but should in January. Called in January and they still didn’t have them and after asking I was put on a list and told they would contact me. I checked back in August 2021 and was told I was still on the list. I have not been contacted by the dealership since that time and my recall is still not repaired. The nearest dealership is in the next state 2.5 hours away. I just want this completed as I’ve been potentially driving a dangerous (to me) vehicle for over 2 years now.

- Summary: In mid summer of 2021, my car overheated randomly without any warning driving down the interstate. I pulled off immediately and cut the car off but, it was already done. The radiator cracked as a result of the engine overheating. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he replaced the radiator. Since then I’ve been having a lot of check engine codes. It’s now May of 2022, my car is still using and going through a lot of coolant. There are no leaks in the coolant. My mechanic recently said that the radiator fan is malfunctioning which is popping the check engine and also probably making the car overheat. I contacted Volvo dealership after seeing the recall on the radiator fan for my year make and model but, they informed me there is no recall on my car via the vin#. This week I’ve been watching not only the coolant level but also the fans…. My car has two fans on the front, one of which is not cutting on when it should be , the smaller one seems to be working fine. I think the same recall issue is also effecting my car but, Volvo is not helping me.

Volvo Car, USA by email advised me to contact another local dealer in my area on March 12, 2022: "Thank you for your patience while your case was open. I apologize for any inconvenience. if your servicing dealer does not have the parts to complete the repairs for your vehicle. You have the option of making an appointment with the other dealers in your area. Our search has shown that Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars is a feasible option for you. Please find their information listed below." Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars advised me to call my own dealer, Jim Fisher Volvo since they did not have the parts to repair or replace my air bag. I contacted JIm Fisher Volvo again and they did not have the parts and I remain on their waiting list.

The V70 2.4T is a great car that offers plenty of space for families. It's a sports sedan that is perfect for those who want a little extra room. The turbocharged inline 5 engine is one of the smoothest and most responsive I've ever driven. Volvo has done an excellent job with the handling, making it crisp and without excessive body roll or sag. The ride is also fantastic, even on the potholed streets of Chicago.

We replaced our first used Volvo, an 850 Wagon, with this newer model, only to find that it is an over-engineered and temperamental computer with 4WD. Its performance is very good. I love being able to accelerate rapidly from 70 mph around a semi with no problem, and its wet/snow performance is great. However, I am constantly staring at that 'check engine' light. It can illuminate for anything from not replacing the gas cap securely to an emission control sensor, wire, computer, or who knows what. The cruise control failed after one year and minimal use, and it took three trips to the dealer to get it fixed. Once the warranty expires, watch out!

I love this car! It's comfortable, safe, and reliable, and it can take me anywhere I need to go. However, I have to admit that my $5000 purchase of a used car has probably now cost me upwards of $10,000, including repairs. I've owned it for 5 years, and it hasn't been exactly what I was looking for in a used vehicle. It's been one thing after another- engine mounts, locks, windows, power steering leak, rear drive shaft, and now the air pump system. This is not a used vehicle you want to buy if you're not willing to put a lot of money into it. Looking back, I probably would have settled for something cheaper to repair.

Hi there! So, we bought this car with 50k miles and it had quite a few squeaks and rattles. Unfortunately, we had to replace the AC at 62k which cost us $1300. However, overall it's been a good car so far. Although, I do wonder about its future reliability. What do you think?

I traded my 2003 S40 because my family grew and the brakes were suspect. In June of '04, I traded for a 1999 used Volvo V70 from a Ford Dealership, thinking that since I already had an existing relationship, things would go smoothly. However, I have had some issues with the key staying stuck in the ignition upon shutting off the engine. Despite this, I am still optimistic and planning a summer trip to the East Coast to see how this vehicle responds. Stay tuned!

I have owned this car for approximately 8 months and unfortunately, it has been in the shop six times. Despite several attempts to fix the squeaking front end, it has not been resolved. Additionally, there have been issues with the power lock motor, power window motor, and power steering pump. As a previous owner of Japanese cars, this experience has been disappointing. However, I am confident that I will make a more informed decision next time and choose a Honda.

When I was searching for a reliable car, the first brand that came to mind was Volvo. My boyfriend had an 86 Volvo 240 wagon at the time, and that car never let him down. I thought I had found my workhorse, a car that would easily last me 300k miles. However, I was mistaken. In the first week, the check engine light came on, and I spent hundreds of dollars on diagnostics fees, but the issue was not resolved. The heater and A/C also failed, and the repairs were costly. I had to replace the timing belt, water pump, and several sensors, one of which cost $350. The door lock even broke. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this car.

This car has had several issues since the beginning, but unfortunately, the dealer was unable to fix them during the first visit. The cup holder was broken, and there were frequent electrical problems. Additionally, the car had trouble starting from the first day, and despite multiple attempts, the dealer was unable to fix it. The transmission also had issues with clunking down-shifting, which proved difficult to repair. The rear hatch panel broke off, and although it cost $170 to fix, it detached again a month later. When I brought this to the dealer's attention, they suggested that I was slamming it too hard. The ECS light also came on, and the car felt like it was going to stall. I later discovered that this issue was covered under a class action lawsuit, which the dealer failed to inform me about. They also recommended that I replace $3,000 worth of parts before resolving the issue.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 05 V70R after having to part ways with my 2004 S60R. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car's front suspension and headlights right after leaving the dealership. The suspension was making a clunking and squeaking noise, and the headlights were pointed straight down, making night driving difficult. I took the car back to the dealer, and they were able to fix the suspension issue, but the headlights were still not properly aimed. Despite having to take the car to the service department twice in the first three days of ownership, I'm hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. Thanks for listening!
