The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common Volvo V70 problems

The Volvo V70 is a popular car known for its rugged look and stylish design, but it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the issues that Volvo V70 owners have reported:

Suspension Problems: Volvo has stated that the V70 was not meant for serious off-roading due to potential suspension problems. The suspension can wear out prematurely, causing alignment and suspension geometry problems. This can affect the ride quality, causing unresponsive acceleration and a jumpy ride. If you notice any issues with the ride quality, it could be due to a problem with the electronic throttle module, which can gunk up over time.

Diesel Particulate Filter: If you notice black fumes coming out of the exhaust, it could be due to a diesel particulate filter blockage. This part needs to be replaced every 75K miles, and if the car repeatedly stalls and idles badly, it could be the culprit. If you hear any whine coming from the front of the car while driving at low speeds with moderate acceleration, it could indicate a problem with the turbocharger.

Transmission Issues: Volvo V70 owners have reported issues with the transmission, including erratic shifting and loss of transmission operation. These problems can be expensive to fix, so it's essential to address them as soon as possible.

Power Steering: Some Volvo V70 models have been known to have power steering problems, which can make the car difficult to steer. This issue can be caused by a coolant leak during the warm-up process, which could result in an engine fire in extreme circumstances.

Fuel Gauge: Some V70 models have been known to have issues with the fuel gauge, which can show incorrect levels. This issue can be corrected with a software update, but in the meantime, it's essential to keep the fuel level above a third of a tank to avoid running out of fuel.

Air Con – Climate Control: It's essential to test the climate control and air conditioning system when buying a used Volvo V70. Some owners have reported issues with the system, which can be expensive to fix.

Engine Problems: The worst problem category for the Volvo V70 is engine problems, with the 2001 model year being the worst. The most-reported problem is total transmission failure, which can be expensive to fix.

In summary, while the Volvo V70 is a popular car, it's essential to be aware of these common problems before buying a used one. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from becoming major problems, but it's essential to be aware of them and factor them into the cost of ownership.

Which Volvo V70 to avoid?

in general, i'd be wary of the '04 and older P2 (s60/v70/s80) cars. the '05 and up models seemed to be a little more solid, but they still have some common problems. the 5cyl engines are damn sturdy, as are the AW transmissions (i'll assume you're looking at an auto). the PCV system is a definite weak point.

What is the best year of a Volvo V70 to buy?

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy? We'd say that's a toss up between the 2004 and 2005 model years of the Volvo V70.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

It can also vary depending on the make and year of your Volvo. That being said, with the proper care the average lifespan of a Volvo is typically 20 years with over 200,000 miles.

What year did the Volvo XC70 have transmission problems?

Aside from the 2012 Volvo XC70, the 2003-2008 and 2010-2012 model years could also develop transmission shifting problems.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: YV1BW982381
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: 225/55R 95H On the highway in center lane going 70mph. Car was starting to shake and then heard loud noise coming from the back. Next thing the tire blew. Tread ripped off the bumper, side rear panel, taillight and trim under the door. We were lucky to be able to pull over to the shoulder. We had to get a flat bed tow back home. Took the tire to the Goodyear place where we had purchased the tires. There was 12000 mile on the tires. We purchased a new tire. Driving home there was the same shake. Went back to the tire place and they put the passenger rear tire on the front passenger side to see if it was truly the tire. Yes it was, so we purchased 3 new Goodyear tires, the same ones that was replaced from flat. The Goodyer guy told us to send the tire to Goodyear, because it felt it was defected. Maybe they would pay the over $5000.00 to repair our car. He told me that they have had a lot of problems with that tire. Goodyear sent a certified letter to us stating " Tire condition occured as a result of substantial impact causing overdeflection of the tire and fracture of sidewall rubber and/or fabric plies and/or liner material". They will not pay. If we had hit something substantial we would not be here today. There were not warning light or messages prior to the blowout.

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I live 5 hours from the closest Volvo dealership so I called to see if they could send me the the air bag that has been recalled. The airbag is very easy to be replaced in less then 10 minutes. Because of this it is absolutely absurd for me to travel for ten hours to get something done that I can do myself in 10 minutes. They said I can buy the airbag and they could send it. But this being a recall is'nt it their responsibility to fix it in any way possible. I just feel like this is wrong that they are doing this and am addressing it in this compliant.

I have not been contacted by the dealership since that time and my recall is still not repaired. The nearest dealership is in the next state 2.5 hours away. • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-03
  • Date Complaint: 2022-05-03
  • VIN: YV1BW982681
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: In mid summer of 2021, my car overheated randomly without any warning driving down the interstate. I pulled off immediately and cut the car off but, it was already done. The radiator cracked as a result of the engine overheating. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he replaced the radiator. Since then I’ve been having a lot of check engine codes. It’s now May of 2022, my car is still using and going through a lot of coolant. There are no leaks in the coolant. My mechanic recently said that the radiator fan is malfunctioning which is popping the check engine and also probably making the car overheat. I contacted Volvo dealership after seeing the recall on the radiator fan for my year make and model but, they informed me there is no recall on my car via the vin#. This week I’ve been watching not only the coolant level but also the fans…. My car has two fans on the front, one of which is not cutting on when it should be , the smaller one seems to be working fine. I think the same recall issue is also effecting my car but, Volvo is not helping me.

Latest negative Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Wilfrid Ryan 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 1999

During my 30 years of car ownership, I found the Volvo v70 to be quite unreliable and expensive to maintain. Unfortunately, I had to make major repairs every 4-6 months on average, which resulted in an annual expenditure of over $4,000. Even with regular maintenance, I had to replace the transmission, headlamps, ball joints, and axel boots within a 12 month period, with less than 100k miles. Despite being advertised as a car that could easily perform well for over 300k miles, I found it to be quite disappointing. Additionally, Volvo charges extra for options that are now standard on other cars, such as auto door openers, car racks, and side rubber bumper mouldings. Therefore, I cannot recommend this car.

  2. Leonardo Turcotte 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2000

...and my last; hello Toyota!. This car has been a bit of a challenge for me, unfortunately. I've had a few issues from the start, including the rear axle falling off, 3 blown injectors, a faulty catalytic converter, a non-functioning headlight, a cracked driver's door, and a weak air conditioner that still wasn't quite right even after a $2,500 repair. On top of that, I've had a few false alerts from the check engine light coming on for various defective sensors, which has been frustrating. I've found that the Volvo dealers can be a bit difficult to work with, as they often require appointments made well in advance. For example, the dealer in Hyannis took 3 days to replace one injector and didn't offer a courtesy car. Despite these challenges, I'm hopeful that things will improve with time and I'm grateful for the support of the Volvo team.

  3. Marcus DuBuque 2025-01-23

    Vehicle year: 2001

Our 2001 XC70 has required some repairs over the years, including a new ignition-key tumbler ($600), a new set of rear shocks ($750), which unfortunately damaged a 6 month old set of tires and required their replacement ($650). Additionally, we experienced a transmission failure while on the highway, which was a critical and dangerous situation. The solution was a new transmission, which cost $3,400. We also had to pay for some minor glitch fixes that were not covered by warranty. All in all, our 'new car' has cost an average of $1,250 per year in repairs alone. It's important to keep in mind that owning a Volvo can come with some unexpected expenses, but we believe it's worth it for the safety and reliability that Volvo provides. We understand that some customers may have had negative experiences, but we encourage everyone to reach out to Volvo Customer Care for assistance and support.

  4. Jeffery Christiansen 2025-01-19

    Vehicle year: 1998

Congratulations on your new purchase! We wanted to share a helpful tip with you. We found that dealership work and parts from Volvo can be quite expensive. For example, a heater core replacement from Volvo costs $800, but it's actually a two-hour job that can be done for less than $200. Alternatively, you can find a good independent mechanic who doesn't blindly charge book rates and get it done for around $400. For front struts, we recommend going to a professional unless you have special tools or knowledge. However, you can save money by going to a decent independent shop, where it will cost around $600 instead of over $1000 at Volvo. There are also quite a few other items that are relatively easy to do yourself, and you can save even more money by finding aftermarket parts. We hope this information is helpful to you!

Changing a single headlamp or rear tail lens may seem like a daunting task, but with a little guidance, it can be done easily. Although some features may break and be expensive to fix, the Ford vehicle still has some great features such as the electronic steering module and Variable Valve Timing. While it may not have the best high-speed merging capabilities, it still provides fair bottom end torque. As someone who has owned several Volvos in my lifetime, I hope that Geely can improve upon the Ford's design. It's worth noting that these guys also make marine engines as well as trucks.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just read your message about your Volvo and I totally understand how you feel. It's tough to find a car that can compare to your V70R, especially when it's been so reliable for you. It sounds like you made a great decision to get new tires and an oil change instead of trading it in. I'm sure you'll find the perfect car eventually, but in the meantime, enjoy your trusty Volvo! Let me know if you need any help or advice in your car search.

This car is exactly what you would expect from Volvo. It has understated performance and a well-designed body that handles beautifully. As someone who has owned two Volvo wagons, including the previous 240 model, I can say that I absolutely love the wagon for its comfortable ride and SUV-like hauling capabilities. I am also very pleased with its fuel economy, as I commute 70 miles round trip daily on interstates and average an impressive 26 mpg.

I purchased my '99 V70 Base Wagon with around 160,000 miles on it, and it came with all the maintenance and repair receipts since it was new. Currently, it has about 214,000 miles on it, and I'm happy to report that it's still going strong! Surprisingly, it still has the original muffler and exhaust system, starter, alternator, radiator, and clutch. The A/C works great and has never needed to be recharged. Most cars would have had all of those parts replaced by now, but not my trusty V70! The engine and transmission have been rock solid, and the 5-banger has plenty of power without getting me into trouble with the law. The engine holds 5 quarts, which is more than most smaller engines, and it's never used more than a quart in 5000 miles. I get between 20 and 25 miles per gallon around town and about 30 on long trips. The seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in, and the visibility is terrific. I've used my V70 to tow numerous cars on a dolly, including other V70s! While I have had it, I've had to replace the wiring harness to the back hatch, which had several broken wires when I bought the car. The brake pads are finally getting down after 50K or more miles, and the driver's seat vinyl is finally starting to crack. Not bad for a 19-year-old car! The oil filter will pour oil on your hand when you take it off, every time, so I recommend using a disposable glove. The radiator shroud is made of fiberglass, and it gives me an itchy rash if I ever rest my arm on it. The biggest complaint that I have is the squeaking dash, which is worse when it's cold. There is one mounting point that tends to break after a few years, but it can be repaired (if you are a bit daring and handy) by a bolt through the firewall. Overall, I highly recommend this great used car, especially if you don't mind fixing the little things (like light bulbs and brake pads) every now and then. Those little quirks just give it character and personality!I've had lots of cars over the last 34 years, and I must say that the V70 is one of my favorites. It's dependable, roomy without being oversized, almost as useful as a pickup, has decent economy, is fun to drive and is a classic, instead of trying to be trendy. It finds the perfect balance between luxury, economy and practicality without compromising on safety. I am confident that it will last well beyond 300K, unless it gets hit by a semi.

This car is amazing! It has been through snow, rain, ice, and even the deserts of AZ without any issues. I once even drove it up a running river (not very deep) on a camping trip. It's so versatile that I can even fit my mountain bike in it if I fold the seats down, and I've even slept in it a few times. Although it can be a bit expensive to service, it's definitely worth it. Just make sure to stay up to date on your maintenance to avoid costly repairs.

One of the smoothest cars you'll ever own! The engine is barely noticeable when running, and the interior lights dim slowly when going out. The doors close with a quiet click and require little effort to operate. Braking is smooth, quiet, and gives a secure feeling when decelerating. When driving, the car has the feel of a sports car. The engine is more than adequate for all driving conditions, and the shifting of the automatic transmission is barely noticeable. This car is great and fun to drive!
