Volvo S60 2001 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.

The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.

The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.

The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

Based on complaints from owners of the Volvo S60 2001, several common problems have been reported:

  • Front Strut Mount Failure:
    • Another common problem reported is front strut mount failure. Owners have noted loud noises from the front end of the sedan when passing over bumps or traveling at high speeds. • Electronic Throttle Module Failure:

This failure is costly to fix, and when combined with other electrical problems like a dead A/C compressor and alarm siren module issues, maintenance costs can escalate significantly. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to emerging issues are crucial to keep the car running smoothly.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the Volvo S60 2001, emphasizing the importance of proactive maintenance and addressing symptoms promptly to avoid costly repairs and ensure a reliable driving experience.

THIS IS A CONCERN SINCE THE MESSAGES ARE INCORRECT ACCORDING TO WHAT THE DEALER TOLD ME AND HAVE SEEN SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I THINK THAT VOLVO SHOULD REPLACE ALL OF THE DIMS AND CEMS FOR EVERY CAR THAT EXHIBITS THIS PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME FOR VEHICLES UNDER 125,000 MILES. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AND IS A VERY BIG SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT THE CLUSTER HAS GONE DEAD. ALSO EACH TIME IT HAS BEEN RAINING AND THE DEALER HAS SAID THAT THERE ARE NO SHORTS IN THE SYSTEM. SOMETHING IS WRONG AND THEY ARE REPLACING EVERY PART WITHOUT FIXING THE ISSUE. *TR

Negative Volvo S60 2001 car reviews

  1. Kade Emard 2024-10-19

I recently had an experience with my Volvo that made me reflect on the company's structure. It's important to note that Volvo dealerships are independently owned franchises, meaning that Volvo does not have direct control over them. Unfortunately, I had a negative experience with a dealership called Bay Ridge Volvo - American Inc located in Brooklyn NY. After 110k miles, my s60 began experiencing engine idling problems. The BayRidgeVolvo dealer suggested changing all 6 injectors for $1600 and possibly the catalytic converter for $1000+, but could not guarantee that this would solve the issue. I decided to take my car to another shop, where they were able to fix the problem by changing the PCV valve for only $150. Prior to this, the Bay Ridge Volvo dealership attempted to fix the check engine light four times, charging me each time for something new. Although I had to fight to get my money back, I was not able to recover all of it.

If you're considering purchasing a Volvo S60, it's important to keep in mind that building a good relationship with the dealer service team can be beneficial. Unfortunately, I had to visit the service center frequently for various issues such as a slipping transmission, sun roof replacement, radio seek button malfunction, headlights/tail lights burning out, gas cover falling off, and a stuck key in the ignition. Despite these issues, the Volvo service team remained friendly and helpful throughout. It's possible that the recent acquisition of Volvo by Ford has led to some changes, but overall my experience was positive.

I started with a 122s, then a 240. Although I loved those cars, this particular Volvo has been a disappointment. From day 1, bulbs have been constantly burning out. At 30K, the dealer replaced the rear control arms, but since then we've had to replace another $2000 in suspension parts. Additionally, there have been problems with the air conditioner vents on hot days, as they close even though cold air is still present. Furthermore, the door lock system sometimes fails to lock the passenger door. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing another Volvo.

Although the '01 S60 may have a wonderful design and comfortable interior, it has unfortunately not held up well over time. The transmission has failed, the interior is falling apart, and the front suspension has required almost $4000 in repairs alone. It has become quite a financial burden and I am unable to sell it. In my experience, the BMW 5 series may be a better option. Thank you for considering my experience.

  5. Kadin Schneider 2024-03-28

This car had several issues, including bad sensors, a broken sunroof, a faulty transmission at 80000 miles, burnt out lights, and a shuttering engine, possibly due to a bad turbo charger. Despite these challenges, the car still managed to achieve decent gas mileage of 19 city and 28 highway.

Positive Volvo S60 2001 car reviews

  1. Dan Torp 2024-11-29

I really enjoy my car, especially since I started driving the S60 T5. It handles really well, even on ice, and has a lot of power. Although there have been some minor issues, like having to repair the CD player twice in 6 months, replacing a rod, and having an alignment issue, I still love it. The only thing I don't like is that there is no trunk release inside the car. Overall, it's a great ride and I'm happy with it despite its imperfections!

No wonder most people who buy a Volvo end up buying a few more in their lifetime. Your S60 has been a pleasure to drive overall. You've gone through two winters and several long trips and the S60 is an extremely nice place to be in on a long drive...with the best seats in the world!

  3. Chance Torp 2024-10-20

As a car enthusiast who has tested a variety of cars, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Lexus 300 (with a bland suspension), Infinity I35 (with tons of power but boring looks), Mercedes C320 (an inferior car), and the BMW 330i (with excellent road manners but a high price tag for similar options). However, I ultimately chose the S60 2.4T. Although some may consider the 2.4 to be a bit sluggish, I found the torque curve to be good and the lag to be reasonable. I opted for every available option except for the navigation system, as I did not find it to be worth the extra cost. The exterior of the S60 is truly awesome and much better than the other cars I considered. I highly recommend the 17-inch wheels, as they enhance the ride and look great.

I bought this car new in 2001 after having 3 Mercedes in a row. I absolutely love this Volvo! It has given me zero problems in 7 years, and I've only had to take it in for scheduled oil changes, etc. I decided to buy this car after I was in a serious accident with my husband's Volvo Wagon on a trip. The car flipped and rolled down a ravine, but I was able to open the door and walk away. I wanted that feeling of safety for myself, and this car has not disappointed me.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car! It sounds like it's been a great fit for you, with its comfortable ride and sporty handling. And it's always a bonus to get positive feedback from passengers, especially when they comment on the amazing seats and the car's impressive acceleration!
