Common Volvo Cross country problems

The Volvo Cross Country cars, including the V60 and V90, are well-regarded for their safety, technology, performance, interior, comfort, and reliability. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported, primarily related to software issues, suspension, and airbag deployment.

Software issues have affected both the V60 and V90 models. For instance, there was a problem with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision, which affected cars constructed between 23 September 2016 and 30 October 2018 for the V90 and between 26 September 2018 and 30 October 2018 for the V60. This issue was resolved with a software update performed by any Volvo dealer.

Another software-related problem is with the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system, which might not actually apply the brakes when the forward collision sensors detect an imminent collision. This issue affects V60, S90, V90, XC40, XC60, and XC90 models built after 21 January 2019. A software update is required to fix this problem, and it can be completed by any Volvo dealer.

In terms of suspension, there have been reports of loose nuts and screws on the rear suspension of V60s made between 25 September 2018 and 1 April 2019. If your car is affected, contact your local dealer, as they will be able to check the bolts for tightness and replace them if necessary.

Airbag deployment is another area where Volvo Cross Country cars have experienced issues. There have been recalls for airbags that might not deploy correctly during a collision due to airbags that don't meet the required specification and were fitted to models produced between 24 March 2016 and 30 October 2018.

The V90 has also had issues with the installation of a part of the supplementary restrain system, which could affect V60s made between 10-22 September 2020. If your car is affected, it will need to be checked over by a technician at a Volvo dealer.

While these problems may seem concerning, it is essential to note that Volvo, as a brand, ranked ninth out of 32 manufacturers in terms of reliability, with an overall reliability score of 93.7%.

In summary, while Volvo Cross Country cars, such as the V60 and V90, have experienced some common problems related to software issues, suspension, and airbag deployment, the brand as a whole has a strong reliability record. If you are considering purchasing a used Volvo Cross Country, it is essential to be aware of these issues and ensure that any necessary recalls or software updates have been addressed by a Volvo dealer.

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-26
  • Date Complaint: 2012-06-26
  • VIN: YV1SZ58D811
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I CAME TO A STOP IN HEAVY INTERSTATE TRAFFIC (35E NORTH IN ST. PAUL). JUST AS THE CAR WAS ALMOST STOPPED, IT REVVED-UP/SURGED FORWARD. I WAS AFRAID THAT THE BRAKE WOULD NOT HOLD AND WE WOULD HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. THREE YOUNG GIRLS WERE IN THE CAR WITH ME. THE CAR HAS BEEN CLUNKING INTO GEAR AT LOW SPEEDS LATELY, HESITATING FROM A COLD START, ALMOST CUTTING OUT WHEN IDLING AT STOP LIGHTS AND THEN REVVING UP ONLY TO START THE CYCLE OVER AGAIN. NONE OF THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHER SPEEDS. ALSO TODAY, WHEN I PUT IT INTO DRIVE, IT SURGED FORWARD IMMEDIATELY AND I HAD TO PUSH MY FOOT VERY HARD ON THE BRAKE. I AM SCARED OF THIS CAR. I ALREADY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AT 86,000 MILES. NOW THE SECOND TRANSMISSION ONLY HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS A FATALITY WAITING TO HAPPEN. THIS TRANSMISSION IS CRIMINAL. *JB

  • Date Complaint: 2009-08-19
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: VOLVO XC 70 2001. WOULD JUST DISENGAGE AS IN NEUTRAL, ENGINE WOULD ROAR. VOLVO DEALER ADVISED TO GET TO A LOCAL MECHANIC SINCE I'M 90 MILES AWAY FROM DEALERSHIP. MECHANIC SAID TRANSMISSION FLUID COMPLETELY BURNT UP, CHANGED. TOOK TO VOLVO 8/8/09, CHECKED IT OUT, EVERYTHING WAS FINE. OFFERED A SOFTWARE UPGRADE FOR $72. 8/10/09 DID THE SAME THING, LOCAL MECHANIC SAID BURNT WORSE THAN THE FIRST AND CHANGED AGAIN. DRIVING BACK TO FT. COLLINS, STALLED ON THE INTERSTATE, HAD TO CALL A TOW TRACK. UPON INVESTIGATION THERE ARE TONS OF POSTS ON THE INTERNET WITH THIS PROBLEM, AND NOTICES IN TRANSMISSION SHOPS. LIVING 90 MILES AWAY I TOOK MY CAR TO VOLVO FOR SERVICE MORE THAN NECESSARY. THEY TOLD ME THEY NEVER CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND HAVE NO GUIDELINES (CONTRARY TO EVERYTHING ELSE I READ, FROM 30K TO 75K). I HAD A 90K TUNE UP 12/08 & WENT IN 6/09 FOR LUBE SERVICE. IF THESE '01 CARS ARE THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS, WHY DIDN'T VOLVO MENTION IT, CHANGE THE FLUID, MENTION THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE? *TR

THAT IS THE END OF THE SCREW WHICH SERVES TO PULL THE SISSORS TOGETHER WHILE PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE SISSORS AT THE OTHER END OF THE JACK BY THE ROTATION OF THE SCREW IN THE THREADED SLIDER AT THE CRANK END OF THE SISSORS. IT FAILED CATASTROPHIC WAY WITH A BIG BANG, THE CAR DROPPED ONTO THE FLAT TIRE, AND LUCKILY I WAS NOT HURT. IT WOULD APPERAR THAT THE JACK IS A HAZZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPLACED.*AK
