Common Volvo Xc60 problems
The Volvo XC60 is a luxury compact crossover that has been one of the best-selling models for the car manufacturer. However, there are some common problems and issues with the XC60 that are worth considering.
One of the most common issues with the XC60 is related to its Android Automotive OS-based infotainment system, which was introduced in the 2022 models. Early versions of the XC60’s Android Automotive system seem to have numerous problems. Some of the complaints from 2022 XC60 owners include infotainment screen and dashboard constantly restarting, lack of Apple CarPlay (fixed in software version 2.2), incompatible apps such as Sirius XM and RADIO.COM, problems with voice commands and Google Assistant, Bluetooth disconnections and other connectivity problems, failed Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and bricked cars, and Telematics and Connectivity Antenna Module (TCAM) failures.
Another common problem affecting first-generation XC60s is a leaking brake vacuum pump once the vehicle reaches a certain mileage. Many new XC60 owners have also reported various brake problems, including a soft brake pedal feel, squeaking or groaning brake noises, warped or needing replacement brake rotors at low mileage, and automatic braking system activating for no reason.
Oil consumption is not unusual in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, as more leaks start to appear and the engine components wear out. If your vehicle is losing or burning oil in between oil changes, there might be a problem with the engine itself. The easiest way to check this is to look for leaks, and if you can’t find any, take the car to a Volvo mechanic for an oil consumption test. They’ll try to replace smaller parts like the oil trap, but if that doesn’t work, you might need an engine rebuild, which can be costly.
Some XC60 owners have reported strange vibrations when travelling at speeds between 40 to 60 miles per hour. This issue doesn’t affect all XC60s, but it can be difficult to track down the cause once it starts happening. The most common cause of this issue is the foam insert inside the tyre coming loose. Replacing the affected tyre, or all four, should resolve the problem. However, if the tyres and wheels have been checked and are in good condition, there might be a mechanical problem with the car.
Other common problems with the XC60 include SatNav loading issue, poor engine performance, loose seat belt anchor cable, power steering failure, fuel leaks, AC failing, automatic boot switch failure, loss of power/engine management warning light, and lane departure problems.
In conclusion, while the Volvo XC60 is a great luxury SUV, it is prone to some issues. By being aware of the most common problems and knowing what to do to resolve them, you can keep your XC60 running smoothly for years to come. If you’re facing any of these issues, it’s always best to consult a professional mechanic for a proper diagnosis and resolution.

Volvo Xc60 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-17
- VIN: YV4612RK1F2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Volvo mechanics claim the engine seized due to alternator pulley failure, however, at the time of the event, the engine showed no oil on the dipstick despite having added multiple quarts of oil over the last three months. Volvo has issued an extended warranty letter to customers due to excessive oil consumption, but Volvo failed to provide this letter for this vehicle. I’ve checked Volvo databases for engines matching this extended warranty and confirmed the engine is in fact covered under this extended warranty. Due to Volvo’s failure to communicate this problem, my daughter continued to drive this vehicle until it completely lost power in high speed traffic on I-95 nearly causing an accident and stranding her on the side of the interstate for several hours. Upon arriving at the cite of this incident, I notice there was no low oil warning light illuminated on the dash, so I double checked oil dipstick and added at least two quarts of oil. Unfortunately the engine had already seized at this point and the vehicle was inoperable.

- Date Complaint: 2024-08-11
- VIN: YV4902DZ1E2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: When I purchased my 2014 Volvo XC 60 I was told that it was in good overall condition and believe that after driving it for the vehicle in full and brought it back because it needed a current inspection. Within four days of taking it home after the inspection, the PCV valve went bad and I had a minor leak in the middle center top of the windshield that dripped in and left watermarks on my headliner. So again I called the dealer and explained to them what was going on. I took it back they corrected the PCV valve and said that they had my windshield Repaired and sealed by a professional windshield installer. Once again, I picked up my new car and I went home with it. The first rainstorm we got the inside of my car was flooded to the point where it shorted out my sunroof switch so now I can use my sunroof and there is mildew smell all through my car , floorboard on the driver side side gets soaked along with everything else from about the center all the way to the left and down the side of the windshield I feel that more than half of that windshield is not secured properly in there and sealed and could lead to serious injury to myself or possibly Someone else. I have reached out to them several times And after I picked it up when they stated everything was fixed and good to go, it was nothing but a nightmare my Car has a massive leaking windshield around more than 50% of it at least. I contacted the auto dealer once again and explained what was going on and how severe the situation had become. The service manager assured me that they work on the windshield was guaranteed and under warranty and he had a switch on hand to Replace my control switch for my sunroof and that he would contact their windshield guy and get him back there to make it right at no cost to me. In addition he said he would also supply me the loaner so I would not be without a car until mine was definitely fixed and ready, that was the last I heard from them and that was almost 3 weeks ago
Volvo Xc60 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-08
- VIN: YV4952DZXD2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The component or system that failed is the driver side door controls for all four windows and both side mirrors. My safety is at risk as I am unable to adjust my mirrors manually or electronically in order to see. I am also unable to roll down any of the windows in the vehicle from the driver door in the event of an emergency. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Volvo service center. According to my local Volvo service center, this is a common problem in Volvos and they are very familiar with the repair needed to correct. The problem is that the driver door wiring is zip-tied together and over time, as the driver door opens and closes, the zip tie chafes the insulation off of the wiring causing the copper part of the wires to be exposed and twisted together. There are no warning lights reporting this issue, only that the window and mirror controls stop working. The following video link between 9:38-12:16 explains this issue in Volvos. I am writing to advocate for a vehicle recall. I believe this is a manufacturing flaw which could have been avoided by simply using electrical tape and not a zip tie. The repair has been quoted at $800. Driver side door entry is an essential function and should not be a cause for an electrical fire or drivers’ and passengers’ safety. Volvo Xc60 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-06-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV4960DL3A2
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While slowing down and just about to make a turn into a private residence off of a highway, multiple indicator lights illuminated and audio warning "dinging" occurred for approximately 3 seconds. As I had already been slowly applying the brakes and starting to slightly turn the wheel towards the driveway when those warnings briefly came up, the moment the lights and sounds stopped, vehicle then maintained speed (while still on the brakes) and locked steering position it was at simultaneously. Having no control at that point, it continued until crashing into a wooden fence. Once at a complete stop, cabin lights and "dinging" activated as it acknowledged the impact. And although it was only going about 15 mph, seemingly to only have damage to the front passenger side bumper/headlight area, it would not shift into any gear or turn off. Not to mention that the front passenger side airbag(s), or any of them, deploy- seriously raised even more concerns as the main reason I purchased a Volvo was for their well known status of safety standards. Had this obvious electrical malfunction happened moments before at higher speed/steering straight ahead, it would've resulted in very serious injuries to myself and others while it speed through 2 intersections at a highway ramp just down the hill. Was towed to a local collision repair & auto body shop until Progressive Insurance took it to their damage assessor where it was declared a total loss. I've owned it for almost 3 years and always had weird inconsistent electrical "quirks"- nothing ever of serious concern though. Has spent a total of 4-5 months in the past 3 years at different Volvo dealerships and mechanics but no one could ever explain why different warnings would be displayed randomly for days-weeks, off/on for no apparent diagnostic reason, 12V power socket was the same way... Please investigate the electrical components that directly affect the operational use and control! Extremely common & dangerous issue with these!

- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-05-08
- VIN: YV4992DZ6A2
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: After it rains, i've noticed water collecting in both the passenger and driver side footbeds. It started off nominally and I was easily able to use a cloth. I thought it might have been human error, that I left the window cracked open a bit. The most recent incident (this past weekend 5/4/24) there was a significant puddle on the driver's side. After further research, I discovered the culprit is likely an unbonded windshield, and that this is a KNOWN issue for Volvos, but especially for (2010) xc60s. Having an unbonded windshield seems like a significant hazard risk as the structural integrity of the entire windshield is compromised, as well as risk of electrical components getting wet as the water leaks through the car (and the ripple effects of that).

- Summary: Vehicle failed to start after short trip (<5 miles) with no electrical power present. Jump started from another car after approximately 1/2 hour. Drove car to home, car stalled in driveway again with no electrical power. Replaced 5 year old battery car started fine then stalled on road during test drive while approaching an intersection and suffered loss of all electrical power including inoperative hazard flashers. Transmission went into park and car could not be moved out of active traffic lane. Car towed to repair shop where cracked fuse at positive battery terminal found (see photos attached). Repair shop contacted a Volvo dealer and was informed they typically see a couple vehicles a week for same issue.

- Summary: The support battery for start/stop started to show on the dash and tells me that service is required about 2 weeks ago. "THE LOCATION OF THE BATTERY IS MY CONCERN". A month ago, the air coming out from the vent of the ac/heater started to smell like a rotten egg, a very strong smell that gives me a headache and makes me dizzy. This smell comes and go.I had to open the windows and switch to recycled air, this helps a little bit. I brought my Volvo to 2 shops about 3 weeks ago before I went to the dealer on Feb 16, 2024. The first shop smelled it and said they checked the catalytic converter and run a diagnostics and emission and they said emission is very good and there is no problem with the catalytic converter and suggested to bring it to the dealer. They said it could be coming from the battery and I told them that the battery is new and main battery has a box casing so the strong smell is definitely not coming from the main battery. I didn't know that there was another battery. I brought it to an exhaust shop and said the same thing, no leaks in the pipe and catalytic converter and smoke coming from the exhaust looks normal and smells normal. Next I brought it to the dealer and they did nothing and simply stated they could not duplicate the problem. I had no choice but to do an extensive research to find out where the location of the support battery so I can change it myself. I always wondered why the smell is so strong in the passenger side intake screen cover of the cowling. I couldn't believe where Volvo had placed the second battery/support battery. It was on the passenger side, right next to the air intake for the AC/heat of the car and is covered by the cowling between the windshield and the engine. Harmful gases that can potentially come out from the battery is directly suck in to the intake of the car's air conditioner.

Vehicle year: 2018
This XC60 has been a great purchase so far! It comes with T5 momentum with navigationPro, Vision Package, Heated seats/steering wheel, keyless entry, and base 18 inch wheels. With 2200 miles on it, I've been getting 25.5 mpg in a mix of town and highway driving. The base engine and 8-speed transmission are more than adequate for both highway and stop-and-go traffic. The base interior is significantly upscale compared to our 2011 XC60 T6, and the ride is comfortable, although maybe not as playful/connected to the road as our 2014 X3 2.8. In my opinion, the XC60 wins in overall comfort. Although I initially liked the lane keeping feature, I now find it annoying as the car fights with you if you change lanes without signaling. Luckily, it can be deactivated and left off. Unfortunately, the start/stop feature needs to be deactivated every time the car is started, requiring a couple of extra swipes of the center screen that can get old. The leading edge of the sunroof sun screen buzzes, but it can be addressed by rolling it back a cm or so. It took me a while to figure out how to enable the traffic flow status, green/orange/red colors, by activating the car modem in the communication menu. Sometimes the center screen menus can be a bit slow to boot up when the car is started, but overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2020 XC60 Momentum T6 through the Volvo overseas delivery program! We highly recommend this method of purchase as it saved us around $11k over the dealer sticker price. Although we had to wait a few months for delivery, it was worth it as the car arrived with only the extras we selected, without any unnecessary additions to inflate the price. The exterior styling is absolutely gorgeous, and we love the unique and beautiful denim blue paint color. The interior is also stunning, with perfect fit and finish, although it feels a bit tight. The leather seats are very comfortable and the car is well insulated from exterior sound. The ride is a bit stiff, as expected from an SUV, but it holds body roll to a minimum in corners. The engine is incredibly responsive and impressive at any rpm range, accelerating quickly. The 8-speed transmission with true overdrive gear shifts very smoothly and at logical points. The center display and computer-operated controls take some studying to learn, but we would prefer knobs/dials for easier operation. The center console storage compartment is located behind the driver's right arm, which can be a bit hard to access. The seat belt attachment to secure the belt is a bit too low and should have been extended by about 3 inches. The brake pedal feels a bit soft and takes some pressing to engage, but the car has big disk brakes. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase and would highly recommend the Volvo overseas delivery program to anyone looking for a great deal on a beautiful car.

Vehicle year: 2019
When searching for a new car to replace my 9-year-old Audi A4 3.2L Prestige S-Line, I considered many vehicles from different brands such as Audi, Mercedes, Mazda, VW, and Honda. After months of research, I finally decided on the Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design. We ordered the car in February of this year as a 2018 model year, but the 2019 model was delivered 4 months later. Thanks to Volvo, the dealership held the 2018 agreed price on the more heavily featured 2019 model. Although we strongly considered the T8 (hybrid) version, we ultimately rejected it because the new car is intended for highway trips and the additional 500lbs or so would hinder highway fuel mileage. With only 1500 miles on the R-Design, it has exceeded my expectations. It is a comfortable and quiet highway cruiser that provides a safe, serene, solid, and even sporty-ish driving experience. Learning the new tech and interface in the center console takes a bit of homework, but once the preferences are set and the short learning curve is attained, controls seem logical and well laid-out. Steering wheel controls and voice commands handle the majority of routine functions such as radio/music selection and volume, cabin temperature, text message response, automatic cruise control, Pilot Assist, etc.) Favorite features so far include the auto-cruise control, head-up display, Bowers & Wilkins audio system, fuel economy, comfortable R-Design seats, and general driving dynamics. I do have a few nit-picky dislikes, such as the lack of a sunglasses holder in an overhead bin, and the somewhat unpleasant engine sound under moderately hard acceleration (although cruising noise is virtually silent). Also, I miss having a CD player (yes, I'm showing my age, but I have a lot of CDs).UPDATE: FOURTEEN MONTHS LATERThe XC60 continues to exceed my expectations. After several 600 mile round trips, puttering around town, and a total of 18,600 miles on the odometer, there are ZERO mechanical, electrical, interface, or infotainment issues. None. The R-Design has had one oil change service and software update (neither of which cost me anything) and another service is due in a couple of weeks. The engine has not used any oil in the roughly 9000 miles of use since the last oil change. The A/C system is terrific, cooling the interior quickly in these hot summer months. All the safety systems continue to function as advertised and impress my occasional work mate passengers. Interstate cruising is quiet, relaxing, and unstressful. Certainly the driver still needs to monitor the road and input steering as required, but the automatic cruise control and lane keeping systems help the miles melt by. Fuel mileage also continues in the upper 27-28 mpg range at interstate cruising speeds (70-75 mph), and strictly around town driving yields low 20s mpg. We continue to appreciate the very comfortable seats, excellent Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and roomy interior. The XC60 is the optimum size for us and our travel and commuting needs. Because this is my first experience, much less, my first ownership of a Volvo product, I was very skeptical. However, the vehicle has won me over and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. After living with it for nearly 18 months, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design! Even after almost three years and nearly 40k miles of ownership, the XC60 is still performing exceptionally well and providing excellent service. I have zero complaints or areas of concern, and there's even a trace of new-car-smell lingering. Although the free maintenance period is over, the last scheduled service was handled quickly and reasonably by the top-notch tech team at the dealership. I would highly recommend this Volvo to anyone looking for solid, reliable, efficient, and stylish transportation.

This is definitely one of those cars that will increase in value over time. I don't like to exaggerate, but they just don't make cars like this anymore. It's heavy, fast, safe, and comfortable, with no squeaks or sounds. The V6 gets 26 MPG on the highway, and the seats are so comfortable that I wish I had them in my home theater. The AWD is great, even in heavy rain, and it gives me confidence. The NAV isn't great, but I use my cell phone for that anyway if I get lost. In fact, for my next car, I may not even get NAV, so that doesn't bother me. We even tow a small boat with this SUV, and you can't even tell it's there. If you find this SUV from someone who took care of it and kept the fluids changed, buy it! I've spent less than $400 on parts for this car, including batteries, cabin filters, etc., in just a few years. You can't beat that. Thank you!

Safety is the most important factor, followed by comfort, reliability, luxury, and style, all in a reasonably priced package. And the best part? The repair work doesn't cost a fortune! I have been a loyal Volvo customer for years, and the XC60 is the perfect fit for our lifestyle. Plus, our furry friend loves it too!

I have owned more than 10 Volvo's and have always loved them. However, my new 2022 B5 AWD has been in the shop for 3 weeks due to a communication issue that has affected all infotainment features. Despite this setback, I am confident that the dealer will be able to resolve the issue and get my car back on the road soon.

I brought my car in 7 times to address a severe engine vibration that caused the cabin to shake.

The ride is great, just as one would expect from a vehicle of this caliber. However, some features are difficult to use or nonfunctional. The plug-in feature works about 80% of the time, but occasionally displays a 'preparing to charge' message. Additionally, it's disappointing that AM radio is not included and an extra app must be purchased for radio functionality. While the apps work most of the time, there have been a few instances where they did not. On two occasions, the car would not turn off unless I left it and locked and unlocked it. Overall, this is not the Volvo that we used to know, but it still has its merits.

The XC60 is an excellent choice for families who value both safety and affordability. With ample cargo space, it's perfect for pet owners like myself. The car seamlessly combines form and safety, providing both comfort and zippy performance on the highway. The smooth power throughout all stages of driving, including highway and local, makes it a joy to drive. Despite considering other SUVs, we ultimately chose the XC60 for its exceptional value, even when compared to other well-equipped models priced in the mid-30s and above.

I recently had an issue with my car that I feel compelled to share. While I love my car, I did experience a concerning problem with the information system. Unfortunately, the absence of 'apple car play' was a bit embarrassing. Despite this, I still found the car to be beautiful and it drove nicely until it suddenly stopped starting. One night, the car was trying to update its software and I followed the instructions to let it perform the update. However, the next morning, I received an email from Volvo indicating that the update had failed and the car wouldn't start. I couldn't even lock the door from outside. The car was completely dead with an alert indicator on the dashboard. After 12 hours of waiting for a tow truck, the car was finally towed to Volvo. Although it took two days to fix, I was relieved to hear that it was ready for pickup. While I'm not sure what caused the problem, I'm concerned that this issue seems to be affecting other XC60 owners globally. It's a huge deal, especially for a brand-new car. Although Volvo used to be more dependable, I'm not sure if I can say the same anymore.
