Common Volvo Xc60 problems
The Volvo XC60 is a luxury compact crossover that has been one of the best-selling models for the car manufacturer. However, there are some common problems and issues with the XC60 that are worth considering.
One of the most common issues with the XC60 is related to its Android Automotive OS-based infotainment system, which was introduced in the 2022 models. Early versions of the XC60’s Android Automotive system seem to have numerous problems. Some of the complaints from 2022 XC60 owners include infotainment screen and dashboard constantly restarting, lack of Apple CarPlay (fixed in software version 2.2), incompatible apps such as Sirius XM and RADIO.COM, problems with voice commands and Google Assistant, Bluetooth disconnections and other connectivity problems, failed Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and bricked cars, and Telematics and Connectivity Antenna Module (TCAM) failures.
Another common problem affecting first-generation XC60s is a leaking brake vacuum pump once the vehicle reaches a certain mileage. Many new XC60 owners have also reported various brake problems, including a soft brake pedal feel, squeaking or groaning brake noises, warped or needing replacement brake rotors at low mileage, and automatic braking system activating for no reason.
Oil consumption is not unusual in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, as more leaks start to appear and the engine components wear out. If your vehicle is losing or burning oil in between oil changes, there might be a problem with the engine itself. The easiest way to check this is to look for leaks, and if you can’t find any, take the car to a Volvo mechanic for an oil consumption test. They’ll try to replace smaller parts like the oil trap, but if that doesn’t work, you might need an engine rebuild, which can be costly.
Some XC60 owners have reported strange vibrations when travelling at speeds between 40 to 60 miles per hour. This issue doesn’t affect all XC60s, but it can be difficult to track down the cause once it starts happening. The most common cause of this issue is the foam insert inside the tyre coming loose. Replacing the affected tyre, or all four, should resolve the problem. However, if the tyres and wheels have been checked and are in good condition, there might be a mechanical problem with the car.
Other common problems with the XC60 include SatNav loading issue, poor engine performance, loose seat belt anchor cable, power steering failure, fuel leaks, AC failing, automatic boot switch failure, loss of power/engine management warning light, and lane departure problems.
In conclusion, while the Volvo XC60 is a great luxury SUV, it is prone to some issues. By being aware of the most common problems and knowing what to do to resolve them, you can keep your XC60 running smoothly for years to come. If you’re facing any of these issues, it’s always best to consult a professional mechanic for a proper diagnosis and resolution.

Volvo Xc60 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-17
- VIN: YV4612RK1F2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Volvo mechanics claim the engine seized due to alternator pulley failure, however, at the time of the event, the engine showed no oil on the dipstick despite having added multiple quarts of oil over the last three months. Volvo has issued an extended warranty letter to customers due to excessive oil consumption, but Volvo failed to provide this letter for this vehicle. I’ve checked Volvo databases for engines matching this extended warranty and confirmed the engine is in fact covered under this extended warranty. Due to Volvo’s failure to communicate this problem, my daughter continued to drive this vehicle until it completely lost power in high speed traffic on I-95 nearly causing an accident and stranding her on the side of the interstate for several hours. Upon arriving at the cite of this incident, I notice there was no low oil warning light illuminated on the dash, so I double checked oil dipstick and added at least two quarts of oil. Unfortunately the engine had already seized at this point and the vehicle was inoperable.

- VIN: YV4902DZ1E2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: When I purchased my 2014 Volvo XC 60 I was told that it was in good overall condition and believe that after driving it for the vehicle in full and brought it back because it needed a current inspection. Within four days of taking it home after the inspection, the PCV valve went bad and I had a minor leak in the middle center top of the windshield that dripped in and left watermarks on my headliner. So again I called the dealer and explained to them what was going on. I took it back they corrected the PCV valve and said that they had my windshield Repaired and sealed by a professional windshield installer. Once again, I picked up my new car and I went home with it. The first rainstorm we got the inside of my car was flooded to the point where it shorted out my sunroof switch so now I can use my sunroof and there is mildew smell all through my car , floorboard on the driver side side gets soaked along with everything else from about the center all the way to the left and down the side of the windshield I feel that more than half of that windshield is not secured properly in there and sealed and could lead to serious injury to myself or possibly Someone else. I have reached out to them several times And after I picked it up when they stated everything was fixed and good to go, it was nothing but a nightmare my Car has a massive leaking windshield around more than 50% of it at least. I contacted the auto dealer once again and explained what was going on and how severe the situation had become. The service manager assured me that they work on the windshield was guaranteed and under warranty and he had a switch on hand to Replace my control switch for my sunroof and that he would contact their windshield guy and get him back there to make it right at no cost to me. In addition he said he would also supply me the loaner so I would not be without a car until mine was definitely fixed and ready, that was the last I heard from them and that was almost 3 weeks ago
Volvo Xc60 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-08
- VIN: YV4952DZXD2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The component or system that failed is the driver side door controls for all four windows and both side mirrors. My safety is at risk as I am unable to adjust my mirrors manually or electronically in order to see. I am also unable to roll down any of the windows in the vehicle from the driver door in the event of an emergency. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Volvo service center. According to my local Volvo service center, this is a common problem in Volvos and they are very familiar with the repair needed to correct. The problem is that the driver door wiring is zip-tied together and over time, as the driver door opens and closes, the zip tie chafes the insulation off of the wiring causing the copper part of the wires to be exposed and twisted together. There are no warning lights reporting this issue, only that the window and mirror controls stop working. The following video link between 9:38-12:16 explains this issue in Volvos. I am writing to advocate for a vehicle recall. I believe this is a manufacturing flaw which could have been avoided by simply using electrical tape and not a zip tie. The repair has been quoted at $800. Driver side door entry is an essential function and should not be a cause for an electrical fire or drivers’ and passengers’ safety. - Date Complaint: 2024-06-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV4960DL3A2
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While slowing down and just about to make a turn into a private residence off of a highway, multiple indicator lights illuminated and audio warning "dinging" occurred for approximately 3 seconds. As I had already been slowly applying the brakes and starting to slightly turn the wheel towards the driveway when those warnings briefly came up, the moment the lights and sounds stopped, vehicle then maintained speed (while still on the brakes) and locked steering position it was at simultaneously. Having no control at that point, it continued until crashing into a wooden fence. Once at a complete stop, cabin lights and "dinging" activated as it acknowledged the impact. And although it was only going about 15 mph, seemingly to only have damage to the front passenger side bumper/headlight area, it would not shift into any gear or turn off. Not to mention that the front passenger side airbag(s), or any of them, deploy- seriously raised even more concerns as the main reason I purchased a Volvo was for their well known status of safety standards. Had this obvious electrical malfunction happened moments before at higher speed/steering straight ahead, it would've resulted in very serious injuries to myself and others while it speed through 2 intersections at a highway ramp just down the hill. Was towed to a local collision repair & auto body shop until Progressive Insurance took it to their damage assessor where it was declared a total loss. I've owned it for almost 3 years and always had weird inconsistent electrical "quirks"- nothing ever of serious concern though. Has spent a total of 4-5 months in the past 3 years at different Volvo dealerships and mechanics but no one could ever explain why different warnings would be displayed randomly for days-weeks, off/on for no apparent diagnostic reason, 12V power socket was the same way... Please investigate the electrical components that directly affect the operational use and control! Extremely common & dangerous issue with these!

- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-05-08
- VIN: YV4992DZ6A2
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: After it rains, i've noticed water collecting in both the passenger and driver side footbeds. It started off nominally and I was easily able to use a cloth. I thought it might have been human error, that I left the window cracked open a bit. The most recent incident (this past weekend 5/4/24) there was a significant puddle on the driver's side. After further research, I discovered the culprit is likely an unbonded windshield, and that this is a KNOWN issue for Volvos, but especially for (2010) xc60s. Having an unbonded windshield seems like a significant hazard risk as the structural integrity of the entire windshield is compromised, as well as risk of electrical components getting wet as the water leaks through the car (and the ripple effects of that).

Drove car to home, car stalled in driveway again with no electrical power. Replaced 5 year old battery car started fine then stalled on road during test drive while approaching an intersection and suffered loss of all electrical power including inoperative hazard flashers. Transmission went into park and car could not be moved out of active traffic lane. Car towed to repair shop where cracked fuse at positive battery terminal found (see photos attached). Repair shop contacted a Volvo dealer and was informed they typically see a couple vehicles a week for same issue.

- Summary: The support battery for start/stop started to show on the dash and tells me that service is required about 2 weeks ago. "THE LOCATION OF THE BATTERY IS MY CONCERN". A month ago, the air coming out from the vent of the ac/heater started to smell like a rotten egg, a very strong smell that gives me a headache and makes me dizzy. This smell comes and go.I had to open the windows and switch to recycled air, this helps a little bit. I brought my Volvo to 2 shops about 3 weeks ago before I went to the dealer on Feb 16, 2024. The first shop smelled it and said they checked the catalytic converter and run a diagnostics and emission and they said emission is very good and there is no problem with the catalytic converter and suggested to bring it to the dealer. They said it could be coming from the battery and I told them that the battery is new and main battery has a box casing so the strong smell is definitely not coming from the main battery. I didn't know that there was another battery. I brought it to an exhaust shop and said the same thing, no leaks in the pipe and catalytic converter and smoke coming from the exhaust looks normal and smells normal. Next I brought it to the dealer and they did nothing and simply stated they could not duplicate the problem. I had no choice but to do an extensive research to find out where the location of the support battery so I can change it myself. I always wondered why the smell is so strong in the passenger side intake screen cover of the cowling. I couldn't believe where Volvo had placed the second battery/support battery. It was on the passenger side, right next to the air intake for the AC/heat of the car and is covered by the cowling between the windshield and the engine. Harmful gases that can potentially come out from the battery is directly suck in to the intake of the car's air conditioner.

Congratulations on your new XC 60 AWD with the new Drive-E T6 engine! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. I can tell that you are really impressed with the engine/transmission combination, and it's great to hear that you had such a positive experience driving it. The acceleration sounds amazing, especially in sport mode. It's also good to know that the ride quality is very nice and that you find it to be a better value for the money than the X3 and Q5. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The Volvo XC60 T6 is, in my opinion, the best small luxury class SUV. While most car reviewers put the Audi Q5 over the XC60, having owned a 2011 Q5, I can tell you that they are wrong. The XC60 has plenty of cargo space and the seats are the most comfortable I have ever been in. The performance of the T6 model is top-notch. I have been averaging 25 miles per gallon to and from work (combined) and 28 on the highway (and I am not holding back).

This car is one of the best when comparing price, luxury brands, as well as performance. I leased a 2016 Volvo XC 60 T-6 AWD for my company and I must say, it definitely doesn't lack in performance. The shifting is smooth, there's no lag in power, and it's fast - around 6.5 seconds from 0-60. The interior has a lot of room for all the passengers and gear, especially for going out of town. While the handling could use a little bit of work, it meets my expectations for the size and height of the vehicle. Compared to my previous Audi Q5 and Mercedes ML, the Volvo is an excellent car.

Vehicle year: 2019
11/21 update - Hey there! We're almost at 20,000 miles in our XC60 and I have to say, it's been an amazing ride so far! Not only is it comfortable and stylish, but it's also been super reliable. I absolutely adore Volvo's current designs - the XC60 and XC90 have both aged like fine wine. They're beautiful vehicles inside and out that were ahead of their time. Plus, Volvos feel solid as a rock. The door shuts with a confident thud that nearly feels like you're getting in an armored car. Other than regular service and a small evap hose leak that triggered the check engine light (replaced under warranty), our XC60 has been perfect. Even the infotainment has grown on me, though it does take some learning. My only concern with the XC60 is space. While it beats competitors like the Q5 and GLC, we're about to become a family of three that always brings our two dogs along. When it's just my wife and I, we can fill up this car pretty easily so we're considering trading up for the XC90. My wife fell in love with the styling of the newer Volvos and originally wanted the smaller XC40. The XC60 is just much more practical. I, too, fell in love with the design - particularly the LED daytime running lights and great interior. To me, the interior is class-leading and unlike anything I've seen another automaker attempt perhaps except for Tesla. However, I will say that function clearly took a backseat to the modern, minimalist interior design. I'm in my 30s and very tech-savvy and I can't imagine anyone over 50 operating this car without a lot of frustration. Essentially all of the controls are operated via the touchscreen interface. I don't personally have an issue with this but Volvo sorely needs to improve the user experience of their infotainment. It can be a lot of swiping and tapping to make even a simple AC adjustment. Plus, it can be slow to boot up when you start the car. The infotainment does have some upsides - crisp graphics, very clear back-up camera, etc.My other vehicle is a Jeep with Chrysler's excellent UConnect system, and I must admit, it's embarrassing how much more intuitive and responsive Chrysler's system is. However, the XC60 is still a beautiful car, and I do love it despite a few complaints. The T5 turbo-charged four cylinder is perfectly suited for this size vehicle, and I believe getting the T6 would be overkill. The exterior styling is elegant but not overdone, and the interior is top quality on every surface you touch. Although there are a few design choices that prioritize form over function, such as the placement of the old-school shifter and ignition switch in the center console, these things become more apparent as you spend time with the vehicle. I think Volvo is heading toward electrification, but a 6 cylinder is badly needed in their line-up. With some improvements in function, I believe this SUV would be an absolute home run.

Vehicle year: 2020
When searching for a new car to replace my 9-year-old Audi A4 3.2L Prestige S-Line, I considered many vehicles from different brands such as Audi, Mercedes, Mazda, VW, and Honda. After months of research, I finally decided on the Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design. We ordered the car in February of this year as a 2018 model year, but the 2019 model was delivered 4 months later. Thanks to Volvo, the dealership held the 2018 agreed price on the more heavily featured 2019 model. Although we strongly considered the T8 (hybrid) version, we ultimately rejected it because the new car is intended for highway trips and the additional 500lbs or so would hinder highway fuel mileage. With only 1500 miles on the R-Design, it has proven to be everything I had hoped it would be. It is a superbly comfortable and quiet highway cruiser that provides a safe, serene, solid, and even sporty-ish driving experience. Learning the new tech and interface in the center console takes a bit of homework, but once the preferences are set and the short learning curve is attained, controls seem logical and well laid-out. Steering wheel controls and voice commands handle the majority of routine functions such as radio/music selection and volume, cabin temperature, text message response, automatic cruise control, and Pilot Assist.) Favorite features so far include the auto-cruise control, head-up display, Bowers & Wilkins audio system, fuel economy, comfortable R-Design seats, and general driving dynamics. I do have a few nit-picky dislikes, such as the lack of a sunglasses holder in an overhead bin, and the somewhat unpleasant engine sound under moderately hard acceleration (although cruising noise is virtually silent). Also, I miss having a CD player (yes, I'm showing my age, but I have a lot of CDs).UPDATE: FOURTEEN MONTHS LATERThe XC60 continues to exceed my expectations. After several 600 mile round trips, puttering around town, and a total of 18,600 miles on the odometer, there are ZERO mechanical, electrical, interface, or infotainment issues. None. The R-Design has had one oil change service and software update (neither of which cost me anything) and another service is due in a couple of weeks. The engine has not used any oil in the roughly 9000 miles of use since the last oil change. The A/C system is terrific, cooling the interior quickly in these hot summer months. All the safety systems continue to function as advertised and impress my occasional work mate passengers. Interstate cruising is quiet, relaxing, and unstressful. Certainly the driver still needs to monitor the road and input steering as required, but the automatic cruise control and lane keeping systems help the miles melt by. Fuel mileage also continues in the upper 27-28 mpg range at interstate cruising speeds (70-75 mph), and strictly around town driving yields low 20s mpg. We continue to appreciate the very comfortable seats, excellent Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and roomy interior. The XC60 is the optimum size for us and our travel and commuting needs. Because this is my first experience, much less, my first ownership of a Volvo product, I was very skeptical. However, the vehicle has won me over and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. After living with it for nearly 18 months, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design! Even after almost three years and nearly 40k miles of ownership, the XC60 is still performing exceptionally well and providing excellent service. I have zero complaints or areas of concern, and there's even a trace of new-car-smell lingering. Although the free maintenance period is over, the last scheduled service was handled quickly and reasonably by the top-notch tech team at the dealership. I would highly recommend this Volvo to anyone looking for solid, reliable, efficient, and stylish transportation.

I completely understand your frustration with the lack of Apple CarPlay and Sirius XM in the 2022 XC models. It's disappointing to hear that Volvo customer service couldn't provide a clear timeline for when these features will be available. It's always important to consider all options before making a purchase, so I would recommend taking a look at some of the competitors to see if they offer a better infotainment system. Thank you for sharing your experience and concerns with us.

Overall, this car is a pleasure to drive. With the T6 and AWD it can be a blast. This is my wife's car and she drives it like a soccer mom but when I run out in it, it becomes an animal and is worthy of any road or traffic condition. We came out of two minivans so maybe my expectations were low. For what it's worth, we put our 18 yr old in a 10 year old s40 for safety.

Sorry to hear about your car troubles! It sounds like you've had a rough time with it. Hopefully, the dealer can help you out this time. In the meantime, at least you have your reliable jeep to fall back on. Hang in there!

The car has been serviced four times for the same problem, with intermittent error lights for ABS, tire pressure, and city safety. Despite the issue starting under warranty, the dealership waited until it expired to begin charging for repairs. It is worth noting that the 2015 XC60 has the same error. It is concerning that a service inquiry is triggered every time the error lights come on. As a long-time Volvo customer with four family Volvos, it is disappointing to see a decline in the brand's dependability and service quality. Regrettably, we are now considering other car options. This is particularly disheartening given our positive experiences with older Volvos that have lasted over 200k miles.

I purchased this Volvo brand new and it came with a 5-year/50,000-mile promotional factory warranty that has just ended. During this time, Volvo has been very helpful in repairing or replacing various parts under warranty, including the battery (twice), a few plastic pieces, the AC condenser, the gas gauge sending and receiving unit, the rear back up camera, the dash computer, the rear hatch actuator, and fixing a leaky windshield. However, there is still a bad smell in the car that they believe is caused by mildew from water getting under the carpet due to the leaking windshield. Despite the repairs, I am concerned about the car's reliability, especially since it has less than 50,000 miles and I have maintained it well. I contacted Volvo to express my concerns and asked them to extend the warranty or provide a good incentive to trade in for a newer Volvo. Their initial response was not satisfactory, but after writing a stronger letter, I received a call from the servicing dealer (Jaguar Land Rover Porsche Volvo of Greenville). I met with them and they reviewed the repair history and provided me with some helpful information. The car was out of service for a total of 28 days over the course of 5 years. It had been in for service 11 times during that period. While this may not seem too bad, we had to live with any issues until the next scheduled service as we live about 40 minutes away from the dealer. If I had to pay for those repairs, it would have cost me approximately $5000. I feel that $5000 for repairs in the first 5 years is unacceptable, as this is when a car should need to be repaired the least. However, when I expressed my concerns to the dealer, he told me that bringing the car in 11 times in 5 years was actually below average. When I mentioned that Volvo cannot be proud of the repair history of this car and that it cannot be considered usual and customary, he said that two of the repairs added up to $2600 and if we separated out those two repairs, the repair history of $2400 was actually pretty good. While all of this was going on, they priced my car for a trade-in and offered me $11,000, which would be a 75% depreciation in 5 years for a vehicle with no visible damage inside or out and less than 50,000 miles (KBB prices median trade-in at $14,000). The end result is that Volvo obviously feels, and the dealer representative has expressed to me, that these repairs are normal and within acceptable limits. However, I obviously disagree. Also, be aware that while Volvo is responsive to emails, you cannot speak directly with a decision maker as they are shielded. This can be very frustrating.
