Volvo 850 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car that was produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1991 until 1996. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the car was introduced in a saloon body style; an estate style was introduced in 1993.

The Volvo 850 was shown for the first time in June 1991, and the car marked a departure for Volvo, featuring multiple unprecedented features for the company; these included a transverse 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, a Delta-link rear axle, a side impact protection system, and a self-adjusting front seat belt mechanism.

The Volvo 850 was succeeded by the Volvo S70 and Volvo V70.

Common Volvo 850 problems

The Volvo 850 is known for several common problems, including issues with the transmission, cooling system, electrical system, and various engine problems.

One of the most common issues with the Volvo 850 is related to the transmission. Early 1993 models of the 850 were known to have transmission problems, specifically related to the first and second gears. The issue was caused by a design flaw in the transmission, which led to premature wear and damage to the gears. To solve this problem, owners would need to have their transmission rebuilt or replaced with a newer model.

Another common issue with the Volvo 850 is related to the cooling system. Over time, the radiator and water pump may become worn and begin to leak coolant. This can cause the engine to overheat and potentially lead to more serious engine damage if not addressed promptly. Regular maintenance of the cooling system, including replacing the coolant and checking for leaks, is recommended to prevent this issue.

The Volvo 850 was also known to have issues with its electrical system. This included problems with the battery and alternator, which could lead to a dead battery or the car not starting. Electrical issues could also affect the airbag system, causing warning lights to come on or the airbags to malfunction. Replacing the battery or alternator as needed and addressing any wiring issues can help to prevent these problems.

In terms of engine problems, the Volvo 850 was known to have issues with the PCV system, which can become clogged with oil sludge over time. This can lead to a range of issues including reduced power, increased oil consumption, and excessive engine smoking. To fix this issue, the PCV system can be cleaned or replaced.

The timing belt in the Volvo 850 is also a crucial component that can cause serious engine damage if it fails. To prevent this issue, the timing belt should be replaced every 70,000-90,000 miles depending on the model year.

Some Volvo 850 models with the 2.4-liter engine may experience issues with the oil cooler, which can develop leaks over time. This can lead to low oil pressure and engine damage. To fix this issue, the oil cooler can be replaced.

The engine mounts in the Volvo 850 can also become worn over time, leading to excessive engine movement and increased vibration while driving. To fix this issue, the engine mounts can be replaced.

Issues with the fuel system can also occur in the Volvo 850, particularly with the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator. Symptoms may include difficulty starting the engine or stalling while driving. To fix this issue, the faulty component can be replaced.

Overall, addressing engine problems in the Volvo 850 promptly is key to ensuring the longevity and reliability of the car. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups, can also help to prevent issues from occurring in the first place. By staying on top of engine maintenance and repairs, Volvo 850 owners can enjoy their car for years to come.

NO ODOR WHEN TANK IS ONLY PARTIALLY FULL, E.G., 80% FULL. ODOR NOTICED WHEN VEHICLE STATIONARY. NO ODOR IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. ISSUE ONGOING FOR ROUGHLY LAST 7 YEARS (NOT SURE). NO DRIPPING FUEL OBSERVED. LEAK MAY BE AT FUEL PUMP QUICK-DISCONNECT FITTINGS. LEAK MAY HAVE STARTED AS A RESULT OF EVAP SYSTEM REPAIR IN LATE 2009--NOT SURE. DEALER CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED LEAK AT FUEL PUMP FITTINGS IN 2011, BUT ODOR ISSUE PERSISTS IF TANK COMPLETELY FULL. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ISSUES SINCE 2011. I AVOID FILLING TANK COMPLETELY TO AVOID ODOR. IF I INADVERTENTLY FILL TANK COMPLETELY, ODOR RETURNS. "WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN" DATE I ENTERED IS JUST A ROUGH GUESS OF WHEN THE ISSUE STARTED. VEHICLE IS STORED OUTDOORS AND DRIVEN INFREQUENTLY, ~ ONCE PER WEEK AVERAGE. ODOR IS EASILY NOTICEABLE OUTDOORS WHEN TANK IS COMPLETELY FULL.

THE MICHELIN WEBSITE DESCRIBED THIS TIRE AS AN "ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTE" FOR THE TIRES SPECIFIED BY VOLVO BECAUSE MICHELIN NO LONGER OFFERS HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES IN MY SIZE. STOPPING POWER IS MUCH WORSE WITH THESE NEW MICHELIN TIRES. THEY SQUEAL EASILY, EVEN AT VOLVO'S HIGHEST RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE (36PSI). I HAD DIFFICULTY STOPPING FROM 50MPH IN AN EMERGENCY, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY 17 YEAR OWNERSHIP OF THIS VEHICLE. I BLAME THESE NEW "COMFORT ORIENTED" TIRES. *TR

  • Date Complaint: 2012-08-19
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: YV1LS552XR2
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE CONSOLE AND STEERING WHEEL WERE WET FROM RAIN. THE SRS DASH WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. ABOUT 5 MILES AFTER THAT, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THE BAG WAS THE ORIGINAL BAG. THE SRS LIGHT HAD GONE ON ONCE 20 MONTHS BEFORE WHEN THE CONSOLE GOT WET. THE DEALERSHIP RAN A TEST FOR ABOUT $115 EACH ON BOTH OCCASIONS AND SAID THE CAUSE OF THE SRS LIGHT COMING ON WAS INDETERMINATE. TWENTY MONTHS AGO A TOP, LONGTIME VOLVO DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER ASSURED ME THAT AIR BAGS NEVER GO OFF WITHOUT AN IMPACT. HE SAID THERE HAD NOT BEEN A SINGLE OCCASION OF THAT EVER HAPPENING. I SHOULD HAVE GOOGLED THE TOPIC. I WOULD HAVE SEEN RIGHT AWAY THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. TWO BONES IN MY FOREARM WERE BROKEN AND HEAVY BRUISES THAT ARE STILL VISIBLE 5 WEEKS LATER WERE LEFT ON MY STOMACH AND THIGHS. CORPORATE OFFICES AND THE DEALERSHIP SAY THE BAG WAS OUT OF WARRANTY; A REPLACEMENT STEERING WHEEL TO INSTALL A NEW BAG IS NOT AVAILABLE; AND THAT THEY WILL NOT DISCONNECT THE PASSENGER BAG, THOUGH I CONSIDER IT A TIME BOMB. BEFORE WRITING AN EMAIL ATTEMPTING TO PLACE THE BLAME ON ME, ERICA AT "THE EXECUTIVE OFFICES OF VOLVO" LEFT AN APPARENTLY INANE VOICE MAIL THAT I HAVE SAVED FOR NOW SAYING "THIS IS NOT EXACTLY A SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT. WE DO KNOW WHY THE BAG DEPLOYED IN YOUR VEHICLE." I EMAILED BACK THAT HER CLAIM THAT "WE" KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE BAG TO DEPLOY "STRUCK ME AS ODD BECAUSE NO ONE AT THE VOLVO [DEALERSHIP] THIS PAST WEEK SAID THAT THEY KNEW." EVEN AFTER RUNNING A CHECK ON THE SRS SYSTEM, AND CHARGING ME $115 TO DO SO, THEY STILL SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW. IN FACT A FEW WEEKS AGO TWO LONG TIME SERVICE MANAGERS WERE SAYING MY EXPERIENCE WAS UNPRECEDENTED OR IMPOSSIBLE. I SUGGESTED IN ANOTHER EMAIL TO ERICA THAT THE CORPORATION HAD A MORAL OBLIGATION TO INFORM THEIR SERVICE MANAGERS OF DOCUMENTED CASES OF SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT. *TR

I WAS UNABLE TO SLOW THE CAR OR RELEASE THE ACCELERATOR. FORTUNATELY, I HAD THE KNOWLEDGE AND SENSE TO SLOW THE CAR. PUMPING THE BRAKES DID NOT HELP. I MANAGED TO HOLD THE BRAKES WHILE DOWNSHIFTING INTO THE LOW AND THEN LOWEST GEAR IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I MANAGED TO NEGOTIATE THE CAR TOWARD THE SHOULDER AND EVENTUALLY THREW THE TRANSMISSION INTO THE PARK GEAR. THE CAR JOLTED, THEN STOPPED. THIS WAS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION FOR ME AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. *TT

Latest negative Volvo 850 car reviews

  1. Giuseppe Weimann 2024-09-28

    Vehicle year: 1995

This car has been a bit of a disappointment. I bought it used at 30,000 miles and unfortunately, it experienced 3 major mechanical failures between 60,000 and 90,000 miles, which ended up costing me over $6,000 in repairs. It seems like there may be some engineering issues with this car, and it hasn't been as reliable as I had hoped. If you're considering purchasing this car or any Volvo, I would recommend getting the extended warranty and being mindful of the warranty expiration date.

  2. Sanford Armstrong 2024-09-28

    Vehicle year: 1993

This car is one of the best values we've ever purchased in a used car. However, after almost 5 years of ownership, I must say that it is bittersweet. While the maintenance costs are quite high, it is built like a tank and has the most comfortable seats I have ever experienced. On the highway, we get an impressive 27 mpg (imperial gallon)!

  3. Carleton Kunde 2024-09-19

    Vehicle year: 1996

The air conditioner and emissions sensor have both malfunctioned, each requiring a repair cost of $1500. Additionally, there have been persistent squeaks and rattles, which have proven difficult to locate despite my best efforts. While my experience with dealerships has been less than satisfactory, I have previously owned an Acura and am considering returning to that brand.

  4. Johnpaul Runte 2024-09-03

The 96 850 turbo is a blast to drive with its sporty suspension, 16” low profile tires, and 222 HP performance. However, we have found that it is the most expensive Volvo we have owned (out of 4 others) in terms of upkeep. Compared to our other Volvo, a 92 960 wagon, the 850 requires more maintenance. We have had to replace the transmission (dealer only repair, $2400) at 90k miles and a new air mass sensor unit ($250). Additionally, we have had to refill the A/C several times due to the evaporator leaking, which costs over $1000 to replace. The TRAC and ABS lights are always on and the braking system occasionally freaks out, requiring a new computer module costing over $300. We would appreciate any advice on how to reduce these costs in the future.

The placement of the mirror controls on the center console could be improved. When my wife puts her purse on the console, it activates the mirrors. However, the car does have some great safety features, such as anti-collision lights. While the fog lights may not improve driving vision, they do add a nice touch to the car's aesthetics. Unfortunately, there have been some issues with the gear box on three occasions, and the window wind deflectors and body side moldings fell off after two years. Additionally, the cheap plastic hood latch broke within a year. It's worth noting that the wide door post creates a significant blind spot when looking over your shoulder. Lastly, the power seat broke at the 5-year mark and required a new cable. Overall, my experience with this Volvo has been mixed, and I may consider other options in the future.

Thank you for considering our vehicle, which is the only forced induction model that uses reg-87 gas. We are proud to offer a car that runs and drives great, with V-8 power and 4-cylinder gas sipping. And of course, safety is always a top priority for Volvo. We encourage you to buy one now and experience the benefits for yourself. Thank you for your interest!

This car is in great condition with only 118000 miles, which is even better than my 60k mile Ponitac GTP. It's a pleasure to drive, very comfortable, quiet and rattle-free. The interior materials are of good quality and the platinum edition car is fully loaded. The heated leather seats are especially nice on cold mornings. Although it's not the fastest car on the road, the 220hp turbo 5cyl engine keeps it in the above average range. I really like the styling of this car and it even gets some attention from other drivers. It's also reassuring to know that I'm driving one of the safest cars on the road.
