Volvo S60 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.

The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.

The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.

The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

Common Volvo S60 problems

The Volvo S60 is a popular luxury sedan, but like any vehicle, it can have its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Volvo S60, based on complaints from owners:

  • Software issues: There have been reports of software problems in the Volvo S60, particularly with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision. This issue affects cars built between 26 September 2018 and 30 October 2018, and can be fixed with a software update at any Volvo dealer.
  • Loose rear suspension nuts: Some Volvo S60s built between 25 September 2018 and 1 April 2019 may have loose nuts and screws on the rear suspension. If your car is affected, contact your local dealer for a check and replacement if necessary.
  • Automatic emergency braking (AEB) system: There have been reports of the AEB system not applying the brakes when it should, particularly in V60, S90, V90, XC40, XC60, and XC90 models built after 21 January 2019. A software update can fix this issue, and affected owners should have been contacted by Volvo. However, it's always a good idea to check with your local retailer for further information.
  • ABS light illuminated: The ABS light may be illuminated on the dashboard, indicating a problem with the ABS control module. This is a relatively common issue on the S60, and the only solution is to replace the entire failed control module.
  • Acceleration hesitation: Some Volvo S60 owners have reported hesitation when accelerating, which may be accompanied by idle engine issues and an illuminated check engine light. This problem can be caused by a failed mass airflow sensor (MAF), which will need to be replaced.
  • Fuel leaks: Fuel leaks are a serious issue in the Volvo S60, particularly in models built between 2010 and 2018. These leaks can be caused by high-pressure fuel lines not being installed correctly, and can lead to a fire risk if not addressed quickly. It's important to check your high-pressure fuel lines and replace them if necessary.
  • Engine seizure: Some early examples of the Volvo S60 may have an incorrectly installed radiator hose, leading to a loss of coolant and engine seizure. If you notice your engine overheating or seizing, it's important to address this issue immediately by replacing the radiator hose.
  • Unusual smell inside car: An unusual smell inside the car, accompanied by an engine warning light and hesitation when accelerating, can indicate a serious problem in Volvo S60s with 2.0 ltr engines. This issue affects around 70,000 Volvos in the UK and can lead to a petrol fire if not addressed quickly.
  • Exhaust system problems: There have been reports of exhaust system problems in the Volvo S60, particularly in 2.0-litre diesel models. These issues can lead to failures of the heated rear screen and the radar system, which helps cruise control to maintain a set distance from the car in front.
  • Airbags not deploying correctly: There have been reports of airbags not deploying correctly during accidents in the Volvo S60. It's important to check with a Volvo dealer to make sure your car isn't affected by this issue.

In general, the Volvo S60 has a reputation for reliability, with the brand finishing in 11th place out of 31 manufacturers included in the latest reliability survey by What Car?. However, as with any vehicle, it's important to be aware of common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of your car.

  • VIN: YV4612UM0G2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In November of 2021, I purchased my dream car, a 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country, proud to own a vehicle from a company known for their safe and reliable vehicles. In April of 2022, a class action case ([XXX], et al., v. Volvo Car USA, LLC, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, and Volvo Personvagnar AB) was issued against Volvo due to a KNOWN-TO-VOLVO DESIGN FLAW in their engines which could lead to engine failure. The case was settled out of court in early 2023 and Volvo issued an extended warranty for vehicles owners to take preventative measures against potential engine failure. Although my car is listed under the extended warranty, I was never sent any notice of it from Volvo. On [XXX], while driving on a highway, at speed limit, my 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country's engine failed. I learned about the Extended Warranty from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Quality Bulletin (Extended Warranty P10183: I5T Oil Consumption Replace; Model Year 20132016 S60, 2015-2016 V60, V60CC and XC60, 2016 XC70, S60CC and S60L) while researching the issue with my car online. I contacted Volvo Customer Care to ask why I was not sent notice and what they could do. I was told that to open a case with Volvo I would need a diagnostic from a dealership. On August 5, 2024, I took my car in for a diagnostic at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, IL, from who I also purchased the car in 2021. August 6, 2024 I received a partial diagnostic and was told that they would require 10x the original diagnostic price to find the root of the issue in the engine. On the same day, I called Volvo customer care and opened a case. After weeks of little to no communication, on September 3 Volvo denied my case. I was not provided any opportunity to communicate over the phone with my case manager at Volvo - only after she sent me the decision did I receive a call from her to learn Volvo does not care about my side of the story. • VIN: LYV402TM6HB

  • Summary: Yesterday I took my one year old granddaughter to North Carolina, which is an hour and a half drive away. We had breakfast with family members and I loaded her into the back seat. When I closed the door it looked as if the door closed, but as I began to drive, the door swung open. I attempted to close the door again, and the latch would not connect to the hook inside of the driver side rear door. I ended up needing to have my son sit in the back seat and hold the door closed the entire ride home (an hour and a half) to make sure that the door would not open again. I am currently driving my "new" car with a ratchet strap going from door to door to hold the door closed so that I can go to work. I found information stating that there was a recall on the Volvo S60 (2017) but when I enter my VIN nothing displays. I just bought the vehicle in February and the dealership is telling me that this will cost me $450 to repair on my MAX CARE warranty. Why? When the vehicle had a recall on it in 2020 that obviously was never addressed, prior to me purchasing it.

  • Summary: Since we purchased the car in December, water was observed on occasion streaking down the inside of the windshield. The headliner is damp after rain, and is stained from water as a result. Additionally defrost/defog wasn’t working, and my son reported having to pull over and wait for the rain to stop so he could drive with the windows down in order to be able to see the road. INCREDIBLY unsafe/unable to drive in the rain. I recently applied pressure to the inside of the windshield with my fingertips by the A-pillars on both driver and passenger side to test the seal and visually confirmed the windshield was lifting off of the frame, revealing a broken seal along the top and sides of the windshield.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-07
  • VIN: YV1622FS5C2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Discovered that my engine is burning oil. There was no warning from my vehicle or from Volvo (during regular maintenance) that this was happening. It was just sudden that the check engine light went on and I checked the oil and found that it was basically empty. Volvo confirmed that the engine is burning oil and that this model and make was discovered to have this engine issue. Volvo did not offer a solution other than to buy a new vehicle to replace this one. In my research online, this problem is common for this model and make 2012 S60 T5, may other have reported the same issue and it seems that there is a recall for this problem but my vehicle (VIN) does not report this to be a problem for my car. I’m not sure what to do.

Latest negative Volvo S60 car reviews

  1. Garrison Johns 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2018

I bought my fourth Volvo, an S60, mainly because of the City Safety System. The ads for this feature made me wonder how I or my family could drive without it. However, a month after purchasing the car, I was involved in an accident where the car didn't stop or even slow down, despite the City Safety System. I was disappointed and confused. I reached out to Volvo's customer service, and they sent a technician to check the 'black box.' They informed me that the system worked fine, but it only works in certain conditions, which were not accurately portrayed in the advertising. Although I was disappointed with this feature, I still believe that Volvo makes great vehicles. #VolvoSafetyFail

I purchased this car just two weeks ago, and unfortunately, I've already experienced some issues. During a long drive, I noticed that the steering wheel began to vibrate quite a bit, especially at speeds over 75 mph. After doing some research, I discovered that this is a common issue with even brand new Volvos, and it seems that the company is aware of the problem. Additionally, I had an issue with my front right parking sensors, which resulted in damage to my alloy wheel. While I understand that Volvo is known for their safety, these issues are concerning and have the potential to be a safety hazard. Despite these setbacks, I'm hopeful that Volvo will address these issues and improve their vehicles. As a customer, I'm disappointed with my purchase, but I'm optimistic that the company will work to make things right.

In the few months of ownership, I have unfortunately experienced several issues with my car. Despite my efforts to maintain it, I have had to have it towed three times. While I am disappointed with the performance of this car, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with proper attention and care. I look forward to addressing these concerns and improving the performance of my Volvo.

So far I like this car and it is fun to drive. It works very well as a daily driver and has some good kick, although it is still far from a sports car.I have one major issue with this car. Volvo has built heating elements into the windshield (small wires every few millimeters). At night all lights reflect off of these wires and makes the lights blurry. It is a huge safety issue and is extremely annoying.Due to this issue alone, I am not sure if I will keep this car very long.Although it is nice to have a heated steering wheel, skip the Climate Package if you buy this car.

I recently had an experience with the 2021 Volvo S60 T6 AWD Inscription, VIN digits 3850. I ordered the car in June of 2020 and it was delivered to the dealer from the factory on 10/23/2020. The car was equipped with all available options, including Polestar software, and had an out-of-door price of $57,450. Although the dealer was approximately 90 miles away from my residence, I received the car on 10/29/20 from Volvo Cars Mission Viejo. Unfortunately, the car experienced some issues at mile 28, with the odometer at 34 miles. When I contacted the dealer, they advised me that the car needed to be towed in since one should not drive without operational signals. Although it was a frustrating experience, I was able to schedule an appointment with San Diego Volvo and they were able to repair the car. Despite some initial difficulties, I am happy with the service I received from San Diego Volvo. When we attempted to collect the car the next day, we encountered the same fault (no signal, no 360 degree camera) and were sent back on our way (without the car), and were forced to leave the car over the weekend. The following week, we were called again to collect the car. This time, the car functioned for three full days before resuming the same fault. The situation then escalated, and the car refused to start at random intervals. Unfortunately, we are now stuck with a brand-new vehicle (with less than 500 miles on the odometer) and no recourse other than to hire an attorney. We advise against purchasing this car. Although it may look good on paper (which is why we bought it), it is the most unreliable vehicle we have ever owned, including the garage queen Audi Q5. When it does drive, it is inferior to the A4 and much, much worse than any Lexus sedan we have owned (LS and GS). Any comparison with the BMW 3 series (presumed competition) is just laughable – its handling is boat-like for anyone accustomed to BMW precision and stiff chassis. However, the worst part of the experience was the actual Volvo customer “support” – it turns out that there is no such thing in existence.

I'm so glad to hear that your daughter was okay after the accident! It sounds like you had a great experience with the 2007 S-60. The turbo really adds some pep to the car, and the handling on the AWD is excellent, especially in wet weather. Plus, the fuel mileage is very good on regular gas. Based on your positive experience, I would definitely recommend this car as well.

I recently found a 2007 P2 Volvo S60R that I had been searching for, for many months. It was a 1-owner, low mileage example that I couldn't resist. I have had it for a little over a month now and I am happy to say that I have no regrets. It is important to note that the 'R' moniker for the 2004-2007 S60 series vehicles indicated a very different kind of car than all of the non-'R' variants. So, if you are looking for a review of any S60 model that doesn't have the 'R' badge, you can stop reading and move on to the next review. The S60R has a significantly re-worked 300HP 5-cylinder engine, sport exhaust, electronically-controlled suspension, Brembo performance disc brakes, and AWD, which give it a completely different driving character than its siblings. It's quick, nimble, and produces an angry snarl--not too loud or thrashy-- when the tachometer goes over 2k RPM. In terms of styling, the P2 S60's are admittedly divisive. People seem to like it or hate it. I personally like it. Fortunately, Volvo didn't go overboard with plastic cladding and spoilers on the 'R' models, adding a slightly different front and rear fascia, subtle 'R' badge on the front black cube grille and rear trunk lid, and great-looking 17If you take good care of the car, expensive repairs like the electronically-controlled struts won't come up often. While the S60R may not match the overall performance of a BMW M3, I personally love it for that reason. It's not trying to be something it's not. This pre-Polestar era Volvo has a sporty character, along with the safety and build quality that Volvo is renowned for. It doesn't flaunt its extra performance, but rather reveals it only when needed. It's truly awesome.

I stumbled upon this amazing car on Craigslist at the last minute. My previous car, a 2003 BMW 3-series, was a nightmare with constant problems that drained my wallet. Living in an area with heavy snowfall, I needed a car with AWD/4WD. While I haven't tested the AWD in the snow yet, I have been a bit disappointed with how it handles in the rain, possibly due to the KUMHO tires. In terms of reliability, I've had the oil changed twice at my local Volvo dealership and both times they've said the car looks amazing and needs nothing. I may consider getting the transmission fluid done on my next visit as sometimes it flares from 1st-2nd gear after a long highway drive. My car has sport seats but doesn't have the GPS or Xenon headlight option, which is a bummer. However, the seats are incredibly comfortable, even after sitting in the car for over 7 hours non-stop! The back seats lack leg-room and the turning radius isn't great, but aside from those two negatives, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone! Mine was a 2-owner car that was very well taken care of at the dealership/Volvo independent shop. Even after 11 years, this car still looks amazing and people still ask me if it's brand new. Take care of it, feed it premium fuel, only use synthetic oil, and it'll return the favor!

I bought my S60 to replace my 2000 Volvo V70, which I loved. I chose this car because I was planning a winter road trip to Montana and wanted something with AWD. Although I would have preferred an XC-70, I couldn't find one for the right price or in the time I had. Luckily, I found my S60 for sale at the local Mercedes dealership for $6995 with 102,000 miles. It was a one-owner vehicle purchased from and always serviced on time at the local Volvo dealership in town. I added some new features to make it even better, such as a new set of tires, some sheepskin seat covers, and some OEM all-weather mats. The car is much smoother than my old wagon, has great acceleration despite the additional 600lbs of the Haldex AWD system, and has decent gas mileage and road handling. Like all Volvos, the seats are supremely comfortable--second-to-none! My car's trial by fire was a 900+ mile road trip from Nevada to Montana in December amid regular blizzards and arctic temperatures. I was pleasantly surprised by the gas mileage, which was pretty decent at around 28mpg at over 80mph most of the time (regularly around 21mpg for mixed everyday driving). As with most vehicles, it handled poorly on ice, but it did great in the snow. I do wish that it hadn't been quite so low to the ground in deeper snow. Much to my surprise yet again, the A/C and heating systems were some of the best I've encountered! Some of the other reviews have mentioned the cramped nature of the backseats, which is true, as it's very tight with a full-size adult sitting back there. The trunk, while spacious, has a fairly narrow opening which makes it difficult to put some things in. I have a wheeled cooler that I like to take to the beach which often has to sit on the backseat rather than in the trunk. Overall, I don't have many complaints about this car over four years of ownership. I enjoyed driving it and it was a sharp-looking car.One of my biggest concerns, though, was all the creaks, groans, and clunks I was experiencing from the frontend. I ended up having a lot of the components replaced in an attempt to fix this. Update: The S60 is still going as strong as ever! I've since done the brakes and had a bunch of bushing and strut mounts replaced at the dealership, but that's about it other than regular maintenance (oil, spark plugs, air filter, etc.). I did have a coyote run into my car and had to have some bodywork done, but that was good because it fixed the front bumper sag too. It looks just as good as ever now too. People often remark on my

I bought this car as a certified preowned and have enjoyed it ever since. Although there is some turbo lag and torque steer when you accelerate, it's still pretty quick. Just make sure you hold the steering wheel tightly when you floor it. The front seats are very comfortable, but the back seats need more legroom for my two kids. I appreciate the simplicity of all the Volvo controls, but some could be improved. For example, the heated seats should turn off automatically when you turn off the car. Additionally, the door lock button only has one button for both lock and unlock, which can be confusing. Finally, the key fob has a slight delay, and my kids are always a bit too quick to open the doors.
