Volvo S60 problems
The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.
The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.
The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

Common Volvo S60 problems
The Volvo S60 is a popular luxury sedan, but like any vehicle, it can have its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Volvo S60, based on complaints from owners:
- Software issues: There have been reports of software problems in the Volvo S60, particularly with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision. This issue affects cars built between 26 September 2018 and 30 October 2018, and can be fixed with a software update at any Volvo dealer.
- Loose rear suspension nuts: Some Volvo S60s built between 25 September 2018 and 1 April 2019 may have loose nuts and screws on the rear suspension. If your car is affected, contact your local dealer for a check and replacement if necessary.
- Automatic emergency braking (AEB) system: There have been reports of the AEB system not applying the brakes when it should, particularly in V60, S90, V90, XC40, XC60, and XC90 models built after 21 January 2019. A software update can fix this issue, and affected owners should have been contacted by Volvo. However, it's always a good idea to check with your local retailer for further information.
- ABS light illuminated: The ABS light may be illuminated on the dashboard, indicating a problem with the ABS control module. This is a relatively common issue on the S60, and the only solution is to replace the entire failed control module.
- Acceleration hesitation: Some Volvo S60 owners have reported hesitation when accelerating, which may be accompanied by idle engine issues and an illuminated check engine light. This problem can be caused by a failed mass airflow sensor (MAF), which will need to be replaced.
- Fuel leaks: Fuel leaks are a serious issue in the Volvo S60, particularly in models built between 2010 and 2018. These leaks can be caused by high-pressure fuel lines not being installed correctly, and can lead to a fire risk if not addressed quickly. It's important to check your high-pressure fuel lines and replace them if necessary.
- Engine seizure: Some early examples of the Volvo S60 may have an incorrectly installed radiator hose, leading to a loss of coolant and engine seizure. If you notice your engine overheating or seizing, it's important to address this issue immediately by replacing the radiator hose.
- Unusual smell inside car: An unusual smell inside the car, accompanied by an engine warning light and hesitation when accelerating, can indicate a serious problem in Volvo S60s with 2.0 ltr engines. This issue affects around 70,000 Volvos in the UK and can lead to a petrol fire if not addressed quickly.
- Exhaust system problems: There have been reports of exhaust system problems in the Volvo S60, particularly in 2.0-litre diesel models. These issues can lead to failures of the heated rear screen and the radar system, which helps cruise control to maintain a set distance from the car in front.
- Airbags not deploying correctly: There have been reports of airbags not deploying correctly during accidents in the Volvo S60. It's important to check with a Volvo dealer to make sure your car isn't affected by this issue.
In general, the Volvo S60 has a reputation for reliability, with the brand finishing in 11th place out of 31 manufacturers included in the latest reliability survey by What Car?. However, as with any vehicle, it's important to be aware of common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of your car.
Is the Volvo S60 a reliable car?

What are the problems with a Volvo S60?
If you are having performance problems with your S60, the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) is known to get blocked by a carbon build up. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor also gets a build up. Poor engine idling, bad starting and lack of power/acceleration are all symptoms of these issues.

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: In November of 2021, I purchased my dream car, a 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country, proud to own a vehicle from a company known for their safe and reliable vehicles. In April of 2022, a class action case ([XXX], et al., v. Volvo Car USA, LLC, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, and Volvo Personvagnar AB) was issued against Volvo due to a KNOWN-TO-VOLVO DESIGN FLAW in their engines which could lead to engine failure. The case was settled out of court in early 2023 and Volvo issued an extended warranty for vehicles owners to take preventative measures against potential engine failure. Although my car is listed under the extended warranty, I was never sent any notice of it from Volvo. On [XXX], while driving on a highway, at speed limit, my 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country's engine failed. I learned about the Extended Warranty from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Quality Bulletin (Extended Warranty P10183: I5T Oil Consumption Replace; Model Year 20132016 S60, 2015-2016 V60, V60CC and XC60, 2016 XC70, S60CC and S60L) while researching the issue with my car online. I contacted Volvo Customer Care to ask why I was not sent notice and what they could do. I was told that to open a case with Volvo I would need a diagnostic from a dealership. On August 5, 2024, I took my car in for a diagnostic at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, IL, from who I also purchased the car in 2021. August 6, 2024 I received a partial diagnostic and was told that they would require 10x the original diagnostic price to find the root of the issue in the engine. On the same day, I called Volvo customer care and opened a case. After weeks of little to no communication, on September 3 Volvo denied my case. I was not provided any opportunity to communicate over the phone with my case manager at Volvo - only after she sent me the decision did I receive a call from her to learn Volvo does not care about my side of the story. - Summary: Yesterday I took my one year old granddaughter to North Carolina, which is an hour and a half drive away. We had breakfast with family members and I loaded her into the back seat. When I closed the door it looked as if the door closed, but as I began to drive, the door swung open. I attempted to close the door again, and the latch would not connect to the hook inside of the driver side rear door. I ended up needing to have my son sit in the back seat and hold the door closed the entire ride home (an hour and a half) to make sure that the door would not open again. I am currently driving my "new" car with a ratchet strap going from door to door to hold the door closed so that I can go to work. I found information stating that there was a recall on the Volvo S60 (2017) but when I enter my VIN nothing displays. I just bought the vehicle in February and the dealership is telling me that this will cost me $450 to repair on my MAX CARE warranty. Why? When the vehicle had a recall on it in 2020 that obviously was never addressed, prior to me purchasing it.

- Summary: Since we purchased the car in December, water was observed on occasion streaking down the inside of the windshield. The headliner is damp after rain, and is stained from water as a result. Additionally defrost/defog wasn’t working, and my son reported having to pull over and wait for the rain to stop so he could drive with the windows down in order to be able to see the road. INCREDIBLY unsafe/unable to drive in the rain. I recently applied pressure to the inside of the windshield with my fingertips by the A-pillars on both driver and passenger side to test the seal and visually confirmed the windshield was lifting off of the frame, revealing a broken seal along the top and sides of the windshield.

- Date Complaint: 2024-07-07
- VIN: YV1622FS5C2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Discovered that my engine is burning oil. There was no warning from my vehicle or from Volvo (during regular maintenance) that this was happening. It was just sudden that the check engine light went on and I checked the oil and found that it was basically empty. Volvo confirmed that the engine is burning oil and that this model and make was discovered to have this engine issue. Volvo did not offer a solution other than to buy a new vehicle to replace this one. In my research online, this problem is common for this model and make 2012 S60 T5, may other have reported the same issue and it seems that there is a recall for this problem but my vehicle (VIN) does not report this to be a problem for my car. I’m not sure what to do.

The car stalled after leaving a stop sign so I wasn't going fast. I spoke to my local mechanic and he had another Volvo S60 T5 in his shop with the same issue showing up but that owner was lucky enough to not have the engine destroyed in the process. From what he is saying is that every other car has some kind of timing belt protection that the Volvo S60 is missing. In searching the Internet this is a very common issue that occurs. I registered a complaint with Volvo today.

Vehicle year: 2014
I bought my 2013 Volvo S60 T5 three years ago in 2017 with approximately 88,000 miles on it. It was a one owner vehicle that was maintained by one dealer the whole time. Overall, I am very happy with my S60 as it was a major upgrade from my 2008 Honda Civic. The power, driver engagement, and comfortable seats are some of the best features of this car, especially considering its price range. The quality of the door shutting sound is also impressive. I purposely sought out a 2013 or newer model since I knew the 2011 and 2012 models were affected by the piston ring Technical service bulletin(TSB) for oil consumption. However, I was disappointed to find out that I was still buying an oil burner. Despite this, I do all of my own repairs and service on my vehicles and change the oil in the Volvo every 5,000 miles with Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5w30 and a Mann oil filter. In the first two years of ownership, I had to replace the driver’s side door lock actuator, do a full tune-up, and replace the pcv/oil filter assembly. I found out that parts for Volvo's that are under 5 years old are expensive, similar to other European counterparts like VW and BMW. However, I still enjoyed the rest of the vehicle. Two years into ownership with 120k miles on the clock, I started having fouled spark plugs due to the excessive oil consumption despite the plugs only having 20k miles on Volvo OEM plugs. After further research, I found out that the TSB for oil consumption was expanded to include 2013-2017 models with the 2.5L engine. The 5L Turbo engine had some oil consumption issues, but I contacted Volvo corporate in Sweden and they were very helpful. They confirmed the issue and agreed to replace the piston rings at a reduced cost. They even replaced the Timing belt, water pump, belts, and tensioner that I provided. Although it was not a recall, Volvo's willingness to meet me halfway gave me confidence in their commitment to their products. Since the repairs, I have only had to replace a fuel pressure sensor and change the transmission fluid. The car runs great with the same power and luxury feel that it had when I bought it. I recently went on a 2,000 mile road trip without any issues and averaged 28mpg. In mixed commuting, I usually average 23mpg on Premium fuel. If you are looking for a European car with a high-end luxury feel without breaking the bank, I highly recommend giving Volvo a try. With good old port fuel injection, the 2.5L Turbo engine is a reliable choice that will not disappoint. I am looking forward to getting another 100k miles out of my Volvo! It's not quite as much of a 'driver's car' as the others mentioned, but you'll definitely appreciate the lower insurance costs and overall maintenance. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into this segment.

We had the pleasure of taking factory delivery and embarking on a six-week road trip, covering a total of 3600 miles. The seats were incredibly comfortable, making the journey all the more enjoyable. We were impressed with the car's fuel efficiency, averaging 26 mpg at 90 mph on the Autobahn and 30 mpg at lower speeds. While it may not corner as sharply as our previous BMW, it more than makes up for it with its spacious interior and overall comfort. Needless to say, we are extremely pleased with our experience. Factory delivery was an absolute treat and a lot of fun!

I was immediately drawn to the dark ruby red color and fell in love as soon as I melted into the comfortable leather seats. Although I had to replace two of the door gaskets and the accordion-like material used in the sun roof, the AC works perfectly and is ice-cold. However, I did find some drawbacks. The scheduled maintenance is quite expensive at $145 every 7500 miles, and the 30,000 mile check-up costs $510.00. Additionally, the car requires premium gas, and I wish there was a Trunk Release button instead of having to use the key fob, as well as a locking gas door. Lastly, the center console cup holder is a bit awkward, and the lid should fold down. Overall, I absolutely love the car and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

You had a wonderful driving experience! When compared to the Acura TL and BMW 3 series, the Volvo is the clear winner. It's definitely the car to own.

When considering purchasing a new vehicle, I researched several luxury brands including Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Lexus, BMW, Audi, and Volvo. During my test drives, I found the Volvo S60 R-Design to be exceptional in terms of both exterior and interior design. Despite reading reviews that criticized its comfort, technology, rough ride, and low seating position, I have not experienced any issues with my own vehicle since purchasing it last September. In fact, I find the ride to be smoother than that of an Audi, and the technology to be more user-friendly than that of our previous Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. The seats are also incredibly comfortable and provide excellent support. Although the R-Design model sits a bit lower, I personally prefer this feature. The only downside was the lack of an option for a blond interior, but I was able to overlook this. Overall, I believe the Volvo S60 R-Design is a great buy for its cost.

I wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Volvo S60 sedan with a sunroof. During heavy rain, water drained into the cabin of the car, which was frustrating. I believe there is a design flaw with the drainage system in these cars, and I hope Volvo will take ownership of this issue. It would be great if they could recall and repair the entire system at their cost. I don't want anyone else to experience what I have gone through. Unfortunately, I had to spend $6000 replacing the entire draining system and drainage pan under the sunroof. This is an unacceptable expense for such an expensive vehicle.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2015 Volvo S60 with potential buyers. I absolutely love my car! It's fast, handles well, and performs great overall. The only issue I've had is with maintenance, and I'm not sure if it's the vehicle or the dealership I've been using. I've had to make some major repairs, including replacing spark plugs after only 18,500 miles. I've also had to replace an internal sensor and it looks like I may need to replace a cylinder as well. It's a bit disappointing since I've only had the car for less than two years and it has low mileage. However, I'm grateful that these repairs are covered under warranty. Once the car is back to its best, it's a great purchase. I'm just starting to wonder if I got a bit unlucky with my car. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I purchased this car with the expectation that it would last me a long time. Unfortunately, the acceleration sensor malfunctioned, causing the car to stall during takeoff, which was a very dangerous situation. The repair cost me around $250-$300. Additionally, the transmission has been slipping since I bought the car in 2007 when it was already 4 years old. Despite taking excellent care of the car, the problem has only gotten worse over time. Recently, I heard a strange clanking noise and discovered that I needed a new drive shaft, which cost me $1400.00 to repair. I have decided to sell the car to avoid spending thousands on a new transmission. I have also noticed that the car is using more gas as time goes on. In my experience, I would not recommend this car and suggest considering a Honda or Toyota instead. Please be aware that it may require significant maintenance and repairs.

I have a 2012 Volvo S60 and unfortunately experienced some issues with it. During the warranty period, the piston rings needed to be replaced. At 91000 miles, the car began to shake violently and I took it to the nearest Volvo dealer. They informed me that I needed a new engine because 3 spark plugs had their electrode tips fall out and score the cylinders. I reached out to corporate Volvo to express my concerns and while they apologized for the inconvenience, they were unable to offer any financial assistance. Despite escalating the issue through 2 levels of management, I still did not receive any assistance. It's worth noting that the car had previously had the piston rings and strut plates replaced. I have owned 5 other cars (Honda and Acuras) and have run them all past 100k miles without ever having to replace an engine. Unfortunately, this experience has cost me 5 grand, but I hope that by sharing my story, others can learn from it before their next car purchase.

Over the past 2 years, I've had the pleasure of driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Nissan Sentra, and now my beloved Volvo S60. When my wife and I sat in the S40, we knew we didn't want another small car. After taking the S60 for a test drive, we were absolutely hooked - it was love at first sight! This car is not just a car, it's a driving machine. Coming from a Nissan that dragged us down the road, the S60 gives us a smooth and enjoyable ride. Even though we had to stop for gas on the way home, at $3.65 a gallon, it only took $44 to fill the tank. It's moments like these that make us remember why we fell in love with this car in the first place. We couldn't stop smiling on the drive home!
