Volvo S60 problems

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.
The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.
The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

Common Volvo S60 problems
The Volvo S60 is a popular luxury sedan, but like any vehicle, it can have its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Volvo S60, based on complaints from owners:
- Software issues: There have been reports of software problems in the Volvo S60, particularly with the vehicle connectivity module (VCM) that sends location information to the emergency services after a collision. This issue affects cars built between 26 September 2018 and 30 October 2018, and can be fixed with a software update at any Volvo dealer.
- Loose rear suspension nuts: Some Volvo S60s built between 25 September 2018 and 1 April 2019 may have loose nuts and screws on the rear suspension. If your car is affected, contact your local dealer for a check and replacement if necessary.
- Automatic emergency braking (AEB) system: There have been reports of the AEB system not applying the brakes when it should, particularly in V60, S90, V90, XC40, XC60, and XC90 models built after 21 January 2019. A software update can fix this issue, and affected owners should have been contacted by Volvo. However, it's always a good idea to check with your local retailer for further information.
- ABS light illuminated: The ABS light may be illuminated on the dashboard, indicating a problem with the ABS control module. This is a relatively common issue on the S60, and the only solution is to replace the entire failed control module.
- Acceleration hesitation: Some Volvo S60 owners have reported hesitation when accelerating, which may be accompanied by idle engine issues and an illuminated check engine light. This problem can be caused by a failed mass airflow sensor (MAF), which will need to be replaced.
- Fuel leaks: Fuel leaks are a serious issue in the Volvo S60, particularly in models built between 2010 and 2018. These leaks can be caused by high-pressure fuel lines not being installed correctly, and can lead to a fire risk if not addressed quickly. It's important to check your high-pressure fuel lines and replace them if necessary.
- Engine seizure: Some early examples of the Volvo S60 may have an incorrectly installed radiator hose, leading to a loss of coolant and engine seizure. If you notice your engine overheating or seizing, it's important to address this issue immediately by replacing the radiator hose.
- Unusual smell inside car: An unusual smell inside the car, accompanied by an engine warning light and hesitation when accelerating, can indicate a serious problem in Volvo S60s with 2.0 ltr engines. This issue affects around 70,000 Volvos in the UK and can lead to a petrol fire if not addressed quickly.
- Exhaust system problems: There have been reports of exhaust system problems in the Volvo S60, particularly in 2.0-litre diesel models. These issues can lead to failures of the heated rear screen and the radar system, which helps cruise control to maintain a set distance from the car in front.
- Airbags not deploying correctly: There have been reports of airbags not deploying correctly during accidents in the Volvo S60. It's important to check with a Volvo dealer to make sure your car isn't affected by this issue.
In general, the Volvo S60 has a reputation for reliability, with the brand finishing in 11th place out of 31 manufacturers included in the latest reliability survey by What Car?. However, as with any vehicle, it's important to be aware of common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of your car.
Is the Volvo S60 a reliable car?
The 2024 Volvo S60 has a predicted reliability score of 71 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
What are the problems with a Volvo S60?
If you are having performance problems with your S60, the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) is known to get blocked by a carbon build up. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor also gets a build up. Poor engine idling, bad starting and lack of power/acceleration are all symptoms of these issues.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-03
- VIN: YV4612UM0G2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: In November of 2021, I purchased my dream car, a 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country, proud to own a vehicle from a company known for their safe and reliable vehicles. In April of 2022, a class action case ([XXX], et al., v. Volvo Car USA, LLC, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, and Volvo Personvagnar AB) was issued against Volvo due to a KNOWN-TO-VOLVO DESIGN FLAW in their engines which could lead to engine failure. The case was settled out of court in early 2023 and Volvo issued an extended warranty for vehicles owners to take preventative measures against potential engine failure. Although my car is listed under the extended warranty, I was never sent any notice of it from Volvo. On [XXX], while driving on a highway, at speed limit, my 2016 Volvo s60 Cross Country's engine failed. I learned about the Extended Warranty from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Quality Bulletin (Extended Warranty P10183: I5T Oil Consumption Replace; Model Year 20132016 S60, 2015-2016 V60, V60CC and XC60, 2016 XC70, S60CC and S60L) while researching the issue with my car online. I contacted Volvo Customer Care to ask why I was not sent notice and what they could do. I was told that to open a case with Volvo I would need a diagnostic from a dealership. On August 5, 2024, I took my car in for a diagnostic at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, IL, from who I also purchased the car in 2021. August 6, 2024 I received a partial diagnostic and was told that they would require 10x the original diagnostic price to find the root of the issue in the engine. On the same day, I called Volvo customer care and opened a case. After weeks of little to no communication, on September 3 Volvo denied my case. I was not provided any opportunity to communicate over the phone with my case manager at Volvo - only after she sent me the decision did I receive a call from her to learn Volvo does not care about my side of the story. - Summary: Yesterday I took my one year old granddaughter to North Carolina, which is an hour and a half drive away. We had breakfast with family members and I loaded her into the back seat. When I closed the door it looked as if the door closed, but as I began to drive, the door swung open. I attempted to close the door again, and the latch would not connect to the hook inside of the driver side rear door. I ended up needing to have my son sit in the back seat and hold the door closed the entire ride home (an hour and a half) to make sure that the door would not open again. I am currently driving my "new" car with a ratchet strap going from door to door to hold the door closed so that I can go to work. I found information stating that there was a recall on the Volvo S60 (2017) but when I enter my VIN nothing displays. I just bought the vehicle in February and the dealership is telling me that this will cost me $450 to repair on my MAX CARE warranty. Why? When the vehicle had a recall on it in 2020 that obviously was never addressed, prior to me purchasing it.

- Summary: Since we purchased the car in December, water was observed on occasion streaking down the inside of the windshield. The headliner is damp after rain, and is stained from water as a result. Additionally defrost/defog wasn’t working, and my son reported having to pull over and wait for the rain to stop so he could drive with the windows down in order to be able to see the road. INCREDIBLY unsafe/unable to drive in the rain. I recently applied pressure to the inside of the windshield with my fingertips by the A-pillars on both driver and passenger side to test the seal and visually confirmed the windshield was lifting off of the frame, revealing a broken seal along the top and sides of the windshield.

- Date Complaint: 2024-07-07
- VIN: YV1622FS5C2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Discovered that my engine is burning oil. There was no warning from my vehicle or from Volvo (during regular maintenance) that this was happening. It was just sudden that the check engine light went on and I checked the oil and found that it was basically empty. Volvo confirmed that the engine is burning oil and that this model and make was discovered to have this engine issue. Volvo did not offer a solution other than to buy a new vehicle to replace this one. In my research online, this problem is common for this model and make 2012 S60 T5, may other have reported the same issue and it seems that there is a recall for this problem but my vehicle (VIN) does not report this to be a problem for my car. I’m not sure what to do.

The car stalled after leaving a stop sign so I wasn't going fast. I spoke to my local mechanic and he had another Volvo S60 T5 in his shop with the same issue showing up but that owner was lucky enough to not have the engine destroyed in the process. From what he is saying is that every other car has some kind of timing belt protection that the Volvo S60 is missing. In searching the Internet this is a very common issue that occurs. I registered a complaint with Volvo today.

I have owned many BMWs, Audi, Acura and various other cars and SUVs, but the S60 is the perfect balance of comfort and fun to drive. The old Volvo stereotypes are long gone. While it may not have the track or tech specs of a 3 series (like 50/50 weight distribution), it excels at daily driving by perfectly balancing performance and comfort. The S60 is smooth, quiet, composed, solid, quick, and very comfortable with superb seats and firm suspension that is never harsh. I highly recommend the Polestar modification that makes the vehicle faster, reduces throttle/pedal travel and makes power available more immediately. A loaded 325 hp S60 is thousands less than a loaded 4 cyl BMW.

Best car I have owned! The car is so smooth and there's no wobble from the front end. It tracks very well and is an absolute pleasure to drive. Would I buy another Volvo? Absolutely! I take very good care of my vehicles and pride myself on that. If the car breaks down, it won't be from neglect. When you want to sell your vehicle, make sure to show the service records. You can't argue about price with a well-maintained vehicle.

I wrote this review to help others who are considering the 2021 S60 T-8 Hybrid in Pebble Grey with black interior. As someone who always reads reviews before making a purchase, I wanted to share my experience. Overall, this car is an excellent value and one of the best sedans on the market. While there are a couple of minor issues, such as the lack of a ventilated seat option and the design of the FOB, these are outweighed by the car's many strengths. Compared to an Audi A6, the Volvo S60 T-8 is very similar and in some ways superior. The T-8 is faster than the Audi and has much more comfortable seats. In terms of interior and exterior design, both cars are equally great looking. However, the T-8 has superior technology, including a large touch screen infotainment system and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system that provides a better sound experience than Audi's Bang & Olufsen system. While the Bowers & Wilkins option is a $3,200 upgrade, the base Harman Kardon system is also a great option. As someone who doesn't put many miles on their car, I decided to try a hybrid and the T-8 has exceeded my expectations. Overall, I highly recommend the 2021 S60 T-8 Hybrid.I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the T-8. It's a fantastic car that handles really well and is very practical for daily driving. Plus, where I live, there are free plugins available which is a great bonus! I also wanted to mention that the T-8 is surprisingly quick, especially in Polestar mode (which is definitely worth the $1,200 price tag). It's a great option if you're looking to beat out Audis, Mercedes, and BMWs. I hope this information helps you make a decision on whether to buy or lease!

Firstly, I would like to mention a few things that I think could be improved. It would be great to have wireless charging and an automatic closing trunk, as these are features that are commonly expected. The infotainment screen is a bit small and the navigation system can be a bit clunky. Additionally, the cost of a sunglasses holder at $72 seems a bit steep. Lastly, I would prefer firmer brakes. Now, onto the positives! I highly recommend the Polestar Optimization upgrade for this car. In my everyday driving, I can get about 25 miles of all-electric range without having to stomp on the accelerator, which is more than enough for my ~9 mile commute (one-way). The interior is luxurious, with nearly every surface feeling like the highest quality. While other manufacturers were not willing to negotiate during the summer 2021 car shortage, Volvo offered many incentives and 1.99% financing. Additionally, you can receive a $5600 federal tax credit for this plug-in hybrid. Although I had hoped to get a true R-Design rather than the

If you haven't already, it's a good idea to have the suspension checked or greased to prevent it from needing to be replaced. I was told that this is a common issue with Volvo s60. On the bright side, the interior is very comfortable, especially with the heated power seats on cold mornings. The sound system is also great, even though it's just the standard version. And of course, the safety features, including all the airbags, provide peace of mind on the road.

Vehicle year: 2020
I purchased a 2019 Volvo S60 brand new and it has been in the shop twice for multiple days. From the day I bought it, the media console was a bit glitchy. However, the first time I took it in was when the car died as I was switching lanes causing a 'service needed' light to turn on. Volvo fixed the issue and also took care of the rear suspension recall without prompting. Although I still experienced minor issues with the media console, I scheduled an appointment to have it checked. Unfortunately, I missed the appointment and a few days later, the check engine light came on. The vehicle currently has less than 4,000 miles on it. I haven't gotten the car back yet, but Volvo assured me that they will take care of the issue. Although I was disappointed with the loaner car provided, I am confident that Volvo will resolve the issue and I still love the car. After test driving BMWs and Audis, I was immediately sold on this vehicle. The S60 version has a great look, just enough power, and excellent safety features. The interior is decent, and the tech is impressive when it works. Although the gas mileage is average and the trunk space is limited, overall, I am thrilled with this vehicle. I was even considering becoming a Volvo enthusiast, with my only regret being that I chose the sedan over the SUV. However, after speaking with multiple late-model Volvo owners who have had to replace their cars, and reading accounts of similar issues on forums dating back to 2016, I am now disillusioned with this car brand. Despite salespeople's reassurances that this version of the car is brand new and that any car can have computer issues, I no longer have faith in Volvo.

I really love my car! It's so beautiful both inside and out, and it's got great traction control and a peppy turbo. However, I did notice that it started using oil, which concerned me. I was told that this is normal with turbo engines, but it got worse over time. I contacted the dealership, even though my warranty had expired, and they agreed to see it. While they initially seemed unaware of the issue, I showed them research indicating that this is a known problem with some Volvo models. They agreed to do an oil consumption test, but asked me to come back in 3000 miles. I was worried about running out of oil, but they told me not to add any. I kept an eye on the oil level and returned after 2000 miles, only to find that it was barely on the dipstick. I also had a TSB that I had obtained from a local shop, which confirmed that my car was affected. Although the dealership charged me $150 for tax, they did provide me with a free loaner car. However, it has now been 7 days and my car is still sitting untouched. I was told that they were waiting to hear from their territory rep. I provided them with all of my oil change receipts, except for 2 that I couldn't find. Volvo has had my car a total of 14 times, which is concerning. While I love the look of my car, I'm disappointed that it has a bad engine. I hope that others don't experience the same issues that I have had. I expected more from Volvo.

It was quite challenging to keep the car running smoothly, as it required an average of $250 per month for maintenance. Unfortunately, it experienced a variety of issues such as memory loss, brake booster failure, suspension and transmission problems, turbo issues, oil leaks, multiple brake problems, and wiring issues. Additionally, it was difficult to find someone who knew how to work on it, and the dealer often suggested replacing the mass air flow sensor. As a result, the car lost $15k in value over two years and continued to depreciate. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in.

I have owned my T6 for a little over a year now and while there have been some issues, I am confident in the warranty and the ability to have them taken care of with little or no cost. Although I knew purchasing a Volvo would not equate into a performance-oriented drive, I am still satisfied with my purchase. While there may be some body roll and road noise, I find the car comfortable and quiet. I appreciate the sleek design and overall appearance of the car. While there have been some odd shifting habits between 40 and 50 mph, I am confident that these can be resolved. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and look forward to enjoying it for years to come.

I have owned my pre-owned 2002 S60 since 2007 with 90,000K on the clock, and I am proud to say that it has been a reliable car. Despite the common troubles that many people have experienced with their S60s, I have not encountered any unexpected issues. As a loyal Volvo customer, I have always gone to the dealership for every single part and service, and it has paid off. The only replacements I have needed were a fuel filter and muffler due to rust, which is common in New England. With 170,000K on the clock, my S60 is still running smoothly and I am confident that it will continue to do so.
