Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common Nissan Maxima problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Nissan Maxima cars, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission Malfunction and Failure:
    • Owners have reported jerking when shifting, rough gear transitions, vehicle stalling, and slow acceleration, ultimately leading to total transmission failure. This problem is common in 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima models, typically occurring between 90,000 to over 100,000 miles. Some cases have been severe enough to render the cars undrivable, posing safety risks.
  • Ignition Coil Failure:
    • Failed ignition coils can trigger the check engine light, affecting the engine's performance. This issue is reported in late-model Nissan Maximas and can be a source of concern for owners. While not catastrophic, it can lead to performance issues and the need for timely repairs.
  • Power Steering Failure:
    • The power steering pressure hose can fail, resulting in power steering fluid leaks. This problem requires the replacement of the power steering pressure hose to resolve the issue.
  • Front Seat Wear:
    • Front seats in Nissan Maxima cars are known to wear down quickly at the sides, although the exact cause of this problem is unknown. Owners can choose to live with the issue or opt to have the seats re-covered or replaced to address the wear and tear.
  • Idling Problems:
    • Irregular idling, where the engine does not maintain constant revs, is often linked to a blocked Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Cleaning the MAF sensor can help resolve this issue and restore proper engine performance.

These common problems reported by Nissan Maxima owners highlight key areas of concern that may impact the performance, safety, and comfort of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Nissan Maxima.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP3EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While pulling into a parking space, I heard my engine racing. Immediately, I felt the car lurch forward. To avoid misapplying my foot to the gas pedal, I withdrew both my feet to the floor, next to the seat. The car continued forward at a fast rate. The car stopped going forward after it struck s building. However, the tires kept spinning, especially the front left tire. The engine ran briefly, until it stopped spontaneously. A few days previously, while driving at about 40 miles per hour on level ground, I felt the gas pedal to be unresponsive. Then it quickly reengaged. I mentioned this to my husband and he suggested that there may have been an air bubble in the fuel line. I don't know if the two events are related. Also, possibly related, I stopped using cruise control, because the car would surge and lapse during use. My insurance company is pursuing spontaneous acceleration. I visited my primary care physician the afternoon of the accident and was diagnosed with whiplash.

I love the car! It has great power and handles really well. I'm 6'4 and have good room, although I do find the gas and brake pedals a bit too close. Additionally, after washing and waxing the car, I noticed some new chips, which was a bit disappointing. However, overall I'm really happy with it!

I'm so excited to share my experience with my first Nissan, the Maxima! I absolutely love the sleek and cool look of the car, both inside and out. However, I've had a few small issues with it in the 9 months and 16,000 miles that I've owned it. I had to bring it to the dealership for some strange issues, such as the black piece behind the passenger window falling off, the cruise control toggle cracking, and the plastic lining that protects the front window coming loose. Although the dealership tried to fix the rattling in the passenger side, it still persists. Additionally, the paint on the corner of the bumper just under the hood where it connects to the front headlights has begun to chip. While this issue is not ideal, I'm hopeful that the dealership will resolve it soon. I'm not sure if I just got unlucky with a lemon or if others have experienced similar issues, but I still love my car despite these minor nuisances.

I bought this car when it was 2 years old and have had it for 5 years now. Unfortunately, I've experienced a number of issues with it, such as the steering wheel motor for the telescoping feature stopping working. The dealership quoted me $1,000 to fix it, which is quite expensive. I've noticed that this seems to be a common problem with Maximas, which is disappointing. Additionally, the alternator went out while I was driving on the 110 fwy in Los Angeles, which was quite inconvenient. Every time I take the car to the dealer, it seems to be something new that needs fixing, such as the lower ARMs, front struts, rear shocks, and air filter. I took my car to Firestone to get the AC leak repaired, as the dealer was asking for an exorbitant amount. While I wouldn't say this is a $40,000 car, I would recommend leasing it rather than buying it, or perhaps considering a different brand altogether. I purchased the car certified, thinking it would provide extra protection, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. In contrast, my 1999 Toyota has had far fewer problems. I bought my car at Nissan Auto Nation Power on Rosecrans near the 405 fwy, but I don't think the issues I've experienced are specific to that dealership. I believe the manufacturer and dealerships share responsibility for these problems. I hope my post will help someone avoid the same issues I've had with Nissan and the Maxima in particular.

The car was running well until it reached 80K miles. However, it never achieved the advertised mileage of 23 miles per gallon, even at its best. Unfortunately, after the warranty ended at 36K miles, I had to replace several parts, including the MAF, rear brake caliper, alternator, battery, all ignition coils, 1 O2 sensor, and 2 sets of tires. I have been struggling with the check engine light for two months now, and despite spending $800, it is still on. The dealership has been replacing one part after another, but the issue persists. Now they are asking for an additional $2,000 to replace both catalytic converters, which they refuse to do under the emission warranty. I contacted Nissan Corp., but they were unable to assist me. It's disappointing to receive such poor customer service and loyalty. Unfortunately, this will be the last Nissan that my family purchases!

I purchased this car brand new in white diamond pearl with a variety of features including heated seats, a sunroof, and a Bose 6cd changer. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car such as a rattling noise that began around 30,000 miles. Despite bringing it to the dealer, they were unable to hear the noise. Additionally, the rear struts needed to be replaced before reaching 30,000 miles and the tires wore out quickly despite being rotated every 4,000 miles with an oil change. However, after reaching 100,000 miles, the gas mileage improved to 25mpg. The Bose speakers and radio/6cd changer failed around 24,000 miles and were replaced with a new one. Although I expected better quality for the price of $32,000, I understand that sometimes issues can arise. Unfortunately, the warranty only lasted until 110,000 miles and I have had to replace another radio with an aftermarket one. I also had to get a tune-up for $750 and replace the front and rear hub and bearings for over $1200. I had to get new front struts for $500 and new tires every year for $700 per set. Currently, I am experiencing issues with the throttle, which is disappointing.

I traded my '06 Maxima SE for the '11 S. I absolutely love the styling, both inside and out. It looks very classy in black. The power is great, although there is some torque steer. The comfort is fantastic, and the inside controls are much more user-friendly than on the '06. The only downside is that the trunk space is less, which could be an issue for some. However, the radio is of much better quality than the '06. It's a fun car to drive, and it handles well. On the downside, under heavy acceleration, the engine can be quite noisy, which can be irritating. Additionally, there is some significant wind noise starting at around 40 mph and above. The ride isn't as smooth as my '06 either, but that could be due to the Goodyear Eagles. On windy days, the car can be buffeted a bit. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase!

This car has been in my family since '98 and we've never had any serious problems, *knock on wood*. It's fully factory except for a K&N air filter. The gas mileage isn't too bad - I get about 17 mpg in the city on regular and about 28 mpg on the highway. The engine is more than sufficient and it currently has 112,000 miles on it, still almost as good as new. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone in the used car market!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Maxima. I bought it after a 2-year lease with 35k miles on it, and now, 7 years later, it has over 190k miles on it! I have to say, this is hands down the best car I have ever had. I've only had to do normal maintenance and wear and tear, and the only major thing I've had to replace was the alternator about 3 years ago. Even though I'm hard on cars, this Maxima has definitely held up. The only issues I've had were the check engine light coming on for a bad oxygen sensor and the 6-disc player jamming up, but those were minor. It's been reliable in all weather, but unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye because we need a larger vehicle. Overall, I highly recommend the Maxima!

Your car has 191,000 miles and it's still running smoothly. It's the most reliable car you've ever owned. It's surprising to see people spending $600-$700 on ignition coils. Although you had to replace four of them, it was a simple process that only required a couple of screws and a plug. You got them for $50 each and installed them yourself, even though you're not a mechanic. You plan to keep driving this car until the engine dies, which you don't see happening anytime soon. It's a great car, and if you're considering buying one, I highly recommend it. You won't regret it.

I test drove the Maxima SR just before the end of 2016 hoping to get a good end of year deal. Although I didn't get the price I was looking for, I had a great experience driving the car. Most likely, I will buy one here in 2017. The SR package looks very sharp in my opinion and the car drives great. As someone who is 6'2
