Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common Nissan Maxima problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Nissan Maxima cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Malfunction and Failure:
- Owners have reported jerking when shifting, rough gear transitions, vehicle stalling, and slow acceleration, ultimately leading to total transmission failure. This problem is common in 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima models, typically occurring between 90,000 to over 100,000 miles. Some cases have been severe enough to render the cars undrivable, posing safety risks.
- Ignition Coil Failure:
- Failed ignition coils can trigger the check engine light, affecting the engine's performance. This issue is reported in late-model Nissan Maximas and can be a source of concern for owners. While not catastrophic, it can lead to performance issues and the need for timely repairs.
- Power Steering Failure:
- The power steering pressure hose can fail, resulting in power steering fluid leaks. This problem requires the replacement of the power steering pressure hose to resolve the issue.
- Front Seat Wear:
- Front seats in Nissan Maxima cars are known to wear down quickly at the sides, although the exact cause of this problem is unknown. Owners can choose to live with the issue or opt to have the seats re-covered or replaced to address the wear and tear.
- Idling Problems:
- Irregular idling, where the engine does not maintain constant revs, is often linked to a blocked Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Cleaning the MAF sensor can help resolve this issue and restore proper engine performance.
These common problems reported by Nissan Maxima owners highlight key areas of concern that may impact the performance, safety, and comfort of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Nissan Maxima.

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N4AA5AP3EC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While pulling into a parking space, I heard my engine racing. Immediately, I felt the car lurch forward. To avoid misapplying my foot to the gas pedal, I withdrew both my feet to the floor, next to the seat. The car continued forward at a fast rate. The car stopped going forward after it struck s building. However, the tires kept spinning, especially the front left tire. The engine ran briefly, until it stopped spontaneously. A few days previously, while driving at about 40 miles per hour on level ground, I felt the gas pedal to be unresponsive. Then it quickly reengaged. I mentioned this to my husband and he suggested that there may have been an air bubble in the fuel line. I don't know if the two events are related. Also, possibly related, I stopped using cruise control, because the car would surge and lapse during use. My insurance company is pursuing spontaneous acceleration. I visited my primary care physician the afternoon of the accident and was diagnosed with whiplash.

I'm so glad to hear that you're interested in the new Maxima! It sounds like you had a great experience with your 2012 model, and I can definitely understand why. These cars are not only stylish, but also sporty and reliable. They drive like a sports car, which is really exciting, and the power of these cars is truly impressive. Overall, I think the Maxima is a fantastic vehicle to own!

Vehicle year: 2021
I recently traded in my 2009 GMC Sierra that was rusting apart. After several months of searching, I finally found the perfect car. Initially, I was considering the new Camry and Altima models that offered AWD, but when I test drove the Maxima, I knew immediately that it was the one for me. I purchased a black on black SV trim with 32,000 miles so far! The Maxima is amazing for a V6 with all the rolling hills/foothills of the Appalachian mountains, averaging 27.5-28 mpg. The ride is very smooth and the seats are some of the most comfortable I've ever sat in. One of my concerns about going back to a car after driving a truck was the feeling of being on the ground and having trouble seeing around other vehicles. However, with the Maxima, I do not have that feeling and can easily see around other vehicles. The minor drawbacks/room for improvement are that I wish the headlights were set an inch or two higher and there are no memory seats (at least not in the SV trim). On the other hand, the Maxima is a sporty sedan that you won't see every 3 seconds, has great acceleration, a huge trunk, and looks, comfort, and style for days. I would definitely purchase it again!

47 yrs old and gave up on US cars. This car is really quite incredible. 3.0L V6 and it moves! Quiet and sporty, especially with my 215/55/16 tires. 98,000 miles on it but drives like 30K. The exterior design may be a little dull, but I just bought new front turn signal lights & rear tail lights to give it a sportier look.

This is a fantastic car! I have owned it for 14 years and have never had any issues with it. It is incredibly reliable and has never needed any major repairs. It is also very comfortable and stylish, and performs well in all conditions, especially in the snow. Even after all these years, I still enjoy driving it. While it may not turn as many heads as my Mercedes SLK, I cannot speak highly enough of my Maxima. It has truly been a terrific car in every way.

Vehicle year: 2005
Although I love the power of my new car, I have experienced some issues with the rotors shaking in the back end and a persistent creaking sound. Despite three attempts at repair, the issue has yet to be resolved. Additionally, there have been two recalls which have been disappointing. However, I remain confident in my car and hope that Nissan will improve their performance in addressing these issues.

Vehicle year: 2004
I am experiencing serious transmission problems with my 2004 Nissan Maxima, and the driver's side window motor and power seat motor are also not functioning. As a loyal Nissan customer for over 22 years, I am disappointed with the quality of my Maxima and have decided to switch to a different brand. This negative experience is not unique, as my daughter also faced similar issues with her 2004 Murano.
Kane Funk 2025-05-14
Vehicle year: 2004
I purchased this car with 19K miles and have since driven it up to 86K miles. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the brakes three times and the tires four times. Recently, I have had to replace the transmission and timing belt, which has cost me over $5K. I had reported transmission issues to the dealer before the extended warranty expired, but they only repaired the motor mount and the transmission failed completely after the warranty expired. Despite appealing to Nissan NA, I was not successful in getting any assistance. When I asked the local service manager why I should put in another Nissan transmission, he assured me that the problem had been fixed, but did admit that there were issues with the 2004 transmissions. For those interested, there is a class action suit for the transmission. On a positive note, my last car payment is next month, but unfortunately, I still have a large repair bill to pay.
Omari Torp 2025-05-12
Vehicle year: 2004
I purchased this car with great excitement, as I have always been a loyal Nissan customer and have had nothing but positive experiences with their vehicles. The car I purchased had a double sunroof and had been customized by the previous owner, which added to my enthusiasm. Despite the high mileage of 130,000, the car was running well at the time of purchase. However, after driving it for only 20,000 miles, I began to experience issues such as the key getting stuck in the ignition, the CD player skipping and cutting out, and difficulty starting the car. Additionally, the car has developed problems with switching gears and even shut down completely while I was driving, causing the steering wheel to lock and the lights to turn off. Despite these issues, I remain confident in Nissan's reputation for quality and reliability.
