Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common Nissan Maxima problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Nissan Maxima cars, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Malfunction and Failure:
- Owners have reported jerking when shifting, rough gear transitions, vehicle stalling, and slow acceleration, ultimately leading to total transmission failure. This problem is common in 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima models, typically occurring between 90,000 to over 100,000 miles. Some cases have been severe enough to render the cars undrivable, posing safety risks.
- Ignition Coil Failure:
- Failed ignition coils can trigger the check engine light, affecting the engine's performance. This issue is reported in late-model Nissan Maximas and can be a source of concern for owners. While not catastrophic, it can lead to performance issues and the need for timely repairs.
- Power Steering Failure:
- The power steering pressure hose can fail, resulting in power steering fluid leaks. This problem requires the replacement of the power steering pressure hose to resolve the issue.
- Front Seat Wear:
- Front seats in Nissan Maxima cars are known to wear down quickly at the sides, although the exact cause of this problem is unknown. Owners can choose to live with the issue or opt to have the seats re-covered or replaced to address the wear and tear.
- Idling Problems:
- Irregular idling, where the engine does not maintain constant revs, is often linked to a blocked Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Cleaning the MAF sensor can help resolve this issue and restore proper engine performance.
These common problems reported by Nissan Maxima owners highlight key areas of concern that may impact the performance, safety, and comfort of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Nissan Maxima.

Nissan Maxima 2014

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N4AA5AP3EC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While pulling into a parking space, I heard my engine racing. Immediately, I felt the car lurch forward. To avoid misapplying my foot to the gas pedal, I withdrew both my feet to the floor, next to the seat. The car continued forward at a fast rate. The car stopped going forward after it struck s building. However, the tires kept spinning, especially the front left tire. The engine ran briefly, until it stopped spontaneously. A few days previously, while driving at about 40 miles per hour on level ground, I felt the gas pedal to be unresponsive. Then it quickly reengaged. I mentioned this to my husband and he suggested that there may have been an air bubble in the fuel line. I don't know if the two events are related. Also, possibly related, I stopped using cruise control, because the car would surge and lapse during use. My insurance company is pursuing spontaneous acceleration. I visited my primary care physician the afternoon of the accident and was diagnosed with whiplash.

Vehicle year: 2017
This car is amazing for the price! It's super comfortable and quiet, and even though the CVT transmission took a bit of getting used to, it's really fun to drive. After 7 months of ownership, I've found that the Maxima is in the same category as other full-size/large cars like the Toyota Avalon, Kia Credenza, and Chevy Impala. While the interior is a bit smaller than those cars, the thick doors make it incredibly safe. The Platinum level interior is nicer and better laid out than many cars that cost tens of thousands of dollars more. The Bose sound system is the best I've ever heard in a car. I've gotten used to the CVT and the car's pickup is amazing with its 300 hp. I regularly get 33 mpg on the highway even at 75 mph. After a year of ownership, I can confidently say that this is the best car I've ever owned. The heated steering wheel is an incredible luxury during the winter and warms up really fast. The entire car heats up very quickly. Overall, I highly recommend the Maxima Platinum as a luxury car with fun performance and very minor faults.

Vehicle year: 2002
I've been the proud owner of this car for 2.5 years now, and I'm happy to report that I've had no major issues with it despite having driven it for 135k miles. The power in this Maxima is simply awesome, and it always performs like a champ. I also have a 2004 Maxima, but I must say that I prefer the 2002 model a lot more.

Vehicle year: 1993
Hey there! I just wanted to say that I absolutely love this car! Everything about it is fantastic, from the sleek design to the amazing features. It runs so smoothly and I have absolutely no complaints. I highly recommend this car to anyone in the market for a new ride!

Vehicle year: 1994
I've owned three consecutive Maximas over the years: '91, '94, '03. They have been consistently reliable and fun to drive. The ONLY problems I've encountered are fuel injectors which tend to go after 120,000 miles or so. These cars are incredibly reliable. Just change the oil, throw in some brake pads when needed, and maybe a muffler over the life of the car, and you won't ever have to worry about anything else.

Vehicle year: 2003
I've owned my Maxima since 2004 and it has been an amazing car. The car is fully loaded and has a 6-speed transmission, which makes driving it fun and exciting. It's also quite fast for a family sedan. There's plenty of room in the car and trunk for my family, and it has required minimal repair work (just tires, brakes, and exhaust system). Even with 89k miles, the car still looks great and runs well. While I have noticed a slight drop in acceleration, it's to be expected with time. I would highly recommend this car to anyone in the market for a reliable and enjoyable vehicle.

Your Maxima sounds like a great car! It's impressive that you've put over 90k miles on it without any problems. Although, it might be a good idea to replace the tires sooner rather than later. It's unfortunate to hear that you're experiencing some issues now that the car has over 140k miles. It's understandable that you may not want to purchase another Nissan. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This car has a choppy ride, even though I have the platinum model. I can feel every crack in the road, which makes it uncomfortable to drive around town. In comparison, my wife's Subaru Forester provides a much smoother and more comfortable ride. While the engine and looks of this car are great, I would not recommend it if you prioritize a smooth and comfortable ride. This is just my personal opinion, though.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Maxima. I purchased it with just over 100,000 miles 2 and a half years ago and have since put 25,000 miles on it. While it's a pretty fast car and rides comfortably at high speeds, I've unfortunately had a few too many problems with it. The power steering pump died on me, the tensioners on the chain broke, and both cam shaft sensors died, which would cut all power to the car when moving. Additionally, the sunroof won't open, the climate controls won't work (including the defrosters, which isn't fun in the winter), and the CD player doesn't work. I'm also feeling the transmission shifting heavily now, which isn't good at all. Overall, I've been a bit turned off to Nissan due to these issues and will probably end up getting a different vehicle in the immediate future. Thanks for listening!

Vehicle year: 2007
Although I have owned my 2007 Maxima SE for almost 5 years, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with it. These include the replacement of the AC compressor, motor mounts, belts (due to the compressor), and AC hoses. Additionally, I have encountered occasional trouble with the keyless entry system. The cost of the 30,000 mile services is quite high at over $600. However, I am confident in my decision to choose a Nissan and believe that with proper maintenance, it will continue to serve me well.

This model is marketed as a sports sedan, but it may not live up to your expectations. The transmission can take a few seconds to downshift, and it may not respond well to aggressive driving. The brakes may fade and shudder with excessive use, and the handling may not be as smooth as you'd like. Additionally, the torque may not be as strong as you'd expect, and the turning radius and fuel economy may not be the best. It's worth noting that some drivers have reported issues with ignition sensors and check engine lights, so it's important to keep an eye on those. However, it's important to remember that every car has its strengths and weaknesses, and this model may still be a good fit for some drivers. As always, it's important to do your research and make an informed decision. Thank you for considering this model, and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
