2008 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2008 Nissan Maxima problems
The 2008 Nissan Maxima has been known to have several common engine problems that owners have reported. These issues can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and overall reliability
- Ignition Coils: The ignition coils are responsible for generating the high voltage required to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. In the 2008 Nissan Maxima, the ignition coils are prone to failure, leading to rough engine running, check engine light illumination, and even catalytic converter damage if not addressed promptly. It is recommended to replace all ignition coils when one fails, as it is likely that the others will fail soon after .
- Cam Sensors: The cam sensors in the 2008 Nissan Maxima are responsible for monitoring the positions of the camshafts as they spin. Faulty cam sensors can cause the engine to stall while driving or lead to oil leaks from the sensor itself. Replacing the cam sensors is a relatively straightforward process, requiring the removal of a 10-millimeter bolt and the sensor itself, followed by the installation of a new sensor and reconnection of the electrical connector .
- Timing Chain: The timing chain in the 2008 Nissan Maxima is prone to tensioner and guide wear, causing the chain to become loose and potentially resulting in internal engine damage. A loose timing chain can cause a tapping noise from the engine area, which should not be ignored. Replacing the timing chain is a significant job, requiring the removal of many engine components. It is recommended to keep up with regular oil changes to prevent timing chain issues .
- AC Lines: The air conditioning lines in the 2008 Nissan Maxima can leak refrigerant, causing a loss of cooling capacity. This issue can be addressed by replacing the faulty AC lines or sealing any leaks found in the system .
- Power Steering Pump: The power steering pump in the 2008 Nissan Maxima can fail, leading to difficulty steering the vehicle. Replacing the power steering pump can resolve this issue .
- Crankshaft Position Sensor: The crankshaft position sensor in the 2008 Nissan Maxima is responsible for monitoring the position and rotation of the crankshaft. A faulty crankshaft position sensor can cause starting issues, lack of power, or a check engine light. Replacing the sensor can resolve these problems .
In summary, the 2008 Nissan Maxima has several common engine problems, including ignition coil failure, cam sensor issues, timing chain wear, AC line leaks, power steering pump failure, and crankshaft position sensor faults. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help maintain the vehicle's performance and reliability.

Does the 2008 Nissan Maxima have any transmission recalls? Formally, there have been no recall notices regarding the transmission, but this doesn't mean that owners haven't reported like: Total transmission failure. Transmission stuck in gear.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-21
- VIN: 1N4AA51E29C
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: FEBRUARY 2009 I PURCHASE A 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA VIN#1N4AA51E29C....... THERE HAVE BEEN MINOR ISSUES THAT I HAVE DEALT WITH. LET ME EXPLAIN, FIRST THE MOTORS THAT MOVE THE STEERING COLUMN UP/DOWN (WARRANTY COVERED) AND IN/OUT (A $600 ESTIMATE) BOTH HAVE GONE OUT. SECONDLY, THE LEFT FRONT TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR ($186) WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY ON FEBRUARY 20, 2015 WITH MILEAGE OF 47,859. THIRDLY, THE FRONT LEFT STRUT ($142) HAD TO BE REPLACED AND BOTH FRONT STRUT MOUNTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ($176), WHICH IS A RECALL FOR SOME VEHICLES BUT NOT MINE. I'M CONFUSED BY THIS BUT LET'S MOVE ON THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I'M HAVING WITH NISSAN. TODAY THE ONLY RECALL ON MY 09 MAXIMA HAS BEEN THE ESCL, WHICH WAS REPLACED ON JULY 21, 2017 WITH 73,429 MILES OF THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED A DIFFERENT SOUND WHEN STARTING THE CAR. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE SOUND, SO I DROVE THE CAR HOME. SHORTLY AFTER, THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD STARTED BLINKING AND THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INDICATOR CAME ON. ON FEBRUARY 19, 2018, MY CAR WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO GET THE AIRBAG SYSTEM FIXED WITH 76,443 MILES ON THE CAR. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT RAN A DIAGNOSTIC REPORT ($95) FINDING CODE DCT B1018 AS A PROBLEM. THEY REPORTED THEIR FINDINGS TO ME AND GAVE AN ESTIMATE OF THE REPAIRS TO BE BETWEEN $2,000 AND $4,000, A BIG DIFFERENCE. I TALKED WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT WHAT HAD TO BE DONE TO FIX THE AIRBAG SYSTEM, HOW MUCH TIME THE REPAIRS WOULD TAKE, WHY SUCH A WIDE SPREAD IN THE FINANCIAL ESTIMATE AND WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. I LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS CONVERSATION. THE BIGGEST SURPRISE WAS LEARNING THAT NISSAN CHANGED HOW THEIR AIRBAG SYSTEM SENSORS WORKED FROM ALWAYS ON TO OFF UNTIL A SEAT WAS OCCUPIED. I WOULD FEEL MORE LIKE A VALUED CUSTOMER WHEN NISSAN PAYS 100% OF A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY 'NO FAULT' OF THE CONSUMER.

This car is very roomy for a family of four and also sporty enough to satisfy the desires of most sports car enthusiasts. I am impressed with the power and agility of this car. I considered the Honda Accord, but ultimately chose the Maxima due to its spacious interior, comfortable seats, and impressive power. It's definitely a fun car to drive!

I recently traded in my 2006 Honda Accord because I was getting bored and tired of being passed on the highway. Now, I am the one doing the passing! This car is perfect for anyone who loves a combination of luxury and high performance. I got a fully loaded one (minus nav) and it is by far the nicest car I have ever owned. The leather and Bose sound system are amazing. Although Mazda claims Zoom-Zoom, Nissan might have borrowed it from them.

I am an experienced car owner and I can confidently say that the 2008 Maxima has not met my expectations. Despite being the first owner and taking good care of the car, I have encountered several issues with it. The battery died after just over a year of use, and I have had to replace several cheap plastic parts that have broken, such as the charging ports, visors, and AC vent. These issues have been frustrating, and I believe that the Maxima could benefit from some improvements in its design and construction.
Judah Murphy 2024-05-11
This is my 6th Nissan (third Maxima) and I have had some issues with it. There is a constant rumbling vibration felt through the gas pedal and steering wheel between 20-45 mph. The dealer tried to fix it, but unfortunately, they were unable to. The representative came and explained that this is a common issue with this transmission. I was surprised to hear that this is considered normal for a $30,000 car! They tout this new transmission as seamless, but apparently, it's not. I hope Nissan will address this design flaw soon.
Elias Von 2024-04-11
The car has several issues such as wind noise, streaking wipers, creaking/binding sounds, headlight misalignment, right rear seat continually falls forward even though it's locked, air entering passenger compartment from somewhere up front, left front door handle had to be replaced as FOB signal failed, poor AM radio reception, and CVT grinding between 30 & 40 mph. Despite these issues, the car averages 14 mpg even though it travels on highways 80% of the time. It is worth noting that our Altima was far superior in terms of MPG. However, the dealership satisfactorily repaired the door handle.
