2011 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2011 Nissan Maxima problems

The 2011 Nissan Maxima, a four-door sedan known for its engine power and smooth ride, has been reported to have a few common problems. While the car is generally reliable, with high reliability scores and a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating from RepairPal, some issues have been noted by owners.

One of the most common problems is related to the air conditioning (AC) system. Specifically, the crimped AC hose can leak refrigerant, causing low pressure in the system and resulting in warm air blowing from the AC. This issue has been reported in the 2001 and 2004-2012 models, typically occurring around 87,000 miles. Repair costs can vary, but some owners have reported spending between $200 and $400, depending on the replacement part's price tag and labor costs.

Another significant issue with the 2011 Nissan Maxima is related to the transmission. Nissan Maxima transmission problems are well-known among car owners, with vehicles jerking when shifting and experiencing rough gear transitions, stalling, and slow acceleration. In some cases, the transmission can fail entirely, leading to dangerous driving conditions and the need for a total replacement. These transmission problems are particularly common in the 2004-2006 models, occurring around 90,000 to over 100,000 miles.

While the 2011 model year is generally reliable, there were a few transmission failures at the 100,000-mile mark, but they were rare.

Despite these issues, the 2011 Nissan Maxima remains a popular choice for those seeking a reliable and powerful sedan. Regular maintenance, including CVT fluid changes every 50,000 miles, can help extend the life of the transmission and prevent some of these common problems.

What is the common problem with Nissan Maxima?

A prevalent concern among Nissan Maxima owners is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning (AC) hose, often causing the AC to blow warm air. This issue is notably frequent in 2001 and 2004-2012 models, typically surfacing around 87,000 miles.

How many miles can a 2011 Nissan Maxima last?

about 200,000 miles

A Nissan Maxima can last about 200,000 miles on average, but this of course depends on how well it is maintained. A poorly maintained Maxima has a significantly higher chance to develop major engine and transmission problems before hitting 100,000 – 150,000 miles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP3BC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: We are the original owners of a 2011 Nissan Maxima. The dashboard material is deteriorating, creating a sticky and shiny patch across the base of the windshield which is distracting and highly reflective creating glare from the sun and bright lights impeding the ability to safely drive. The dashboard is also cracking and releasing small parts of black dashboard material throughout the car and the passengers. Online research shows this problem has been reported by many Nissan vehicle owners, at our most recent Nissan service appointment, we asked for assistance to have the part replaced and was told we would have to call Nissan directly to request the repair as it was not a recall item. We called Nissan's Consumer Affairs and was told there is no support from Nissan to provide assistance and any repair we desired would be at our own cost. Additionally, in our online research there are pending class action lawsuits for this part to be replaced by the manufacturer. There is potential health hazards to the exposure of the deteriorating dashboard. We have NOT contacted our insurance company for a complaint or repair at this time. It was first noticed about 1 year ago while I was cleaning the car as the duster stuck to the dash in that area and we are now getting to the issue as it continues to further deteriorate.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-16
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP7BC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: ON THE NIGHT OF FEBRUARY 16, MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING MY 2011 NISSAN MAXIMA WHEN SHE CAME TO A STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, SHE MOVED HER FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE WHEN THE VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN WOULD NOT MOVE. SHE APPLIED HER FOOT TO THE ACCELERATOR SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE VEHICLE STILL WOULD NOT MOVE. AFTER SEVERAL MORE ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE JERKED FORWARD IN A VIOLENT MANNER BUT LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO OTHER CAR AHEAD OF HER OR I'M AFRAID A MORE SERIOUS EVENT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED. THIS ALL HAPPENED RATHER ABRUPTLY, WITHOUT ANY ADVANCE WARNING OR INDICATION OF A POTENTIAL PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL NISSAN SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME A CODE INDICATED 'TRANSMISSION FLUID PRESSURE LOW' (EVEN THOUGH IT CONTAINED PLENTY OF FLUID) AND ADVISED A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WAS NEEDED AT A COST OF $7,138. THIS WAS THE DIAGNOSIS DESPITE NO DASHBOARD WARNING OR SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT INDICATOR, AS I INDICATED ABOVE. UPON RETURNING HOME AND RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ONLINE, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON. I LEARNED THAT NISSAN HAS HAD MAJOR ISSUES WITH THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT), INCLUDING SEVERAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AND OTHER LEGAL MATTERS WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY RESULTED IN NISSAN EXTENDING THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY ON 2003-2010 NISSAN VEHICLES AND SETTLING OTHER LAWSUITS FOR NEWER MODEL VEHICLES. HOWEVER, MODEL YEARS 2011 AND 2012 WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THESE SETTLEMENTS DESPITE HAVING THE SAME EXACT CVT. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO NISSAN NORTH AMERICA BUT THEY HAVE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED LIABILITY OR RESPONSIBILITY. SUCH A SHAME BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAS NOT HAD ANY ISSUES UNTIL THIS INCIDENT. IT ONLY HAS 106,000 MILES BUT NOW I'M WORRIED ABOUT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF IT IS BEING DRIVEN.
2021-03-31

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-15
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP2BC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY CAR IS VERY RELIABLE UNTIL NOW WITH ONLY 105,000 MILES? MY PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT SEPTEMBER 2020 WHEN I STARTED TO HEAR MY CAR MAKE A ROUGH SOUND SUDDENLY, LIKE A WINDING NOISE WHEN I ACCELERATE AND WHEN I LET OFF THE GAS AS WELL. I DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF IT UNTIL I TOOK IT TO A NISSAN DEALER TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT. THEY CALLED ME THE NEXT DAY TELL ME I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND ITS GOING TO BE AROUND $5,500. WHICH I DON'T HAVE ESPECIALLY IN THIS PANDEMIC. ALSO THEY TOLD ME IF I GET THE NEW TRANSMISSION IT ONLY COMES WITH 1 YEAR WARRANTY. NISSAN ONLY COVERS IT UNTIL 60,000 MILES WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE PEOPLE BUYING A NEW NISSAN EXPECT IT TO GO FURTHER THEN THAT! MY ISSUE IS THAT NISSAN IS PUTTING IN THESE FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS KNOWING THAT IT WILL FAIL SOON AND ONLY GIVE YOU 1 YEAR WARRANTY IF YOU DO REPLACE IT AFTER PAY 5,500?
2021-03-04

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-03
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP6BC
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE

I TOOK IT TO LITHIA NISSAN IN FRESNO CA ON BLACKSTONE AND THEY TOLD ME THE CVT BELT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED THEREBY CAUSING THE CAR TO NEED A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION AT $5738.96. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION.

Negative 2011 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Arnold Kris 2024-10-06

I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima which I bought brand new in November 2010. The CVT transmission shut down while driving! The car has only 53,146 miles and no other mechanical problems. I found out Nissan extended warranties on 2007-2010 select vehicles including the Maxima due to CVT transmission problems. My car was towed to Nissan early Monday morning. I was given a toll free number to corporate office for possible assistance on Tuesday and they kept my car through Friday before coming back to tell me they would not be assisting me. I asked what criteria was used to make that determination. The agent stated the same info I had given them on Tuesday morning, i.e., how many miles are on the vehicle, the warranty, etc. They had no intention of assisting. What a waste! It is all about the dollar. The car is cosmetic, just looks good, that's it! She said it was 15 months outside of warranty when in fact I bought an extended 6 year/100000 mile warranty from Nissan when I bought the car. The warranty expired 3 months ago in November 2016. They stated they did not see the warranty in their system and it must have been an outside warranty sold to me by Nissan. All CVT transmission cars should be recalled. It is like a ticking time bomb. They are waiting for something drastic to happen before being forced to recall. What a waste!

  2. Ricardo Murazik 2024-09-05

Great car except for CVT transmission. My transmission went dead at 72,000 miles. Unfortunately, two other rebuilt transmissions were also garbage.

  3. Lester Sporer 2024-05-12

This car does not meet my expectations. The ride is bumpy and you can feel every bump on the road, even on smooth surfaces. The interior is not user-friendly, with the power window controls located on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, making it difficult to adjust the mirrors while driving. Additionally, the car lacks memory seats and heated mirrors, which is disappointing for a car at this price point. However, the car has good gas mileage.

  4. Linwood Larkin 2024-04-22

  5. Heber Hamill 2024-04-14

The safety features of the 2011 Nissan Maxima are not up to par, and it may not be the best choice for those prioritizing safety. In the event of a minor car accident, there is a risk of major injuries. It is important to consider these factors before purchasing this model or any Nissan vehicle. Please exercise caution and make an informed decision. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Positive 2011 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Norbert McCullough 2025-01-09

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you've had a great experience with it so far. The AC is super cold and the cooled driver seat sounds like a great feature. It's awesome that the bluetooth recognizes who gets in the car more and automatically connects to the most frequent driver. The stock stereo is also amazing, especially the BOSE. You really don't know how good it is until you turn it up to just two or three bars below max volume and set the equalizer like you want. It's great to hear that the car has plenty of power and that the handling is still superb, even as the tires wear and get older. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Dorcas Pouros 2024-11-26

Compared to my 2000 Maxima, the turning radius has been fixed. The view over the hood is spectacular and the side mirror view is sweet. The acceleration with the CVT is awesome and the transmission is always running in the sweet spot. There is no engine torque in the steering wheel. The seats fit my 6 foot 3 inch frame and they're heated/cooled for the driver. The iPod interface is perfect, allowing me to stream audio or plug into USB to view my music on the NAV display, which also plays DVDs in park mode. On hilly roads, the paddle shifters come in handy for engine braking. I have the Premium addition which strikes a good balance between sporty feel and everyday comfort. In my opinion, Nissan has hit a home run with this model.

  3. Armani Mohr 2024-11-05

Congratulations on your new 2011 Maxima Professional Trim! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the car's stylish design and smooth drivability. The features such as XM, NAVI, Moon roof, specific driver setting, and engine response are definitely a plus. The car's suspension provides a smooth ride, and the paddle shifters or manual shifting give you great pick up and power. It's good to know that the back seat can comfortably seat two people, even though you primarily use it for yourself. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Jett Rath 2024-10-09

I drove an Altima coupe 3.5 for two years before it was hit. I really enjoyed that car. I always thought that the drive between the Altima 3.5 and the Maxima 3.5 was similar, but I was so wrong. The Maxima feels much stronger, drives better, and the engine sound is wonderful. The tech features in the Maxima look and feel leaps and bounds beyond the fully loaded Altima. The Altima is a great car, but it's no Maxima. Neither is the Accord, Camry, Avalon, or 2.0 Sonata, which I test drove before driving the Maxima. What a car! The Maxima SV with Sports Package is definitely the way to go.

  5. Joan Reichert 2024-09-21

I have a 2011 Maxima with premium package and overall I absolutely love this car. Although there are some minor issues with interior noises from the radio/climate console, the rear window, and vibration and noise from the front passenger seat when unoccupied, I'm still very happy with my purchase. I've noticed that the noises seem to be worse when it's colder out, but I'm hoping to see a reduction of the noise soon once the weather warms up. While I do feel that the nav and voice recognition system could use some improvement, I still think that this car is a great value for the price and I'm very satisfied with my decision to upgrade from my 2009 Altima SL.
