2001 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2001 Nissan Maxima problems
The 2001 Nissan Maxima is known for its reliable engine and transmission, but there are some common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common issues is body rust, particularly in the support below the radiator. This is a critical component as it supports the engine, and if it has rusted out, it can lead to engine problems. It is recommended to check this area for rust by looking under the bumper. If rust is found, it is important to replace the support to prevent further damage to the engine.
Another issue that has been reported is problems with the electronics, specifically the computers that control the idle and electronic engine mounts. These computers can "fry" unexpectedly, causing issues with the idle controls or electronic engine mounts. A workaround for this issue is to bypass the coolant system on the idle air control valve (IACV) and unplug or replace the electronic engine mounts with non-electronic ones.
The 2001 Nissan Maxima can also experience problems with the suspension, particularly the struts and shocks. At 200,000 miles, it is recommended to replace the struts and shocks to ensure a smooth ride. Additionally, it is recommended to replace all the rubber bushings for the sway bar and check the inner and outer tie rod ends to ensure the suspension is in good working order.
Another common issue is problems with the tires, specifically low or high air pressure, slow leaks, or flat tires. It is important to regularly check the tire pressure to ensure they are at the recommended level to prevent any issues while driving.
The 2001 Nissan Maxima has also had some recalls, including seven recalls for safety issues. It is important to check for any recalls and have them addressed to ensure the safety of the vehicle.
In summary, while the 2001 Nissan Maxima is known for its reliable engine and transmission, there are some common problems that owners have reported, including body rust, electronics issues, suspension problems, tire pressure issues, and recalls. It is important to regularly maintain the vehicle and address any issues promptly to ensure its longevity and reliability.

I NOTIFIED MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER INDICATED THERE WAS A FAILURE OF THE SECURITY SYSTEM INVOLVING THE STEERING LOCK UNIT. HE ALSO ADVISED THE NISSAN CORP. WAS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM INVOLVING THE MAKE AND MODEL GIVEN. BECAUSE OF THIS COMMON OCCURRENCE HE SAID NISSAN ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE MALFUNCTIONING SYSTEM. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHERE THE STEERING LOCK FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED. I THEN CONTACTED NISSAN NORTH AMERICA INC WITH THE DIAGNOSES FOR THEM TO ADVISE THE NEXT STEP FOR THE REPAIRS. OF COURSE THEY SAID IT HAD TO BE DIAGNOSED/CONFIRMED BY A CERTIFIED NISSAN MECHANIC/DEALER. SINCE I USED MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO TOW MY VEHICLE, I HAD NO OTHER MEANS OF GETTING THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALER. THE CLERK I SPOKE WITH AT NISSAN NORTH AMERICA INFORMED ME TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A NISSAN DEALER AND IF THE PROBLEM WAS THE SAME AS STATED IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR THE TOW BILL AND REPAIRS. AFTER $1710.93 AND THREE LONG, LONG, LONG PHONE CALLS LATER, HERE I AM WRITING A COMPLAINT BECAUSE I WAS NOT FULLY REIMBURSED AS PROMISED. THE PREVIOUS TOTAL INCLUDES THE REPAIR COST, TOW BILL AND RENTAL CAR COST. HOWEVER I MUST SAY I WAS PARTIALLY REIMBURSED FOR SOME OF MY EXPENSES. 2001 Nissan Maxima recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2001 Nissan Maxima.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

Your car has 260,000 miles today! That's amazing! It's great to hear that you've been able to keep up with routine maintenance and only needed a second clutch. It's clear that you take great care of your car, as it still looks near new and runs like a dream. I can understand why you might consider selling it, but it's also understandable why you would reconsider. After all, you bought it new and it's an awesome car that you felt you didn't deserve. I'm glad to hear that Empire Lakewood Nissan was able to help make it affordable for you. It's also wonderful to hear that your mom was able to get a nice Maxima from them as well, and that she still loves her car. Thanks for sharing your story with me!

I recently purchased this car and have driven it for 74,000 miles. While there was one service bulletin for the tie rod, overall the car has been reliable. The paint could be better as it chips easily, and the front end can be a bit creaky. However, the car gets decent mileage on the highway and has plenty of power for any situation. The brakes work great, but the rotors do not hold up well, as I will be on my 3rd set of fronts at the next break job. The ride can be stiff and sometimes rude, but it is still fun to drive, even though I have an automatic. I replaced the front right speaker last year, which was an easy and affordable fix. I recently purchased a good set of Bridgestone all-weather tires, and the car has been a confident foul weather car. Overall, I have had a positive experience with this car and it has never let me down.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2001 SE that I bought about 18 months ago. I have to say, it's been an amazing car so far! The performance, comfort, and styling are all top-notch, and I feel like I got a great deal for my money. I've been getting an average of 23 mpg running regular unleaded, and I haven't had any performance problems at all. The only issue I had was with the CD player, which I had to get replaced, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. I did have to replace the stock tires at 27k, but that's to be expected. Overall, I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish ride!

I bought my Maxima back in 2004 with only 33k miles on it. It was a great and reliable car for many years. However, as time went on, I started experiencing some issues with the car such as check engine lights, 02 sensor problems, brake issues, MAF problems, muffler holes, and more. With 124k miles on it now, I think it's time for me to move on. While I love the look and power of the car, I find it difficult to keep up with the maintenance. I've read online that 2001 Maximas are prone to a lot of problems, so I wouldn't recommend buying one.
-
Drives great! I'm so glad to hear that you love the comfort and controls. It's also great to hear that you're getting a nice surprise with the gas mileage at 28-30 mpg. It sounds like you've had a good experience with your car so far, even though you purchased it used with 93K miles. It's especially great to hear that it's been reliable on long trips and has great brakes. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
