2012 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

  • Summary: Since 2018 to present day. I been having difficulties with the visibility from my front windshield at sunny days. The dashboard has this sticky substance that make the dashboard really shinny, and reflect the sun light on the windshield, blocking the view and make it hard to see the road and vehicles. I had to use sunglasses to block this issue, but in some cases this will not improved and can make it worst. I had couple of near miss, and I have to stop driving my car at times to avoid this issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-09
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP3CC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On June 9, 2022 @8:50am I was driving my Nissan Maxima to work and as I was at the stop light waiting to go through the intersection, the car shut off completely cutting off all power. I have push button and no electric was working. My jumper cables were in the trunk but I could not access them because the trunk would not operate without power. Without power my hazards did not even work so I could not let traffic flow know that I was in distress. My car almost was hit 3 separate times because of a faulty part or system built by Nissan needs to get their stuff together and quit putting people in danger. I’m scared to drive it now because it could shut off as I am in the act of driving and that could be catastrophic not only for me but for other innocent people. I will be contacting Nissan and they will be fixing this properly! The car was finally jump started and I was able to drive the rest of the way to work. Let’s see if it starts when I have to leave work? So not cool.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-16
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP1CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This CVT control variable transmission in these cars go out so fast. The CVT transmission went out at around 115,000. We replace it because we pressed the gas and no acceleration when stop light turned green. Then missed the light then it accelerated late and almost got hit by on coming car. We just replaced this CVT transmission in July 30, 2020 at around about price of $5000. The only place that it can be replaced is through the Nissan dealership. They only guarantee their work for 1 years time. It is starting to malfunction in just over 14 months time. This is only after a little over a year worth of driving. This is ridiculous the amount of money people pay for them on to get $5000 worth of quality equipment. This is a safety hazard driving through Dallas traffic and no shoulder to pull over on because of construction. I have seen on the internet so many complaints about these CVT transmissions. This is the second time transmission problems already replace CVT at 115, 000 miles. Now needs another replacement at 139, 000?

Negative 2012 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Michael Goodwin 2024-10-14

I recently leased a 2012 Maxima Sport after turning in my 2009 model. While I enjoyed my previous Maxima, I must say that the newer model is not quite up to par. The 2009 Maxima was a beautiful car that appealed to both young and old alike, with exceptional handling and a classy interior and exterior. Unfortunately, the newer model seems to have lost some of that charm. The interior is smaller and less accommodating for passengers, and the exterior features smaller lights and a sloping hood that detract from the car's once eye-catching design. While Nissan claims there have been handling improvements, I have not noticed any significant changes. It seems that the newer model is geared more towards a younger generation. Overall, I am a bit disappointed with the changes made to the Maxima, but I still enjoy driving it.

  2. Alford Spinka 2024-09-28

The Maxima is a beautiful and spacious car that is easy to drive in the city. However, some customers have reported issues with condensation in the side mirror lights, which Nissan claims is normal. Additionally, some drivers have experienced handling issues and wind noise on the highway. While syncing an iPod can be frustrating at times, the Maxima is still a great choice for those in the market for a new car. If you are considering a Maxima, it may also be worth checking out the Acura TSX/TL, Honda Accord, Lexus ES, Toyota Camry/Avalon.

  3. Hillard Feest 2024-02-16

I have 15,000 miles on my car now. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The car has not started over 12 times and the dash freezes, making the car unresponsive. The dealer advised me to keep a wrench in the car and disconnect the battery when this happens. They also mentioned that Nissan is working on a fix. I called Nissan customer service to follow up, but they have no record of the dealer calling. Additionally, the volume knob, nav, and radio have all had some issues, and the passenger seat is completely loose. The car is also quite loud on the highway with the windows up. I am disappointed that Nissan does not stand behind their products. I have requested to swap out the car for something else, but unfortunately, both the dealer and Corp will not talk to me until 12 months into the lease.

Positive 2012 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Mauricio O'Hara 2024-09-28

I've owned my 2012 Maxima for over four years now and it has clocked 60k miles. I thought a long-term review from someone like me would be helpful. I'm happy to report that I have had zero issues with the car! The build quality is excellent and it has survived 7 New Hampshire winters and 2 Arizona summers with ease. The paint, molding, undercarriage, and everything else is in tip-top shape. Although it was in an accident last year, there have been no long-term effects or shaky rides, and it still runs and rides like new. You might come across negative reviews about the CVT transmission, but I'm pretty sure the Maxima is just fine, as mine has been too. Just replace the fluid every 30k miles and you'll be good. It's a very fast and fun car to drive, with a comfortable interior, lots of options, and makes for a safe, reliable daily driver. I plan on going the distance with this car and will do another review in four years!

  2. Hollis Graham 2024-08-03

Hello! I hope you're having a great day. I just wanted to share that we recently picked up our 3rd Maxima, and we're really excited about it! The car only has 400+ miles on it, and we traded in our loaded 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD for it. My wife wasn't a fan of the Acura, but she absolutely loves her new Maxima. We've actually owned two other Maximas in the past - a '92 and an '03 - and we've always felt like we get a lot of car for the money. We're hoping that this new Maxima will be just as reliable as the first one. I'll be sure to keep you posted!

  3. Patrick Connelly 2024-07-08

We purchased our car on 6/3/14 with a rebuilt title and only 7,000 miles on it. It's a sleek Black Rose with Tan Interior. We paid $15,000.00 for it and were a bit hesitant to trust the car at first. However, after a year of driving it and putting 7,500 miles on it, we can confidently say that it has been an absolute joy to drive. We are averaging 26 mpg on regular gas, which is pretty good considering it has almost 300HP and is quick, agile, and comfortable. The radio system is outstanding, the leather seats are first class, and all the appointments are great. The only weak point is the Heater/Air Condition ETC. This car is incredibly fun to drive and handles like a sports car. We are so glad we bought it. As of our update on 7/6/2019, the car has 34,000 miles on it and is still running great, getting 22MPG. The paint on the rear deck is starting to peel, but it still runs and drives sweet.

  4. Johnson Cummings 2024-06-13

My 2012 Nissan Maxima has knocks at 30 mph. I took it to the dealership and, after some investigation, the fleet manager identified it as the ABS. Although it is frustrating to hear a knock every time, I have an appointment with a Nissan engineer to further investigate the issue. During a test drive of a brand new 2012 Maxima, we noticed the same knock at 30 mph. It would be helpful if Nissan could release a formal report on this issue. However, I am confident that this is just the way the car is built and it is not a major concern at this time.

  5. Demarco Graham 2024-06-05

This is by far the best car I have ever owned! The quality of the build is apparent as soon as you step into the vehicle. It's super quick and feels every bit as fast as my previous car, a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP with a 5.3 liter V8. In fact, it falls short only at high speeds. I've test driven Accords and Camrys with V6 engines, but this car feels like it's in another class of performance and luxury. So far, I am the second owner of my Maxima and have had zero problems. The only issue I would say the car has is that it's not great in snow despite being a FWD car. If you live in a place with snow, I would recommend getting some nice snow tires. I still have the Maxima on 3/20/16 and everything I said above is true!
