2005 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2005 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima 2005 has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems include engine issues, transmission problems, and sunroof defects.
Engine issues are prevalent in the 2004-2008 Nissan Maxima, with the timing chain being a significant concern. The timing chain tensioner and guides wear out, causing the chain to be loose. This can cause the timing to jump, leading to internal engine damage. Replacing the chain, guides, and tensioners is a big job that requires removing everything in front of the engine and taking the timing cover off. Ignition coils, cam sensors, and crankshaft position sensors are also problematic, causing rough engine running, stalling, and check engine lights.
Transmission problems are another common issue in the 2004-2008 Nissan Maxima. The transmission can jerk when shifting, slip and jerk, not work correctly, and even fail. These issues can cause hesitation between gears, rough shifting, sudden stops, and diminished acceleration. The transmission can also leak, causing shifting issues that may not be resolved by fixing the shifting issues alone.
Sunroof defects are also a concern in the 2004-2008 Nissan Maxima. The sunroof glass can explode without warning, leaving occupants at risk. Nissan has been accused of using a faulty tempering process for their sunroofs since 2008, leading to lawsuits.
These common problems in the Nissan Maxima 2005 have led to class-action lawsuits against Nissan for the timing chain defects and sunroof defects. Nissan has preliminarily settled some of these lawsuits, while others are still working their way through the court system.
In summary, the Nissan Maxima 2005 has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission problems, and sunroof defects. These issues can be costly to repair and may lead to significant engine damage or safety concerns. It is essential to be aware of these common problems when considering purchasing a Nissan Maxima 2005.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-18
- VIN: 14NBA41E25C
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THIS DANGER OF WHICH I COMPLAIN IS NOT ABSOLUTE TO MY VEHICLE BUT TO ALL OTHERS THAT ARE MADE WITH SUCH SHORTCUT. IN PREVIOUS DECADES CARS WERE MADE WITH A TRUNK KEY AND OR MECHANICAL CABLE FOR OPENING. MY 2005 MAXIMA AND MOST RECENT VEHICLES ARE MADE WITH ONLY AN ELECTRONIC BUTTON TO OPEN THE TRUNK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. RECENTLY MY CAR LOST POWER AT A PRECARIOUS LOCATION AND I HAD NO WAY OF ACCESSING THE TRUNK. MY FLARES, MY BOOSTER CABLES,ALL EMERGENCY TOOLS, SUPPLIES, FIRST AID KIT, FIRE EXTINGUISHER, WATER ALL LOCKED AWAY IN THE TRUNK AND I HAD NO ACCESS TO IT. THIS IS NOT MERELY INCONVENIENT, BUT VERY DANGEROUS. CAR MANUFACTURERS MAY SAY THAT THERE IS ACCESS THROUGH THE BACK SEAT. THIS, HOWEVER, IS TOTALLY INADEQUATE. IT IS VERY CUMBERSOME AND CALL FOR PHYSICAL MANEUVER WHICH IS VERY DIFFICULT, TIME CONSUMING AND SUBJECT TO FAILURE. FIRST IT IS A TASK IN ITSELF TO FIGURE OUT AND TO GET THAT BACK SEAT DOWN. EVEN WHEN DOWN, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE TO EVEN CRAWL INSIDE AND ACCESS THINGS YOU NEED. FEELING AROUND IN THE DARK WITH YOUR HAND IS NOT EFFICIENT. FURTHERMORE THE APPARATUS TO GET THE TRUNK DOOR OPEN FROM THAT POSITION IS NOT ONLY OBSCURED BUT PHYSICALLY ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ENGAGE FROM THAT POSITION. I PROPOSE THAT IT BE MANDATED THAT VEHICLES COME WITH A MORE ACCESSIBLE BACKUP, SUCH AS A MECHANICAL CABLE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR OR KEY LOCK FROM THE OUTSIDE TO OPEN THE TRUNK IN CASE OF POWER FAILURE. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE! ONE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ABLE TO ACCESS NECESSARY AND EMERGENCY ITEMS FROM THE TRUNK IN CASE OF POWER FAILURE EMERGENCY! THIS MAY SEEM LIKE A TRIVIAL MATTER TO YOU ONLY BECAUSE I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THE URGENCY OF THE SITUATION AND THE POSSIBLE DEVASTATING EFFECT OF THIS IF IT CONTINUES UNCORRECTED. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS A VIABLE COMPLAINT AND I URGE YOU TO APPROACH THIS MATTER WITH EXPEDITION AND EARNEST. THANK YOU!

I'VE SEEN 1,000S OF FORUMS WITH PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND CLAIMING NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I noticed that there are some negative reviews regarding transmission issues. I am experiencing the same problem with my Maxima unfortunately, as it started slipping around 60k. It would be great if Nissan could take responsibility for their faulty transmission. I hope Nissan can address this issue and regain my trust. Best of luck to Nissan in resolving this matter.

I bought my 2005 Nissan Maxima when it had only 13 miles on it. It has a really sporty look, but one thing I don't like is that you have to be careful not to bump your head when getting in since it sits low. I've noticed that the chrome tarnishes easily when washing the car. Also, I've been experiencing a groan or moan sound when making left turns with the steering wheel, but unfortunately, the mechanics can't seem to hear it. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my Nissan. Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others, I wouldn't mind owning another Nissan in the future. It's worth noting that I had a similar issue with my Nissan Exteria, but overall, I still enjoyed driving it.

I have an 04 Onxy Drivers preferred package SE and I absolutely love everything about it! I looked at other cars such as Audi, Lexus, and Acura, but this one wins hands down. For the money, it's definitely one of the best cars on the road. I can see myself driving this car for many, many years to come. Although some of the plastic parts in the interior could have been better, the performance and styling more than make up for it. Overall, I would give it an A+ grade.

I've been driving my Maxima for a while now and unfortunately, I'm experiencing some issues with the transmission. It seems to be a common problem with this car and the cost of replacing it is quite high. My team and I are currently exploring more affordable options than the $4,000 price quoted by the transmission company. Prior to this issue, I had no problems with my car. It's disappointing that many others are facing the same problem, which suggests a manufacturing issue with this vehicle. I was even considering purchasing another Maxima, but now I'm having second thoughts. It's not a good investment!

Your car is amazing! It's been six years since you got it, and it still gets plenty of compliments. The ride quality, performance, and basic usability are all awesome. You're getting about 24.7 MPG on premium fuel in mixed driving, which is great. In the city, you're getting about 19-23 MPG, and on the highway, you're getting 30-33 MPG. As for the transmission, you've learned that it's important to check the transmission oil often, and you've been doing that since the rebuilt. It's been over a year, and it's still shifting smoothly. You're doing the oil change yourself, and you're ONLY using Nissan's K-Matic Oil. Doing it yourself is much cheaper than having the dealer do it for you.

Although this car may seem like a great deal due to its price, it is important to consider the potential maintenance costs. Unfortunately, the parts for this car are three times more expensive than those for other cars in its category. The annual maintenance cost can be as high as $1200 up to 60000 miles, and even higher afterwards. In comparison, my Honda Odyssey, which I purchased at the same time as the Maxima, has had no major maintenance needs. Overall, I would not recommend the Nissan due to its high maintenance costs.
Chandler Sporer 2024-09-12
my 3rd Maxima I have owned and by far the absolute worst!! I have spent well over $8,000 on mechanical repairs (not maintenance) and it still has under 80k miles on it.Transmission valve body, both catalytic converters, both primary and secondary timing chains tensioners and guides, multiple sensors, 4 sets of headlights (considered maintenance if it were only 2, but 4 sets!!) I wish I still had my 96 which my neighbor still drives w/ 250k+ miles with minor repairs and maintenance.

I recently spoke to Nissan regarding my transmission issues, but unfortunately, they were unable to assist me. Despite having my transmission replaced once before, I have been experiencing ongoing problems and have not received the support I was hoping for. Additionally, the lumbar system, which was previously recalled, has broken again, and the fog lights have required multiple replacements. I have found the customer service at Nissan's HQ to be lacking, which has left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. At this point, I am hesitant to consider purchasing another Nissan vehicle, as I do not feel that my needs as a customer have been adequately addressed.
Lonzo Schmeler 2024-07-03
Although I experienced some issues after 50k miles, I have taken care of them and my car is now running smoothly. I have had the transmission replaced twice due to a common jerking problem between 1st and 2nd gear, but this issue has been resolved. Additionally, I have addressed the AC and window defroster issues, as well as the CD changer skipping and telescopic steering wheel wobbling. I have also taken care of the ABS pump issue that was causing the ABS to come on every time I pressed the brakes. While I did need new motor mounts, this is a common issue that can occur when replacing a transmission. Although there were no recalls, I was able to address these issues through service bulletins. My car is now in great condition and I am confident in its reliability.
Desmond Walker 2024-06-19
I have been driving this car for the past 5 years and unfortunately, it has been quite expensive to maintain. I have experienced the same issues repeatedly, such as the transmission giving up, the AC not working, and the timing belt needing replacement. As a teacher, I have to be mindful of my expenses and it can be challenging to afford these repairs. I drive 40 miles every day and it can be stressful worrying about the car breaking down. Although I have already replaced the transmission, there is still another noise that concerns me. I would appreciate a refund for this car as it has not met my expectations in terms of quality. I believe this is a common issue that many people are facing during these difficult times.
