2000 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-27
  • VIN: JN1CA31D0YT
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: TIRES. GOODYEAR VIVA 3 MODEL, SIZE 215/55R16 (AND MOST OTHER SIZES). THESE TIRES GO OUT OF ROUND AT EXCEPTIONALLY LOW MILEAGE. AN COMMON COMPLAINT AT WALMART (THE ONLY RETAILER THAT SELLS THIS MODEL) IS THAT THE TIRES GO OUT OF ROUND, PRODUCE UNBELIEVABLE NOISE, AND VIBRATION IN THE STEERING COLUMN. I HAVE EXPERIENCE BOTH THESE EFFECTS AS WELL, AND THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED ON A NEWLY (DAYS BEFORE) ALIGNED VEHICLE, AND HAVE LESS THAN 5,000 MILES ON THEM. SEE HTTPS://WWW.WALMART.COM/IP/GOODYEAR-VIVA-3-ALL-SEASON-215-55R16-93H-TIRE/42353801 FOR A LITANY OF THE ESSENTIALLY SAME COMPLAINT FROM HUNDREDS OF DRIVERS ON THE SAME MODEL OF TIRE. THESE TIRES SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD, THEY ARE NOT SAFE. TIRES THAT GO OUT OF ROUND, AT LESS THAN 5,000 MILES, SOMETHING IS GOING ON THERE. (IN MY CASE, I HAVE ONLY TWO OF THE TIRES (ONE AXLE) BUT ONE IS OK (SO FAR), AND THE OTHER IS CLEARLY NOT. BUT WHEN I WENT AND READ THE REVIEWS, I FOUND OVER HALF THE COMPLAINTS WERE ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM (OUT OF ROUND, AND MASSIVE VIBRATION AND NOISE). THE OTHER HALF OF THE COMPLAINTS ON LOW MILEAGE LIFESPANS. BUT THE TIRES GOING OUT OF ROUND, AND CAUSING VIBRATION IN HUGE NUMBERS OF VEHICLES, THAT IS SOMETHING NHTSA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE. HENCE MY COMPLAINT. I WILL SOON BE REPLACING THESE TIRES ON MY VEHICLE, I DON'T THINK THEY ARE SAFE TO DRIVE ON.

  • VIN: JN1CA31A0YT
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA SE. WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON A HIGHWAY OR SECONDARY ROAD THE VEHICLE STARTS TO BUCK. SUDDENLY WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE (TCS) TRACTION CONTROL AND SLIP LIGHTS ILLUMINATE. THIS CAUSES ME TO SUDDENLY LOSE POWER AND DECELERATE IN HI SPEED TRAFFIC ALMOST LEADING TO REAR END COLLISIONS. I HAVE TRIED TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM BY RESETTING THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY OVERNIGHT AND SPEAKING TO MECHANICS. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. AT TIMES THE TCS WILL ACTIVATE ( SOMETIMES STALL ) WHILE I AM PULLING INTO TRAFFIC OR MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY ( RPM'S GO TO 2000 MAXIMUM WHEN THIS HAPPENS ) CAUSING CONCERN TO MYSELF OR OTHER MOTORIST. THE VEHICLE HAS 190K AND I HAVE OWNED IT SINCE 01/26/2018. THE VEHICLE OPERATED PERFECTLY UNTIL 07/2018. UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE BEEN UNEMPLOYED SINCE 04/2018 AND CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE THE CAR PUT IN A SHOP FOR REPAIRS. I AM CAPABLE OF DOING MY OWN MECHANICAL REPAIR ONCE I CAN DIAGNOSE THE ROOT CAUSE. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SINCE I DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER AT MY DISPOSAL. MY MAIN CONCERN BEING SAFETY TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. ANY HELP WITH THIS SITUATION WILL BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

Negative 2000 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Vaughn Bahringer 2024-11-17

Hi there! I noticed that your car has been giving you some trouble lately. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out? It sounds like there may be some issues with the coils and suspension. Additionally, have you looked into more affordable tire options? I understand that the gas mileage hasn't been great, but have you tried any fuel-saving techniques? As for your question about the transmission, it may be best to have a professional take a look at it. Do you have any other concerns or questions? I'm happy to help!

  2. Landen Spencer 2024-09-10

I have experienced a constant stream of problems with my Nissan car since purchasing it 2 years ago. Over the course of 4 years of ownership, I have invested a significant amount of money, totaling $3-4000, not including the $3000 spent on tires and brakes. Despite these expenses, I still have close to $2000 worth of repairs outstanding. The list of repairs includes the transmission, daytime running lights module, heater control electronics, air temp sensor, and exhaust temp sensor. However, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Nissan in the future.

  3. Adrien Macejkovic 2024-06-29

I'm glad to hear that the Maxima is your first Nissan and that you were impressed by its performance and list of standard features. I understand that you have had some issues with the car, such as replacing two oxygen sensors, the coils which were disengaging the no slip drive, and the brakes chattering when slowing down from higher speeds and needing the rotors turned. Additionally, the turning circle is poor for a medium-sized car and the back seat has insufficient headroom for larger people. On the positive side, the car handling is good, the finish was excellent, and the gas mileage for longer trips is exceptional. If you're looking for a car with extra headroom, I would definitely recommend checking out the Murano. Thank you for sharing your experience with the Maxima!

  4. Braden Mann 2024-06-09

This is my first time owning a Nissan. The size of the car is perfect for city driving and parking. However, I have experienced some issues with the handling and it has been in the shop too many times. The O2 sensors have been replaced twice already and the ECM module has also been replaced twice. Additionally, the ride is too stiff and the car severely jolts even at small potholes. Hitting larger ones feels like the car will shake loose. There is also too much road and air noise. Unfortunately, the fuel economy does not meet my expectations. I test drove a 2004 model and found the same stiff ride. Overall, I am very disappointed and probably won't buy another one.

  5. Randi Huel 2024-05-06

Despite the initial excitement of purchasing my dream car with only 47,000 miles, I encountered a series of issues that required significant repairs. However, I confidently tackled each issue head-on, replacing the MAS, front ball joints and axles, air conditioner clutch pulley, water pump, and brakes. Although I still face some challenges such as water leakage and sputtering upon cold start, I remain confident in my ability to address them. Despite the unexpected expenses of over $2,500 in repairs within two years and under 90,000 miles, I remain committed to my dream car.

Positive 2000 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Demond Hammes 2025-01-05

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Nissan Maxima, which I've had for about 4 years now. Overall, it's been a great car for me. When I bought it in 2003, it had 24,000 miles on it, and now it has 112,500 miles. Of course, with any car, there's normal wear and tear, and I've had to do some maintenance like oil changes and buying expensive tires. However, I did have to replace the front and rear rotors, as well as both rear calipers, due to brake fluid leaks. I also had to replace one ignition coil at around 105,000 miles, which cost me $600. Apparently, the coils for the years 2000 to 2001 were not great, so if you have one of those years and haven't replaced them yet, consider yourself lucky! I also had to have the CPU reprogrammed when the engine light came on due to the increase in ethanol from 5% to 10%. Despite these issues, I still think it's a fantastic car with lots of power, and I would definitely consider buying another Nissan in the future!

This is an excellent vehicle! I bought it new in March 2000 and have not been disappointed. It's the first car I've owned for 10+ years and it still drives as good as the day I bought it. In all categories, the Maxima has surpassed my expectations - power, acceleration, reliability, comfort, and looks are all an A+. I can't think of a better car to turn over to my son next year when he starts driving. My only gripe is that it goes through brake pads pretty frequently.

You've had this Maxima for almost ten years and have replaced the MAF, an O2 sensor, front axle, and three out of six ignition coils. The coils are easy to replace on your own, especially coils 2, 4, and 6. Anything that's ever broken on it didn't leave you stranded on the road! Overall, this is the most reliable car you've ever owned. It's still quiet as a mouse and rides great. It still gets terrific gas mileage and you run it on 89 octane.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had this SE since new in 2000 and it's still running smoothly with just regular oil changes. With under 40,000 miles, you haven't even made it to the first tune-up yet! The only issue you've encountered is brake rotor warpage at 30,000 miles, but that was easily fixed by having the rotors turned for just $10 each. If you're planning on driving in the winter, I would recommend replacing the original Bridgestone tires with better all-season tires like the Michelins. Trust me, you'll want the best rubber to take advantage of the power. This car is so much fun to drive and easily out-accelerates Accords and Camrys!

This sporty sedan offers plenty of smooth power. I would highly recommend opting for the leather seats and Bose stereo.
