2010 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2010 Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima is a popular sedan known for its powerful engine and robust performance. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues, particularly in certain model years. Here are some common problems with the Nissan Maxima, specifically the 2010 model, based on complaints from owners:

  • Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) Failure: Some 2009-2010 Nissan Maxima models may experience Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) failures, preventing the car from starting. This issue can be frustrating and potentially dangerous, as the car won't start even if the battery is in good condition.
  • Engine Problems: Some 2010 Nissan Maxima owners have reported issues with the engine, such as the engine not turning over or starting. This problem can be caused by various factors, including faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or camshaft position sensors.
  • Excessive Steering Issues: Some 2010 Nissan Maxima owners have reported excessive steering issues, such as difficulty turning the steering wheel or a loose steering wheel. This problem can be caused by worn-out steering components, such as tie rods or ball joints.
  • Faulty Suspension Parts: Some 2010 Nissan Maxima owners have reported issues with the suspension, such as a rough ride or excessive bouncing. This problem can be caused by worn-out suspension components, such as shocks or struts.
  • Transmission Problems: Some 2010 Nissan Maxima owners have reported transmission problems, such as slipping or jerking during acceleration. This problem can be caused by various factors, including low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission control module.
  • Dashboard Lights and Power Loss: Some 2010 Nissan Maxima owners have reported issues with the dashboard lights and power loss while driving. This problem can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors or electrical issues.
  • Airbag Issues: The Nissan Maxima, like many other vehicles, has been affected by the Takata airbag recall. The faulty Takata airbags can explode and shoot metal fragments after deployment, leading to injuries or deaths.

It's important to note that not all 2010 Nissan Maxima models will experience these issues, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by owners, and potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase.

Do 2010 Nissan Maximas have transmission problems?

The 2010 Nissan Maxima CVT suffers a number of issues that relate directly to its transmission systems and design. Some users report heavy shaking or a grinding sound from the gears when driving, among other problems.

What is the common problem with Nissan Maxima?

A prevalent concern among Nissan Maxima owners is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning (AC) hose, often causing the AC to blow warm air. This issue is notably frequent in 2001 and 2004-2012 models, typically surfacing around 87,000 miles.

What year Maxima has transmission problems?

2004-2006

Some of those that have been known to experience transmission issues include the 2004-2009 Nissan Murano, the 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima, and the 2005-2007 Nissan Pathfinder.

How long do Maxima engines last?

A Nissan Maxima can last about 200,000 miles on average, but this of course depends on how well it is maintained. A poorly maintained Maxima has a significantly higher chance to develop major engine and transmission problems before hitting 100,000 – 150,000 miles.

Makes it difficult to see traffic lights or pedestrians which could cause dangerous harm to pedestrians, other drivers, or myself and passengers. Went to local Nissan dealer and was told the only fix would be to replace dashboard at my expense even though it is a common problem because there are no recalls on this issue. Negative 2010 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Preston Nitzsche 2024-08-27

Nissan makes some great cars, and I'm happy to say that my 10' Maxima has been a joy to drive for the past month. There are definitely some things to consider, though. On the positive side, it's fast, comfortable, stylish, and safe. However, there are a few downsides to keep in mind, such as the need for premium gas and oil, the interior design, and the radio quality. Additionally, the fuel economy is only average at 21-23 mpg with 30 highway miles daily, and the performance isn't as impressive as I had hoped. The door opening mechanism could also be improved, as it only has one stage. The interior is quite dark, and the headlights could be better. Finally, the price tag of 31k for the S type is a bit steep, and the back seats are a bit cramped. All things considered, it's worth taking some time to think before making a purchase. Personally, I regret not keeping my 2009 Nissan Altima.

  2. Dante Barrows 2024-07-15

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Nissan Maxima. Recently, I had an issue with the driver seat back where the pins had broken and the back was laying on the rear seat. I took it to Gray Daniels Nissan in Brandon MS for a warranty claim, hoping to get it fixed. Unfortunately, the service manager denied my claim in Aug. 2012 and again in January 2013, and even Nissan Customer Care couldn't help. They claimed that there was physical damage, which was not covered under warranty. Although there were no tears, scuffs, marks, or scratches of any kind on the seat or seat back, I was still denied warranty. It was quite surprising, considering that the broken pins were the very reason I came to Nissan for help. Thanks for listening to my story!

  3. Jessy Marvin 2024-03-29

Although I initially received the Maxima as a trade-in and found it to be a decent car, I soon began to experience some issues. The fog lights would sweat when I washed the car, the driver's seat would tilt back when taking off, the rear bumper didn't fit properly, and there was a noise coming from the front of the car. Despite contacting Nissan to inquire about a recall, I was informed that my vehicle was not part of one. However, upon taking the car to the dealership, I was informed that the noise I was hearing was indeed part of a recall. This experience has highlighted the importance of thorough investigation and seeking expert advice when necessary.

  4. Mervin Murray 2024-03-26

If you are experiencing issues with your car's accelerator, it is important to take it to the dealer as soon as possible. This problem can be serious and should not be ignored. Rest assured that the experts at the dealership will be able to diagnose and fix the issue with confidence.

Just traded-in my Infiniti G35 for the 2010 Maxima. One word: wow! I am 6'3

  2. Edgardo Rodriguez 2024-11-28

The car handles like a dream! The pickup and go is so smooth and fast. It's such a classy sedan.

  3. Everardo Walsh 2024-11-03

I recently traded my '09 370Z for the '10 Max SV. While the Z was a great sports car, I must say that the Max is an excellent 4-door 'sporty' car. It has gobs of power that are instantly ready on command, and it holds tight in continuous radius corners (once one gets used to front-wheel drive). Additionally, it is very comfortable and quiet on long commutes. The 3.5 L engine NVH is superior to the 3.7 L, and it is smooth all the way to the red line. Personally, I enjoy the CVT and the sport-shift function when I want to set my hair on fire. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend taking advantage of the discounts Nissan is offering (see Edmund's TMV). The decision to purchase this car is a no-brainer. While you could pay more for a TL, TSX, A4, 329, or C-class, I must warn you that you may find yourself being dusted by the Max drivers and their grins of satisfaction.

  4. Bruce Yundt 2024-10-22

Congratulations on your new 2010 Maxima! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. Your love for the 2009 models and the Maxima's 290 HP is evident in your words. It's wonderful that you're having so much fun driving it and that you find it to be a smooth and comfortable ride. The different package choices are a great feature, and the 19

  5. Gustave Turner 2024-10-18

We are thrilled with our 2010 Ocean Grey SV, which came fully loaded with all the options. After considering many other cars, we kept coming back to the Maxima. Although it's not a sports car, it's certainly fast enough for a family sedan. Driving this car is an absolute blast! The navigation system works great and we love having XM radio. The stunning grey color with a blue undertone really makes this car stand out. We had a wonderful experience with our dealer, McCarthy Nissan, who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. We are excited for many great years with this car!
