1992 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-12-27
  • VIN: JN1HJ01P2NT
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I HAVE READ WHERE MANY NISSAN MAXIMA OWNERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH LEAKS IN THE FUEL FILLER TUBE DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION (BETWEEN '88 AND'94). I HAVE ALSO SEEN THAT NISSAN IS VERY SELECTIVE IN DECIDING WHICH CARS ARE COVERED BASED ON THE VIN. I ALSO SEE THAT MANY HAVE ASKED FOR HELP FROM A MR. LARRY LONG AT THE NHTSA AND THAT'S HE'S BEEN VERY HELPFUL. I AM FACING A SIMILAR SITUATION NOW. I KNOW THERE IS A LEAK IN MY FILLER TUBE, AND NISSAN SAYS MY 1992 NISSAN MAXIMA GXE DOES NOT HAVE ANY OUTSTANDING RECALLS. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED, AND THEY DID NOT TELL ME IF IT HAD BEEN FIXED OR NOT. IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET THIS MESSAGE TO MR. LARRY LONG OR WHOMEVER IS WORKING ON SITUATIONS LIKE THIS? A LEAK IN THE FUEL FILLER TUBE IS POTENTIALLY VERY SERIOUS -- AND EXPENSIVE TO FIX. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP AND CONSIDERATION. *JB

FINALLY, THE ENGINE BLEW AND I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO HIM. HE HAD IT FOR ONE MONTH AND SAID HE CAN'T FIX IT. HE SAID HE WOULD SELL ME ANOTHER ONE AND TAKE $1000 OFF THE OTHER ONE IF I COME UP WITH $700 TO PUT DOWN ON ANOTHER. I DID, HE SAID THIS CAR HAD A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR'S RPM'S KEEP ON GOING UP TO ABOUT 5000-6000 UNTIL IT FINALLY KICKS INTO GEAR. NOW HE SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS ONE TOO. WHAT CAN I DO? *NM

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-05-15
  • VIN: JN1HJ01P0NT
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO, I HAD TO FIX A PROBLEM WITH A LEAK IN MY "FILLER PIPE" (GAS). I HAD DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM WHILE FILLING MY GAS TANK AT A LOCAL STATION. I HAD PREVIOUSLY READ NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 95V244000 AND THEREFORE BROUGHT MY CAR IN TO NISSAN DEALER WITH THE PRINT OUT OF THE RECALL TO GET THE SITUATION FIXED. THE DEALERSHIP HAD MY CAR 2 DAYS AND STILL HAD NOT STARTED ANY WORK ON IT... APPARENTLY THEY CONTACTED NISSAN WHO CLAIMED THEIR WAS NO RECALL ON MY CAR. I CONTACTED NISSAN MYSELF BOTH VIA EMAIL AND PHONE AND GOT THE SAME ANSWER FROM THEM... THAT NO RECALL EXISTED. SO I BROUGHT MY CAR TO MY REGULAR REPAIR SHOP AND HAD THE ISSUE FIXED. I SEE THE RECALL IS STILL POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE. DO YOU THINK I SHOULD TRY AND CONTEST THIS REPAIR WITH NISSAN... OR COULD I EVEN CONTINUE TO INSIST THERE IS A RECALL IN EXISTENCE ON MY 1992 NISSAN MAXIMA? I ALSO WANTED TO POINT OUT ANOTHER PROBLEM THE DEALERSHIP & NISSAN HAD WITH MY CAR... THEY TELL ME THAT MY VIN IS INVALID WHICH YOUR SITE DID TO, WHEN I TRIED TO SUBMIT IT. YOU SITE CLAIMS THAT "DIGIT" #9 WAS INVALID. EVEN THE DEALERSHIP READ MY VIN THE SAME WAY I DO : [XXX], ALTHOUGH, I HAD TO SUBMIT A ZERO FOR AN "O" TO GET THE VIN TO GO THROUGH ON THIS WEBSITE. DIGIT #9 DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE AN "O" ON MY VIN. THANK YOU, -[XXX]. *NM INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Negative 1992 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Mikel Paucek 2024-06-25

I purchased the car with approximately 107k miles and unfortunately experienced some issues with the transmission after the first year. Despite spending 2K on repairs, the problem persisted and I had to take it back to the transmission shop four times. Although the transmission had an eight-month good run, it eventually failed again, and unfortunately, it was out of warranty. In addition to the transmission issues, I also had to replace all the fuel injectors, but thankfully, I learned how to replace them myself, resulting in a significant improvement in the car's performance. However, my positive experience was short-lived as the transmission failed again. Despite spending around $4K in 50K miles, I remain confident that you will have a better experience with this car.

Positive 1992 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Jan Moore 2024-11-27

You've got to hand it to Nissan for creating a car that can outperform most other 4-door sedans, carry four adults and their golf clubs in the back, and all for the affordable price of $18,900. Despite some cosmetic wear and tear, the car has held up remarkably well over the past decade, with only a VTC repair at 98k miles and a transmission bearing at 160k miles. It's a testament to Nissan's engineering prowess that the car is still running smoothly after all these years.

  2. Arlo Morissette 2024-10-22

What a wonderful car! It has been in my family for 11 years and has been a great companion. My mom has driven it for about 100 miles a day for the past 3 years and it has held up really well. We have only had to replace the brakes and engine, but other than that, it has been smooth sailing. It's such a cute little car that we are even considering getting the 2004 model for my mom's new car. As a 16-year-old, I am thrilled that it will be my first car. It has already clocked 272,000 miles and is still going strong. We are hoping it will last a few more years, or at least until it reaches 300,000 miles!

  3. Abdiel O'Keefe 2024-10-13

This car has been incredibly reliable since day one, with the only expenses being for normal wear and tear. The manual transmission has made driving this car an absolute blast. I'm thrilled with the Maxima and am even considering selling it for a new one!

  4. Cullen Hackett 2024-09-26

I love my Maxima! She's a powerful, reliable, and comfortable car. She's my first car and I'm very happy to own her. The only thing I had to change were the transmission supports and brakes.

  5. Jessie McCullough 2024-09-22

I've owned this car for 9 years and I'm finally selling it. Overall, it has been a good used car with a strong and reliable engine. However, I have had some issues with the brakes. They tend to wear out every 30k miles and the only option is to use Nissan factory brakes that cost $700.00. Aftermarket brakes from other companies don't last as long. I've also experienced some sporadic electrical problems, which can be difficult to detect, but I simply replace the fuse. Despite these issues, I still think it's been a good car with 145k miles on it.
