1996 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 1996 Nissan Maxima problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1996 Nissan Maxima, several common problems have been reported:
- Differential Bearing Problem for Manual Transmission: Owners of 1995 and 1996 Nissan Maximas with manual transmissions have experienced issues with the differential bearing. This problem has been a concern for some owners, leading to recommendations for 1997 models and newer to avoid this issue.
- Transmission Jerking and Failure: Transmission problems, including jerking when shifting, rough gear transitions, vehicle stalling, and slow acceleration, have been widely reported. These issues can escalate to total transmission failure, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima models are particularly prone to these transmission malfunctions.
- AC Hose Leaks and Low Pressure: Another common problem is related to the air conditioning system, specifically leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses. This issue can cause the AC to blow warm air, indicating refrigerant leakage from the crimped AC hose. Owners of 2001 and 2004-2012 models have reported this problem, usually occurring around 87,000 miles.
- Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failures have been reported, leading to issues like the check engine light coming on. Failed ignition coils can cause misfires and affect the vehicle's performance. This problem is one of the common issues faced by Nissan Maxima owners.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the 1996 Nissan Maxima have encountered. Addressing these concerns promptly and with proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-08-08
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JN1CA21D2TT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR FIRE. MY SON'S CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE HE WAS DRIVING IT DUE TO A PART NISSAN KNEW WAS DEFECTIVE. THERE IS A RECALL FOR 1997-1999 NISSAN MAXIMAS DUE TO A DEFECT IN THEIR ALTERNATORS THAT CAUSED THEM TO CATCH FIRE. DETAILS ABOUT THE RECALL ARE BELOW. MY SON WAS DRIVING HIS 1996 MAXIMA WHEN THE ALTERNATOR CAUGHT FIRE. LUCKILY, HE ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY. ALTHOUGH HIS CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, CLEARLY THE PART THAT STARTED THE FIRE IS THE SAME AND IT IS THE PART THAT IGNITED THE FIRE. I SPOKE WITH NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS THREE TIMES OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I AM CONTACTING YOU BECAUSE I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET NISSAN TO DISCUSS THIS EVENT IN TERMS OF THE SECURITY ASPECT OF IT. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY CHOSE TO LOOK AT IT STRICTLY AS A WARRANTY ISSUE. IT STANDS TO REASON, IF THIS PART WAS IN MY SON'S CAR, IT IS ALSO IN OTHER 1996 MAXIMAS. THE NEXT PERSON WHO EXPERIENCES A CAR FIRE DUE TO A FAULTY ALTERNATOR MAY NOT BE AS LUCKY AS MY SON. NOTE: I BOUGHT BACK THE ALTERNATOR FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND I HAVE IT AT HOME. WWW.AUTOMOBILEMAG.COM/AM/1997/NISSAN/MAXIMA/RECALLS.HTML RECALL ID # 02V171000 - ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR RECALL DATE: JUN 24, 2002 MODEL AFFECTED: 1997 NISSAN MAXIMA SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, ONE OF THE DIODES USED IN THE ALTERNATOR MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED WHEN BUILT. THIS CAN EVENTUALLY RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE DIODE AND AN ELECTRICAL SHORT WHICH COULD MELT THE PLASTIC HOUSING. CONSEQUENCE: IF THE COMBUSTIBLE GAS EMITTED BY THE MELTING PLASTIC DOES NOT DISPERSE DUE TO AIR FLOW THROUGH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, IT COULD IGNITE AND IN TURN IGNITE THE FAN GUIDE IN THE ALTERNATOR. THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $560 UPDATED 10/17/11 *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-09-18
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JN1CA21D5TT
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: MY 1996 NISSAN MAXIMA CAUGHT ON FIRE BY ITSELF IN THE MIDNIGHT, AND IT WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY THE FIRE. I RECEIVED THE VEHICLE FROM MY FRIEND AS A GIFT, WHICH WAS IN A VERY GOOD CONDITION. AND I ALSO PAID THE BUCKNER'S AUTO SERVICE CENTER AT KNOXVILLE, TN FOR CHECKING THE CAR IN DETAIL AND GETTING IT REPAIRED. BUT 8 DAYS AFTER, THE CAR WAS ON FIRE. DURING THE 8 DAYS, THE CAR WAS PARKED IN THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF MY APARTMENT, AND NOBODY EVER TOUCHED THE CAR. IT'S CLOUDY OR RAINY IN ALL THESE DAYS. THOUGH FORTUNATELY MY WIFE AND I WERE SAFE, WE WERE REALLY SCARED AND MY WIFE WAS AFRAID OF VEHICLES FROM THEN ON. WE HAVE ARRIVED AT THE U.S LESS THAN 2 MONTHS, AND THIS INCIDENT ALMOST COMPLETELY DISRUPTED OUR LIVES. THE FOLLOWING IS THE DESCRIPTION FROM THE KNOXVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT CRIME REPORT: THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR EIGHT DAYS. INTERVIEWED CAR OWNER, WHO STATES HE HAS BEEN IN THE US FOR ABOUT ONE MONTH, AND HAD RECEIVED THE VEHICLE AS A GIFT FROM A FRIEND. HE SAID THAT HE HAD TAKEN THE CAR FOR REPAIRS AND TO BE SERVICED AT BUCHNERS AUTO REPAIR ON 9/8/2009 AND HAD AN INVOICE OF THE WORK PERFORMED. HE SAID THAT THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THEN BECAUSE HE WAS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF OBTAINING HIS DRIVER LICENSE. THERE WAS ONLY AN 8 MILE DIFFERENCE THE INVOICE MILEAGE AND THE CARS ODOMETER READING. INVESTIGATION OF THE VEHICLE REVEALED AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. THE CAR WAS LOCKED AND HOOD WAS SECURE WHEN ENG 12 ARRIVED. THEN HAD TO FORCE THE HOOD SINCE THE CABLE DID NOT FUNCTION DUE TO FIRE DAMAGE. AREAS OF HIGH HEAT WERE INDICATED ON THE HOOD OVER THE BATTERY AND FUEL/AIR INTAKE LOCATIONS. ALSO OF NOTE WAS THAT THE COOLING FANS WERE DESTROYED AND ONE HAD FALLEN TO THE GROUND. THIS FIRE IS CONSIDERED TO ACCIDENTAL AND THE CAUSE TO BE A MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. THE OWNER DOES NOT HAVE INSURANCE ON THE VEHICLE. SUGGESTED THAT THE OWNER TAKE PHOTOS AND CONTACT BUCHNERS TO CHECK FOR ANY RECALLS OR TO'S FOR THIS VEHICLE. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-03-24
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I FACED A RARE (I DON'T KNOW I AM THINKING IT AS RARE) PROBLEM WITH NISSAN MAXIMA. WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE MODE MY FRIEND, SITTING IN THE OTHER SEAT, ACCIDENTALLY CHANGED THE GEAR TO REVERSE MODE THEN THE STRANGE THING HAPPENED, THE CAR STEERING GOT LOCKED AND THE CAR GOT DECELERATED VERY FAST (AS I WAS APPLYING A BRAKE) AND EVEN THOUGH I CHANGED THE GEAR INTO DRIVE MODE THE CAR WONT PICK ACCELERATION AND BEHAVED AS IT IS IN THE NEUTRAL GEAR. SO, THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE ON THE LEFT LANE AND WE ALMOST GOT KILLED BY THE ON COMING TRAFFIC. SINCE THE STEERING WHEEL IS NOT MOVING WE ARE NOT ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER. WHAT WE DID IS WE STOPPED (TURN OFF) THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE AND CHANGED THE GEAR INTO PARKING AND STARTED IT AGAIN, AFTER "FEW SECONDS" THE CAR FINALLY MOVED. I AM SO SCARED BY THE EVENT AND I WANTED TO REPORT TO SOME ONE AND I THOUGHT MAY BE NHTSA IS THE BEST BET. PLEASE TELL ME WHETHER IT WILL BE THE SAME TO ANY CAR OR WILL THAT BE ONLY ON NISSAN MAXIMA. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-08-10
- VIN: JN1CA21D0TT
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 NISSAN MAXIMA. THE CONTACT MUST MAKE 5 OR 6 ATTEMPTS IN ORDER TO START THE VEHICLE. OCCASIONALLY, HE MUST DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO THE FLOOR FOR THE VEHICLE TO START. THE FAILURE OCCURS EACH TIME HE ATTEMPTS TO START THE VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY AFTER IT HAS BEEN PARKED FOR SEVERAL HOURS. IF THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN AND IS STILL WARM, IT TAKES 2 OR 3 ATTEMPTS TO START. THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED THAT THE FAILURE MAY BE FUEL SYSTEM RELATED AND HE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, FILTERS, WIRING HARNESS, AND STARTER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS DIFFICULT TO SHIFT. HE BELIEVES THAT THE ELECTRICAL SENSOR IS NOT READING CORRECTLY. THE PURCHASE DATE AND DEALER INFORMATION WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 157,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 143,000.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-05-27
- VIN: JN1CA21D6TT
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: 1. I WAS PARKING NEAR DOWNTOWN SEATTLE AT A CURB PARKING SPOT. WHILE ALIGNING MY CAR TO THE CURB WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FROM IDLE SPEED TO FULL THROTTLE. BY PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD AND SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL FROM DRIVE POSITION, I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CARD FROM LURCHING FORWARD AND HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT. THE CAR RETURNED TO IDLE SPEED AFTER SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL. 2. I HAD STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AT A FOUR-WAY INTERSECTION ON MERCER ISLAND, WA BEHIND ANOTHER CAR. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. SUDDENLY, THE CAR ACCELERATED FORWARD WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE POSITION FROM IDLE SPEED TO FULL THROTTLE. I HAD TO PUSH VERY HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO PREVENT MY CAR FROM HITTING THE CAR AHEAD AND PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL POSITION AFTER WHICH THE CAR RETURNED TO IDLE SPEED. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-10-01
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: PLEASE REFER TO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (NTB98-001) WHEN ROUNDING A CURVE OR GOING OVER A DIP IN THE ROAD, AT 40 MILES PER HOUR THE CAR STARTING WOBBLING AND SWAYING AND YOU THINK IT IS GOING TO FLIP OVER. IT IS VERY SCARY. THE WOBBLE IS NOT INDUCED BY THE STEERING WHEEL, IT JUST HAPPENS. THERE IS NO REAL WARNING. I BELIEVE IT IS THE REAR LINK ARM BUSHINGS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS STORIES FROM OTHERS PERTAINING TO THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THE WEB SITE (TOPIX.NET) SEARCH PATHFINDER PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN A MUST FIX FOR MANY AND IT IS VERY SCARY AND COULD BE VERY VERY DANGEROUS IF IT HAPPENED AT HIGHER SPEEDS. IT WOULD DEFINATELY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND/OR CRASH.

- VIN: JN1CA21D6TT
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES AFTER 55-60 TRIPS TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. IN ADDITION TO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING THE ENGINE MADE A PINGING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING. ON ONE OCCASION,THE MECHANIC CLEANED THE COILS. THE INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP SUGGESTED REPLACING THE EGR VALVE, BUT THE CONTACT DECLINED BECAUSE THE STATE WOULD NOT ALLOW THE INSTALLATION OF A USED EGR VALVE. THE CODES WERE CLEARED SEVERAL TIMES IN ORDER TO GET THE LIGHT TO GO OFF. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALWAYS COMES BACK ON. SOMETIMES IT CAME ON WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF BEING REPAIRED.*AK

STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-20
- VIN: JN1CA21D0TT
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON EVEN AFTER ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WAS DONE. THE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING AFTER THE 1ST YEAR I BOUGHT IT. IN THE 5 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE CAR, THE STARTER HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS REPLACED, TIE ROD ENDS WERE REPLACED, STRUTS WERE REPLACED, A NEW MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE WAS REPLACED, AND THIS YEAR, 2 OIL LEAKS DEVELOPED, 1 INSIDE THE ENGINE. THE MECHANIC SAID THIS WAS A DEFECT OF NISSAN, NOT ANYTHING THAT I DID OR DIDN'T DO. IT COST OVER $700 TO FIX THE LEAKS. THE LEAKS BLEW OUT THE SENSORS, AND THE CAR DIDN'T PASS THE EMISSIONS. I SPENT ANOTHER $850 IN GETTING NEW SENSORS. ONCE THE SENSORS WERE REPLACED, THE MECHANIC SAID THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE FUEL INJECTOR AND HE HAD TO REPLACE THAT. THERE IS STILL A SHORT IN THE CAR SOMEWHERE AS ONE OF THE BACK LIGHTS TURNS OFF AND ON WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT, AS DOES THE LIGHT FOR THE RADIO CONSOLE (WHICH ITS THE ORIGINAL RADIO THAT CAME WITH THE CAR, SO IT'S NOT LIKE SOMEONE MESSED AROUND WITH IT.) AFTER REPLACING THE SENSORS, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE 2ND EMISSIONS TEST, WHICH IT REJECTED THE CAR BECAUSE IT WASN'T READY YET. THE MECHANIC SPENT 7 (YES, SEVEN) DAYS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR, ONLY TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE DASH BOARD. AFTER 1 DAY OF DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. NOW THE CAR FEELS UNSAFE WHEN I'M DRIVING IT, AS WHEN THE CAR HITS 20 MPH AND 40 MPH, THE CAR JERKS TO THE RIGHT AND I HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON MAKING SURE I DON'T HIT ANYONE. NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT IS EITHER. THE FAN IS STARTING TO SOUND LOUD WHEN THE AIR/HEAT IS ON OR WHEN THE CAR IS IDLE (STOPPED AT A LIGHT) AND THE AIR ONLY GETS COLD WHEN ITS COOL OUTSIDE, NOT WHEN IT'S HOT. I SPENT $22,000 BUYING THIS CAR, AND ABOUT ANOTHER $5000 IN REPAIRS TO DATE AND ITS NOT YET 10 YRS. OLD. *AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-03-08
- VIN: JN1CA21D9TT
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WATER PUMP LEAKS RADIATOR COOLANT. THIS HAS LED TO ENGINE-OVERHEATING AND MAY CAUSE SEVERE ENGINE FAILURE (A SAFETY ISSUE). ON CHECKING WITH DEALER, THE ESTIMATED REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF WATER PUMP MAY COST AROUND $750. THIS IS AN UNUSUALLY HIGH COST FOR WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT. WITH THE CAR BEING A 96 MODEL HAVING ONLY A MILEAGE OF ABOUT 50 K, THIS KIND OF WATER PUMP FAILURE IS PROBABLY UNSEEN ON MOST OTHER CAR MODELS. THEREFORE, IT IS SUGGESTED TO THE MANUFACTURER TO INVESTIGATE INTO POSSIBLE DESIGN DEFECTS OF THE WATER PUMP. *NLM

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that unfortunately my car was stolen. I'm currently in the market for a new one and I was wondering if you had any Subaru recommendations? Thank you so much for your help!
-
This is my second car. I previously owned a Mitsubishi Mirage, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I wanted something with a bit more style, and I found it in this car. I absolutely love the interior - the black leather makes me feel like I'm driving a luxury car. While the back of the car may be a bit plain, I spruced it up with some 18
-
When I got this car, it already had about 150,000 miles on it. Despite the high mileage, it runs like a brand new car. I really enjoy driving it. If only I had known how good it was, I would have gotten one a few years ago!
-
This car has been fantastic! It's been such a pleasure to own and drive. The only reason I'm selling is because I no longer have a need for it. I bought a 96 (stick) because several of my friends had 95s and 97s, and I haven't had a single problem in the entire 50,000 miles I've driven it. The ride is so smooth and fun, the interior is incredibly comfortable, the Bose sound system is amazing, and I personally think the older body style is better than the newer models. It was such a great deal for a used vehicle, no doubt about it!
-
I'm not a fan of driving, but I've found a way to make it more enjoyable. I treat myself to a car that not only makes it tolerable, but downright fun. I currently have the SE 5-speed, which is the best car I've owned so far. It outperforms my previous Nissan Z cars and Ford Probe GT, both of which were also 5-speeds. The shifter is a dream, the clutch is just right, and the power is a blast. The handling is superb, and the seats are very comfortable. The sound system is also top-notch, one of the best factory systems I've ever heard. I'm already planning to get another 5-speed SE when this one finally gives up the ghost.

This car has been pretty decent overall. Compared to most FWD cars from that era, it performs quite well. Although the steering is a bit light, which makes handling not as enjoyable. The stock suspension is complete trash, with a lot of body roll and a ridiculous ride height, even with SE setup. The exterior design is quite bland, especially the 95-96 models, but the 97-99 models look much better. The interior is also quite bland, but at least it's simply laid out. The cabin seems cramped for some reason, partly because the ceiling isn't as high as most other cars I drive. For a 140k mile car, it's been pretty reliable. It has never left me on the side of the road, but interestingly enough, it did strand me in my own driveway.

This car is actually pretty good! I haven't had any trouble with it, it's super reliable. However, the overall exterior design is a bit sleepy and boring, especially the rear end... it sort of blends in too much. The interior build quality is decent, but not really up to par with competitors. Also, the stock suspension (even the SE sport version) is pretty soft and not very sporty. And let's be honest, a 4 door sports car? Not if it's FWD.
