2009 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2009 Nissan Maxima problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2009 Nissan Maxima, several common problems have been reported:
- Steering Issues: Owners have reported steering problems, including the steering column locking up and needing replacement. This issue can pose a serious safety risk as it affects the vehicle's ability to steer properly.
- Airbag Malfunctions: Complaints include airbag warning lights staying on or airbags failing to deploy during accidents. These issues compromise the vehicle's safety features and can increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
- Suspension Concerns: A recall was issued for cracked suspension and strut insulators, which could lead to the strut rod popping out of place. Continued reports of suspension issues highlight potential safety hazards and the need for repairs.
- Transmission Reliability: Despite being a trooper that can last up to 300,000 miles with proper care, some owners have experienced transmission-related problems. Ensuring regular maintenance and addressing any transmission issues promptly is crucial to prolong the vehicle's lifespan.
- Storage Space Limitations: The 2009 Maxima offers 14 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, which may be insufficient for some users requiring more storage capacity. This limitation could impact the practicality and utility of the vehicle for certain owners.
- Comparative Reliability: When compared to competitors like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the 2009 Nissan Maxima stands out for its overall cost and reliability. Despite some reported issues, the Maxima offers a competitive option in the mid-size sedan segment.
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and awareness of potential safety concerns for owners of the 2009 Nissan Maxima. Addressing these issues proactively can help ensure a safer and more reliable driving experience.

The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the front-end mounting strut insulator. The vehicle was not repaired. STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-27
- VIN: 1N4AA51E89C
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: In 2016 we had to replace the steering lock mechanism. Went to start the car and a security light came on and car would not start , and had to get the car towed from work. We paid to have the part replaced on 12/23/2016. Now, 11/27/2023 we had the same issue with the steering lock mechanism where we tried to start the vehicle and it won’t due to this same issue. Now having to get the car towed again to have the part replaced. I saw there was a voluntary safety recall on this issue in 2017. We did not receive any letter stating our car was affected, yet we replaced the part in 2016 with no reimbursement and now again in 2023 with the part doubling in cost.
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
- VIN: 1N4AA51E59C
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The airbag light is on and blinking. I did call the local Nissan dealer and they told me there was not a recall for this problem on the 2009 Nissan maxima. This seems very unfair because several recalls have been made on the airbags. Also I was told over 5 years ago that the struts on my car were defective when I had my brakes repaired. I did call the Nissan company and they told me my year was not included in the recall. My car was driving so badly I was having problems controlling it and I had to go ahead and get the front struts replaced and shocks replaced on the back and they had to put a stabilizer bar (sway Bar Link) on it also. I recently had this done. This airbag light had come on 4 years ago but I was thinking it was my seat belt light. When I would remove my purse to the floor it would go off. My brother took my manual out and told me it was the airbag and not the seat belt light. It blinks all the time now. I firmly believe the Nissan company know this 2009 Maxima has defects but they refuse to acknowledge it. Appears they could care less about our safety.

- Summary: On 9/12/22, my son purchased a 2009 Nissan Maxima from Street Cars. My son was told that the car did not pass the state inspection, but all items on the list were taken care of. The salesman noted the Air Intake Tube would be ordered for the car and installed once received. My son paid $5299 in cash. My son wanted to pay with a cashier's check, but the salesperson requested cash. On the way home to Woodbridge from Fredericksburg, the vehicle began to slow down as if it were going to cut off. My son slowed down and proceeded home. On 9/13/22, my son went to Minnieville Exxon to have the vehicle emissions test completed, and the car was listed as "Not Ready." In addition, seven (7) additional issues must be addressed before the vehicle can pass. We began calling the salesman at 11:45 am, sent a text message at 12:17 pm, and called until 1:30 pm. Due to what we felt were deceptive practices, we traveled to Street Cars in Fredericksburg to speak with the salesman about returning the vehicle for a refund. The salesman stated the vehicle was sold "As Is” and is on the Bill of Sales. We asked about the sign on the front of his business which states "3-Day Return Policy". The salesman said it does not apply to cash cars or discounted cars. When asked about the items on the failed inspection report being taken care of, the salesperson refused to discuss it further. The salesperson stated my son should use the warranty, where he will be responsible for half the cost of all repairs. When the salesperson was asked about the Air Intake Tube order, he refused to provide a confirmation number for the order, a telephone number, or a location for the company. My son did not receive any title paperwork and was told to sign the vehicle delivery form when items had not been received. We contacted ASC Warranty company which was provided with the vehicle, and they told us to take the car to any automotive repair shop for an estimate. We took the vehicle to Sheehy Nissan in Manas

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-07
- VIN: 1n4aa51e39c
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The airbag warning light on the dash started blinking. The local dealer investigated and advised that the front passenger airbag occupancy sensor was defective. Repair would require complete replacement of the front passenger seat cushion at an estimated cost of about $2,000. The mechanic told me he has seen the exact same issue numerous times for the Maxima of multiple model years. This appears to be a persistent problem with these sensors as reflected in multiple Nissan user forum entries. This is a safety issue that has been detected on multiple Maxima model years over the past several years. It needs to be fully investigated and a safety recall needs issued to hold the manufacturer accountable. The customers should not have to bear the expensive repair.

The cost and labor to replace these parts is approx. $1,400. I can't afford to repair the vehicle at this time as I am unemployed due to Covid-19. We recently test drove the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, VW Passat, and Audi A4, but we were absolutely blown away by the new Nissan Maxima. The Maxima's stunning looks, both inside and out, along with its impressive performance, really set it apart from the other cars we drove. The handling is tight and the car has so much power that it's hard not to want to speed. The only downside we found was the recommended premium fuel and the gas mileage. Although the dealer downplayed the premium fuel, we had to ask about it. Despite this, we are still getting the EPA fuel rating of 26-27 highway using regular fuel.

I went to test drive this car after seeing one on the street and I was instantly hooked. The interior is beautiful, the seats are comfortable, and the features are abundant. The sound system is one of the best I have ever heard, and I consider myself critical in regards to that. The ride quality is great, and I have received a lot of compliments from people at gas stations, car washes, co-workers, and friends. I was considering the G35 and TL, but I was instantly sold on the Maxima the moment I sat in it.

Hey there! I was wondering if anyone has experienced an issue with the a/c on a 2009 Maxima not working while driving? It seems to work fine when the car is idle, but as soon as I start driving, it stops working. I've taken it to the dealer 5 times to get it fixed, but unfortunately, they haven't been able to resolve the issue. I'm now considering pursuing the lemon law. Nissan has been unhelpful so far, and they've only suggested taking it back to the dealer for another look. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Nissan really did a great job with this car! It's awesome and definitely worth the investment. Why spend fifty grand on a euro car when you can get more bang for your buck with this beauty? I was considering a M35X, but the Maxima was so good that I decided to save the extra 12 grand.

I have the SV model with the technology and cold weather package. This car easily fits three car seats across the back seat, which made this purchase even easier. The V6 290 horsepower engine is very powerful, and the handling is unreal. I have been getting a lot of second looks driving this car around town, and have been stopped a couple of times at lights. This car has so many extras, making it a great deal for the price.

Congratulations on your new Maxima 3.5 SV! It looks gorgeous and rides pretty well. However, we're sorry to hear that you've encountered some issues with the passenger side window and the compact flash drive cover. We understand how frustrating this must be for you. We recommend taking your car back to the dealership to have these issues resolved. We hope that they will be able to fix everything to your satisfaction. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I purchased this car used a year ago. It had one previous owner and appeared to be very well kept. Unfortunately, it recently started making an awful clanking noise. At first, I thought it was just loose ground effects and the wind catching, but to my surprise, I found myself stuck on the side of the road. After doing some research, I discovered that the timing chain may be the issue, and it will cost around $1700 to fix. I'm feeling quite frustrated with Nissan and have lost faith in their products. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I did find several articles online that mention a timing chain class action lawsuit for years 2004-2008, which makes me wonder if Nissan still hasn't resolved this issue in 2009.

I have owned this vehicle for two years now and unfortunately, it has experienced several major issues. The steering wheel column lock was recalled, which caused a momentary lock while driving. Additionally, the driver side window required a new motor and the front end struts needed replacement. Given the frequency and severity of these issues, I have decided not to invest any further funds into this vehicle. It is disappointing to have experienced so many problems with this car, as I have never encountered such significant issues with any of my previous vehicles.

I recently purchased a 2009 Nissan Maxima on 7/19/20, but unfortunately it broke down on my way home. The mechanic informed me that the head gasket had gone and that the engine was beyond repair due to its high mileage of 169k. Despite having just spent $4800 in cash, I needed a new engine. Fortunately, a friend of a friend was able to provide me with a new engine with only 90k miles on it, including installation for $1200. Although I was worried, the carfax checked out and the title was not restored/salvage. The test drive went smoothly, and there were no warning lights or check engine light until it broke down in the middle of a busy street, where I also got rear-ended at the same time. I hope that the previous owner was not aware of any issues and that there were no temporary fixes made to the car. I am now hopeful that the car will work properly and that I can trust it.

I had high expectations for the new Maxima, but unfortunately they were not met. The ride is too rough and the back seat room is terrible. I may have jumped the gun on this one. It's a bit too sporty and feels more like a coupe. I'm not trying to knock Nissan, but I am disappointed with the Maxima. If I could make one recommendation to anyone, it would be to lease instead of purchasing.
