1997 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Negative 1997 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Edmund Schulist 2024-08-06

I purchased this car used at 101k from a dealer who picked it up at auction. I was confident in the 3.5 engine's durability, so I decided to buy it. Over the years, I have replaced some typical high mileage parts such as the front axle/cv boots, power steering pump, starter, ignition switch, and most recently the master cylinder, which brings me to my current dilemma with the brake equipment. Despite spending around 3k in the past 5 years and 89k miles, I have experienced poor gas mileage and reliability issues. However, I have found that the parts for this car are cheaper than those for a Toyota.

  2. Conor Koss 2024-01-22

The car performed great for the first 95,000 miles. However, over the years, I have had to replace a few parts such as the front left strut (which was covered by the 100,000 warranty I added at purchase), the radio volume knob and speakers, the starter, the alternator, and the right front wheel bearing. Currently, the front brakes are creaking horribly, even though they are quite new. After spending $1780 in the last two years, I have decided not to spend any more money on this car. Unfortunately, I have lost faith in Nissan's reliability. Despite treating this car like a baby, it has started shutting down on me.

Positive 1997 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Emery Senger 2025-01-05

I can tell you that this car has been a reliable companion since day one, and even after 4,655 days, I still love it just as much. Although Nissan may not have focused on the aesthetics of the Maxima in 1997, they certainly built a sturdy and enjoyable car to drive. We recently decided to upgrade to a new model, but we couldn't bring ourselves to choose any other car. We are now proud owners of a 2010 Maxima.

I recently inherited my uncle's car, which he drove extensively. Despite having already clocked up 330,000 miles, it still runs like a dream. I've had to replace the starter and will soon need to replace the alternator, as well as some other parts like the brakes, but overall it's been a reliable vehicle. People are always impressed when I tell them how many miles it has on the clock!

I bought this car because I knew it would be reliable, comfortable, and nice. It has been all of those things and I would definitely buy another Maxima.

Great all around car with a sporty nature. It's also less expensive (on the used market) than a similarly equipped Camry or Accord. The quality is better than a Taurus and there's lots of room. The silky-smooth V6 provides decent power. I'm happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to friends.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've been the only owner and I've never had a problem with it. I'm actually considering getting a Maxima for my next car, which is something I've never done before in my 35 years of buying cars.
