1990 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 1990 Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima, particularly the 1990 model, has been reported to have several common problems. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hose, which can lead to a lack of cold air or no air conditioning at all. This problem is often caused by a crimped connection in the hose, which can be fixed by replacing the hose or repairing the connection.

Another common problem with the Nissan Maxima is transmission malfunction and failure. This issue has been reported to be particularly prevalent in the 2004 model year, but it can also affect earlier models like the 1990 version. Transmission problems can manifest as jerking or hesitation when shifting, and they can be costly to repair. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely, which can cost several thousand dollars.

Ignition coil failure is another issue that has been reported by owners of older Nissan Maxima models, including the 1990 version. This problem can cause the check engine light to turn on and can damage other coils if left unaddressed. The ignition coil is responsible for generating the spark that ignites the fuel in the engine, so a failed ignition coil can prevent the engine from starting or cause it to run poorly. Replacing the ignition coil can be a relatively expensive repair, with costs ranging from $500 to over $660, depending on labor and component pricing.

The 1990 Nissan Maxima is also known to have issues with the power steering pump. This problem can cause noisy and unstable steering, and it is often caused by leaks in the power steering pump. The leaking fluid can drip on the lower control arm bushing, causing it to deteriorate and fail. In extreme cases, this problem can affect overall vehicle control, so it is important to have it addressed as soon as possible. Repair costs for this issue can vary, but they are known to be on the expensive side, averaging from $400 to around $1000.

In summary, the Nissan Maxima, including the 1990 model, has several common problems that owners should be aware of. These include leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses, transmission malfunction and failure, ignition coil failure, and power steering pump leaks. While these issues can be costly to repair, they are generally not indicative of a larger underlying problem with the vehicle. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure that the Nissan Maxima remains a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive.

What is the common problem with Nissan Maxima?

Are old Nissan Maximas good cars?

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: REAR BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT UP ON A REGULAR BASIS WHEN THE BRAKE PAD IS APPLIED. THE CONNECTORS THAT TOUCH THE LIGHT BULBS ARE VERY SENSITIVE. THE SLIGHTEST MOVEMENT CAUSES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BULB AND CONNETOR TO FAIL. I HAVE NOTICED THIS PROBLEM WITH NUMEROUS MAXIMAS ON THE ROAD. THIS PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE REAR LIGHTS AS WELL (NOT ONLY WHEN BRAKING). THE REAR 3RD BRAKE LIGHT ASSEMBLY HAS CORRODED AND DOES NOT PERMIT THE BULB TO BE INSTALLED. THIS PROBLEM EXISTED SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR WITH 92,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER FROM A PRIVATE PARTY. ATTEMPS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC ARE IN VEIN BECAUSE THE PROBLEM REOCCURS WITHIN A COUPLE DAYS AFTER BEING 'REPAIRED'. SEEMS AS IF ONLY HALF OF THE TOAL CONNECTORS ARE IN EVERYDAY WORKING CONDITION. THE OTHER HALF TURN ON AND ON SPORADICALLY. THIS MAKES IT SEEM AS IF I HAVE SOME 'TAIL LIGHTS OUT'. THIS IN TURN GIVES POLICE OFFICERS A REASON TO CONTINUALLY PULL ME OVER AND LET ME KNOW ABOUT THE LIGHTING SITUATION. IN ADDITION, THE NON-WORKING CONNECTORS GIVE THE CAR A POOR APPEARANCE. LASTLY, THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE REAR LIGHTING MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENT IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS. NLM

Positive 1990 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Rex Bradtke 2025-01-02

I've owned my 1990 SE manual since '99 and have put over 202,000 miles on it. It's a fun and fast car that's geared low, but still manages to get up to 32 mpg on the highway. On average, I get about 26 mpg and as low as 22 mpg in the city. Over the years, I've had to replace a few parts, including the timing belt, alternator (twice), rack and pinion, clutch master cylinder, brake master cylinder, two fuel injectors (changing all six and ensuring they're flow matched/balanced can improve gas mileage), two front struts, all four window regulators (I recommend OEM for the fronts and aftermarket for the back), and the flex pipe (twice). For the flex pipe, I found that cutting it out from the J-pipe and clamping in an aftermarket full braid (not corrugated inner) worked best. I've had great experiences with General Ameri G4S, Bar.Bravaris, and BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires, and prefer 215/60R15 size.

  2. Reece Hand 2024-11-08

This car is an absolute ball to drive! The sport suspension is so fun and spritely, and the V6 really moves the car right out. Plus, the great gearbox makes it one of my favorite cars to drive.

  3. Bradford Erdman 2024-11-06

I bought this car in Nashville and drove it up to Michigan and I absolutely love it! It has been totally reliable and always ready to go. Although I have had to replace the starter, alternator, and a few minor things, it has been worth it. With 168,000 miles on it, it shows no signs of slowing down. It may not turn heads, but who cares when it pays me to drive it! Overall, it has been a wonderful investment and I plan to drive it until it can't go any further.

  4. Mckenna Kozey 2024-09-27

This car has been such a joy to drive and has proven to be incredibly dependable. The cost of ownership has been minimal over the years. I've put 150,000 miles on it and have yet to experience any major issues.

  5. Kale Schimmel 2024-09-16

I learned to drive a stick with this car and it's actually the first car I've owned. Although the brakes are a little stiff, the ride is better than my parents' 04 Saturn and more comfortable than their 98 Suburban.
