2022 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2022 Nissan Maxima problems

The 2022 Nissan Maxima has been reported to have several electrical issues by its owners, as detailed in . One of the most common problems is with the ventilated front seats, which intermittently fail to work. Despite several visits to the dealership, the issue remains unresolved, with the dealer unable to diagnose the problem. The dealership has also reported that only three other Maximas have had this issue, and Nissan's technical support line has not been able to provide a solution.

In addition to the ventilated front seats issue, other electrical problems have been reported, including the memory seat function not always returning the seats and mirrors to their previous positions, the windshield wipers randomly turning on, the blind spot warning light coming on randomly, and the car randomly chiming. The dealership has been unable to diagnose or fix these issues, despite checking fuses and ensuring that wiring is tight.

These electrical issues are a significant concern for Maxima owners, as they are unable to rely on the car's electrical systems. Furthermore, the dealership's inability to diagnose and fix the issues is frustrating, and there are concerns that the warranty may expire before the issues are resolved. Owners are advised to document all interactions with the dealership and request written documentation of any attempted repairs.

It is worth noting that Consumer Reports expects the 2023 Maxima to have about average reliability compared to other new cars.

Overall, while the 2022 Nissan Maxima has been praised for its stylish exterior, spacious interior, and gutsy V6 engine, the reported electrical issues are a significant concern. Owners are advised to document all interactions with the dealership and request written documentation of any attempted repairs. Additionally, potential buyers should be aware of the reported electrical issues and consider the potential costs of repair after the warranty expires.

What is the common problem with Nissan Maxima?

A prevalent concern among Nissan Maxima owners is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning (AC) hose, often causing the AC to blow warm air. This issue is notably frequent in 2001 and 2004-2012 models, typically surfacing around 87,000 miles.

Are the new Nissan Maximas reliable?

We expect the 2023 Maxima to have about average reliability when compared to other new cars.

Why is Nissan discontinuing the Maxima?

With many modern drivers preferring SUVs and crossovers to sedans, as well as the rise in popularity of electric vehicles, the automaker decided to scale back sedan production to other models, thereby discontinuing the Maxima.

Is it worth it to buy a Nissan Maxima?

The Maxima offers room for five in a well-executed cabin that's full of soft-touch materials, simple controls, and tons of high-end features. Front-seat legroom is among the best in the class, while headroom is average. Rear-seat space is not as generous as it is in larger rivals such as the 300.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-10
  • VIN: 1N4AA6CV4NC
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On February 10, 2023 I purchased a 2022 Nissan Maxima with a little over 19,000 miles on it. Which has a warranty for up to 104,000 miles. Currently at a little over 25,000 miles. Maybe a week later I noticed a noise coming from the rear, so I informed the Finance Manager, Paul. He then goes on to tell me that he's going to schedule a service appointment. The day I went to Barnes Crossing of Starkville they kept saying they didn't see anything or didn't know what was going on. So the finance manager scheduled an appointment with Nissan. When I get there is when I find out the rear end of the car has a lot of parts not connected. As the man at Nissan stated, it's a mess. Which he also took pictures of and sent them to me. Which I sent the pictures to the Finance Manager, Paul. He asks how much is the broken parts, which I had no clue due to it would have to go to a body shop. He mentioned that he would look for another Maxima, that he could trade me out. My complaints about this car startedHe mentioned I would have to take it was going to take a body repair shop. I then inform Barnes Crossing of Starkville. I was told by the finance manager the he would find a body repair shop but never did. Then because there's this strong odor in the car, I tried to get it clean cover it with air fresheners and still the smell is strong. So one day I go in the truck and pull everything out and to my surprise it's full of water. Which I have picture, not only is it full of water looks like mold spots, etc. I tried to clean it and some of the spots would not go. I informed him of this still he was saying they was going to find me another car, still no car. The trunk of the car is steady getting full of water. Nothing is being done, I reached back out and was told I'll have to do the whole process over again because a credit report is only good for 30 days. Which I've been complaining about this car a week after I received it.Mold and water keep appearing I’m sick

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-11
  • VIN: 1N4AA6EV5NC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Panoramic sunroof lining started to droop and hang on the back portion of the panoramic roof blocking my view before the car reached 2,000 miles. Dealership refuses to fix stating they would have a Nissan representative look at it and make the repair stating the cost would be over 3,000 dollars. After bringing my vehicle I’m twice and leaving at the dealership for over a week, it was never looked at and I was told to pick it back up and would be contacted once they speak to Nissan. After dozens of calls and no returned calls with my questions, my car now has 7900 miles and I am stuck with the fabric rolled up and taped to keep from blocking by view. This was done by the dealership prior to me picking up my car from Them. The back seat has the sun and glare constantly in the car due to me not being able to block the light. I’m Still fighting this issue with them. Nissan consumer affairs will not return my calls after the representative left me a message stating I could call them back anytime with any concerns or questions even though my several messages asked that a Nissan engineer or representative inspect my car. My dealership stated, prior to promising me Nissan would look at it, said that someone’s head or a heavy box could have put a dent in the framing around the sun roof from the inside of my car even though no one but my 73 year old mother has sat in the back seat ONE time. I don’t know what else to do to have this taken care of. My brand new car should not have a 3,000 issue I should have to cover the costs for. The steering wheel also rattles when driving and you can hear air flow coming through the back seat area from a window or the sunroof. I also mentioned the air noise issue to Nissan with no return call regarding this.

Negative 2022 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Bartholome Hoeger 2024-06-15

I drove off the dealer's lot in August 2019 and the car was whisper quiet, taking bumpy roads without even a shake. However, by December 2019, the ride was no longer smooth and the road noise was loud. I took it to two dealers, but they said nothing was wrong. I was confused and frustrated. So, I decided to call Nissan's customer service to seek help. Unfortunately, they were unable to assist me and suggested that I take it back to the dealer. I went back to my dealer and the Service Manager and I went for a test drive. He said the car was fine and that the hard ride and road noise was what the younger market wanted. I may have to trade this car in for something that matches the manufacturer's advertising and the expert reviews. My Nissan Maxima does not. Can anyone help me deal with what seems to be a company with no regard for its customers?

I had the worst car experience ever. I will never consider Nissan again!

  3. Dewitt O'Reilly 2024-01-23

We purchased a brand new 2016 Maxima SR and initially loved it. Unfortunately, we experienced a number of issues with the car. It had to be taken to the shop multiple times due to an oil leak, which took three days to find and fix. Additionally, there were at least four factory recalls, all of which were addressed. Recently, a bracket holding the muffler broke, which cost $200 to fix. After driving it home, the emission light came on and we had to return to the dealer. We ended up paying $875.00 to replace an oxygen sensor, but that wasn't the only issue. A transmission code also appeared, indicating that the CVT was slipping and needed to be replaced. Fortunately, this was covered by the drivetrain warranty. Despite having only 43k miles and being well-maintained, we have decided to move on from Nissan. We have owned two Maximas, two Altimas, and a 350z, but we are now ready for a change.

Smooth Ride, Great Acceleration...and Aggressive Steering!

  2. Jarod Erdman 2024-10-03

You've got yourself a great sedan! It's the perfect size and has a quick pickup and excellent handling. It's amazing that you've had it for four years and only needed oil changes - that's impressive! It sounds like you've taken great care of it. Keep up the good work!

  3. Larue Leannon 2024-09-29

I purchased this car brand new and from day one have been blown away by its performance. This is my 4th Nissan and it has been the best by far. The acceleration is smooth, the interior is comfy, and the sound system is nice. I'm sure this won't be my last Maxima!

  4. Cloyd Kuhn 2024-09-11

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Maxima. After doing a lot of research on quiet sedans, I found that the Maxima was the quietest of all, which was my primary goal. I even used a free DB meter to compare road noise and it was better than much higher end brands I test drove. In the end, I chose the SL over the Platinum because of the smoother ride with the 18 inch tires. It's very quiet driving around town, and mostly quiet on the highway, with the exception of roads being repaved, or roads with more grating to keep from sliding. I must say, Carpay is excellent. The Maxima is a solid, well-engineered car with lots of bells and whistles for the price. Overall, I love the handling, drive, and comfort of this Nissan. I've taken a few long road trips so far and really enjoyed the ride. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!

  5. Nico Upton 2024-08-09

The 2019 Nissan Maxima SR is such a joy to drive! The new sundrift color for 19' looks amazing and the car has a very stylish and sleek design. I love traveling and cruising through town in it. I haven't gone anywhere yet without someone complimenting the design.
