2014 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP3EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While pulling into a parking space, I heard my engine racing. Immediately, I felt the car lurch forward. To avoid misapplying my foot to the gas pedal, I withdrew both my feet to the floor, next to the seat. The car continued forward at a fast rate. The car stopped going forward after it struck s building. However, the tires kept spinning, especially the front left tire. The engine ran briefly, until it stopped spontaneously. A few days previously, while driving at about 40 miles per hour on level ground, I felt the gas pedal to be unresponsive. Then it quickly reengaged. I mentioned this to my husband and he suggested that there may have been an air bubble in the fuel line. I don't know if the two events are related. Also, possibly related, I stopped using cruise control, because the car would surge and lapse during use. My insurance company is pursuing spontaneous acceleration. I visited my primary care physician the afternoon of the accident and was diagnosed with whiplash.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP0EC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 11/2022 dash air bag warning light started flashing in 2014 Nissan Maxima. Dealership said air bag sensor (part #873009DH5B)was bad and seat needed to be replaced est cost~$1600. In January, I called dealership to schedule seat replacement and was told part was on back order with no timeline for availability. Called Nissan Consumer Affairs, as recommended by dealership, and was given 3 locations where a seat was in stock. Called first site, seat was no longer available, called second site and purchased seat (~$1670)which was shipped here and installed by dealership for ~$300 on 22 February 2023. Air bag warning did not resolve with new seat, so spent ~$400 to install sensor (next step in the algorithm), still did not resolve warning. So, dealership tested a seat from one of their personal vehicles which did resolve the air bag warning. They determined the new seat that I had purchased was not functional. Since February, dealership has kept the 'new' seat and has been attempting to get it replaced under warranty as it is a new part that malfunctioned. I have had two case numbers with Nissan consumer affairs, made many calls, sent multiple emails detailing this with no response since January when they gave me the 3 in-stock locations. When I call to check on case #, reps say someone tried to call but couldn't leave message. They were able to reach me in January and I have no record of any calls nor issues receiving other calls/voicemail. I will not risk the safety of my family with a potential air bag malfunction in an accident, so have been unable to have a passenger in the front seat for over 6 months. Dealership is communicative and helpful and keeps trying to get the part but they continue to be told that it's not known when the part will be available. I understand supply chain issues and have been patient, but this is a severe safety concern. It's not reasonable for a consumer to be left with an inherently unsafe airbag activation system for over 6 months.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP2EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Over the last couple months I've noticed my vehicle delay acceleration after coming to a stop. I've also noticed jerking while driving at a constant speed. First I thought it was bad gas but the problem has persisted for several fill ups now. I thought maybe the transmission fluid needed to be replaced so I paid a couple hundred bucks to have it serviced. The problem continued. I took it to a local car shop to get it scanned. There were no codes present at the time. A few weeks later and after nearly being struck by three different vehicles in one day, I decided to try a different car repair shop. At the tune of another $91.00 for the diagnosis, this time it threw 5 codes all for transmission. The mechanic proceeded to tell me about all of the problems people have been having with Nissan's and their CVT Transmissions. It's $5k to fix the issue and I'm outside of the extended warranty timeframe. I read about the recent lawsuits against Nissan for this issue. Would be nice if they extended that warranty a little further.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-08
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP9EC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger air bag light warning came on. Diagnostics confirmed the passenger front seat cushion Assy with OCS unit required replacement. The cost is $2108.10 and the part is on back order. This vehicle was purchased new and the passenger side seldom has a passenger. I believe this is a manufacturer responsibility as evidenced by the many recalls documented. The new seat order is placed through Premier Nissan of Metaire, LA. Please consider placing this claim into recall. Thank you for your assistance.

  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Low beam headlights are dangerously low. No matter the quality of bulbs or the clarity of the lights the low beam headlights offer extremely limited visibility. Requires high beams when driving at night. I have had numerous mechanics look at the issue and it stems from a failure of the projector in the headlamp.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-02
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP8EC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CVT transmission suddenly gets stuck on a lower "gear", often going from Drive to 2nd, while driving freeway speeds, causing the engine to rev to very high rpm's and the car to quickly loose power and slow down. The power loss is so dramatic it is difficult to change lanes within traffic in order to pull off the freeway to safety. Often the vehicle speed drops by 30 mph or more. I have taken the car into Nissan on numerous times and they tell me I need a new $7000 transmission even though my car only had 60k miles on her when the issue first started. They know they have an issue with this transmission and they have recalled and replaced transmissions for other vehicles withbthe CVT, Altima and Marano, but not the Maxima. They say because it's a beefier transmission, but it is the same faulty component in all the transmissions despite the size of the transmission. Through my research, this isba widespread problem for Maxima owners within the years of this transmission issue.. It is interesting to note that Nissan decreased the powertrain warranty from 100k mi down to 60k mi for the model years that have this CVT issue, and bumped it back to 100k after the issue was resolved for newer model year cars

All that I felt was glass all over me and in the car. The panoramic roof just shattered by itself. It felt like a pressure blew the top off. A very scary experience that I don’t know what would have happened if I was on high speed on the highway, I might have lost control. I managed to close the sunroof cover and slowly made it to the next exit.

POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-28
  • VIN: 1n4aa5ap1ec
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My cruise control stopped working. I took it to my Nissan dealer where I purchased the car. They advised me I needed a new transmission. However I had just put a new transmission in 3 years prior. I have never had this issue with any other vehicle. I spoke with Nissan consumer affairs who admitted there was an issue with their CVT. But they refused to do anything about it. They stated there is no recall and it’s my responsibility to fix it. The fix is not cheap as the CVT requires a brand new transmission that must be programmed specifically to your vehicle. They were not taking responsibility for the issue that they know is a problem. It is very frustrating to own a vehicle with a company who refuses to fix something they know is wrong. They are not the only ones who mentioned there is an issue. The dealer themselves have seen this numerous times and advised Nissan won’t do anything to make it right with any consumers. This poses a safety hazard in my eyes. Had this gone out at 60 mph it would not shift and could have been a significant safety risk. I am now out over $5,000 to fix the transmission. This is an unacceptable practice and they should be held responsible for continuing the this do nothing and not be forced to make a change in their production and design.

Negative 2014 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Hardy Williamson 2024-10-12

You received a great interest rate on the car and the salesperson was good. However, during the financial paperwork, you found out that the car didn't have much warranty on it. They sold you an additional warranty that was a bit pricey. As an out-of-town buyer with limited time, it was a bit challenging. After driving the car home, you had to leave town for work and didn't have a chance to drive it for two weeks. Once you had the opportunity to drive it, you noticed that the radio doesn't play right when you use the USB or plug anything in the outlet that provides power for chargers. You haven't had the chance to take the car back to have it checked out yet. Other than that, the car runs great!

  2. Jimmie Gaylord 2024-08-26

We had a great experience with our 2013 Maxima SV Premium Tech Package for 5,000 miles, until it unfortunately broke down in a remote location due to a timing chain issue. However, we are grateful that the dealership is taking care of the problem and providing us with a brand new engine. We appreciate the kindness of the dealership, who offered us a fair price of 28K for the car we purchased just 3 months ago for 35K.

Positive 2014 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Titus Kohler 2024-11-09

Your 2013 Maxima SV sounds like a fantastic car! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it. From the trips you've taken to Georgia to the day-to-day driving, it seems like it's been a reliable and enjoyable ride. With its sleek appearance, decent fuel efficiency, and impressive speed, it's no wonder you're still happy with it after two years. Regular maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations are important, but it's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any issues or problems with it. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Javon Prohaska 2024-11-03

    Dependable, efficient, and peppy!

  3. Wilfredo Wilkinson 2024-10-14

I purchased my car in April and have already driven 10,000 miles. Overall, I am very happy with it. Although, I must admit, I wasn't too thrilled two weeks after purchasing it. However, time and the service department have healed all wounds. Unfortunately, within a week of purchase, the steering wheel controls stopped working. We initially thought it was a fuse issue, but it turned out to be a problem with the cable system. Since the replacement, it has worked perfectly fine. Two weeks after taking possession, I had an issue with the car shutting off. It went into On mode and drained the battery. I had to make another 25-mile trip to the dealer, only to be lectured on how to turn the car on/off properly. This is our 3rd Nissan, so we know how to turn it off. It has shot into the On mode since, but we are careful to watch for it.

  4. Jacey Carroll 2024-09-15

I hope you're doing well! I was hoping to get the sports and technology package, but ended up with the Maxima SV with the tech package. However, I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm not disappointed at all. Despite the car being about 4 years old, it runs like new. Overall, I'm quite happy with the car.

  5. Dewayne Feeney 2024-09-07

Everything about this car is almost perfect, except for the safety and technology. The safety could be improved as you are quite close to the front window and the airbags could be better. Additionally, the technology could be improved as it only has a basic screen. However, overall it is a good car and I would recommend it!
