2013 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-05
  • VIN: 1N4AA5AP9DC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: 1. Both headlights on dim are so dim that you cannot drive safely, they do not project in front of the car far enough to see at night, dawn or dusk. I am concerned if other cars I meet can even see me approaching. My flashlight shines brighter and farther. I have replaced the bulbs for the dim lights and it did no good. 2. Drove to California and was in west Texas after dark, could not see the road after dark. 3. My relative is a mechanic and he has confirmed the defective illumination with my dim lights. 4. It has not been confirmed by any officials such as insurance or police. 5. I noticed this problem about 1 year ago. I have been having to run bright lights if I must drive after dark. This is dangerous, illegal if meeting another car, etc. This is a seriously dangerous problem. I have researched on the internet for several weeks looking for a solution. I finally ran across your website. I did see that the Nissan Altima had a recall for their defective headlights. This should also be a recall for the Maxima. I have driven Nissan's for many years and never had this defect. I don't know how recalls are initiated but if it is through the nhtsa it should be investigated promptly as this issue could cost someone's life. If this is the agency that initiates a recall this should happen NOW. All of us Maxima drivers who are having this issue of which according to my research are many, would appreciate any help. I'm sure many Maxima drivers are not aware there is a complaint procedure, I didn't. I am going to have to go to an auto parts retailer, buy two headlight assemblies and use a body shop to install and this will be very expensive. Thank you for your help.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-01
  • VIN: 1N4AA5APXDC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I WAS TRAVELING FROM HOUSTON, TX TO DALLAS, TX MIDDAY ON MAY 1, 2021. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES OUTSIDE OF DALLAS ON I-45 TRAVELING 75 MPH WHEN I SUDDENLY FELT A SPUTTER AND THEN THE SPEED INSTANTLY DECREASED FROM 75 MPH TO 20 MPH ON A BUSY MAJOR INTERSTATE. I WAS ALMOST HIT TWICE AS I TRIED TO EXIT THE INTERSTATE WITH CARS TRAVELING UPWARDS OF 75+ MPH, BLOWING AND HONING AND CURSING ME. I MADE IT OFF THE INTERSTATE AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. AFTER MAKING SEVERAL CALLS FOR HELP, I WAS INSTRUCTED BY A MECHANIC TO WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND RESTART THE CAR AND TRY TO ACCELERATE WHILE ON THE FEEDER. SO I DID, AND THE CAR DID ACCELERATE ENOUGH TO GET BACK ON THE INTERSTATE. I HAD TO DO THIS 5 TIMES TO GET THE REMAINDER OF THE 40 MILES TO M DESTINATION. I TOOK MY CAR TO METRO DALLAS NISSAN IN FLOWER MOUND, TX ON MAY 3, 2021. I WAS TOLD THE INSPECTION FOUND CODES P1778, P0778 FOUND IN ECM AND TCM FOUND TRANSMISSION TO BE SLIPPING AND THEREFORE, THE CVT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.....= $5523.00!!!! I HAVE ALWAYS HAD MY CAR SERVICED AT NISSAN DEALERSHIPS, MAINTAINED THE CAR IMPECCABLY, DRIVEN WITH CARE AND I AM DEVASTATED! ALTHOUGH THE CAR IS 8 YEARS OLD WITH 139K MILES, THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO NEED REPLACING EXCEPT FOR DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT FROM NISSAN. I PLAN TO CONTINUE TO PURSUE THE MATTER. I CANNOT AFFORD TO SPEND $5K ON A CAR I WORKED SO HARD TO PAY OFF.

  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE LOW BEAM HEAD LIGHTS DO NOT REFLECT HARDLY ANY LIGHT ON THE ROAD AT NIGHT. IT IS DANGEROUS AS YOU CAN NOT SEE THE ROAD AT NIGHT. MY FOG LIGHTS GIVE OFF MORE LIGHT THEN MY LOW BEAMS. I HAVE REPLACED THE LIGHTS AND IT MAKES NO DIFFERNCE. I HAVE TRIED 4 DIFFERENT LOW BEAM LIGHTS AND IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN THE LIGHT OUTPUT. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BY NISSAN, THERE ARE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ONLINE REGARDING THIS SAME ISSUE! IT'S VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT THE DEALER SHIP WANTS 1000 DOLLARS TO CHANGE THE WHOLE LIGHT ASSEMBLY. NO OTHER CAR NEEDS THIS DONE, YOU CHANGE A LIGHT BULB. WHY DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY BECAUSE I DRIVE A NISSAN MAXIMA? THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE THAT THE REFLECTOR LENS IN THE LOW BEAMS DECAY. THAT'S A MANUFACTURER DEFECT.

I REFINANCED THE VEHICLE IN 2018. SHORTLY AFTER THAT I RECEIVED I LETTER IN THE MAIL FROM NISSAN OF A WARRANTY POLICY ENHANCEMENT WHICH WAS FOR COMPLETE EVAP TUBE BLOCKAGE. READING FURTHER THE LETTER DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT MY CAR WAS DOING. SO I TAKE THE CAR TO PISCHKE MOTORS NISSAN FOR REPAIRS. THE CAR HAD 69978 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT HAD TO BE A COMPLETE EVAP TUBE BLOCKAGE TO BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. I WAS THINKING THAT THATS WHAT IT HAD TO BE BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MY CAR WAS DONG. WELL THE TECH GUY STATES THAT HE CAN GET SMOKE TO RUN THROUGH THE EVAP SYSTEM, VENT VALVE WORKING, FOUND AIR TO PASS THROUGH THE FUEL FILTER AND BYPASS LINE AND HE STATES THAT ITS ACTING LIKE THE FUEL TANK IS HAVING AN INTERNAL OBSTRUCTION. I HAD TO PAY $116.05 FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS AND THEY TRIED TO SELL ME A NEW GAS TANK FOR $ 1200.00. NISSAN SENT ME THE LETTER BECAUSE THEY KNEW THE VEHICLES HAD ISSUES. WHY SHOULDN'T THEY HAVE TO COVER A PARTIAL BLOCKAGE? I'M VERY UPSET THAT I HAD TO PAY OUT MONEY AND NOTHING WAS FIXED. SEEMED LIKE A SCAM TO ME.

Negative 2013 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Barrett Funk 2024-05-19

I recently leased a 2012 Maxima Sport after turning in my 2009 model. While I enjoyed my previous Maxima, I must say that the newer model is not quite up to par. The 2009 Maxima was a beautiful car that appealed to both young and old alike, with exceptional handling and a classy interior and exterior. Unfortunately, the newer model seems to have lost some of that charm. The interior is smaller and less accommodating for passengers, and the exterior features smaller lights and a sloping hood that detract from the car's once eye-catching design. While Nissan claims to have made handling improvements, I have not noticed any significant changes. It seems that the newer model is geared more towards a younger generation, but I believe that the previous Maxima had a timeless appeal that will be missed.

  2. Adam Eichmann 2024-05-05

I have 15,000 miles on my car now. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The car has not started over 12 times and the dash freezes, making the car unresponsive. The dealer advised me to keep a wrench in the car and disconnect the battery when this happens. They also mentioned that Nissan is working on a fix. I called Nissan customer service to follow up, but they have no record of the dealer calling. Additionally, the volume knob, nav, and radio have all had some issues, and the passenger seat is completely loose. The car is also quite loud on the highway with the windows up. I am disappointed that Nissan does not stand behind their products. I have requested to swap out the car for something else, but unfortunately, both the dealer and Corp will not talk to me until 12 months into the lease.

  3. Doug Botsford 2024-03-14

We had a great experience with our 2013 Maxima SV Premium Tech Package for 5,000 miles, until it unfortunately broke down in a remote location due to a timing chain issue. Thankfully, the dealership has been very helpful and is currently installing a brand new engine. Despite the unexpected setback, we appreciate that the dealership offered us a fair price of 28K for the car, which we had purchased for 35K just 3 months ago.

  4. Tyreek Ruecker 2024-01-19

The Maxima is a beautiful and spacious car that is easy to drive in the city. However, some customers have reported issues with condensation in the side mirror lights, which Nissan claims is normal. Additionally, some drivers have experienced handling issues and wind noise on the highway. While syncing an iPod can be frustrating at times, the Maxima is still a great choice for those in the market for a new car. If you are considering a Maxima, it may also be worth checking out the Acura TSX/TL, Honda Accord, Lexus ES, Toyota Camry/Avalon.

Positive 2013 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Jaiden Blanda 2024-11-02

I bought my Nissan SV Premium with Tech Package brand new in early 2012. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase as I haven't had any major problems. Although it was quite expensive for a Nissan, I paid around $35k, I'm glad I decided to go for it. I would have regretted not getting the tech package, so I'm really happy I did.

  2. Ulices Hintz 2024-10-26

I purchased my car in April and have already driven 10,000 miles. Overall, I am very happy with it. Although, I must admit, I wasn't too thrilled two weeks after purchasing it. However, time and the service department have healed all wounds. Unfortunately, within a week of purchase, the steering wheel controls stopped working. We initially thought it was a fuse issue, but it turned out to be a problem with the cable system. Since the replacement, it has worked perfectly fine. Two weeks after taking possession, I had an issue with the car shutting off. It went into On mode and drained the battery. I had to make another 25-mile trip to the dealer, only to be lectured on how to turn the car on/off properly. This is our 3rd Nissan, so we know how to turn it off. It has shot into the On mode since, but we are careful to watch for it.

  3. Brandt Emard 2024-09-23

Your 2013 Maxima SV sounds like a fantastic car! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it. From the trips you've taken to Georgia to the day-to-day driving, it seems like it's been a reliable and enjoyable ride. With its sleek appearance, decent fuel efficiency, and impressive speed, it's no wonder you're still happy with it after two years. Regular maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations are important, but it's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any issues or problems with it. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Colin Kozey 2024-09-19

I purchased my 2012 SV Maxima back in June with 42,000 miles on it. It now has 51,000 miles on it. I found the car for sale on a used car lot and asked the sales manager for the fastest car he had. He gave me the key to my Maxima and after I drove it, I was blown away by the power of this car. It's a great car, but I've heard that there have been some transmission problems and my warranty has expired. I'm not sure what to do with the car.

  5. Madisen Sanford 2024-09-07

Have had the 2013 Maxima SV with premium package for 3 months and Love it. Was coming out a 2002 Acura RL sedan & did a lot of research on imported 4 door sedans in the $35K - $45K range - Maxima SV won hands down against all competitors. Great ride, strong engine, CVT transmission with shift multiple options responsive handling, strong brakes, attractive body style very nice interior with Bose stereo. Local dealers were aggressive in their pricing too - all around I an quite happy with the Nissan Maxima SV Premium car - you won't be disappointed.
