2018 Nissan Maxima problems
The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.
The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.
For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.
Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Inappropriate function of the AEB system. Filed a prior complaint with you a couple of months ago about the cruise control sensor and the AEB. Cruise was fixed, but AEB keeps going off while using cruise inappropriately. Did not get fixed. Spent a lot of time working with Nissan consumer affairs and Vision Nissan in Webster NY and problem not found. There are numerous complaints on line about the same problem, but Nissan consumer affairs (NCA) keeps telling me there are no other complaints about this issue. The NCA told me that unless the service department has the AEB go off while they are trying it out, they won't do anything. If I want the second opinion they are recommending, it has to be out of pocket cost for me. I have had it happen and drove to the dealer without turning the vehicle off, and they didn't pull any codes, so won't address it. I have asked to speak to a manager/supervisor at NCA, but they refuse to let me talk to anyone. This has happened no less than 100 times and is very dangerous.

- Summary: I purchased this vehicle used a couple of months ago. The automatic emergency braking initiates inappropriately while using ICC, it brakes without obstruction. Also, the distance sensor isn't working properly according to the dealer. When I use ICC, and sometimes when I am not using it, I get an "unavailable, front radar obstruction" message. The ICC stops working when this happens. It happens every single time I drive. The dealer I bought it from (not a Nissan dealer) won't address it. The Nissan dealer I had to pay $160 to diagnose it said it has a faulty Distance Sensor, which will be repaired if I pay over $1000. I only have $13,000 miles on this vehicle, and it was 11,000 when I bought it. 2018 Nissan Maxima recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2018 Nissan Maxima.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Park Out Side: 1
- Park Out Side: 1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
- Consequence: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

This is a great car!

The Maxima's interior is on par with a luxury car. Sleek design details like the dash and interior lighting are what you would find on a BMW. Charging ports in the backseat are a game changer according to my teenage son. I am very happy with this car, and although I consider car shopping a brutal task, the Maxima made it a lot easier.

I recently purchased a 2017 Maxima S in Virginia Beach, but unfortunately, the driver's seat began to squeak just two weeks later. The spring in the back area was making a lot of noise, which was quite annoying. Despite having it serviced at the dealer, I was informed that they could not do anything about it due to safety concerns. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved. It seems that this may be a design flaw, as another new car at the dealership was also making the same squeaky noise. I left feeling frustrated that no resolution was offered, but I remain hopeful that a solution can be found. I would advise those considering purchasing a Maxima to be aware of this issue, but I still believe it is a great car overall.

Beautiful to look at. Catches the eye. The power with just a touch of the pedal is impressive. The interior is comfortable and inviting. It looks like a boss. I'm not a fan of having to pay an extra 40 cents for premium gas.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that your car is absolutely amazing!

If you're considering a Maxima, you may want to test drive an Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, or BMW as well. As a professional driver, I have found that the Maxima's roadholding is not up to par, especially on wet roads, and it struggles in the snow even with 4 snow tires. While the engine is impressive, the chassis can't handle the power, and the CVT transmission leaves much to be desired. Additionally, torque steer can be an issue when passing quickly on narrow roads. On the bright side, the front seats are exceptional, especially the fully adjustable driver's seat. However, the front passenger seat lacks a height adjustment. It's disappointing that a $40,000 car doesn't have a power seat that raises. The interior is spacious and high quality, but the exterior styling is quite unusual. Nissan may want to consider hiring new engineers and stylists. The paint work and finish could also use some improvement. Overall, I wish Nissan the best of luck, but I personally won't be purchasing another Maxima.

Nissan bought this car back in accordance with the lemon law. Although the design is fantastic and there are many selling points, my experience with it has been disappointing. The engine is fine, but it has too much power for the front wheels, which becomes evident when passing someone and fighting to stay in the lane. The seats are adequate, but I have sat in better ones for a similar price point. The electronics have been a bit of a letdown as well. The radio system has shut off three times for no reason, requiring me to pull over and restart the car to reboot the system. The included apps are not very functional, and the key fob sometimes fails to recognize the key. The rear deck buzzes with loud music, and the front end collision system can be a bit scary. Overall, I have had some issues with this car, but I hope that Nissan can improve these problems in the future.I have the extended warranty up to 120000 miles, so I'll be keeping this car for a while. I might as well make the most of it and visit the dealer frequently. Who knows, they might even lemon law me out of it. As for why Britney Spears? Well, it may look good from the outside, but it's not something you'd want to take home.

My wife absolutely adores this car! She loves the body style and overall performance. However, during a recent road trip on interstate 80 in Nebraska, we encountered some snow and patches of ice. Unfortunately, each time we hit a patch of ice, the car seemed to want to bring the rear-end forward. We were the slowest car on the road and had no clue as to why this was happening. Although tire pressures were sufficient, the wind was trailing, and we were carrying ample weight, we still experienced this issue. After speaking with a service manager and hearing of no probable causes, we have since learned of other customers with similar experiences. Therefore, I would suggest that anyone considering buying this model or an Altima should look into this problem. Despite this issue, we still love the car and will continue to enjoy it.
Cristopher Ebert 2024-10-27
This car has a choppy ride, even though I have the platinum model. I can feel every crack in the road, which makes it uncomfortable to drive around town. In comparison, my wife's Subaru Forester provides a much smoother and more comfortable ride. While the engine and looks of this car are great, I would not recommend it if you prioritize a smooth and comfortable ride. This is just my personal opinion, though.
Arnold Murazik 2024-04-29
Looking for a car that had some space, I found that the trunk was small and the front seats were comfy but felt a bit confined. However, the ride was nice and I ultimately decided to purchase an Impala, which has a huge trunk and more cabin space. I noticed in your review that the breakdown in each category only registered as either 'great' or 'poor', with no option for 'okay'. It's important to accurately reflect the customer's viewpoint, so please consider updating the survey to include this option. Thank you!
