The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 1991 Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima, produced in 1991, is known for a few common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses, transmission malfunction and failure, ignition coil failure, and power steering pump leaks.

Leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses are a common problem in the Nissan Maxima, particularly at the crimped connection. This issue can lead to a loss of coolant and reduced cooling efficiency, resulting in a less comfortable driving experience. The low pressure can also cause the system to work harder, potentially leading to further damage and more costly repairs.

Transmission malfunction and failure are another common issue in the 1991 Nissan Maxima. This can manifest as jerking when shifting, a common problem in the 2004 model year. Transmission issues can lead to a loss of power, reduced fuel efficiency, and even the inability to drive the vehicle. These problems can be costly to repair, with average costs ranging from $2,500 to $3,500, depending on the severity of the issue.

Ignition coil failure is a common problem in older Nissan Maxima models, including the 1991 model. This issue can cause the check engine light to turn on and can lead to sparks that damage other coils. The faulty coil can cause feedback through the wiring harness, potentially leading to further damage. This issue typically occurs around 130,000 miles, but some owners have reported experiencing it as early as 49,000 miles. Replacing the ignition coil can cost between $500 and $660, depending on labor and component pricing.

Power steering pump leaks are a common problem in the 1991 Nissan Maxima, particularly in models produced between 1995 and 2001. This issue can cause noisy and unstable steering, as well as damage to the lower control arm bushing. In extreme cases, this issue can affect overall vehicle control. The leaking fluid can drip on the lower control arm bushing, causing deterioration and failure. This issue typically occurs around 120,000 miles and can be expensive to repair, with average costs ranging from $400 to $1000.

In addition to these common problems, the 1991 Nissan Maxima has also been known to experience electrical issues. These issues can be costly to repair, with average costs ranging from $700 to $1,100, depending on the severity of the issue. The most common electrical problems in the Nissan Maxima occur at around 96,000 miles and can cost up to $900 to fix.

In conclusion, the 1991 Nissan Maxima is a reliable vehicle, but it is prone to a few common problems. These issues include leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses, transmission malfunction and failure, ignition coil failure, and power steering pump leaks. Owners of the 1991 Nissan Maxima should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them as soon as possible to prevent further damage and more costly repairs.

Negative 1991 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Rodrigo Cassin 2025-01-15

As soon as it hit 100K, I needed to replace the normal time belt, water pump, and cv boots. At about 106K, I had to replace the rear brakes and speedometer chip, which was pretty expensive. However, I am about to sell the car and didn't expect so many problems. Despite these issues, it is still a great car with excellent pick up, making it perfect for expressway and highway travel. The only downside is that it is a bit too light. Overall, I would give it an A+.

Positive 1991 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Jesse Dickens 2025-01-27

Hi there! I've owned this vehicle for over a decade and I can definitely say it's a reliable one. The engine is still remarkably strong even though it's coming up on its 14th birthday. There are a few common problems to look out for, such as broken manifold studs (which can be fixed for around $300-$400 if done right) and tricky shifter solenoid/bushing, but they're easy to fix. The LCD clock can be a bit unreliable, but you can easily find refurbished ones on eBay for between $10-$20.

  2. Everett Cummerata 2025-01-08

My husband and I purchased my 5-speed 91 Maxima SE in '96 when it already had around 100k miles on it. We paid $7000 for it, and every cent was worth it! I still own the car, and although the speedometer stopped working and I was upset with my husband when the replacement showed fewer miles (and doesn't keep up correctly), we have lived on a dirt road for 7 of the years we've owned it. I was told 7 years ago that the rear seal leaks, but I still haven't replaced it, and there are still no puddles in my driveway. It doesn't burn oil, and I can guarantee it has well over 320k miles. This car rocks! The only repairs we've had to make were for worn-out parts and hitting a deer at 80mph. Parts are hard to find these days, and no one wants to sell, including me. The car can still easily do over 115+ mph. I love it!

  3. Wilhelm Herman 2024-11-26

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Maxima. I bought it for $1,500.00 back in September of 2003 when it had 96,000 miles on it. I have to say, the Maxima's V6 engine is one of the best engines ever made! Even though my car is 14 years old, it still performs excellently and handles really well. If Nissan were still making this body style, I would definitely purchase it brand new today. However, I do have to say that the 2004 Maxima doesn't quite have the same reliability as the 1989-1994 body style. There are many more computerized parts that can malfunction in the newer models. When my current vehicle finally dies, I'll definitely be on the lookout for a 1994 model. Thanks for listening!

  4. Toby Effertz 2024-11-12

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my GXE. I bought it at 118k and it's still running great! It's fast off the line and comfortable at highway speeds. I did have to replace the CV joints, front brakes, and timing belt at 123k, but that's to be expected with any car. The engine can get a bit loud at times, but that's nothing the Bose stereo can't handle, right? Overall, I think this is a fantastic starter car for any teenager out there. It's fast, reliable, and a lot of fun to drive!

  5. Jadon O'Hara 2024-11-09

Definitely the best car I've had! It ran great until I sold it with 187K miles. I only had to replace the alternator and brake pads once. I then bought a 1998 V6 Accord, but the Maxima was more comfortable and seemed to accelerate better, even though the gas mileage wasn't so great. The internal features were also better in the Maxima.
