2002 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 2002 Nissan Maxima problems

Based on the information provided in the search results, here are some common problems reported by owners of the 2002 Nissan Maxima:

  • Check Engine Light for Faulty Gas Cap: The Check Engine Light can illuminate due to a faulty gas cap, and dealerships may charge high prices for the repair.
  • Oil Consumption: Some owners have reported excessive oil consumption, needing to add about a pint every 2,000 miles. This issue may be attributed to common oil leaks through the upper oil pan half moon seals and the spark plug tube seals on the valve covers.
  • Engine Problems: Owners have experienced various engine issues, such as the car wanting to shut off, running hot, rough idle, and white smoke coming from the exhaust. These symptoms could indicate serious problems like a blown head gasket, faulty computer, and the need for a new engine after around 122,000 miles of use.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the 2002 Nissan Maxima, ranging from cosmetic concerns like rust to more critical mechanical issues related to oil consumption and engine performance.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-24
  • VIN: JN1DA31D92T
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When I first purchased this car I had immediate problems with the power steering fluid. The check engine light has remained on the entire time. But the car was hemorrhaging fluid, groaning, whining, and my steering was becoming extremely loose. I call the dealer that sold me the car, because I dropped 4 grand on what seemed like a nice vehicle with under 100k on it. Well, I bought the car right off the lot and they refused to repair it. Cool, I respect that. IF the inspection reports and other papers are clearly falsified. It couldn't have passed inspection under normal situations. But since the dealer owns their own shop, they could slap stickers on busted vehicles and send them off to be sold. Eventually they do me " A favor" by replacing the power steering actuator/pump hoses & did work on towards a DTC code P0550. They give me that favor by charging me only for the parts, no labor. Totally cool, if work was done. It still has the same electrical tape in areas that was "fixed". They clear my codes and off I go. Engine light cuts on again and I'm having the same issues. My power steering fluid looks like it's boiling or bubbling as well. Still getting the P0550 code as my main DTC. Except now, I'm having major problems and my car has been sitting for a month. Not sure if the leaky fluid corroded components from before. As of now I'm throwing DTCs for P0171, P0305, P0550 (twice), believe I have a vacuum leak, my exhaust system is damaged internally from the misfire codes and has also broken apart near the rear muffler, among other pending codes. Lastly, I was coming home from work and my car completely loses power and bogs waaaay down. Engine light is flashing and I have no control or power. I limp home, park the car, and haven't drove it since other than for test drives. After countless repairs for the same issues, among new repairs and issues I'm broke. Issues started on 3/24 through 12/21 Not had this car for a year and it's been a constant pain ever since.

  • VIN: JN1DA31D42T
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN SEPT. 2014, MY CAR WAS IN FOR SERVICE AND RECALL NUMBER "03V455000" WAS PERFORMED. THE 2 CAMSHAFT SENSORS AND 1 CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WERE TO ALL BE REPLACED. IN APRIL 2016, MY CAR WAS EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH ALL 3 SENSORS. MY CAR WOULD STOP AT ANY MOMENT (STOPPED OR DRIVING). I'VE BEEN IN MANY INTERSECTIONS OR THE INTERSTATE AND IT'LL DIE ON ME AND TAKE A LONG TIME TO CRANK BACK UP. I HAD TO PAY OVER $120 AT THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE DIAGNOSIS. UPON LOOKING AT MY RECALL PAPERWORK, ONLY THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WAS REPLACED. WHEN BRINGING THAT INFO TO DEALER, THEY CLAIMED IT WAS A KIT THAT INCLUDED ALL 3 SENSORS. EVERY SINGLE INTERNET SEARCH, INCLUDING NISSAN'S OWN PUBLIC PARTS WEBSITE, SAYS THAT PART # 23731-AL60C IS A SINGLE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR AND COULD NOT PROVE THAT THEIR INTERNAL/PRIVATE PARTS SYSTEM CLAIMED IT WAS A KIT. I THEM REACHED OUT TO THE NISSAN RECALL NUMBER (1-800-647-7261) LISTED ON THE RECALL TO EXPLAIN THE ISSUE WITH ALL THE SENSORS NOT BEING REPLACED. AFTER A FEW CALLS, MY INFO WAS ROUTED TO A REGIONAL ASSOCIATE. I ASKED HER IF SHE NEEDED TO EXPLAIN THE STORY TO HER AND SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T. AFTER 5 DAYS, THE REGIONAL ASSOCIATE CALLED ME BACK AND EXPLAINED TO ME THAT SHE REACHED OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SAID THAT NISSAN IS AGREEING WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND CANNOT ASSIST ME ANY FURTHER. SHE COULD SEE THE WORK INFORMATION, BUT SEEMED SIMPLY SIDED WITH THE DEALERSHIP WITHOUT ANY FURTHER INFO OR QUESTIONING ME FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING.

2002 Nissan Maxima recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2002 Nissan Maxima.

2022-08-09
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS

Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

Negative 2002 Nissan Maxima car reviews

I bought this car back in 2006 with only 49k miles on it. Now, with just 67k miles, I have mixed feelings about it. While it does have some great features like a heated steering wheel and seats, there are also some downsides that make me regret my purchase. For example, the turning radius is quite poor, the torque steer is terrible, and the transmission is almost gone. Additionally, the front struts are in bad shape and will cost at least $1000 to fix. Lastly, the wind noise is quite loud and worse than my 90 Camry. Overall, I would not recommend buying this car.

I purchased an 02 Maxima automatic with 45,000 miles almost 3 years ago. It currently has 70,000 miles and unfortunately, it burns oil, using one to two quarts between changes every 4,000 miles. I also own an 03 Altima V6 which has the same issue, leading me to believe that this is a common problem. However, these cars are cheap to buy used and a quart or two of oil between changes costs less than $10, so it's not worth putting in new rings. I made the mistake of running regular gas for the first 2 1/2 years, but I have since learned that the drivetrain, including the transmission, works better with premium. The solid rear axle in this car makes for inferior handling compared to the Altima, but the latter lacks the charm of the older Maxima in my opinion.

What a great car for the money! It comes with lots of features, plenty of room, and is both fast and comfortable. It's also incredibly reliable, and after driving it for 50K miles over the past 2 years, I haven't had to do any maintenance on it. I would definitely buy it again. However, it's worth noting that Nissan had some issues in the early 2000s, and there are a few signs of cost-cutting in this model. For example, the leather feels a bit like vinyl, and there is some wind noise around the rear windows (although this has been addressed in a TSB). Additionally, the rear headrests aren't adjustable, and the trunk hinges are a bit intrusive. The limited-slip differential is only optional (and my car doesn't have it), but that's really the only downside. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

Hi there! When I traded my 2000 Acura TL for the Maxima, it had about 25K miles. I drive about 30K per year and was looking for something that had a lot of power with a manual transmission that also got decent gas mileage. Roominess was also important to me since I have a family. I'm happy to say that I got exactly what I was looking for, and the car now has about 140K miles. The Maxima is the perfect commuter for my needs. The V6 is absolutely amazing! I think it may be the best motor in any car I've ever driven. Torque is plentiful and available everywhere in the rev range. The 6 speed is not the slickest, but it keeps you involved, even though you do not have to work very hard shifting because of all of the torque. Overall, I think this is a great Q-ship. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car brand new and have not had any problems out of the ordinary. I still have the original clutch and struts (although the ride is not the same, it is still fine), and it only needs a quart of oil between changes. The OEM stereo died a few years ago, but I purchased a new one from Crutchfield and upgraded it myself. I absolutely love this car and plan on driving it for 300K miles or more! This is actually my 4th Maxima.

  3. Kenny Torphy 2024-11-23

This car is fantastic! Mechanically, it is unbeatable compared to any other car. Although, there is a re-occurring issue with the Bose 6 CD in-dash CD Stereo where one side stops working when using the CD player. However, the other modes still produce great sound. Some cars may experience the heater/AC blower motor going out around 100,000 miles, but it is an easy fix. The car maneuvers great and has impressive power for its time. The gas mileage is good, but since I have a 6-speed manual, I tend to drive a little faster and quicker (maybe a bit too much!) which results in a slightly lower gas mileage of about 18-19 mpg in the city.

This car is great! It has more horsepower than most V8's and for the price, there isn't a better car. I've driven the TL and the ES300, and this car performs better than both. It's a lot of bang for your buck!

  5. Rex Rodriguez 2024-10-12

Bought as certified used with 22K miles, now have 122K miles and this car is still awesome! I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major problems at all with this car. I plan to drive it well past 200K miles.
