1995 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 1995 Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima, particularly the 1995 model, has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from transmission malfunctions to electrical problems.

One of the most frequently reported problems is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hose, which can be found at the crimped connection. This issue can lead to a low-pressure air conditioning system, affecting the car's cooling performance.

Another problem that affects the 1995 Nissan Maxima is ignition coil failure. This issue is common in older models, including the 1995-2002, 2004, 2007, and 2009 models. The ignition coil failure can also trigger the check engine light, and if left unchecked, it can cause sparks that send feedback through the wiring harness, damaging other coils.

The 1995-2001 Nissan Maxima models are also known for power steering pump leaks, which can be difficult to diagnose. The most common symptoms include noisy and unstable steering caused by power steering pump leaks. The leaking fluid would drip on the lower control arm bushing, causing deterioration and failure. Overall vehicle control may be affected in extreme cases, so it’s best to get your car checked by a mechanic as soon as possible. This issue usually occurs around 120,000 miles, and the total repair cost may vary but is known to be on the expensive side, averaging from $400 to around $1000.

The 2004 Nissan Maxima is the worst model year, with the most overall complaints, particularly with the transmission.

In addition to these problems, the 1995 Nissan Maxima has also been reported to have electrical problems, including excessive voltage drop and blown alternator fuses caused by an intermittent partial short somewhere on the alternator/battery.

In summary, the Nissan Maxima, particularly the 1995 model, has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include leaking and low-pressure air conditioning hoses, ignition coil failure, power steering pump leaks, transmission malfunctions, and electrical problems. It is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-11-05
  • VIN: 4N2DN11W2SD
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1995 NISSAN QUEST VEHICLE THAT HAD A SAFETY RECALL FOR A CRACKED FUEL TANK VENT HOSE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A FIRE. THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED IN JUNE 2001 WITH THE RECALL NOTICE STATING THAT THE HOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO PREVENT THE HOSE FROM CRACKING AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK. ON NOV. 5TH 2004, MY VEHICLE FAILED IT'S ANNUAL STATE EMISSIONS TEST, WITH THE REPORT SAYING THAT I HAD A FUEL SYSTEM LEAK. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP DISCOVERED THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE CRACKED AND LEAKING AND CHARGED ME $170 TO REPLACE IT. I PROTESTED THE CHARGE BECAUSE THE RECALL WORK WAS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. THIS SAFETY RECALL IS NOT EFFECTIVE. NISSAN TOLD ME THAT THE RECALL WORK IS ONLY WARRANTED FOR 1 YEAR. MY CONTENTION IS THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS FROM HAPPENING AND THE LATEST WORK SHOULD BE COVERED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR NISSAN WOULD AGREE TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE EXPENSE. SINCE THE HOSE SHOULD NOT HAVE CRACKED AGAIN, I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE EXPENSE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE RECALL WORK WAS NOT EFFECTIVE.*AK

I HAVE 2 1995 MAXIMA'S AND THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. HAVING DONE QUITE A BIT OF RESEARCH LOOKING FOR CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS, IT LOOKS AS THOUGH EVERYONE ELSE WITH A 95 MAXIMA HAS THE SAME DEFECTS. THE SPRING PROBLEM WITH THE SUSPENSION DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AS WAS THE SPRING PROBLEM WITH THE SENTRA. I HAVE DOCUMENTED EVERY COMPLAIN THAT I COULD FIND AND IF MY DAUGHTER OR MYSELF HAS AN ACCIDENT IN THESE NISSAN'S, SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY WILL BE RICH! I DO NOT HAVE $1600 TO REPLACE THEM. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT $1000,S OF DOLLAR REPLACING STARTER, BRAKES, ROTORS, KNOCK SENSORS, BATTERIES AMONGST OTHER THINGS AND I'VE ONLY HAD THE CARS SINCE MARCH OF THIS YEAR. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1996-04-15
  • VIN: JN1CA21D7ST
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A NEW 1995 NISSAN MAXIMA IN JULY 1995. BY APRIL 1996, THE STILL-NEW CAR HAD TO BE REPAIRED WITH A NEW O2 SENSOR, BUT UNDER THE WARRANTY. THEN BY OCTOBER 2000, ANOTHER NEW O2 SENSOR HAD TO BE INSTALLED, AND WAS PAID OUT OF OUR OWN POCKET. HOWEVER, BY FEBRUARY 2002, THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE CAR WITH YET ANOTHER O2 SENSOR FAILURE. AT THAT TIME WE REFUSED THE SERVICE BECAUSE WE HAD LOST CONFIDENCE ON THE REPAIR DUE TO PAST POOR QUALITY HISTORY AND HIGH REPAIR COST ESTIMATION (~$250). THE DEALERSHIP NOW ROUTINELY WARNS US TO REPAIR THE SENSOR, BUT REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE THE SENSOR QUALITY AND/OR VEHICLE ENGINE OPERATION THAT, IN MY OPINION, WAS THE CAUSE OF THE REPEATED REPAIRS.*AK

SUSPENSION,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-06-15
  • VIN: JN1CA2107ST
  • Components: SUSPENSION,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A 1995 NISSAN MAXIMA GLE IN 1997 FROM PERUZZI NISSAN IN FAIRLESS HILLS, PA. FOR AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO ABOUT EIGHT (8) PERCENT OF THE FINAL SALE PRICE, WE ALSO PURCHASED AN 84-MONTH OR 100,000 MILE NISSAN SECURITY+PLUS VEHICAL PROTECTION PLAN. AT AROUND 48 MONTHS AND WITH LESS THAN 80,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, WE WERE INFORMED THE PLAN HAD EXPIRED. IT TURNS OUT THAT NISSAN'S PLAN STARTS ON THE DATE THE VEHICLE FIRST LEFT THE SHOWROOM, A.K.A. THE ORIGINAL IN-SERVICE DATE (WHICH IN OUR CASE WAS JUNE, 1994), NOT THE DATE ON WHICH A CONSUMER BUYS THE SAME CAR AS USED. THE WORDING OF THE CONTRACTS IS MISLEADING AT BEST AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE MARKETING BROCHURES NISSAN DEALERS USE TO SELL THESE VERY PROFITABLE PLANS SAYS THAT COVERAGE STARTS ON THE DATE YOU PURCHASED YOUR CAR. IN EFFECT, OVER ONE THIRD OF THE COVERAGE WE PAID FOR WAS SHAVED OFF FROM THE VERY MOMENT WE PURCHASED THE PLAN. WE SUBSEQUENTLY INCURRED SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS IN REPAIRS THAT WE ARE NOW IN COURT ATTEMPTING TO RECOVER, HAVING WON A FIRST ROUND AND JUDGMENT OF $3,300. CONSUMERS SHOULD BE FOREWARNED ABOUT THESE PLANS, WHICH WE MAINTAIN ARE A SHAM AND, IN AT LEAST SOME STATES (INCLUDING PENNSYLVANIA) CONSTITUTE FRAUD. WE ARE LOOKING TO HEAR FROM OTHER CONSUMERS THAT PURCHASED THIS PARTICULAR PLAN SINCE 1997, FROM PERUZZI NISSAN AS WELL AS OTHER DEALERS.

Positive 1995 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Albert Ward 2024-11-10

This is my 4th Maxima in a row. I buy them at 125,000 (around $6000) and sell them with 225,000 miles (around $1500). I've never had to work on any Maxima motor or transmission! It is the best car for the money, period! I can't afford to drive anything else.

  2. Jimmy Dibbert 2024-11-08

This car is my wife's daily driver and was purchased new for her job, which required her to spend a lot of time in the car. I wanted her to have a powerful and safe vehicle, especially in case of an accident. Now that she is a stay-at-home mom, I am getting her a new car. I was considering a minivan, but she actually wants another Maxima. So, there you have it!

  3. Oswaldo Schmidt 2024-10-20

Great interstate cruising car! After 199,000 miles, you can still get 24 mpg in mixed driving to and from work, and 29+ mpg on trips. The handling is predictable but not sporty. When I bought four new Michelins at 165,000 miles, the ride became so smooth that I decided to keep the car until at least 200,000 miles. This car is definitely worth buying good tires!

  4. Horace Grimes 2024-10-12

It's great to hear about your experience with different car models! From your description, it sounds like the Maxima is a really well-designed sedan that delivers wonderful performance and a perfect balance of handling and ride comfort. The cabin seems like a joy for the driver and a pleasant experience for passengers on long trips. It's impressive that you've had your '95 GLE for so long and still plan to drive it for another 50K. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Mortimer Gerhold 2024-10-07

This car is excellent, with the exception of the rear suspension. The hard hydraulics are comparable to those of an M3, and it is fuel efficient. Additionally, it features a timing chain, so there is no need to worry about maintenance. It is important to invest in high-quality, original parts for your car, as they are more efficient and have a longer lifespan in the long run.
