1993 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues have been reported by owners of the 1993 Nissan Maxima. These problems can manifest as excessive voltage drop, blown alternator fuses, and issues with the speed sensor and knock sensor circuits. These electrical malfunctions can cause various symptoms like stalling while driving, radio and airbag light flickering, trouble starting the car, and sluggish acceleration. Resolving these electrical issues may require a visit to an electrical shop or the dealer, potentially incurring significant costs.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-07-06
  • VIN: JN1EJ01F3PT
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL SYSTEM:FUEL INJECTOR FAILURE. FUEL INJECTORS HAVE FAILED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE RECENT PAST. WAS ADVISED BY NISSAN FACTORY TRAINED MECHANIC AT NISSAN DEALERSHIP THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE WIRING HARNESS AND THAT NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM AND HAS ISSUED A "SECRET" ADVISORY TO THEIR SERVICE PERSONNEL ABOUT THIS POSSIBLY BEING A FIRE HAZARD, BUT HAVE NOT SEEN ANY PUBLIC INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM DEVELOPED AFTER I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A STALLING PROBLEM THAT WAS FINALLY DECIDED TO BE THE ECM MODULE. THE ECM MODULE WAS REPLACED COSTING OVER $1000, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. NISSAN MECHANIC THEN REPLACED A WIRE IN THE WIRING HARNESS, AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS, BUT RETURNED. HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY INDEPENDENT MECHANICS THAT THE FACTORY INSTALLED HARNESS (VE30DE ENGINE) IS TOO CLOSE TO THE REAR EXHAUST MANIFOLD, CAUSING WIRES TO FAIL, AND THAT NISSAN HAS A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM FOR FREE, BUT CAN'T FIND ANY INFORMATION. CAN YOU HELP? *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-11-02
  • VIN: JN1HJ01F7PT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY CAR WAS LOSING POWER. CAR WOULD NOT START AND MY RADIO HASN'T WORKED FOR THE LAST YEAR. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY ALTERNATOR IN MY NISSAN MAXIMA FOR THE THIRD TIME IN APPROXIMATELY 6 YEARS. WHEN I PURCHASED THE LAST ALTERNATOR ON 11/02/05 FROM ADVANCE AUTO PARTS. I RECEIVED A PRINTOUT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL FACTORY SERVICE BULLETINS PRODUCED BY NISSAN TO CORRECT CHARGING SYSTEM PROBLEMS ON MAXIMAS. I'VE CALLED NISSAN AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO TYPE OF RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEMS ARE POOR CONNECTIONS: THE BATTERY WIRE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CARRY ALL THE CURRENT FROM THE ALTERNATOR TO THE BATTERY. THE SYMPTOMS OF THIS INCLUDE ALTERNATOR OVERHEATING, ALTERNATOR FAILURE, AND ELECTRICAL POWER LOSS. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS POOR CHARGE AT IDLE: SOME MAXIMAS DO NOT CHARGE WELL AT IDLE, EVEN THOUGH THE ALTERNATOR IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I BELIEVE THAT NISSAN NEEDS TO PUT THESE VEHICLES ON A RECALL NOTICE. *JB

Negative 1993 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Kayleigh Simonis 2024-10-11

I'm glad to say that Nissan always delivers what is expected. The same things that worked well in the past still work just as well today, and while there may be some recurring issues, they are easily resolved. Personally, I've owned three 90's Nissans - a '92 Sentra, a '92 Pathfinder, and now a '93 Maxima - and I have to say that the 3.0 liter V-6 is the best one ever built. We've only had two minor issues with these cars: the fuel line connection to the injectors came loose, but it was a simple fix for a mechanic, and the window motor cable broke on the Pathfinder. The fit and finish of all the panels, both inside and out, is excellent! I would highly recommend this car as a reliable daily driver or a great school car.

Positive 1993 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Earl Ebert 2025-01-04

I've owned four cars in my life, but this one has been my favorite. The performance is incredible and reliable. I'm so satisfied with it that my next car will also be a used Maxima. The only issues I've had have been with the electrical components. The alternator went bad after 3 years and then again after another 2 years. I also had an electronics problem in the security circuitry that cost a few hundred dollars. The transmission went out after 140,000 miles, which cost $1800 to repair. Additionally, the timing belt must be replaced every 60,000 miles at a cost of about $400. However, when I add up all the non-maintenance costs plus the purchase price of the car, it has only cost me about $200 a month over 8 years ($4,000 plus $16,000 over 100 months) or 10 cents per mile.

  2. Juvenal McKenzie 2025-01-04

You'll love the engine performance and handling of this car, especially on long highway trips. I've owned it for 5 years and it's been a great ride. The transmission did need to be rebuilt at 132,000 miles, but overall it's been a reliable car.

  3. Maurice Mertz 2024-11-21

I love this car! It's amazing how it has four doors and still drives like a sports car!

  4. Glen Welch 2024-10-10

Great car! It's amazing that it has 107,000 miles and no major problems. I see you just changed the front struts and all belts, which is standard stuff. Keep up the good maintenance!

  5. Dameon Moore 2024-10-02

I recently purchased my Maxima just two days ago and I must say, it's a really nice car. I enjoy driving it, but unfortunately, the transmission is not working properly. However, we are taking care of it and I'm confident that it will drive like a dream once it's fixed. The Bose sound system is amazing, although one of the speakers is a bit old and the bass sounds a little off. I plan to order a new speaker from the local Nissan dealership, so that should work out perfectly. Additionally, the display screen on the CD/tape player has gone out, so I'm unable to see what song or station it's on. But, I'm replacing it with a Kenwood CD receiver. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to enjoying my Maxima for years to come!
