1998 Nissan Maxima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Maxima is a car manufactured and marketed by Nissan and offered as Nissan's flagship sedan primarily in North America, the Middle East, South Korea, and China—and currently in its eighth generation. Having debuted for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima, it replaced the earlier Datsun 810. The name Maxima dates to the 1981 model year when Datsun marketed the upscale 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America. Like the 810, early versions of the Maxima had their origins in the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. It is renamed to Nissan Maxima when the Datsun brand was phased out for the 1985 model year.

The Maxima was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Altima and prior to 1993, the Stanza, distinguished by features such as a premium interior and V6 engine. Most Maximas were built in Oppama, Japan, until North American assembly began in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year.

For the US and Canada, Nissan ended production of the Maxima in July 2023.

Outside North America, the Maxima nameplate has also been applied to variants or trim levels of several other models.

Common 1998 Nissan Maxima problems

The Nissan Maxima, particularly the 1998 model, has been reported to have several common problems that may affect its performance and reliability. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues based on owner complaints and car forums:

  • Air Conditioning Hose Leak: A leaking low-pressure air conditioning hose at the crimped connection is a common problem in the Nissan Maxima. This issue can lead to a loss of refrigerant, resulting in reduced cooling efficiency or complete failure of the air conditioning system. The repair typically involves replacing the defective hose and recharging the system with refrigerant.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: Older Nissan Maxima models, including the 1998 version, are known to have ignition coil failure. This problem can cause the check engine light to illuminate and may lead to further damage to other coils due to feedback sparks through the wiring harness. Ignition coil failure typically occurs around 130,000 miles but has been reported in some cases as early as 49,000 miles. Replacing the ignition coil can cost between $500 and $660, depending on labor and component pricing.
  • Power Steering Pump Leak: The 1995-2001 Nissan Maxima, including the 1998 model, is prone to power steering pump leaks. This issue can cause noisy and unstable steering, as well as deterioration and failure of the lower control arm bushing due to leaking fluid dripping on it. In extreme cases, overall vehicle control may be affected. The repair cost for this problem is known to be on the expensive side, averaging between $400 and $1000.
  • Transmission Malfunction and Failure: Transmission problems are a well-documented issue in the Nissan Maxima, particularly in the 2004 model year. However, the 1998 model has also been reported to have transmission issues, including jerks when shifting. These problems can lead to costly repairs, with an average cost to fix ranging from $2,500 to $3,500, depending on the nature and extent of the issue.
  • Faulty Front-Seat Wire Harness: The Nissan Maxima has been reported to have a faulty front-seat wire harness that can cause problems with the seat's electrical components, such as the seat heater or power adjustment functions. This issue can be intermittent or persistent and may require replacement of the affected wire harness.

It's important to note that while these issues are common, not all Nissan Maxima vehicles will experience them. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address potential problems before they become more serious. Additionally, owners are encouraged to check for any recalls that may affect their vehicle and to have them addressed promptly by a dealership or authorized service center.

What is the common problem with Nissan Maxima?

A prevalent concern among Nissan Maxima owners is a leaking and low-pressure air conditioning (AC) hose, often causing the AC to blow warm air. This issue is notably frequent in 2001 and 2004-2012 models, typically surfacing around 87,000 miles.

What year Maxima has bad transmission?

What year did Nissan have transmission problems? Nissan has had various transmission problems over the years with its various models. Some of those that have been known to experience transmission issues include the 2004-2009 Nissan Murano, the 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima, and the 2005-2007 Nissan Pathfinder.

  • Summary: I JUST PURCHASED A 1998 NISSAN MAXIMA, WENT TO CHANGE OUT THE FRONT BUMPER SKIN AND FENDERS AND AS I TOOK OFF THE BUMPER SKIN THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT IS RUSTED BEYOND BELIEF AND ONLY ONE OF THE BOLTS ON THE CROSS MEMBER HOLDING UP THE WHOLE ENGINE/TRANS AND THAT ONE IS RUSTED TOO. THERE IS A BIG HOLE WHERE THE RUST IS AND ITS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY AS WELL AS HANDLING OF THIS CAR. I'M ACTUALLY SURPRISED THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION HAVEN'T FALLEN OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR ALREADY. THIS IS A PAIN TO FIX AND EXPENSIVE, I ALSO HAVE DONE LOTS OF RESEARCH ON THIS AND A WHOLE LOT OF THEM HAVE SAME ISSUE. WHAT CAN/ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS? *JS

  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT NISSAN MAXIMA'S RUSTING AND DETERIORATING RADIATOR SUPPORT (LOWER TIE BAR) THAT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FROM THE MID 90'S THREW TODAY'S CARS. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AND IT SHOULD EXTEND TO ALL CARS STILL BEING DRIVEN TODAY. I HAVE PUT A LOT OF MONEY INTO MY 98 NOT KNOWING OF THIS DEFECT. THE YEAR OF THE CAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEM, SINCE IT IS CONTINUING ON BRAND NEW CARS WITH AS LITTLE AS 50,000 MILES ON THEM. AS A TAX PAYING, CAR BUYER. I BELIEVE IF THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO FIX THESE ISSUES. THEN YOU NEED TO FORCE THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING. *TR

  • VIN: JN1CA21D6WT
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR NISSAN AT 96648 MILES, THERE WAS REMARKABLY LITTLE RUST UNDERNEATH. THE ALTERNATOR WENT OUT ON 10-12-12 AND WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THEY REFUSED TO REPAIR IT AFTER FINDING THAT THE CORE SUPPORT FOR THE MOTOR IS RUSTED AND ROTTED OUT. FURTHER RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED IN THIS MODEL OF CAR FOR MANY YEARS. IF WE HAD KNOWN THAT THIS CAR WAS SO UNSAFE WE WOULD NEVER HAVE PURCHASED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. TOYOTA HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THEIR PICKUP TRUCKS AND THEY WERE BUYING BACK THE TRUCKS FOR LARGE SUMS OF MONEY. WHY ISN'T NISSAN DOING / BEING FORCED TO DO THE SAME? WE EXPECTED ANOTHER 50,000 MILES OUT OF THIS CAR AND NOW IT IS WORTHLESS. THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, THERE HAS TO BE A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. A MAJOR STRUCTURAL COMPONENT SHOULD BE THE LAST THING TO CORRODE. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-21
  • VIN: JN1CA21AXWT
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AFTER RECLINING MY SEAT, THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM WARNING LAMP STARTED TO BLINK AND HAS REMAINED BLINKING EVER SINCE. AFTER DIAGNOSING THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULE IN THE SEAT TO BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I FOUND A NISSAN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN, NTB00-043, APPLYING TO ALL 1998-1999 NISSAN MAXIMA VEHICLES, WHICH STATES THAT THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULES FOR THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONT SEATS ARE TO BE REPLACED WITH NEW UPDATED ONES THAT REPLACE THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULES AND THE SEAT-SUB HARNESS THAT THE MODULES CONNECT TO. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING SAFETY DEFECT IN THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULE'S HARNESS. THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN STATES TO ROUTE THE NEW HARNESS EXACTLY AS THE OLD HARNESS WAS ROUTED, THEREFORE ELIMINATING THE POSSIBILITY OF THE HARNESS ROUTING IN THE SEAT BEING THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN STATES THAT THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULE INSTALLED ORIGINALLY IN THE VEHICLE CONSISTS OF A TWO PIECE HARNESS; THE AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE WITH A SHORT SECTION OF WIRE THAT CONNECTS INTO A SUB HARNESS THAT IS ROUTED THROUGH THE SEAT, WHERE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM CIRCUIT. THE UPDATED SIDE AIRBAG MODULE ELIMINATES THE TWO-PIECE HARNESS SYSTEM, REPAIRING THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM FAULT AND THEREFORE ELIMINATING THE WARNING INDICATOR CONSTANTLY FLASHING. THIS REQUIRES THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULES, WHICH IS VERY COSTLY AND THIS ISSUE CREATES A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE REGARDING THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAIN SYSTEM IF EVER REQUIRED TO BE USED. IN ADDITION, NISSAN DOES NOT OFFER THE SIDE AIRBAG MODULES FOR PURCHASE TO MY EXTENT OF KNOWLEDGE. AFTER CONDUCTING MY OWN RESEARCH ON WEBSITES FOR NISSAN MAXIMA OWNERS, THIS APPEARS TO BE AN EXTREMELY COMMON ISSUE THAT OCCURS ON THE 1998-1999 NISSAN MAXIMA VEHICLES. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-10
  • VIN: JN1CA21A2WM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1998 NISSAN MAXIMA IN 2004 I WENT ON A TRIP HALF WAY DOWN WE STOP AT A BANK, AND WHEN WE GOT BACK IN THE CAR THE AIR BAG LIGHT DID NOT TURN OFF, BUT JUST KEPT BLINKING. UPON RETURNING I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY RESET THE LIGHT AND SAID THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SHOWED A FAULT (OPEN CIRCUIT). I DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX IT AT THIS POINT. THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AFTER A FEW MONTHS BUT I DID NOT TAKE THE CAR IN AGAIN TILL 2008 AND WANTED TO REPLACE THE PART THAT IS WHEN I FOUND OUT FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE SIDE AIRBAGS WITH THIS CERTAIN MODEL. IT WAS A CONNECTION PROBLEM WITH THE CONNECTORS SHE COULD IT A DESIGN PROBLEM. THE SOLUTION WAS THAT THE NEW AIR BAG HAD ONE CONNECTION INSTEAD OF TWO WHICH SOLVED THE PROBLEM. I DID NOT GET IT REPLACE, BECAUSE I FELT THAT IT IS A RECALL ISSUE IF THEY KNEW THAT IT WAS A POOR DESIGN AND I BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE CHANGED OUT AT NO CHARGE ESPECIALLY BEINGING A SAFETY RESTRAINT ISSUE. I ALSO HAD A RECORD THAT CAME WITH THE CAR THAT THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG HAD BEEN REPLACE NOT TO LONG AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE

Negative 1998 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Sheldon Turner 2024-07-01

I have experienced some issues with my car, particularly with the check engine light coming on repeatedly after 80k miles. Despite replacing 4 o2 sensors, including the first one at 50k miles, the check engine light is now on again for p0325. I have spent over $5000 on repairs, including the o2 sensors and other issues. While I have had some challenges, I am confident in my decision to sell the car.

I have a dark green Maxima and I really love it, but it has presented me with some problems. One thing that I have noticed on at least two other Maximas is that the back of the car sways from side to side when I hit a bump, which can be a bit unsettling. I prefer to drive it myself because I am used to how it handles. On a positive note, I added some green lights in the footwell and they look really nice!

My first car was a 98 Maxima GLE, but I wasn't a big fan of it. It had transmission problems every 2 or 3 years. However, my Ford now is the best car I have ever had. I still have that Maxima for some reason, I just can't seem to throw it away!

Positive 1998 Nissan Maxima car reviews

  1. Estevan Beer 2024-11-13

The car has been really reliable. Although there have been some small issues, such as battery replacement under warranty and a front-end squeak that dealers have not been able to fix. When going over speed bumps with both rear wheels, the rear suspension lands with a harsh thud, but if only one wheel goes over the bump, it's fine. The engine is fantastic! After 76000 hard miles (not auto-journalist level of hard though), the clutch is getting close to replacement. I absolutely love my car and have been having trouble finding a potential replacement. Even with more money to spend, I can't seem to find a car that is as fast, fun, and reliable as my $18K Maxima.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely loved my first Maxima so much that I ended up purchasing another one shortly after. And now, I am excited to say that I am in the process of buying my third Maxima! My first purchase was back in 1996, and then I bought another one in 1998. I am truly a loyal fan of this car!

  3. Norwood Lakin 2024-10-08

I have owned this car for three years and have only had to replace the rear bearings, battery, tires, and serpentine belts. It has been very reliable and comfortable, despite being a '98 model. I highly recommend it!

You made a great choice when you bought this car with 55,000 miles in 2004. It's amazing that you've been able to put another 57,000 miles on it since then! This vehicle has proven to be incredibly reliable, with no major mechanical problems to date. It's clear that you take great care of your car, and it's taking great care of you in return. If you're ever in the market for a new car, I would definitely recommend getting the fully loaded model with leather, sunroof, woodgrain, and digital ac. But even without those upgrades, you've got a fantastic car that will serve you well for years to come.
