Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, has been in production since 1996 and has undergone several changes over the years. While it is known for its power and spacious interior, some model years have been plagued with issues that have caused concern for owners.
Engine problems are one of the most significant issues that Ford Expedition owners have reported. Many of the earlier models, such as 2006 and 2004, have experienced engine shutdowns on the open road, right as the engine light turned on. This problem can be both dangerous and expensive for those on the road. Other engine problems include rough engine operation, difficulty changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These issues can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers.
Accessory issues are another common problem with the Ford Expedition. Models such as 2006 and 2005 have experienced interior accessory problems, including air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These problems can be frustrating for drivers, especially those who enjoy the interior features that the Ford Expedition has to offer. These issues can also result in expensive repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Paint trouble is another common complaint among Ford Expedition owners. Users have reported peeling, chipping, and even bubbling of the paint, especially in the 2005 model. These problems can result in the need for costly detailing repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Air suspension failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2000 Ford Expedition. This problem can result in costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting that air suspension repairs can cost up to $1,500.
Rough idling caused by a sticking engine gas recirculation (EGR) sensor is another issue that has been reported in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and result in engine crankcase pressure issues. To fix the problem, the EGR sensor and valve may need to be replaced.
A cracked positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose can also cause issues in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2004. This problem can result in rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. To fix the problem, the PCV hose will need to be replaced with a new one.
In summary, the Ford Expedition has been plagued with several issues over the years, including engine problems, accessory issues, paint trouble, air suspension failure, and issues with the EGR sensor and PCV hose. These problems can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a Ford Expedition.

Ford Expedition 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 1FMJK1MT1LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

- Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Ford Expedition 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

Vehicle year: 2010
We absolutely adore our 2010 Expedition! When we were car shopping, we considered Acadia's and Enclaves, but once I test drove the Expedition, I was smitten! I was so impressed with how it drove, it felt like a car! What I love most is that the third row is spacious enough for adults to sit comfortably, and we have plenty of cargo space. As a mom of three kiddos and two 120 pound dogs, our Expedition is perfect for road trips because everyone has plenty of room! I average about 14.5 mpg in the city and 20-21 mpg on the highway if I'm not driving too aggressively LOL. I believe the Expedition is an excellent family-friendly vehicle that not only keeps your family safe but is also a stylish ride for moms like me who don't want to drive a minivan =)

Still the most comfortable and useful car you've ever had. Although you wish for a little better gas mileage and it is slightly underpowered, overall you still love the car.

Vehicle year: 2014
Your 2001 Expedition was a great vehicle, but the 2011 model is a completely different animal. It's stronger, more powerful, and quieter, and it combines some of the best features of the old Eddie Bauer. We added a K&N air filter, and now the truck has 9,000 miles on it. It gets 15.5 miles per gallon around town, and on a trip from our home in Vegas to Phoenix, it netted an impressive 22 MPG! When towing a trailer, the 6-speed transmission gets you going faster in 1-2-3, and 4th gear is about the same. It seems to like 5th gear for towing, and at 65 MPH, it nets 2,200 RPMs. Overall, the mileage is 10.5, which is 1.5 MPG better than the 2001 truck. Just remember not to tow with SRC engaged, and be cautious in crosswinds.

Vehicle year: 1998
I bought my Expedition in 2004 with 85k miles on the clock to pull my boat. It tows like a champ, by the way. I had never owned a domestic vehicle before (my past vehicles were a Honda, Acura, Nissan, VW (which was crap), and back to Honda), so I wasn't expecting much from this SUV. But oh boy, has my perception changed! This vehicle has been extremely reliable, with only normal wear and tear issues. The heater core went bad around 100k, and there was some corrosion, but otherwise, it's been rock solid. I think I'll ride this thing into the ground, hopefully for at least another 150k miles :)

Vehicle year: 1998
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with vehicles. My first car was a Ford Mustang that I bought in the 70s. After that, I owned a Honda and a Toyota, both of which I put over 200,000 miles on and they're still going strong! However, I did have a bit of trouble with a Ford Ranger that I bought in 1994. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations and I had to get rid of it before the warranty expired. I also had some issues with my 1998 Expedition, which ended up costing me a lot of money. Despite all of this, I still have a soft spot for Ford products. I just need to make sure that I'm getting a reliable vehicle that won't break down unexpectedly. Interestingly enough, my new Toyota is actually built in Indiana! Thanks for listening to my story.

Vehicle year: 2004
Despite some minor issues such as fading plastic cladding on the doors and a ticking sound in the driver's side door that has yet to be resolved, my vehicle has proven to be a reliable and capable machine. It handles well for a large truck, has excellent brakes, and the engine performance from the 5.4 L is outstanding. Additionally, the climate control is good and it performs well in all weather conditions. While some may criticize the accountant-driven engineering, I have found that it is a great winter vehicle and is able to pull a 6500 lb boat with ease. Overall, I am confident in the capabilities of my vehicle and would recommend it to others.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2019 Ford Expedition Max with heavy duty towing option and I wanted to share my experience. Living in Arizona, we needed a vehicle that could tow our 7500 lbs trailer and the 2019 Ford Expedition with ECOBOOST seemed like the perfect fit for our family of 6. The Expedition has plenty of room for the kids and the power is even better than our previous 2013 Expedition, which was exciting. However, I did experience some issues when towing. The transmission and water temperature both reached over 240, which was concerning and not something I had experienced with my previous Expedition. I noticed that the heavy duty towing package included a bigger radiator, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to prevent the overheating. I just wanted to share my experience with others who may be considering the 4th generation Ford Expedition. On a side note, I did have some issues with the tailgate button and shocks in the first year, but overall I'm still happy with my purchase. Thanks for listening!

I used to own a 2004 Expedition (Eddie Bauer) and loved it, but unfortunately, I started having engine problems. I reluctantly traded it in for a 2014 Expedition, but now I wish I could have kept my old one. The materials used in the seats, trim, and carpet of the new one are not as durable as I had hoped. Unfortunately, my seats already have a worn pattern, and the trim around three doors is coming off. Additionally, my rear heat doesn't work. Overall, I am disappointed with these issues. However, the 2014 Expedition drives well, and I still enjoy driving it. I just wish the materials were of better quality.

November 2022: Despite being only 1 1/2 years old and having less than 11,000 miles, my car has experienced some issues. However, I am confident in my ability to handle them. The windshield wiper fluid seems to empty out quickly, but I have been able to get it refilled without any hassle. The check engine light came on and after some investigation, I discovered it was due to a PCM malfunction. I also noticed some corrosion on my intake manifold and the gasket falling out of the driver side door handle. Additionally, there is some paint bubbling and peeling off my rooftop. Although my battery went bad after 1 year, I am grateful that it is still under warranty. While there have been 2 recalls, I am confident that they will be resolved in a timely manner. As a resident of Las Vegas, I always park my car in a garage, which has helped to maintain its quality. Overall, I believe that my Ford car is a great investment, and I am happy with my purchase. December 2022: Although I had some issues with my car's paint, I was able to get it fixed with the help of a service advisor. However, I was disappointed to learn that the manufacturer's warranty is now null and void. Despite this setback, I am confident that I can handle any future issues that may arise. While the body shop I used did not fix the root cause of the paint problem, I am still satisfied with the work they did. Although my roof rail gutters are no longer covered by Ford's bumper to bumper warranty, I am grateful for the help I received. While there were some minor issues with the body shop, I am confident that they will be resolved in a timely manner. Overall, I am happy with my Ford car and would recommend it to others. The car has been experiencing some issues lately, including corrosion on the intake manifold and a windshield wiper fluid leak that cannot be located. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with proper monitoring and maintenance. While I am disappointed with the current situation, I do not believe that it reflects the overall quality of Ford cars. I trust that the service advisor at my dealership will do their best to address these issues. As for the Pre-collision assist feature, I have scheduled a diagnosis in two weeks and am confident that it will be resolved. While I understand the frustration that comes with these issues, I believe that it is important to remain calm and rational. I have faith in the quality of American-made cars and will continue to support them.
