Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, has been in production since 1996 and has undergone several changes over the years. While it is known for its power and spacious interior, some model years have been plagued with issues that have caused concern for owners.

Engine problems are one of the most significant issues that Ford Expedition owners have reported. Many of the earlier models, such as 2006 and 2004, have experienced engine shutdowns on the open road, right as the engine light turned on. This problem can be both dangerous and expensive for those on the road. Other engine problems include rough engine operation, difficulty changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These issues can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers.

Accessory issues are another common problem with the Ford Expedition. Models such as 2006 and 2005 have experienced interior accessory problems, including air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These problems can be frustrating for drivers, especially those who enjoy the interior features that the Ford Expedition has to offer. These issues can also result in expensive repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.

Paint trouble is another common complaint among Ford Expedition owners. Users have reported peeling, chipping, and even bubbling of the paint, especially in the 2005 model. These problems can result in the need for costly detailing repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.

Air suspension failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2000 Ford Expedition. This problem can result in costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting that air suspension repairs can cost up to $1,500.

Rough idling caused by a sticking engine gas recirculation (EGR) sensor is another issue that has been reported in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and result in engine crankcase pressure issues. To fix the problem, the EGR sensor and valve may need to be replaced.

A cracked positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose can also cause issues in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2004. This problem can result in rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. To fix the problem, the PCV hose will need to be replaced with a new one.

In summary, the Ford Expedition has been plagued with several issues over the years, including engine problems, accessory issues, paint trouble, air suspension failure, and issues with the EGR sensor and PCV hose. These problems can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a Ford Expedition.

Ford Expedition 2020
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 1FMJK1MT1LE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

  • Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Also reported is that the flashers and alarm/horn were active when the fire started (same was true for most other vehicles in the lot that did not burn). This vehicle is not a Hybrid or EV, it is a stock gasoline vehicle with no modifications. The vehicle was towed away by Auto-Owners Insurance company. It is unknown if they have done any form of inspection or investigation. This was not reported to the police but the fire department made a call to extinguish the flames at 4:55 am when the water receded enough for them to access the parking lot.

Ford Expedition 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
  • VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

On December 22nd, I purchased a 'gold certified' 2019 Expedition Max with 65k miles on it. The drivetrain is under warranty until 165k miles, so everything seemed great. However, when I moved to the northeast in March, I started experiencing some issues. The engine had a knocking noise at cold start, lasting around 10-15 seconds. After researching on YouTube, I discovered that there was a problem with the VCT phasers. On April 3rd, I took it to a dealer in CT who confirmed the issue and told me that they would fix it under warranty. A week later, I received a text saying that my vehicle was ready to pick up. However, when I turned on the engine, there was a rattling noise that wouldn't go away. It sounded like rockers. I decided not to pick up the vehicle and informed the dealer of the situation. I even took videos of the truck idling to show them. The dealer then told me that I also had a low oil pressure issue, and that the parts were backordered, so I would have to wait 2-3 months. They also stated that my truck shouldn't be driven and didn't offer a loaner car. I had to tow my truck to another dealer that was over 30 miles away. Thankfully, they gave me a Bronco as a loaner car, although it wasn't even close to my truck! This dealer stated that there was no 'low oil pressure' issue, and that the first dealer didn't change all the necessary parts, which was the reason my engine failed. It's now been over 6 weeks, and the parts are still backordered. Calling Ford representatives has been a waste of time. I should have just continued to drive my old Toyota! This will be my last Ford! Update: The problem was finally solved after 17 weeks, but now there are new problems.

Although the Expedition has comfortable seats, I have found its road performance to be disappointing. It tends to sway heavily when carrying a heavy load, whether on mountain roads or highways. Additionally, the gas mileage is much worse than predicted, even when not carrying a heavy load. In comparison, my old caravan was able to fit more college furniture and dorm room items. However, I believe that with some improvements, the Expedition has the potential to be a reliable vehicle for transporting college students.

I purchased this car used and have only driven it for 6000 miles in the year that I have owned it. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew and there was also a hole in the radiator. Although I had purchased an extended warranty, it only covered the head gasket. As someone who primarily uses the car to transport children, I was disappointed by the lack of reliability with only 60,000 miles on it. However, I remain confident in my decision to not purchase a Ford again.

In 2011, we purchased our 2008 limited Expedition with 36,000 miles. Although we have experienced some issues with the vehicle, we have been impressed with the level of service provided by our dealer and Ford. When the first engine blew up at 40,000 miles, they replaced it free of cost with a rebuilt engine that came with a 100,000 mile warranty. While we are unsure of the exact mileage on the rebuilt engine, we have put 47,000 miles on it without any major issues until recently. We have had to replace coils, plugs, and fuel filters, but this was expected maintenance. Unfortunately, we are now experiencing issues with the sensors on the engine, which is not covered under the warranty. Despite these issues, we have always been loyal to Ford and have taken great care of our Expedition. We are disappointed with the problems we have encountered, but we understand that every vehicle can have its issues. We hope that Ford will continue to improve their products and address the common engine problems that have been reported by many customers.I cannot recommend this vehicle to others. If I had to make the decision again, I would avoid it.

My 2017 vehicle, with under 60k miles and always serviced at the dealer, experienced a complete brake failure resulting in a crash. Despite this, I am confident in stating that Ford is responsible for this issue. It is unacceptable that they refuse to acknowledge the problem. I had to pay to have the brake booster replaced, which is a very dangerous situation that should not have occurred.

When it comes to purchasing a vehicle, there are always trade-offs to consider. The Expedition El is a large vehicle, weighing over 6000 lbs, which comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, it can comfortably seat 8 passengers and still have room for luggage, has a truck frame, substantial towing capacity, and can carry stacks of 4x8 sheets completely in the interior. However, it's important to note that a vehicle of this size will not have the same gas mileage as a Prius, and parking in tight quarters can be a challenge. Ultimately, the decision to purchase a vehicle like this comes down to what parameters are most important to you. We have personally owned three Expeditions, including the 2011 King Ranch EL, and have had great experiences with them. Our earlier 2005 model was passed down to our daughter, and our 2007 model was sold to our son after he fell in love with it. The 2011 model was purchased from AutoNation Katy in Texas and driven back to California, where we have been getting around 20.1 mpg. Overall, we love the size of the vehicle and the comfortable ride it provides on the Bay Area's pot-holed freeways. While the gas mileage isn't the best, it's not too bad either. It's important to keep in mind that every vehicle has its pros and cons, and it's up to the individual to decide what works best for them. It's a 6000+ lb vehicle with plenty of low rpm torque in the engine. If you abuse the gas pedal, your gas mileage will suffer. The 6-speed transmission has been very smooth, and at 65 mph, it's only at 1700 rpm. Additionally, it's really quiet. The interior is roomy and comfortable, with more leg room and comfortable 3rd row seats than a Chevy Suburban / GMC Yukon XL. We rented a 2017 GMC Yukon XL in Hawaii to accommodate 6 adults + 1 toddler, and neither son nor son-in-law (6'+) wanted to sit in the third row. Not an issue in the 2011 KR EL Expy. It also has plenty of towing capacity and handles a 6 x 12 utility trailer like it's not even there. The 4WD comes in handy when you unexpectedly need it, like when picking up 15 cubic yards of soil from a neighbor's muddy & slippery field. For such a large vehicle, visibility is really excellent, due in part to the large windows. The GMC Yukon XL with its narrower windows comes in a poor second in visibility. However, there are some things that are less positive. The interior of the 2011 looks dated and is plasticky. The location of the button to close the rear hatch is poor, as it's on the inside of the rear compartment. GMCs have their button located on the rear hatch and is more convenient. The interior overhead lights are too dim, and there are no lights for the third row. In summary, we've enjoyed our three Expeditions as they've filled needs we considered important. The King Ranch interior is really nice with better leather quality than in our earlier Eddie Bauers. We also have the 2nd row Captains Chairs which ease getting into the third row. If there's someone who wants a lot of leg room, place him or her in the third row, middle seat. With no 2nd row seat in the middle, that individual can stretch out with almost 48

    Vehicle year: 2009

I purchased this car back in 2015 with 82000 miles on it. The EL model is incredibly spacious and comfortable, especially with the leather seats. Despite its size, the mileage is quite reasonable, averaging a solid 11-12 mpg in stop-and-go traffic and up to 18-20 mpg on the highway. The mixed driving conditions give a solid 14-15 mpg, depending on the situation. In comparison, my 2014 Durango (which was too small and had weird shifting) only managed a slightly better 14-15 mpg in traffic and low 20s on the road. We were so impressed with the 09 Expedition that we traded in the Durango for a used 2015 Expedition, which is also fantastic. Although the turbo affects the mileage slightly, it still performs well. I currently have 93000 miles on my 2009 Expedition, and I expect it to last until at least 150,000 miles. You can get a great deal on a used one, so let someone else take the hit on the first few years of depreciation.

  3. Maximus Ziemann 2025-07-12

    Vehicle year: 2013

Your 2001 Expedition was a great vehicle, but the 2011 model is a completely different animal. It's stronger, more powerful, and quieter, and it combines some of the best features of the old Eddie Bauer. We added a K&N air filter, and now the truck has 9,000 miles on it. It gets 15.5 miles per gallon around town, and on a trip from our home in Vegas to Phoenix, it netted an impressive 22 MPG! When towing a trailer, the 6-speed transmission gets you going faster in 1-2-3, and 4th gear is about the same. It seems to like 5th gear for towing, and at 65 MPH, it nets 2,200 RPMs. Overall, the mileage is 10.5, which is 1.5 MPG better than the 2001 truck. Just remember not to tow with SRC engaged, and be cautious in crosswinds.

This is definitely the best all-around vehicle I have ever owned. The visibility is great, the turning radius is unbelievable (it sure beats our Olds 98 and Buick LeSabre), and the air-adjusted lumbar support in the seat works great. It's a joy to drive on long trips.

We traded in my beautiful black Z71 pickup for this great big white Ex. At first, we weren't sure if we made the right choice, but we soon realized that we couldn't have made a better one. Now, I'm a die-hard Ford man. The vehicle pulls anything and everything you need to with no effort down the road. While the gas mileage could be better, you have to sacrifice a little for the power. The four-wheel drive has never failed me, and I've never had to do anything besides the regular scheduled tune-ups (125,000 miles).
