Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, has been in production since 1996 and has undergone several changes over the years. While it is known for its power and spacious interior, some model years have been plagued with issues that have caused concern for owners.
Engine problems are one of the most significant issues that Ford Expedition owners have reported. Many of the earlier models, such as 2006 and 2004, have experienced engine shutdowns on the open road, right as the engine light turned on. This problem can be both dangerous and expensive for those on the road. Other engine problems include rough engine operation, difficulty changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These issues can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers.
Accessory issues are another common problem with the Ford Expedition. Models such as 2006 and 2005 have experienced interior accessory problems, including air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These problems can be frustrating for drivers, especially those who enjoy the interior features that the Ford Expedition has to offer. These issues can also result in expensive repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Paint trouble is another common complaint among Ford Expedition owners. Users have reported peeling, chipping, and even bubbling of the paint, especially in the 2005 model. These problems can result in the need for costly detailing repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Air suspension failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2000 Ford Expedition. This problem can result in costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting that air suspension repairs can cost up to $1,500.
Rough idling caused by a sticking engine gas recirculation (EGR) sensor is another issue that has been reported in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and result in engine crankcase pressure issues. To fix the problem, the EGR sensor and valve may need to be replaced.
A cracked positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose can also cause issues in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2004. This problem can result in rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. To fix the problem, the PCV hose will need to be replaced with a new one.
In summary, the Ford Expedition has been plagued with several issues over the years, including engine problems, accessory issues, paint trouble, air suspension failure, and issues with the EGR sensor and PCV hose. These problems can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a Ford Expedition.

Ford Expedition 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 1FMJK1MT1LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

- Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Ford Expedition 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

Vehicle year: 2020
Traded in a 2004 Expedition on a 2019 Expedition. I absolutely loved the older one and I must say, I love the new one even more! Throughout the buying process, I kept an open mind and considered Chevy and Cadillac, but I ultimately decided on the Ford because I don't buy foreign cars. The Ford is simply way better than the competition on almost every measure of effectiveness. I am so satisfied with my purchase that I will probably get another new one in 2029. Thank you for such a great product!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Expedition XLT 4X4. I purchased it mainly to tow a 20' enclosed Wells Cargo auto trailer, and I have to say, it's been a great choice. Even with a loaded weight of 6700 lbs. for the Expedition and 6100 lbs. for the trailer, it's been very stable and powerful thanks to the H-D towing package (9000 lbs. maximum). Plus, I've been getting excellent highway towing mpg of 12-13 with the 5.4 V-8 at 60-65 mph. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable towing vehicle.

Your vehicle rides really well and has lots of room for passengers and cargo. It's a great choice for long trips. The fuel mileage is so-so, but considering what it is, it's not bad.

I absolutely adore my Ford Expedition Max! It handles like a dream, especially in the snow. However, I did experience some trouble with the transmission slipping a few times, which was a bit disappointing. Despite taking it to the dealership and being told it was normal, I decided to get a second opinion and took it to Transmasters in West Valley City, Utah. They checked out my transmission and transaxle and assured me that everything was alright. They explained that it was simply the way Ford designed the system. I went back to the Ford dealership in Salt Lake City, Utah and spoke with Service Tech Doug, who was incredibly helpful. He took the time to explain what was happening and suggested that I drive in Sport mode to alleviate the issue. Since then, my Black Beauty has been operating much more smoothly. While I do wonder why Ford engineers designed an $80,000 vehicle that can't use the Economy drive mode, I remain hopeful that there won't be a large recall down the road. I believe that Ford will do everything in their power to ensure customer satisfaction.

Hands down, the best SUV you've ever owned. UPDATE: This SUV continues to be the best vehicle you've ever owned. It's smooth, powerful, quiet, and a technology leader. You can't think of a single change. You tow a 28' camper and the engine purrs right along, like nothing is behind it. You love it!

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently purchased my second Expedition, a 2016 Platinum with a sticker price of about $74,000. My first Expedition was a 2010 model that lasted an impressive 250,000 miles, despite spending the first two months in the shop for repairs at Casco Bay Ford in Yarmouth, Maine. On a recent trip from Maine to Florida, while driving on the interstate I-95 southbound at around 80mph, I experienced a scary incident. I was passing an 18-wheeler with another 18-wheeler behind me, and suddenly the engine shut down without any warning. I was lucky enough to be able to coast to the right-hand side of the road and avoid any accidents. After calling my dealer, Varney Ford in Newport, Maine, we went through everything and discovered that the issue was with an unfiltered air sensor. I had it fixed at Daytona Ford and have since driven about 8000 miles without any issues. I'm grateful for the help of the dealerships and thankful that the problem was resolved quickly and safely. Now that the other issues are taken care of, I am experiencing a loud clanking sound when I turn hard right. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the cause. Additionally, my windshield trim has fallen off, my rear windows will not open while driving on the highway, and my sunroof has leaked twice. My heated seats smell like they are melting and my heater smells like it's burning up. The Ford navigation system has been a challenge as it shuts off randomly, and all the controls for the 2016 Platinums are on this system. The sensors have also been a pain, with the side ones going off randomly while driving. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the dealer will be able to fix my truck soon. However, I must say that I am disappointed with Ford's lack of assistance and support. Overall, I would advise caution when considering a Ford vehicle. The dealer was very helpful in replacing my vehicle and getting me into a new 2017 model, which was a great relief after the previous one turned out to be a lemon. They acknowledged that there was a serious issue and did their best to deal with Ford, but unfortunately, the Ford representative, John, was not very helpful or friendly. He refused to listen to the issues and simply said that nothing could be done. Despite this, the dealer took care of me and I am still driving a Ford, as it was the best option to get out of the lemon situation. I have put about 8000 miles on the new vehicle and so far everything is running smoothly. While I do believe that Ford needs to take responsibility for the issues they have ignored, I would encourage people to consider other brands when making a purchase. Thank you for your understanding.

I've had this car for some time and it's not too bad. However, it is a bit small and I think bigger would be better. Unfortunately, some little things have broken in the car, like the handle. Also, the gas mileage could be better for longer trips, like from Tampa to Wesley Chapel 10 times a week...

I purchased an Expedition in 12/04. Despite experiencing several issues such as rough engine noise and malfunctioning power seats, a valve broke off and dropped into the cylinder at 66,800 miles. Despite only putting about 12,000 miles per year on the engine, Ford denied my request for assistance. As a result, I will be paying $7400.00 to replace the engine.

This car has unfortunately had a number of mechanical and fit/finish issues. Despite my dedication to Ford, I have been disappointed with the quality of this make/model. The McKinney, Texas shop has confirmed that Ford did not do a good job with this particular car. As a result, I am considering exploring other options beyond Ford.
