Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition problems

The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, has been in production since 1996 and has undergone several changes over the years. While it is known for its power and spacious interior, some model years have been plagued with issues that have caused concern for owners.

Engine problems are one of the most significant issues that Ford Expedition owners have reported. Many of the earlier models, such as 2006 and 2004, have experienced engine shutdowns on the open road, right as the engine light turned on. This problem can be both dangerous and expensive for those on the road. Other engine problems include rough engine operation, difficulty changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These issues can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers.

Accessory issues are another common problem with the Ford Expedition. Models such as 2006 and 2005 have experienced interior accessory problems, including air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These problems can be frustrating for drivers, especially those who enjoy the interior features that the Ford Expedition has to offer. These issues can also result in expensive repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.

Paint trouble is another common complaint among Ford Expedition owners. Users have reported peeling, chipping, and even bubbling of the paint, especially in the 2005 model. These problems can result in the need for costly detailing repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.

Air suspension failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2000 Ford Expedition. This problem can result in costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting that air suspension repairs can cost up to $1,500.

Rough idling caused by a sticking engine gas recirculation (EGR) sensor is another issue that has been reported in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and result in engine crankcase pressure issues. To fix the problem, the EGR sensor and valve may need to be replaced.

A cracked positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose can also cause issues in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2004. This problem can result in rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. To fix the problem, the PCV hose will need to be replaced with a new one.

In summary, the Ford Expedition has been plagued with several issues over the years, including engine problems, accessory issues, paint trouble, air suspension failure, and issues with the EGR sensor and PCV hose. These problems can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a Ford Expedition.

Ford Expedition 2020
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 1FMJK1MT1LE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

  • Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Also reported is that the flashers and alarm/horn were active when the fire started (same was true for most other vehicles in the lot that did not burn). This vehicle is not a Hybrid or EV, it is a stock gasoline vehicle with no modifications. The vehicle was towed away by Auto-Owners Insurance company. It is unknown if they have done any form of inspection or investigation. This was not reported to the police but the fire department made a call to extinguish the flames at 4:55 am when the water receded enough for them to access the parking lot.

Ford Expedition 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
  • VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

Today, I just traded in my Ford Expedition for a Toyota Sequoia, and I feel great! While the Expedition was aesthetically beautiful, it unfortunately turned out to be a nightmare. Despite replacing the transmission, 9 distributors, throttle position sensor, battery, rotors, and brakes over the years, there were still remaining issues that I could not afford to fix. These included the front differential, rear differential, throttle body, catalytic converter, driver window motor, and rear brakes. However, I am happy to say that these issues are no longer my problem. Buyer beware!

I've been a loyal Ford driver for 25 years and I absolutely love my 2015 Ford Expedition King Ranch. However, I've been experiencing an issue with the windshield that has been causing some inconvenience. Unfortunately, the windshield cracked just a month after I purchased the vehicle and it has been difficult to find a replacement due to the rain sensors. Despite this, I still believe that the rain sensing windshields are a great feature, but I would advise consumers to hold off on this upgrade until Ford is able to produce replacement parts. Overall, I'm confident that Ford will find a solution to this issue and I'm still very satisfied with my Expedition.

When I bought this vehicle, I was hoping that the interiors would hold up better. If you plan to buy one of these cars, I suggest purchasing the factory's extended warranty, as repairs can be expensive. Unfortunately, there have been some issues with the engines in the past, such as blown head gaskets and transmissions going bad as early as 16,000 miles of use.

November 2022: Despite being only 1 1/2 years old and having less than 11,000 miles, my Ford has experienced some issues. However, I am confident in the quality of my vehicle and have taken the necessary steps to address these concerns. I have had to refill the windshield wiper fluid frequently, but I am working with my dealership to identify and fix any leaks. The check engine light came on and I discovered that the PCM was malfunctioning, but my dealership quickly resolved the issue. I also noticed some corrosion on my intake manifold and a gasket falling out of the driver side door handle, but these were minor issues that were easily fixed. Additionally, I experienced some paint bubbling and peeling on my rooftop, but my dealership is working with me to resolve this issue under warranty. While I have had some recalls, I am confident that my dealership will take care of any necessary repairs. Overall, I am satisfied with my Ford and would recommend it to others. December 2022: While I had some issues with my paint job, I appreciate the helpfulness of my service advisor and the efforts of my dealership to resolve the issue. Although my manufacturers warranty is now null and void due to the third-party paint job, I understand that this is a standard policy. I am disappointed with the quality of work done by the body shop, but I am confident that my dealership will work with me to address any concerns. While I did experience some minor issues, I am still satisfied with my Ford and would recommend it to others. The car has been experiencing some issues lately, including corrosion on the intake manifold and a windshield wiper fluid leak that cannot be located. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with proper monitoring and maintenance. While I am disappointed with the current situation, I do not believe that it reflects the overall quality of Ford cars. I trust that the service advisor at my dealership will do their best to address these issues. As for the Pre-collision assist feature, I have scheduled a diagnosis in two weeks and am confident that it will be resolved. While I understand the frustration that comes with car troubles, I believe that it is important to remain calm and rational. I have faith in the quality of American-made cars and will continue to support them.

It sounds like you've had a really tough time with your vehicle. It's frustrating when repairs are needed frequently and at a high cost. It's understandable that you feel disappointed with your Ford and don't want to own another one. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I've been driving this vehicle for 6 years now, and it has clocked 152,000 miles. Initially, I was worried about the longevity and reliability of the turbo Ecoboost, but so far, the motor has been rock solid. Overall, my expedition has been quite reliable and has impressive capabilities. My wife mostly drives it, and we use it regularly for long trips with our family of 5, two dogs, and towing a travel trailer. It is very comfortable for all passengers, even those in the third row, and still has plenty of cargo room. I am still amazed at how many people and cargo can fit in it! The 3.5 turbo V-6 matched with 6spd transmission is strong and has plenty of power and torque, even when towing our 6,500lb camper. Braking is pretty good too. I've kept up with maintenance and haven't had any major mechanical problems yet, but it hasn't been perfect. Here's the list of minor issues: the blue tooth and sync system stopped working ($800 repair at Ford dealer). The rear shocks failed and had to be replaced ($600). The driver door lock had to be repaired. The rear back-up camera only works about half the time. The driver side door started leaking recently and filling up the floor with water, which I fixed by drilling a hole in the rocker panel. Check engine light came on for an emissions issue. Our state doesn't do emission inspections, and we've continued driving it without any problems. The heat/AC still work well, and the sound system is good. My biggest complaints are that our XLT model only has one USB outlet, and the interior has many cheap plastic parts that break easily. Also, the factory suspension/handling was quite bouncy, which I fixed with upgraded shocks. We average 19mpg, and 10mpg towing our camper, which is good for a large SUV. This may not be the best full-size SUV available, but it is a good value in my opinion and suits my family's needs well. I highly recommend it for any active and large families, but be prepared for some minor reliability issues as it ages.

I purchased this vehicle with 47K miles and have now driven it for slightly over 2 years, accumulating 110k miles. While I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it, my affection for it always wins out. It boasts a 5.8 V8 & AWD, but unfortunately, it doesn't get great gas mileage, averaging only 12.8 mpg, with the best being 17 mpg if you're on the highway all day. Despite this, it is a good-looking, comfortable, and solid vehicle that can go anywhere. Every time I look at it, I still like it. However, there are a few negatives, such as the quirky computer that runs the personal settings for the mirrors and seats, which sometimes work and sometimes don't. Additionally, the power windows can be noisy, and there is some wind noise from the moonroof. Since purchasing it new, I've only had to replace the brakes once and have had one tune-up. I'm now on my third set of tires.

This is a review of the 2017 Limited Expedition. It's important to do your research as the spot below only showed 2016. The Tahoe is a very good truck, but it's worth noting that they reduced the powertrain warranty to match Ford's for '16 or '17. The older models also didn't fold the 3rd row seats flat and had to be removed to use the space, which can be inconvenient. One of the major reasons I bought the Ford was the new engine. After dealing with leaking head gaskets on my '99 and a blown head gasket on my '03EB (pour&go stopped the leak) and also raining inside the truck as much as it rained outside & various electrical issues as the result, I was really looking hard at the Tahoe due to its very good reliability record. At the end of the day though, the new Ford with its 365HP/420ftlb (or 375/470ftlb depending on where you get your specs) engine & substantially lower cost made the decision for me because I have no latent loyalty to Ford or anyone else. Moving on to the truck itself, I've only had this truck for a few days, but it's really nice, VERY nice! It does an excellent job of blocking road & engine noise while having terrific acceleration. You really have to drive it to believe it. I’m used to driving the old 5.4L V8 for the past 15 years, and this engine is in a whole different class. The acceleration is truly phenomenal for a V6! It's strong and smooth without jerking or feeling like you are straining the engine in the least, it just goes where it’s pointed….in a hurry if you kick it in the ass! The braking is strong and sure for a nearly 3-ton mass of steel. It wallows slightly at higher speeds, maybe a bit more than its competition in the Tahoe. The Limited model does not have the electrically enhanced suspension as stock, so maybe that would make it more stable, but it's not unruly. Just treat it like a big truck, and you'll be fine. The vehicle is packed with tech features, including multiple 12-volt power ports (2 in the driver's compartment) and a 120-volt outlet in the 2nd row seating area (mounted on the rear of the driver's center console). The sound system is excellent, and even though I'm not a true aficionado, it sounds great to me! The fit and finish throughout the vehicle are much better than my '03 Eddie Bauer Expedition. The on-board computer allows for easy setup for your personal needs. The steering column comes with a motor-operated tilt and telescoping steering wheel that works in conjunction with the seat, adjustable foot controls, and mirrors with memory for two drivers. The motor-operated folding mirrors are a nice feature to avoid damage if driving through a tight space, as are the power running boards. You can also have the running boards automatically deploy as you open each door, leave them out all the time, or retract them all the time - it's your choice! The sunroof (moon roof) is tinted, which is a nice touch that wasn't on my older model. Two days after I bought it, the morning temperature was 32 degrees, and I used the remote start for the first time. It was so nice to climb into a fully warmed, heated seat truck! Yes, you can even get a heated steering wheel, but I do not have it, and I'm not sure if it's available on the Limited as an option or not. Using the computer setup, you can set up the remote start to heat or cool the truck based on the outdoor temperatures or “last setting” or auto. I have not changed the factory setting for it yet, so it was nice and cozy when I got in. I have several options on this truck, so I’m not 100% sure what is standard and what was an option, but I wanted heated and cooled seats, and evidently, the controls and the ducts for the air are already in place because at one point during the discussions, the dealer was willing to swap out the seats for climate-controlled seats (a $3,200 option). That means the wiring is already in place, as are the air ducts!Something to keep in mind if you decide to purchase a model without them! I was also hoping for a sunroof that won't leak like my '03EB did! The power lift gate allows you to easily open or close the large door from the driver's seat. Additionally, there are trailer brake controls mounted on the dash, as well as 'trailer settings' within the computer setup. If you are towing a trailer, the engine will use different shift points and other features. According to Ford, the available Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (TBC)* is integrated with the anti-lock brakes and trailer sway control, synchronizing vehicle and trailer brakes for seamless braking, even when towing a large boat or camper-trailer. TBC controls are easy to use and well positioned, just to the right of the steering wheel. The information about specific trailers can be accessed with controls on the steering wheel and displayed in the gauge cluster. You can input, track, and save information about specific trailers and manage how you use them. A trailer name, its trailer brake control settings, and mileage can all be stored. The off-road tools include displays of lateral, vertical, and turning radius information, as well as the 4x4 system and traction control status. Enjoy!

This is the first vehicle we ever purchased new and it has been excellent in terms of performance. We have never had any problems with it except for factory recalls for cruise control and torque on wheels, which were all taken care of at no cost. It is a comfortable, safe, and reliable truck. Even though it only gets around 14 mpg around town, we get about 22 on the highway. Our old Toyota Camry only got about 18 mpg around town, but this truck beats it in terms of storage, comfort, and safety! For just a couple hundred dollars extra in fuel costs, it's like having cheap life insurance!! We will definitely purchase another Ford when this one wears out, but it's built so well that we doubt it will ever wear out. Oh, and it's a 2WD with posi-traction and we even pass 4WD's in the snow!
