Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, has been in production since 1996 and has undergone several changes over the years. While it is known for its power and spacious interior, some model years have been plagued with issues that have caused concern for owners.
Engine problems are one of the most significant issues that Ford Expedition owners have reported. Many of the earlier models, such as 2006 and 2004, have experienced engine shutdowns on the open road, right as the engine light turned on. This problem can be both dangerous and expensive for those on the road. Other engine problems include rough engine operation, difficulty changing spark plugs, and ignition coil failures. These issues can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers.
Accessory issues are another common problem with the Ford Expedition. Models such as 2006 and 2005 have experienced interior accessory problems, including air conditioning malfunctions, dashboard rattling, and seat belt issues. These problems can be frustrating for drivers, especially those who enjoy the interior features that the Ford Expedition has to offer. These issues can also result in expensive repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Paint trouble is another common complaint among Ford Expedition owners. Users have reported peeling, chipping, and even bubbling of the paint, especially in the 2005 model. These problems can result in the need for costly detailing repairs, making them a significant concern for potential buyers.
Air suspension failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2000 Ford Expedition. This problem can result in costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting that air suspension repairs can cost up to $1,500.
Rough idling caused by a sticking engine gas recirculation (EGR) sensor is another issue that has been reported in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2007, 2012, and 2017. This problem can affect fuel economy and result in engine crankcase pressure issues. To fix the problem, the EGR sensor and valve may need to be replaced.
A cracked positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose can also cause issues in some Ford Expedition models, including 1997-2004. This problem can result in rough idling, whistling noises, and reduced gas mileage. To fix the problem, the PCV hose will need to be replaced with a new one.
In summary, the Ford Expedition has been plagued with several issues over the years, including engine problems, accessory issues, paint trouble, air suspension failure, and issues with the EGR sensor and PCV hose. These problems can result in expensive repairs and may pose a safety risk to drivers and passengers. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a Ford Expedition.

Ford Expedition 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 1FMJK1MT1LE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

- Summary: I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Also reported is that the flashers and alarm/horn were active when the fire started (same was true for most other vehicles in the lot that did not burn). This vehicle is not a Hybrid or EV, it is a stock gasoline vehicle with no modifications. The vehicle was towed away by Auto-Owners Insurance company. It is unknown if they have done any form of inspection or investigation. This was not reported to the police but the fire department made a call to extinguish the flames at 4:55 am when the water receded enough for them to access the parking lot.

Ford Expedition 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-17
- VIN: 1FMJK1JT6HE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, the speedometer began to bounce around. This caused erratic shifting. At one point the speedometer went to zero while we were still moving. I pulled over put it in park and it would not go into gear. During this the air bag light came on. After turning the vehicle off and back on again, everything went back to normal. Over a period of days, it would do the same thing again, but not as bad as the time listed above. The speedometer will bounce around while driving and cause moderate shifting issues. I took the vehicle into a shop, and they ran the code as being Output Speed Sensor. After research, it appears Ford had a recall on output speed sensors for 2014 F-150 vehicles (Recall Reference Number 24S37) which use the 6R80 transmission. I contacted my local Ford dealership and Ford corporate via chat, and both told me my 2017 Expedition was not covered under that recall. Since my vehicle uses the same transmission, I inquired as to what they did to fix the output speed sensor issue. They could not provide me with that information. I have several videos of the speedometer bouncing around, but am unable to upload them here.

Vehicle year: 1997
I'm so glad I purchased this vehicle back in 1997. It has been an absolute lifesaver in raising my kids. Despite heavy use, it has held up incredibly well. I've even taken it out in 4 wheel drive during snowy New Mexico winters and pulled a boat for tens of thousands of miles in Texas and Oklahoma. It has been my trusty companion for daily kid-hauling and even long distance weekly travel. It only failed me once in 12.5 years, and that was due to a faulty alternator after it had already clocked over 200,000 miles. Overall, this truck has been as reliable as a rock. Major repairs were rare and only related to normal wear and tear items such as the front-end, shocks, and compressor. And it's still going strong at 204,000 miles!

Vehicle year: 2006
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Expy. I bought it in July 15 with 83,500 miles and have put 1250 miles on it since then. So far, I don't have anything too bad to report. I figured with its age, the mpg would be a bit below the 14 city/18 highway mileage rating when new, but the city is right on. On the highway, it's doing a bit better, around 19.5 mpg. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's smoother and quieter on the highway than I thought it would be, even with the Firestone Destination AT's I put on to replace the Continental Contitrac TR's that it came with. All the electronics and bells and whistles work fine. The only negative is that 2006 still suffers from paint bubbling on the front edge of the aluminum hood. I'm told this is from a bit of iron corrupting the metal and the paint pops. It doesn't really rust, the paint just bubbles. It may also happen on the lift gate. Not much to do about it but touch up here and there before taking it in for a fix. I understand this may be common on early 2000's Expy's. As for me, I can live with it. That's the only negative I found so far. In February 2016, I drove it for 5000 miles since purchase and things are still good. The city mileage has drifted down to around 13 mpg, but it handled Mississippi river muddy bottom land just fine during duck season. It was wonderful, safe, and comfortable on a road trip to Green Bay from St. Louis for a Packers game. I also noticed that highway mpg is about 22 at 55 mph and 19.5 at 70 mph. Overall, I'm expecting a few years of good service from the vehicle.

Vehicle year: 2011
I purchased the 2010 EB/EL model for the extra space and options. It made the 3200 mile trip with golf clubs, tons of people and luggage a piece of cake! The ride was exceptional and the Navigation system is great. I am very pleased after three months of ownership and I hope it lasts.

Vehicle year: 2012
This 2010 Expedition EL Limited has been an exceptional automobile, with four-wheel drive that performs flawlessly in all conditions, including snow and sand. The Navigation System is highly effective, although it would benefit from an increased memory capacity of 100 locations instead of just 50. The engine, transmission, and power running boards are all outstanding and continue to function perfectly. Despite its impressive performance, I decided to trade it in for a 2018 Expedition Platinum Max 4X4, with just shy of 100K miles on it, as I am confident that the vehicle had many more trouble-free miles left in it. The 2018 model is equally impressive, although it can be somewhat noisy during rain due to the lack of insulation in the larger-than-necessary sunroof.

Vehicle year: 2005
My Expedition has been a reliable vehicle, with the exception of some necessary repairs. Despite following the recommended maintenance schedule, I had to replace the transmission at 90,000 miles and again one year later. Additionally, I had to repair a component connected to the front right axle. Recently, at 133,000 miles, the car cut off while I was driving on the freeway and I received a message to check the electronic throttle control. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with this year, make, and model. It is clear that Ford needs to address the ongoing transmission problems in their vehicles.

On 4th October 2019, we purchased a brand new 2019 Ford Expedition for almost $80,000. However, after leaving the dealership, we discovered that the rear AC was not working. I immediately contacted Brett, our sales agent, who drove the car from Surprise Ford to Peoria Ford. I then drove it to Goodyear AZ, and one of your service representatives picked it up and drove it back to your facility where it has been since. Currently, the car has less than 100 miles on it, and Peoria has put more miles on it than we have. Brett informed me that they would pick up the car on Monday, 7th October 2019, and get it fixed. However, even after their technician Cliff looked at it and made the recommended repairs, the unit was still not functioning. At this point, we asked for another car, but we were told that there were no other cars available. Bill then said he would work on getting us an identical or better car from another dealer and trade it. On Friday, I talked to Cliff, who informed me that they don't know what's wrong with it and are waiting to hear back from Ford. On 8th October 2019, I called our salesman Brett, who informed me that he has resigned his position at the dealership and he could not talk to me due to Peoria Ford pursuing him legally. However, we never heard back from Bill by Friday, 11th October 2019, end of day, and that is when I emailed the owner Pat Hickey. In my opinion, if I spend nearly $80,000 on a car and have purchased 5 other expensive vehicles from Peoria in the previous years, we should have been given our money back or provided with another car identical or within the week. When buying a luxury SUV and not being able to drive it, it is very frustrating, as we traded in a fully functional, very nice, fully loaded Yukon Denali. Our kids had fall break last week, and they were not able to travel to our home in the White Mountains due to space constraints of the much smaller Ford F-150.We were given a loaner F-150 crew cab, which unfortunately does not have the same space or luxury as the car we purchased. On 10-14-19, I had a conference call with the Owner Pat Hickey and Fleet Director Bill, during which I was told to wait 48 hours. However, I never heard back from them, so I sent another email. Pat informed me that he was boarding a flight and that Bill would take care of it. On 10-16-19, I made a formal complaint to Ford and was given Case # 24576080. Katherine at 1-866-631-3788 ext 7781410-18-19 assisted me, but unfortunately, the repair they performed did not fix the car. The Service Advisor Cliff has been texting me and told me that they have another call into Ford, but they don't know what the problem is. As of 10-21-19 @ 1050 hours, I have still not been contacted by the dealership nor Ford to resolve this issue, and we still do not have the SUV we paid for on 10-4-19. The car's value is nowhere near what we paid for it, as we looked at taking it to another Ford/Lincoln dealer to trade it in on another SUV, and they offered us 61K on a 78,000 dollar car. If they were to give us our money back, we would be losing the tax value we saved on trading in the Yukon Denali that we were given toward this car. Update 10-26-19: The car is still at the dealership broken.

We bought our 1997 Expedition XLT 4x4 in 2000 with about 100K miles already on it. I was a bit hesitant at first because the first year Exped had already developed a notorious reliability reputation, but the price was so good I couldn't resist. At the time, it was a good looking truck (and still looks great, even after all these years) and gas was affordable. Well, we've broken 250K miles and have only spent about $2500 in 10 years on actual repairs, not including regular maintenance of course. The small 4.6 L V8, which is underpowered for such a large vehicle, still holds its own and still gets 14+ MPG in mixed driving -- and EVERYTHING still works (all electrical, power, transmission, 4WD, etc)! I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed!

I purchased the Expedition in 2019 for 33k, which was a great deal considering the original price was 70k and it was only 2 years old. However, I have had some issues with it. It seems like everything that can break will eventually break. So far, I have had to fix or replace the heater/AC blower harness, wheel bearing hub, rear taillight every 6 months, rear backup camera, and windshield wiper assembly. My favorite issue was when the passenger side wiper stopped working and I thought it would be an easy fix, but it turned out that I had to replace the entire wiper unit. Additionally, the windows move up and down very slowly and dirt gets trapped in the base molding on the exterior, causing vertical scratches on all the windows. Unfortunately, the AC in the seats no longer works. Lastly, the driver side heat/AC doesn't work due to a blend door issue. Although the part itself is only $60 through Ford, it costs a whopping $2000 in labor to get to the blend door unit to replace it. Thanks, Ford, for the gift that keeps on giving! Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Expedition.

I am confident in stating that the Ford Expedition and trucks manufactured in '98 and '99 have major engine defects involving the cylinder heads, which unfortunately led to the need for a new engine in my vehicle. Despite the dealership's difficulty in fixing the electrical problems, it is common knowledge that Ford has not acknowledged this issue.

Coil pack design can be frustrating, but with Ford vehicles, it's important to note that each cylinder has its own coil pack. While this may increase repair costs from $300 to $2,400, it's important to keep in mind that this design is unique to Ford. It's possible that the coil packs may need replacing more often than other vehicles, but it's important to stay on top of regular maintenance to avoid any unexpected issues. Please be aware that Ford may not cover the increased cost, so it's important to plan accordingly.
