2006 Ford Expedition problems
The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.
Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-06
- VIN: 1FMFU18566L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE IN TRAFFIC, AT LEAST 100 TIMES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS (AT VARIABLE SPEEDS FROM 5 TO 65 MPH ON CITY STREETS AND FREEWAYS) MOST RECENTLY TWICE IN THE LAST WEEK, THE RPMS DROP BELOW 500 AND THE VEHICLE DIES AND "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" LIGHTS UP ON THE DASH. I HAVE TO EITHER COAST TO PULL OVER OR DEAD STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE TO TURN THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY OFF (EVEN THOUGH IN FAILSAFE MODE ENGINE IS OFF, THE ELECTRONICS ARE STILL ON) AND THEN RESTART AND THEN IT WILL DRIVE JUST FINE UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. IT HAPPENS ANYWHERE FROM ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS TO 6 TIMES IN 1 WEEK. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IF I DRIVE WITH BOTH FEET IN TRAFFIC AND MAINTAIN ABOUT 800-1000 RMPS AT ALL TIMES IT DOESN'T DO THIS, HOWEVER THIS CANNOT BE DONE ALL THE TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO STOP THE LARGE VEHICLE QUICKLY OR TURNING IN AN INTERSECTION. NOTHING HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY DEALERSHIP AS NO CODES ARE THROWN. I ALSO OWN A OBD2 READER AND NO CODES HAVE EVER LISTED UNLESS ITS TIME TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS. SEVERAL DIFFERENT MECHANICS, FORUMS AND BRAINSTORMING HAS NOT FIGURED IT OUT. I HAVE REPLACED MOSTLY EVERYTHING WITH EXCEPTION TO A NEW TRANSMISSION AND COMPUTER. MOSTLY EVERYTHING INCLUDING WIRES AND VACUUM LINES AND GASKETS HAVE BEEN REPLACED DUE TO MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS FROM EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAS GONE WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE PUT ABOUT $10K INTO NEW PARTS FOR THIS VEHICLE. I BOUGHT IT WITH 60K MILES ON IT AND IT NOW HAS 117K, ITS A DAILY DRIVER WITH 28 MILES OF TRAVEL 5 DAYS A WEEK. ALSO THE ONLY VEHICLE THAT FITS ALL OF THE CHILDREN FOR SOCCER, TRACK AND VOLLEYBALL TRAVELING TOURNAMENTS/GAMES. LUCKILY IT DOESN'T HAPPEN VERY OFTEN WHEN I'M NOT IN TRAFFIC SO THE KIDS AREN'T USUALLY WITH ME BUT IT IS VERY SCARY NOT TO KNOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO STOP OR IF THE PEOPLE BEHIND YOU ARE GOING TO HIT YOU OR NOT.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Expy. I bought it in July 15 with 83,500 miles and have put 1250 miles on it since then. So far, I don't have anything too bad to report. I figured with its age, the mpg would be a bit below the 14 city/18 highway mileage rating when new, but the city is right on. On the highway, it's doing a bit better, around 19.5 mpg. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's smoother and quieter on the highway than I thought it would be, even with the Firestone Destination AT's I put on to replace the Continental Contitrac TR's that it came with. All the electronics and bells and whistles work fine. The only negative is that 2006 still suffers from paint bubbling on the front edge of the aluminum hood. I'm told this is from a bit of iron corrupting the metal and the paint pops. It doesn't really rust, the paint just bubbles. It may also happen on the lift gate. Not much to do about it but touch up here and there before taking it in for a fix. I understand this may be common on early 2000's Expy's. As for me, I can live with it. That's the only negative I found so far. In February 2016, I drove it for 5000 miles since purchase and things are still good. The city mileage has drifted down to around 13 mpg, but it handled Mississippi river muddy bottom land just fine during duck season. It was wonderful, safe, and comfortable on a road trip to Green Bay from St. Louis for a Packers game. I also noticed that highway mpg is about 22 at 55 mph and 19.5 at 70 mph. Overall, I'm expecting a few years of good service from the vehicle.

I'm an old school SUV/truck guy (Bronco) and I have to admit, I was never a fan of independent suspension. However, this Expedition has pleasantly surprised me. I ordered the off-road suspension package and I absolutely love the ride and drive of my Expedition. Overall, this thing is like a Swiss army knife - you can do almost anything with it, and it actually goes off-road pretty well too. The Ford Expedition is one awesome 4-wheel drive SUV!

My previous vehicle was a Land Rover Discovery. When I was searching for a Hybrid, I went to check out the Escape. However, the Hybrid model costs an additional $10K. While I want to do my part for the environment, I don't think it should be solely up to me. Even though I won't save $10K in fuel, I found that the Expedition was priced similarly and offered much more luxury. After test driving it, I decided to treat myself for once, instead of always doing without. As a boomer, I think it's time to indulge myself. The Expedition drives like a dream and provides a comfortable and luxurious ride. Although I don't have children, the DVD PLAYER in the back will be perfect for when I take my Mom to Las Vegas. She can watch a movie and stop asking 'are we there yet?' Sometimes, seniors can be worse than kids. Enjoy!

We purchased the Expy last January to replace our AWD 1997 Mountaineer (which is now my winter driver, while my wife drives the Expy). I must say, the Expy has been outstanding so far. It has been super reliable, just like all the Fords I have ever owned. The 5.4 engine is really smooth and has more than enough power, and the transmission is also smooth. We absolutely love all the bells and whistles that come with it. The power fold rear seats are one of the best options. The air ride suspension is very smooth on highway trips, and a little rough on the not-so-nice roads. As expected, fuel economy is what it is (averaging 12mpg in winter and 14mpg in summer, and bested 16 mpg's on a highway trip at about 70-75 mph) for a vehicle this size, and I knew that going into it.

Coil pack design can be frustrating, but with Ford vehicles, it's important to note that each cylinder has its own coil pack. While this may increase repair costs from $300 to $2,400, it's important to keep in mind that this design is unique to Ford. It's possible that the coil packs may need replacing more often than other vehicles, but it's important to stay on top of regular maintenance to avoid any unexpected issues. Please be aware that Ford may not cover the increased cost, so it's important to plan accordingly.

The side view mirrors are too large and create wind noise above 65 MPH. The material quality is poor, including the plastic bumpers and interior materials. The steering is not as user-friendly as it was on the '97 models. Additionally, the lack of power (4.6 L/V8-2004 EB) was disappointing. After driving the car for 5 months, I decided to trade it for an Armada and noticed a significant difference. At this time, I would not recommend the Expedition. However, I believe that if FORD leadership focuses on improving quality, sales will increase again.

The vehicle vibrates while in motion, particularly at speeds of 25 mph and above, causing noticeable shaking in the steering wheel. Despite the mechanic's initial assessment, the steering can be unpredictable and difficult to maintain a straight line at highway speeds. However, the engine is a standout feature, delivering impressive power. While the interior materials may not be of the highest quality, it is important to note that rattling can occur in many American-made vehicles. Overall, the Ford brand has faced challenges, but this vehicle's engine performance is a clear indication of the company's engineering capabilities.

This is an excellent family vehicle for those with more than 4 members. It offers ample storage space and the DVD system is a lifesaver on long family trips, keeping the kids entertained and quiet. The heated and air-conditioned seats are a nice touch, and the power 3rd row makes loading and unloading a breeze. The only downside is that it could be more fuel-efficient. If gas prices were lower, we would drive it all the time. I would definitely consider buying another one if Ford made a hybrid version like the Escape. Overall, it's a great choice for families on the go!

This SUV has some significant issues that need to be addressed. The coil needs to be replaced every 2-3 months, and there are instances where it stalls while driving. Additionally, the factory spark plugs have been known to break off in the motor head, which can be a costly repair. It is recommended that Ford addresses these issues to ensure the satisfaction and safety of their customers.
