2023 Ford Expedition problems

ford logo

The Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV, manufactured by Ford. Introduced for the 1997 model year as the successor of the Ford Bronco, the Expedition was the first full-size Ford SUV sold with a four-door body. For its entire production life, the Ford Expedition has been derived from the corresponding generation of the Ford F-150 in production, sharing some body and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition began production for the 2018 model year. Similar to the configuration of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Ford Expedition is sold in regular and extended lengths (the Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter functionally serves as the replacement for the Ford Excursion.

Since 1997, the Lincoln division has marketed the Ford Expedition as the Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by a luxury auto brand in North America (the Expedition was never sold as a Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, the full-size SUV follows a 1992 F-150 Eddie Bauer concept vehicle and a 1995 trim level package on the two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Prior to 2009, the Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (previously home to the Ford Bronco). After 2009, the Ford Expedition was moved to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Common 2023 Ford Expedition problems

The 2023 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that delivers spaciousness, comfort, and robust capability. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are some of the common problems reported by owners of the 2023 Ford Expedition:

  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is another common problem, particularly in the 2004 model year, with an average mileage of 76,000 and an average cost to fix of $2700.
  • Bubbling Paint: Bubbling paint is a problem reported in the 2005 model year, with an average mileage of 54,000 and an average cost to fix of $4200.
  • Excessive Spark Plug Gaps: This problem can cause ignition coils to fail, leading to the Check Engine Light coming on.
  • Mass Flow Sensor (MAF) Failure: This problem can cause rough idling, hesitation, or stalling in models with the Triton V8 engine.
  • Engineered Issues: Some owners have reported issues with bad engineering, leading to problems such as the engine shutting off and excessive humming noises.
  • Infotainment System: Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, such as difficulty integrating with their phones and the need for climate control buttons.
  • Visibility Problems: The large size of the Expedition can make it difficult to see pedestrians and other drivers, leading to safety concerns.

It is important to note that these issues are based on reports from owners and may not be representative of all 2023 Ford Expedition models. Ford offers a standard three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which can help cover the cost of any repairs needed due to these issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FMJU1M8XPE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Hurricane Helene inundated our parking lot on September 27 with approximately 3-4 feet of storm surge. Many vehicles (20-25) were trapped and flooded. This vehicle caught fire and was totally consumed over the course of a 5-6 hour burn. Although all vehicles in our lot were flooded, this was the only vehicle to catch fire. By reports of eyewitnesses, the fire started underwater at the front of the vehicle and proceeded to consume it entirely. It did not blow up. Also reported is that the flashers and alarm/horn were active when the fire started (same was true for most other vehicles in the lot that did not burn). This vehicle is not a Hybrid or EV, it is a stock gasoline vehicle with no modifications. The vehicle was towed away by Auto-Owners Insurance company. It is unknown if they have done any form of inspection or investigation. This was not reported to the police but the fire department made a call to extinguish the flames at 4:55 am when the water receded enough for them to access the parking lot.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 1FMJK1H81PE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Ford expedition max 2023. My vehicle has had issues since day one. Transmission has a Rough idle- can see hood shake, door shake, steering wheel shake. This is in all temperatures, it does not matter if the car has been sitting for 3 minutes or 2 days it does this. Transmission rough shifting gears 3-4-5 between 1-2 RPMs. What is going on with the transmission? Is it going to potentially lock up on me? Any transmission issue is a safety concern. Windshield wiper not aligned properly front passenger side, ford continues saying this is normal… however not all expeditions have abnormally high wind shield wipers. Error code- park brake fault service now. Dealership says this was a fluke for this service code to pop up and nothing is wrong. There was already an air conditioning leak that has been resolved. This should not happen in a 2023 vehicle. Screen is always glitching will stay glitched for several hours where it’s showing black, or showing 10 different parts of the screen and you can’t press anything etc… or staying locked on the back up camera. Dangerous to be driving and have your maps on and then it disappears where you cannot access it. Right side (passenger side) fold out mirror randomly does not fold out upon unlocking vehicle and gets stuck folded in, dangerous to drive with a mirror folded in this affects visibility. Drivers seatbelt messed up, became loose and had to be replaced. This is again a huge safety issue, it has been fixed but should not be occurring in a 2023 vehicle.

VISIBILITY,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
  • VIN: 1FMJK1M82PE
  • Components: VISIBILITY,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving down the road. There were no other vehicles around me. I then heard, what sounded like someone shooting a gun from the middle row up through the sunroof. It was the most insanely loud noise, i had ever heard coming from a vehicle. I pulled over and realized that the sunroof had exploded. The glass was shattered and was protruding up. The glass then shattered, sending shards of glass to the interior of the vehicle over my son, elderly mother and myself. We were all so frightened.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • VIN: 1FMJK1J84PE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On warm days, while running the AC, the entire HVAC system shuts down and stops blowing air out of any vents at all. This occurs weather the vehicle is driving or stationary. Making it especially dangerous when the windshield begins fogging up during rainy or humid weather and unable to defog it. Similar reports online suggest the evaporator is freezing up completely and blocking all airflow

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-22
  • VIN: 1FMJK2A86PE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought a 2023 FORD EXPEDITION MAX LIMITED for business purposes as a livery vehicle. I drive about 5000 miles a month. Problem 1: From the day I bought this vehicle from ford dealer in GJOVIK FORD in PLANO IL I hear kicks and clunks under my feet (most likely faulty transmission). The kicks and clunks happen when I'm about to come to a stop or when starting from a stop. Sometimes when turning. Its always when I let go of the gas or give it gas. It sounds like I'm driving a 10 year old car. Problem 2: After I did my first oil change I had driven about 2500 miles when the cars engine light came on and I take it to the dealer and they found that the engine oil was too low. They did an oil consumption test and the test shows 1 quart of oil lost for every 1500 miles driven. They find no oil leaks. I'm using full synthetic oil from the dealer. This is unreasonable. Problem 3: The car smells some sort exhaust fumes in the vehicle when I drive for about 30 minutes or more. The first few thousands miles the car would smell a little fumes here and there but now its more constant the longer you drive it. I paid close to $80k for this vehicle. The least I expect is for the car to operate normal. Ford has cheated me out alot of money as I have not received what I have paid for and I am not enjoying it at all. The vehicle currently has 18K miles in it. All symptoms have been present from the day I bought it. I do not know who to contact but this is not fair!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-21
  • VIN: 1FMJU1L84PE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have taken the Expedition to the dealer for 2 issues: 1) the truck release didn't work correctly when you unlatch. However, Finally there was an update a year later to fix it.2) The infotainment 15 inch touchscreen is not dependable 3 out of 7 days, roughly. When turning it on, it doesn't go on and you have to try to back up this monster without a camera. I nearly killed a small child walking in front of the mother as he wasn't tall enough to be seen on the side mirrors or rear view. She hit the truck for me to slam on breaks. When driving on highway, it suddenly blacked out and rebooted. It will always eventually reboot, if dark, upon starting truck. When I brought it in for service mentioned above, the gentleman said "we couldn't make the trunk replicate what you were talking about and didn't want to wear down the battery. As for the touchscreen, it needed an update." Funny. no updates mentioned on Ford's site. I live in Scottsdale , AZ where our temps can get as high as 120 degrees. Everyone will tell you to not leave your phone or iPad in a hot car in our summer as the battery life will be shortened, display dims or goes black, cameras can be disabled and with some apps or features, performance is reduced with lower frame rates or increased processing times. SO.....couldn't this conceivably happen with the touchscreen on the Expedition? Also, the sign on the dash stated the other day, "no key recognized." The key was in my purse and then in my hand and I still could't start the car. I had to open the driver door and close to "reboot" and then it worked! Please help. I have read on different sites that this is common with other owners who live in hot climate. Thanks.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-09
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FMJK1J81PE
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: At approximately 13:12 CST on [XXX], I exited the car wash at a gas station in Rochester, MN. I drove around to the front of the gas station to park so I could go inside to replenish the car wash card. At approximately 13:13 CST, as I was turning right, pulling into the parking space near the entrance, the truck accelerated unexpectedly and collided with a cement parking pilon (sp?). I am unsure how this occurred. I believe the vehicle may have accelerated on its own. Holding my foot hard on the brake, I shifted into reverse, then backed the truck up about 2 feet from the pilon, turned off the vehicle and went outside to assess the damage. There was front end passenger side damage to the vehicle and the pilon casing was ripped and the top was pushed halfway off. Thank God that pilon was there to stop the vehicle and avoid hitting the building or pedestrians. At the time I was parking I am sure I was driving less than 5 mph, but I am unsure how fast the vehicle got to in that 15-20 foot acceleration. When the vehicle hit the pilon it was very jarring. The impact threw my glasses off my face, flung my backpack from the passenger seat to the front passenger floor, and caused my cases of soda pop and bags of groceries in the trunk area to shift forward and to rip the paper grocery bags. My right thumb and the right side of my neck were sore that evening and I had a minor headache as well. This Ford Expedition Max has approximately 35K miles on it. It is a well maintained company fleet vehicle. There were no warning lights prior. I wonder if water from the carwash got into something electrical or if there is some other defect that caused a sudden acceleration? • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-03
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FMJU1K87PE
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I crunk my 2023 Ford Expedition up yesterday so the AC would run and it wouldn’t be so hot. When I walked back outside My truck had rolled backwards and hit my house. The vehicle was in park. Now I have to fix my house and my truck and all of this is something that should have never happened and is extremely scary and dangerous. Thankfully I got into my house before it hit it because I may not have been so lucky considering my vehicle was to my back and could’ve easily rolled over me if it had started rolling sooner than it did.

Negative 2023 Ford Expedition car reviews

  1. Marcelo Gutkowski 2024-09-20

I recently purchased a 2021 Expedition Max Limited, trading in my loaded 2013 Expedition EL XLT. While the exterior looks nice and appears to be well-built, I have noticed a significant decrease in the build quality of the 2021 model compared to my 2013. The EcoBoost engine is louder than the 5.4 V-8, and the interior stitching on the seats is subpar. Additionally, the seats feel slightly smaller and less comfortable than my previous model. The interior creaks and rattles, and the rear bucket seats shake over every crack in the road. The ride is rough and loud, making every bump in the road noticeable. Unfortunately, I experienced a faulty fuse box at only 500 miles, which required a tow back to the dealership. While Ford initially wanted me to pay for the towing, the dealership did cover the cost. The rear cargo area has also been downgraded, with the adjustable floor panels being replaced with a cheap and light floor covered in fabric. The auto headlights work but are a little too touchy, blinking from low to high to low more often than necessary. Despite these issues, I must say that the exterior of the vehicle looks nice. However, the quality of Ford's vehicles has decreased dramatically while increasing in cost. I am considering purchasing a Nissan Armada next time around, as it is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven.

  2. Jillian Harris 2024-08-25

The car was purchased in March 2023. Unfortunately, within 5 miles of driving off the dealer lot, the check engine light turned on. Despite the dealer's initial claim that it was just a simple emissions check, it was discovered that both catalytic converters needed to be replaced. Additionally, the transmission became clunky and would slip when merging on highways. While the car has lots of power and is comfortable, it is advisable to stay away from former rental units. It is important to note that ecoboost engines are known to require meticulous maintenance schedules.

  3. Issac Hettinger 2024-02-07

I own a 2021 Ford Expedition Limited and while it has some great features, I have had some challenges with it. I have found it to be a bit rough and loud, and it requires more frequent gas fill-ups than I would like. Additionally, there have been some recalls that Ford has not yet been able to fix. Despite these challenges, I have been unable to find a GMC on a lot anywhere to test drive. If you are in the market for a full-size SUV, I would recommend test driving all options to find the one that fits you best. Thank you for considering my experience with the Ford Expedition Limited.

I can't complain about anything....after I got used to the size. Tows our boat without a complaint. Have to check every once in a while, to make sure it's still there. It's a great ride and it carries everything we need for our trips. No more putting stuff in the boat in plastic bags. It's also very comfortable, providing the most comfortable ride we have ever had. The performance is beyond our expectations. Although we had to wait six months, it was well worth it.

  2. Garland O'Connell 2024-09-15

So glad to hear that you're enjoying your Black Expedition Max! It sounds like it's been everything you could ask for in a vehicle. The ride, handling, and performance couldn't be better. Keep on enjoying the ride!

I love it! The car is big and has all the modern features with the feeling of a solid SUV. These are the most comfortable seats I've had in a long time. The 2021 model has the navigation and on-screen controls tucked in the dash in a reasonably sized screen.

Same model and trim level as my 2016 but it has far more features, many of which I didn't expect.
